Guest Reviews
- Heather (8/5): - Great little side house to stay! Great location and breakfast!
- Teryl (10/5): - Beautiful historical house. Excellent breakfast.
- Billy (4/5): - Let me start by saying the lady I spoke with was so super nice and returned my call immediately after I left my message concerning the smell of the cottage. I do not know about the condition of the main house because we stayed in the cottage out back. The owners have really tried to make the cottage as amenable as possible but unfortunately it smelled like a damp, musty basement, especially around the hall by the bathroom. I understand this cottage was built in the early 1900's but it could seriously use some ventilation work work underneath and and an air purifier....other than the Glade plug in's used to freshen the air inside. All of our clothes and luggage smelled like Glade when we checked out and I found the mix of that smell and the musty odor of the room pretty bad. Again though, the owners and the property were great. If I had to recommend it to a friend I would tell them to DEFINITELY not stay in the cottage but get a room in the main house instead.
- Jennifer (10/5): - This historic property retains much of its original charm while integrating modern amenities. Breakfast was exceptional and the conversation extraordinary. This will be my go-to accommodation for future visits.
- Daniel (10/5): - "The Cottage" was very comfortable and perfect for what we needed. The host was very pleasant and we would certainly enjoy staying here again.
- Dianne (10/5): - Delicious breakfast, especially the scones.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Great location, beautiful historic home within walking distance to the great restaurants and shops in the downtown area. Mark, our host, was very kind and attentive. We loved having the privacy of the smaller unit off the back of the house! Highly recommend
- Mary (10/5): - Great stay here! This is an 1804 property conveniently located within a few minutes' walk to Tryon Palace, and easy reach of the rest of New Bern. Our host, Mark provided two excellent breakfasts and was very personable.
- raymond (8/5): - very convenient location
hosts were very personable - and breakfasts were delicious
it's an old house and is a work in progress but rooms were nice and cozy
- Jill (10/5): - What a wonderful getaway cottage in New Bern! Perfect location and within walking distance of every attraction. Very quiet with available parking. Breakfast was amazing and Mark was the best host.
- Harley (6/5): - The house spans two centuries , so cool. That said, the place needs some ‘freshening’ and it is so stuffed with oversized, non-period furniture that it detracts from the ambiance of the house. The listing said nothing about the fact that the bathroom (for my room) was on the other side of two staircases—if I had known I would not have reserved it.
- CHRISTOPHER (10/5): - Enjoyed talking to the host and hostess.
- Victoria (10/5): - We had an amazing stay at “The Captains Stay”. We stayed in the house and the room was large and bathroom was clean and lovely. The proximity to shopping and dining is perfect! Mark and Lori are like family! Breakfast was amazingly delicious! We cannot wait to return! Highly Recommend!
- Charles (8/5): - Overall our stay was great! The room is a little crowded but had everything we needed. Mark was pleasant and fixed a very nice breakfast. The property was convenient to all we wanted to do in New Bern.
- Michelle (10/5): - My son and I stayed in the cottage for one night. My son wanted to stay in a historic house, but have separate beds. A little tricky to find, but the cottage has two queen beds, so perfect! The hosts went above and beyond several times and made a fantastic nutella crepe just for my son. Highly recommend this property!
- cecelia (8/5): - The location is great, 1 block to the Palace and to the trolley stop. The breakfasts (crepes, scones, eggs, bacon) made by the host, Mark, were superb. Because I am not a fan of Keurig, he made me coffee. There were some snafus, but the hosts did everything to try to accommodate me. Thus 4 stars instead of 5.
- Lilli Ann (10/5): - The Captain's Stay was outstanding. The breakfast on both days was fantastic. Mark and Lori are gracious innkeepers.
- Hattie M. (10/5): Nice little weekend getaway. - My fiancé and I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay here. We were in town for an educators' workshop at Tryon Palace, and The Captain's Stay was only but a short 5 minute walk away. The lovation is perfect and the breakfast every morning was delicious! A great way to start our day. The bed was also very comfortable and cozy. We look forward to visiting here again, it was so lovely!

- SAM (10/5): - Visited charming New Bern for two nights on business 7/26/2022. Beautiful location right in the historic part of New Bern with wonderful hosts Mark and Lori . Charming and comfortable room in a house built in 1860s and nicely de orated with each room having it own theme. Breakfast included is cooked to order and wonderful. Rooms very clean. Walk down the street and you are in historic area of famous history of Bear City. Shopping and dining close and nice. Will definitely be back for further adventures. Thank you Mark and Lori for a wonderful stay.
- John (10/5): - Location
- yvonne (10/5): - The stay included a hot breakfast. We had fresh fruit, a yummy muffin and eggs and bacon! Coffee was good and strong to help us get through the day! The B&B is within walking distance to downtown New Bern so a car is not needed. And Mark was lovely!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great property...cute, cozy, comfy. We were sad the big house wasn’t open to guests and we couldn’t have our sit-down home cooked breakfast. However, we enjoyed the delicious homemade scones and hot coffee delivered to our door. We want to go back!

- Verified traveler (4/5): - I would not have booked if I had known the house is left unlocked and unattended. The outside looks unkept and the inside needs a good cleaning and some sprucing up. Pics from the website are old and rating was from 2017 of the bed and breakfast. The house has has lots of charm and the innkeeper was nice but we didnt feel safe staying there.

- Liesl (10/5): - The Innkeeper, Craig, is one of the nicest people I've ever met. He did everything to make our stay comfortable. He recommended restaurants, invited us to join him for dinner. His housekeeper is also an angel. In addition to runnin the BnB, they were also taking care of people displaced by Hurricane Florence.
- Lori (10/5): - Very charming and clean. Our was very spacious and comfortable. It convenient walking distance to downtown New Bern.
- Mark (10/5): - Great place within walking distance from Downtown. Everywhere you look there is a treat in the house, really makes you feel welcomed.

His meals were bountiful and innovative. The front porch and rockers were especially enjoyed. Highly recommend this lovely inn.

The Master Stateroom is steeped in history. Bed is huge and very comfortable. I only booked for one night, and was kicking myself for not staying longer!

- Joel (10/5): A hidden treasure in eastern NC - Our trip to New Bern and time at the Captain's Stay exceeded our expectations! The town is loaded with history, great restaurants, and fun things to do. Somehow New Bern manages to attract lots of tourists while maintaining a sleepy old town feel. If you run out of things to do in New Bern, Morehead City and Atlantic Beach are just down the road. This was our first trip to this part of NC, but definitely not our last.
Craig, the owner of the Captain's Stay, was a wonderful host. We had engaging conversations around the breakfast table and he offered great advice about things to see, places to go, and restaurants to eat. His breakfasts were huge and delicious! (Try the French toast at least once.) He also provided little things that made a big difference such as water bottle, snacks, coffee, umbrellas and etc.
- john f. (10/5): New Bern - great stay
- Blake (10/5): great weekend - We had a great weekend at the Captain's Stay! Craig cooked us delicious French toast and quiche for breakfast, and we enjoyed chatting with the other guests over breakfast. The inn is well within walking distance to Tryon Palace and downtown. Highly recommend!!
- Terrie (10/5): Great location - Loved the claw foot tub and spacious bathroom. Very comfortable bed. We were on the top floor with private bath. Virtually across the street from Tyron Palace. Also walkable around the town. Please host who is a great cook.
- Robert (10/5): Terrific location - I only stayed one night, but it was enough to enjoy walking the well preserved old town with its water front, fine restaurants and shops, gorgeous older homes and, believe it or not, theatres with live musicals playing a good portion of the year.
- Todd (10/5): Fantastic Bed and Breakfast in downtown New Bern - The stay was great, Craig takes excellent care of you, the home is beautiful, clean and comfortable and the location is about 2-3 blocks from the center of the historic district.
- Jamal (10/5): Captain's Stay totally Awsome! - The Captain's Stay is a wonderful B&B. Craig, the proprietor, was top notch. He was knowledgeable and friendly. New Bern is a quaint and quiet getaway for someone interested in unwinding and hitting the reset button on life.
- steve (8/5): Good location, friendly owner.. - This Pollock St location is easy walking distance to Tryon Palace, Pepsi Museum and downtown attractions. Craig and his trusty puppy Blue will be readily available to greet you upon arrival. The house is very old so expect to find some uneven flooring about..but the fine touch of hospitality excels and makes up for that.. breakfast area and bath are well presented...Craig will not let you go away hungry that is for sure...with his pick-me-up breakfasts. Nice relaxing living room too... Definitely laid back atmosphere here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Charming B&B in historic district, walk to town - Breakfast was excellent! The location and accommodations were very good. Craig, the proprietor, could not have been better -- he drove me all over town. I probably will return just to visit with Craig.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fun and Cozy B&B - Had a great stay at Captain Stay. My Craig and his wife were very warm and welcoming. I felt very comfortable at the B&B and had plenty of time to relax. Excellent breakfast made in the morning. The French toast was perfect!
- Claire (10/5): Adorable B&B - Owners are extremely friendly and breakfast is delicious! Walking distance to the water, restaurants and lots of cute little shops.
- Betsy (10/5): GREAT HOSPITALITY!! - The B & B is very well-kept and the owners are very welcoming! They picked us up from the airport when we missed our rental car pickup and took us back to the airport the next day so we could pick up our rental. We felt right at home!! We will definitely stay there the next time we visit our family in New Bern!! Thanks Craig and Denise!!
- gary (10/5): Lovely 200 yr old B and B - The captains stay was a beautiful place! The master suite is very roomy. Large bathroom with a beautiful old fashioned tub to soak along with a very nice separate shower. Craig and Dennis were great! Had a wonderful breakfast! Will stay there again for sure.
- chris (10/5): Couldn't have been better. - Wonderful hosts. Very friendly but not intrusive. Flexible - one morning I had to leave at 6 am and they insisted on getting up early to cook breakfast. Gave me a ride to airport in New Bern the day I left I save me the cab care.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - My friend and I chose New Bern for a little girls get away weekend. We are huge Nicholas Sparks fans and wanted a place that would keep us within walking distance to the sights and sounds of the town. Captain's Stay was just perfect for everything. Denise and Craig were amazing hosts. The breakfast was absolutely delightful and kept us filled until dinner. We coulld not have asked for a a better place to stay and highly recommend it to any one visiting New Bern!
- Deborah (10/5): Very comfortable. Great people. Close to everythin - Two day stay. Owners are friendly and helpful. I will stay here again.
- KIMBERLY (8/5): Quaint Cottage for Three - I would stay again if we visited New Bern in the future. The cottage is small but just right for our family of three for one night. I was thrilled to find a B&B with two queen beds for us! The cottage has its own heating unit which made it very cozy, and another heater in the bathroom. The cottage has a feel of my grandmother's house with the vintage decor and softly worn bedding. Overall it was nice.
For our visit, the weather was quite cold while we were there so we borrowed a movie from the house library after touring Tryon Palace all afternoon. We lunched at MJ's and dined at Morgan's - both were great. We also enjoyed a visit to the Pepsi Store and Christ Episcopal Church. We did not utilize the WiFi because the password was too long for accurate entry on phones and it wasn't a priority for us.
On our way back to Raleigh, we stopped in Kinston to visit the USS Neuse and other Civil War sites - interesting places that we are glad to have explored.
The owner (who has just sold it to a new owner) was very gracious and accommodating, and the new owner was very kind and personable.
