X6428PUchriss (2/5): Avoid - We stayed for 3 nights. 5 couples. No breakfast available. We used the restaurant first night. Food was expensive and of poor quality. Service was impersonal. Room was an annexe (12) that was, we suspect, damp, extract ventilation did not work. Hot water was excessively hot. Bar prices excessive and served by a Scaffolder that rocks around in a Porsche...calls everyone mate! thinks he is Bertie Big Bollox. Waitress was a bully and really needs a Dentist. Can not sit in bar for a drink as all tables are reserved for unsuspecting diners. Adjacent A road with noise all night from industrial rural logistic operators. Made to pay up front... don`t do this!! Check in but no Check out!! Avoid Avoid Avoid. (we tried to book in elsewhere after the first night but Moffat was full) Will not be going back to Moffat after this experience.

leesF6082WI (2/5): Damp room, noisy staff living next door. Never again - No breakfast facilities available as the pub is not open in the morning. Room smelled badly of damp and so did the bedding but the pub was shut when we returned so no way to ask for a room change, bathroom light triggered a mirror to shout out pairing mode every-time you switched on the light. No good for a family room in the night! Green emergency light above the door was so bright it was as good as having a light on the in the room and was not able to be turned off. Blood on the pillowcase…. Then to make matters worse the staff that were staying next door had their tv on full blast, had to eventually go and knock on at 4am to tell them to turn it down! Hardly slept a wink. Worst hotel I’ve stayed in a long while. Was booked for 2 night but we packed up and left 1st thing the next morning.
35trevorl (4/5): New Award ✔️ - So disappointed with this pub/restaurant at 8.20pm on a bank holiday Sunday we were told the bar was closed ? People were still eating and senior kitchen staff were still getting drinks. Also a guest arrived who had three rooms booked and asked if they could get food only to be told the kitchen closed at 7pm but plenty of take aways in town and bar closed WOW. Plenty of old awards on display perhaps a new one is available for the earliest pub to close in Scotland to close this early on on a bank holiday Sunday 😮 So hard to believe when the industry I work in is struggling to survive 😩

G2430HCallanc (10/5): You won't be disappointed - Back for the Carvery for the 4th time and it never disappoints. Welcomed by an efficient, pretty, polite, front of house. Allan the Chef certainly does not hold back with the delicious meats ( Turkey, Beef and Ham) all cooked to perfection. The quality and quantity of the veg huge. As for the Yorkie, we did not know whether to eat it or move into it ( huge ) table service from a beautiful polite young lady, with a white clasp in her hair, all in all, this is prob the best Carvery in SW Scotland. Well worth our 90min round trip from Castle Douglas we'll done BB 5*

Pre booked that I was taking my dog, but no dog pack was in the room. The television did not work, so after 2 people trying to fix it, we could only watch Netflix on someones account. Room 16
W2344FRcraigl (2/5): Awful - If you want to be ripped off and insulted this is the place for you. Bang average/poor food for high prices. Example- handful of Nacho’s with a bit of melted cheese £10. Splash of lime 80p. Glass of white wine £13 (bottle costs £11 in Tesco) . Could go on but can’t be bothered, won’t be back I I advise you to try lots of other venues in Moffat. Reading other reviews similar to mine so they obviously arnt bothered about trying to improve just know they have a passing trade and will get away with it.
M1834KXmd (2/5): Black Bull Inn — honeymoon suite: damp, broken promises, and poor service - A special stay was marred by a strong damp smell, poor ventilation, and a broken promise of a partial refund. Being asked to pay up-front and then dismissed the next morning compounded the disappointment. We booked the honeymoon suite for a treat, but on entering the room there was a strong, unmistakable damp smell. We raised it immediately. The team member on duty (Neill) came to the room, confirmed the smell himself, and explained there were no alternative rooms. He promised a partial refund in the morning, and as we were tired and unsure we’d find anywhere else nearby, we reluctantly agreed to stay. The following morning we waited around for roughly 30 minutes to follow up as agreed, only to be told reception wasn’t manned until 9 a.m. Despite Neill arranging to meet us around 7.30 a.m., he wasn’t there. The owner later messaged to suggest leaving the key on the bed or in a post box and added, “we don’t man reception until 9am.” The subsequent response from the owner read, “I believe you felt there was a ‘smell’?” and stated she wouldn’t offer a refund, only 25% off a future stay and complimentary breakfast—despite the prior agreement the night before. The shift from acknowledgement to dismissal felt deeply unfair. Room condition and health impact - Damp odour: Persistent throughout the stay and acknowledged by staff the night before. - Ventilation: No window to open in the room, so there was no way to air it out. - Health: I’m asthmatic and needed my inhaler a couple of times. Staying in a poorly ventilated, damp-smelling room is not what you expect—especially for a honeymoon suite. We were asked to pay immediately on arrival and felt coerced into staying despite the issue being raised at check-in. Agreeing to a partial refund later was the only reason we didn’t leave there and then. We tried the “bistro” for dinner. I was charged £20 for an overcooked burger served in a crusty roll rather than a burger bun. At that price point, you expect better quality and basic attention to detail. - What was promised: A partial refund, agreed in-room by the staff member who confirmed the smell. - What we received: No refund, and an offer of 25% off a future stay and breakfast. After this experience, there’s no chance we’d return, so the offer felt hollow. A honeymoon suite should feel special, not musty. The combination of damp, poor ventilation, unmet promises, and dismissive communication turned a planned celebration into a stressful night. I wouldn’t recommend the Black Bull Inn until the damp issue is genuinely resolved and commitments to guests are honoured.

Mixed messages about when food available eg ok on Monday but not Tuesday. Breakfast whenever it might be available is continental, at £11.95 a rip off.
Julesando (10/5): Excellent B&B in the center of Moffat - Lovely hotel in the center of Moffat. Rooms were very modern, nice touches with the molton brown products in the bathroom. Staff were amazing, very accommodating. Never ate or drank in the hotel as we are attending a wedding.
nigels529 (8/5): Good Quality Overnight Accommodation - The facilities are first class, well appointed bedroom - really comfortable bed and easy on street parking. The reason for removing a star is simply the level of mis-communication -the confirmation email offered restaurant facilities for the evening- discovered on check that restaurant facilities no longer available on Tuesday’s and no breakfast option. Whilst some great eateries in walking distance on reflection this information should have been available.

No smoked fish no seasoning then a bit fillet dried out lay over the top. V poor. Partner had haggis Bob bond.. more like small overcooked musket balls. No flavour or texture . Could go on to mains but they were worse. Staff attentive but no idea what to do.. like had to ask 3 times for cutlery and water..
Y5553EJkeithh (10/5): Very comfortable stay and dinner. - Very comfortable overnight stay on way from north Scotland to southern England. Room small but very nice. Church clock bells stopped at 11pm thank goodness and restarted at 7am. Had a very nice meal and pint in the restaurant. They even have a vegan/veg menu.

Beds were comfortable and pillows were perfect for me (2 pillows, one soft and one firm). Nearby parking excellent and safe. Bunk beds for the kids. Shower spacious and clean. Definitely stay there again.

nicholas408 (10/5): A hidden gem! - Booked very last minute at The Black Bull on a stopover on the way home. And what a great little find! On the downside, we were a little chilly and there was some traffic noise in the morning probably due to the single glazed windows. You can also hear the church clock chiming every 15 mins but it all adds to the charm. Moffat is a lovely place and so is the pub. We didn’t find it a problem not having a breakfast option, in fact it was nice to know we could just lie in until check out time! They do offer to book you into one of two local cafes if you wish so that’s an option. We also caught the end of the sunday lunch service just as we arrived and that was lovely, very filling and the desserts were yummy! The room was very well equipped, super comfy bed, the staff were all welcoming and helpful. Would definitely return.

thearchers1 (10/5): Stopover on the way to the highlands - The best dog friendly hotel when we arrived there was a little reading station set up in the room with treats and snacks for the dogs , the room was large and clean perfect , amazing food in the pub with even a menu for the dogs , which was so thoughtful , lovely hospitality from the staff too great stay highly recommend
Malvinasmice (4/5): Huge potential but disappointing - Not as advertised. Great location and huge potential but lacking some vital TLC We only found out the day before we arrived that there is no breakfast available which is not ideal with a family. The room was incredibly damp and the fan in the bathroom didn’t work. We reported it to reception but nothing was done. We’d booked for a family of 4 but there were only 2 towels / cups etc and no bathrobes as advertised. The towel rail in the bathroom didn’t work so there was no way of getting rid of the damp / condensation when the shower was used. A dehumidifier was provided in the room but didn’t work. We woke up freezing cold in the morning and had damp towels to use for the shower. It felt like a very unhealthy room to be in with condensation running down the windows, black mould appearing in parts of the bathroom, mould inside the coffee machine an underlying smell of damp and wet dog. Our room was directly opposite the outside bar area and we had raucous sounds to listen to until closing time. There was a bright green night light shining in the room all night long which was so bright it felt like a collapsed star was shining in our faces. The sounds of toilets flushing / cisterns refilling in adjacent rooms was very loud. We cancelled our return journey booking. Very sad as we had really looked forward to this stop over. We were also over charged in the restaurant for dinner.
hevs40 (6/5): Slightly Disappointing! - Let's start with the positives. Staff were friendly and helpful, and our room was very clean and tidy. However, our room was called a garden room, which is why we chose it as we were travelling with our pup. The room is just on a public lane opposite the hotel with ease of access to the street but no garden. There were no dog bowls or treats in the room, but I note that is mentioned by others. We paid an additional £25 for our dog, which is the most expensive charge we have ever had for a stay. Room had no hairdryer.
Bwthank (10/5): Exceptional Service - The staff here are exceptional. Couldn’t be more obliging and helpful. We were held up so would arrive after they finished serving. However lovely manager suggested we pre order and they’d keep it for us. And it was delicious too. Rooms are fab. Spacious, comfortable with every amenity. We had a dog friendly room - and there was a goody tray for her too!

We seen it on the web site the day we were arriving and thought it was our rooms as well as the pub itself. As we had a child with us we struggled to go anywhere for a drink unless we were eating.

Dog friendly fantastic service - Super family and dog friendly pub, loads of character and a warm welcome, the menu is amazing and there is a separate menu for dogs. Reasonable prices and great portions I had a fish pie that was the best I’ve ever had and what can you say about the haggis bon bons! My husband and I spoke about them for days! Fab kids menu too, there is even a separate room that you can request this was helpful as our dog can get a little upset in overly crowded/loud spaces. Service was amazing (thanks for the fire lighters!)
garyffc (10/5): Great stay as expected. - Great stay in a comfortable spacious very clean and cosy room for my wife,cockapoo and myself for 2 nights. Room was in a separate annex from the main building which suited us as we had our own front door that allowed us to come and go with our dog as we pleased. Only down side was that the bar and restaurant was closed over the winter which was a pity as we would have used both of them during our stay as looked well worth a visit. Will visit again tho after the winter.
johny557 (8/5): A historic pub with character - Heading down to Gretna for some Xmas shopping and had seen the hotel on four in a bed , we popped in to a warm welcome, a tremendous selection of drinks and an almost full pub, yet they found us a table,the food looked amazing,and plentiful, definitely need to try it out the next time, only soft drinks today, but we will definitely be back as the hard working staff can't do enough for you. Why not a five star ⭐, no ginger beer, however everything else is five star. Looking forward to returning for an overnight and some food.

Waitress took our order, and we asked for a wine list, but then she never returned to check our food was okay or to see if we wanted any wine. Pie was okay, but veg lasagne was left wanting, no dressing on the salad, and none offered. Had also been told there was a doggy menu, but again this was never offered, which would have kept our dog happy while we ate. Will return for drinks when staying in Moffat, but not for food.

clarejanec2022 (4/5): Had potential but disappointed - We were excited to come for a Sunday carvey on the way home from Gretna and the food looked great. However it was freezing cold. The Yorkshire pudding was cooked but cold inside, the potatoes and vegetables were luke warm at best. There was 3 of us and 1 of us got loads of meat, one of us got a smaller amount of meat and the other got 2 slices of very fatty pork and 1 slice of tough inedible beef. The pub was cosy, the staff were lovely and the food had the potential to be good and I would recommend the cauliflower cheese and parsnips but overall disappointed with our meal.
sheilao992 (10/5): Tasty food and good value - The Black Bull Inn is very dog friendly. The staff were pleasant and attentive. They have a varied menu, and we had fish pie with seasonal vegetables and a crusty bread roll and apple crumble with custard afterwards. The meal was tasty and good value. Good choice of beer.
susanrM6714TI (10/5): Perfect Hotel Stay - On the way to Loch Awe took a detour to Moffat. Had visited before for a meal but we were travelling with our dog, Poppy this time. The hotel is perfect for dogs, voted Scotlands No.1 Dog Friendly Hotel. Meals at the hotel are delicious, you must try the Sunday Lunch, the chef has been there for years Dogs are catered for - from the treats & goodies in the room, wetroom, they are welcome in the bar. There are also dog towels provided for those days were the weather is a little wet. I would recommend this hotel for either a short break or a week or so. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Can't wait for the next visit.
Nicola (8/5): Honesty is the best policy - The Hotel is obviously in new hands the room was fresh. Ate in there the first night , then cancelled breakfast for the rest of the stay as the standard of food was poor mainly deep fried.

Verified traveler (6/5): Mixed experience - The hotel has been refurbished to a high standard but there appears to be little attention paid to standards of customer service. A number of items were not available on the food menu although food served was good pub standard .Requests for items for the room were not met by housekeeping staff until further requests made. Room including bed not re-made during 3 night stay. This may be acceptable on New Years Day but not on next day. When bookings are taken for the festive period guests should expect that hotel would be staffed and services available to cover their stay. Clean towels were provided when requested. Some staff were very helpful and efficient but others do not appear to give the hotel much of a priority. Could be it was a bad time of year to visit but the festive period is surely important to the hospitality trade.
Verified traveler (6/5): OK but could be better - Hotels.com showed a 14.00 check in but it was only from 15.00. We waited in the bar and eventually we were taken up. The room had been ready from 12.00 so completely unnecessary to have kept us waiting. The room was clean and functional but will be staying elsewhere on our next stopover in Moffat

Emily (6/5): Noisy live band til late every Friday night - Our room was small but comfortable. Breakfast was really good, especially the porridge and omelettes. We know that when you stay in a pub it can be noisier than a hotel or B&B but it would have been good to have been warned at check in that there would be a live band playing until 12.30am in the bar which was immediately beneath our room. It wasn’t mentioned at all, and yet it apparently happens every Friday. Be prepared if you book for a Friday night that you won’t get much sleep as the amplified music and the crowd joining in with the singing will keep you awake until the early hours

Best to book breakfast and evening meal if needed. Both were really nice. Moffat is a beautiful town , very relaxed walk about.x

The staff were friendly and professional. Food in the restaurant and at breakfast was fresh, tasty and good value. Definitely plan a return visit.

Ruth (8/5): - Lovely room. Needs a mirror in the room one only in the bathroom. Also we stayed for two nights and they didn’t replenish the shower gel and shampoo. Which we had used and The empties left in the shower. Bathrobes were a nice touch. Staff lovely. Food good portions and very tasty.

Ashleigh (2/5): I cannot recommend a stay at this hotel - Be aware, you may not get the room you book… We booked a so called: ‘Deluxe room with King sized bed’, but the room allocated was nothing of the sort. The bed we had looked smaller than a double. Upon our request to be moved to the room we booked the proprietor argued that we did have the deluxe room and it is a King sized bed (rubbish). Furthermore he could not move us, as they were fully booked. Upon further challenge he refused any refund of the difference in room price, nor any other form of compensation (e.g. meal discount). Room heating - inoperative. Bathroom hot water - scolding hot (really – too hot!, my wife has a burn blister on her hand) Breakfast - average, serving staff (aside from the impromptu helper) were frantic. I cannot recommend this establishment.

Frank (8/5): A Pleasant Night In Moffat - A pleasant and comfortable place to stay that is handy for everything Moffat has to offer. Could do better with gluten free options but friendly and welcoming.

Duvet too thick and asked to pay before I even saw the room. I explained that it was customary to pay for accommodation AFTER you had used it.

The rooms were spotless and we enjoy two meals during our stay which were very nice too. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for them. Location was idea for exploring the town and the surrounding areas and the restsaurant/pub at the in. Was fantastic- great food and even better service. The staff were warm and friendly and breakfast was well worth the cost as well. We will definitely return!
jason (10/5): Overnight stay. - Was merely an overnight stay. Hotel has had a recent refurb so was really nice. Food was nice and well prepared but menu is a little limited unless you like pies, I do so was fine. Breakfast was very good and sustaining. The saturday I was there was busy and there didn't seem enough staff so service at check in and eating was slow.
