Guest Reviews
- Julie (5/5): Very rundown complex - Location & pub/restaurant Ridiculously small shower
Toilet seats falling off
Ripped carpet in hallways
- Akman (5/5): A mistake - I think it was okay for young travellers who does have high expectations of the place they stay. It is close to everywhere. Seems like close to the party. You stay in the room only to sleep after a long happy day. I made a mistake and did not realise how expensive this type of places has become. I did not want to go back years to my youth and stay in such uncomfortable place and feel not terribly safe. I ended up not staying. The prices have gone up so high, next time I have to be very careful and check really well what i am paying for.
- Kirsty (6/5): - The location was great. The showers were broken
- Leah (7/5): - I liked that it was really peaceful being up high in our room so we didn’t hear any of the noise downstairs and that we had a wonderful privacy and peaceful. That one of the beds had a broken wheel so it ended up being on an angle. And the shower handle was broken and it took a long time for the shower to heat up.
- Debbie (4/5): Once was great value - I've stayed here before and gave a good review, I thought it was great value for a run down but perfectly functional stay. Nothing has changed except it was now almost $200 which was a ridiculous price to pay for such a place The price increase is really not justified . This photo was taken from the bed
- Navpreet (1/5): This was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had, and I would not recommend this place to anyone - I was extremely disappointed with my stay at this hotel. The room was in a terrible state of cleanliness. The carpet was very dirty and stained, clearly not cleaned for a long time. Dust was everywhere, especially around the heater and furniture, making the room feel unhygienic and poorly maintained.
Basic hygiene and cleanliness standards were completely missing. For the price paid, I expected at least a clean and comfortable room, but instead, it felt neglected and unkept.
- Guest (10/5): Staff were nice to me and friendly. - location was good for me. All was good.
- Tine (7/5): -
- David (1/5): - Nothing Everything

- CARLOS (9/5): Great location - Location Noise from the bar
- Paul (1/5): Would not stay again! - Close to cruise ship terminal It was of poor quality. Not overly clean. Patches everywhere on the walls. TV didn’t work well, remote not at all. Arrived around 1:30 with check in at front bar. Go to bar staff who were not busy, then, but told couldn’t check in until 2pm. Not even given the paperwork to fill out. There was a marathon on that day and at 2 o’clock the bar had become busy. Trying to check in with luggage at that time was a chore as the bar is very small. Not impressed!!! Not great value for money.I would Pay a bit more and stay elsewhere.
- Valeria nasello (9/5): -
- Carolyn (8/5): - Location was great. Staff very friendly. Rooms basic, but forewarned about this. Nice and clean. Would havecbeen nice if we were told earlier, as guests that it was trivia night and needed to book a table for dinner as we missed out not knowing. The weather😂😂😂
- sharon (8/5): - Always good location Getting old now. Carpet was dirty and should be replaced not only in the individual rooms but common areas as well.
- Guest (1/5): DO NOT BOOK THIS PLACE. Stay anywhere but here! - Nothing! The service, the mouldy walls, the musty stench in the room, we were told we can leave our bags with the pub upon checkout at 10am so we can enjoy the rest of day sightseeing, but no staff member was there. We had to find a locker facility for our luggage.
Most disappointing place I have ever stayed. I’ve stayed in better accommodation in third world countries!
- Susan (8/5): -
- Ben (7/5): -
- Kenneth (3/5): If you want to stay in flea pit, this is the place for you - The location, centre of Sydney CBD The noise from the attached pub on both the Friday and Saturday night was unbearable. Friday night went on til 3am, Saturday night was earlier at midnight however the setup for the marathon started at 3am so not much sleep was had. The curtain was almost see-through. The light from the building next door lit the room better than the room light. The shared showers and toilets were disgusting.
- mary (10/5): Will be visiting again. - Been there before. Service great. Meal great too. Beds comfy. Will book again in future. Central to all. Public transport at your door.
- Brian (6/5): -
- Guest (7/5): It's a small old-school style room. You get what you are paying for. - Good location, cheap Odd smell in room, needed to air out a lot.
- McGuire-Barnes (2/5): This place is a bar and casino first, hotel tenth. - Bed was comfortable and the staff were lovely. Terrible noise insulation, I could not sleep at all. Not worth the price I paid.
- Jake (3/5): Don't stay there - Bad decision - Most of the staff were very nice and helpful. The accommodation part was VERY
outdated / very dirty / broken / smelly
My family and I were made to wait 5 hours to even enter the room to be told that the room was ready when in fact they didn't even clean it.
And to be placed in another room where the beds were broken.
*The kitchen facilities - very dirty (bugs crawling/flying out of the toaster ect. )
*The bedrooms - Messy/dirty/broken/smelly
*Bathroom facilities - VERY Dirty
Couldn't wait to leave (Never again)
- Glenn (7/5): Ok - Location Nowhere in room to put bags up off floor
- Erin (3/5): Good location, but wouldn't stay here again - The location to the cruise terminal was fabulous, the staff were lovely
Small heater heated the room well The building works happening on the building over the road, cranes and machine noise until well after midnight which we weren't aware of, so couldn't sleep
One of the single beds was missing a leg, so the whole bed was on a lean and needed propping up with a rolled up towel
There were used tissues in the cupboard under the sink
- Kevin (4/5): Disappointing -
- Julie (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (7/5): Excellent location & good value for money - Pub is very nice, in a nice building, located moments from Wynward station and less than 10 minutes walk to Circular Quay. Rooms are basic with very worn carpets etc, so avoid if that bothers you, but the family room we stayed in was a good size and clean & comfortable enough. Having a fridge & tea & coffee facilities was a bonus too. Separate bathrooms were clean & reasonably functional. Very good value for money all told. A bit more effort on the facilities would go a long way. The pub provides cereal, tea, coffee & milk for breakfast, but strangely no cutlery. We mentioned the lamp in our room needed a new bulb on our 1st morning, but it never got replaced. Not the end of the world, but got the distinct impression the guest rooms are not a priority.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hardy (4/5): Great location but a real dump. - The manager was nice when taking us back to the room after reporting issue with door lock. Door to the room was faulty - was apparently fixed the week before but not fixed.
The staff on check in were extremely rude and unhelpful.
The bathroom door doesn't shut let alone lock so anyone can walk in while you're naked.
The place needs a major clean, new paint and carpet.
- Pinkaew (3/5): Poor - none room was smell smoking , blankets not enough, shower room is too wet floor, lift too old
- Jeremy (4/5): don’t expect too much from staying here. - you get what you pay for. we were just one night in the city for an event the next day. I wouldn’t want to stay more than one night. the door lock were not very secure. the rooms were small. it just had a old musty feel to the whole place. if ghosts were real this place would have a few.
- Geoff (8/5): I received good value for money and I appreciated the architecture of the wonderfully angled windows - I received a very friendly and informative reception from staff. The room was perfectly suited to a single person and it was well prepared in every way for a guest. I enjoy staying in time-tested good hotels like the Grand, which are placed in stimulating locations and provide contemporary 'necessities' like WIFI and television. Nothing.
- Sadaf (7/5): Convenient, cheap place to lay your head - Convenient location. For the whole family into one room. Beds were clean and comfy. Showers were hot. Clean towels, hair dryer, bottled water, shower toiletries provided. We dined at the pub on the property for dinner. Food and atmosphere were great. Accommodation is old and dated. Slight musty smell. Shared toilets were not clean. Showers not cleanest. Like a hostel that’s fallen into disrepair. Still, we only stayed 2 nights and only to sleep, so it was value for money.
- Jamiemuddle (5/5): Great location is the pro - The location was perfect. 30seconds to Wynnard station and light rail. Easy access to airport etc via train. 10min walk to circular quay. 5min walk to Pitt Street mall and Westfield's. The hotel is very outdated and Old. The carpets are Grose and the room smelled very musky. It definitely needs a refresh.
- Chris (5/5): The room is functional is you're looking for somewhere to stay in the CBD. Definitely no frills. - The location is the redeeming feature of this hotel. A nice little pub downstairs to get a drink. The room was very basic. The light bulb was dim, the bed was passable, but not what I would call comfy. Everything is old. The TV is small and at an acute angle
- Chloe (5/5): Passable -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Aidan (1/5): Bad -
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (3/5): Never going to stay there again. - The hotel is close to the port. That's the only benefit of staying here.
This was my 3rd stay, and its really gone downhill. I will never come here again. This is the third time that i have stayed here, and it will be the last.
I booked twin share for two rooms, for 4 people , months before the date. The day before, i received notification that one room would be double. We are not couples. I had to quickly fix this situation, the night before our flight.
We arrived at the rooms, and they stunk musty. The carpets had holes in them. One room was really noisy, near the nightlife through until 2am, then roadworks and jack hammering from 6am. Not the hotels fault, but the windows are so old, that all the outside noise is very audible. The first room had no heater. When my friends dropped a card under the bed, the dust on the carpet, under the bed, was indicative that the carpet hadnt been vacuumed for months. Dust was visibly thick, and caused my friend sinus issues, and breathing difficulties.
The 2nd room you couldnt use the tv The remote didnt work. The carpet was all rotted underneath the fridge. The power points were all loose, and dodgy af. The curtains couldnt be pulled right across, because they were a poor fit, and not block-out. The room was lit up by street lighting.
The bathroom towels were very thin and cheap.
On the 2 previous times that i've stayed, the breakfast was wonderful. Lots of fruit, in a large fruit bowl. Several loaves of bread. Lots of spreads in the fridge. This time, no bread, no fruit, minimal cereal, a couple of condiment spreads.
When handing over the keys, in the morning, i made mention of the lack of breakfast. I was lied to, and advised that i must have eaten other guests bread, because they dont supply bread. I know that on my last visit, i was in the kitchen, when a staff member brought in 4 loaves of bread. It really is unprofessional, when you lie to guests. Just tell the truth, and say that you dont supply these items anymore.
- Miller (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (5/5): Loved the grand and its proximity to everything! - Close to every thing The 24 hour construction happening Next Door across the road all bloody night and morning, the noise was very loud and unbearable making it impossible to sleep!!!
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ngo (8/5): Good - Good Good
- Simone (6/5): Great location - Location and open late A little aged
- Kirk (5/5): Passable -
- Geoff (8/5): Very satisfactory. - I didn't have breakfast but the breakfast room, the 'kitchenette', was charming, with it's many paned windows and architecture. Nothing - good value for money.
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jo (7/5): Compromises for cheap accomodation in central location - Location was good. The staff were nice. There was no heater. Thin cream curtains only over the windows so light all night and morning. No wash basin in the toilets/ bathrooms, only in the room. Dance music out the windows till 11pm and then it was reasonably quiet.
- Ben (7/5): Good -
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lawrence (9/5): My stay was OK I booked room for night had operation on eye tried book it for another night - I got told too leave after I tried book another night through phone heard someone at door but being half deaf yrlled out didn't have worry about cleaning room because operation had lay on back for three days look at ceiling so decided book again through phone but don't know what happened got asked too leave by manager I think my fault for being half deaf did t hear properly stupid hearing and groggy from operation and cleaned which I had too inject through stomach stop blood clots so yes I wasn't going argue with him because I fully understand I stayed there couple nights before I went too hospital have operation and great all the staff was helpful and friendly even the manager after asking me too leave asked me if I was OK too carry my heavy bag and walking stick he was only doing his job there was a misunderstanding but I do understand the circumstances and will still recommend you so thank you and next time will wear my hearing aids
- Josh (3/5): Great location, friendly staff very run down rooms and accomodation facilities - Great location very friendly staff Very rundown rooms. The place has so much potential but sadly has had no work done on it in some time.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Darryl (5/5): Passable -
- T (8/5): Very good -
- Julie (9/5): Superb - Location , very clean . Kitchen or breakfast room very well stocked with t bags, crockery.etc Nothing, good value for money .
- Tusnelda (10/5): save an good - close , old style good food, Very friendly people
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Noisy in both the daytime (construction site opposite) and nighttime (rooms are above the pub, plus street noise till early hours) and windows couldn't be properly shut. Carpets are threadbare and stained, walls are dirty. Clean linen and friendly staff were the only positive (apart from the location which is great of course). I would not recommend for families.
- Michelle (7/5): Good for the budget conscious traveller. - Good location, open most of the day. Good option if you are budget conscious and want reasonably priced accommodation.
Worked with us when we had a change due to flight cancellation. Has a restaurant and a couple of bars. Cleaners did a good job with the shared bathroom and bed was comfortable. Has a sink in room, as well as mini fridge and other amenities. Had cereal available in breakfast room. Surprisingly quiet despite the area and construction work. Rooms need renovating, carpet very worn in hallways. Room not serviced over stay but didn’t mind reusing towels.
- Марина (3/5): Smell was too bad, it was impossible. - Awful smell in the room, had windows open for all 3 days but didn't help. Construction next door won't let you sleep. Oh, and be aware there are cockroaches in both apartment room and bath. Proximity to the city and lower price on the market.
- Breanna (5/5): Passable - Location was great. Get what you pay for. Definitely needs an update Reno. Only one single fan that didn't work in room. Heavy lift doors so make sure you have muscles. If claustrophobic don't shower here. Carpet needs to be vaccum or redone would be easier. Fridge door doesnt shut so was leaking all over the floor. Barely anything for the "breakfast" just small packs of cereal and long life milk (if available). Pub meals were pricey for what I got.
This wasn't our first time staying here but will definitely be our last as it's gotten worse in between stays
- Olga (8/5): Love the place, location , staff, food , drinks. All good value - Great location
Have stayed a few times already Needs new carpet and breakfast room fridge needs replacing
- Siqiang (6/5): Pleasant -
- Karen (6/5): - The property is very old and dated but clean. The carpet really needs replacing and is dangerous in some areas
- Angela (1/5): Waste of money - So close to where we needed to be Under the beds was full of dust and muck looks like had not been vacuumed in years and all my family is asthmatic so we were all sneezing through the night
- Saaim (5/5): Passable -
- Anthony (8/5): - Single night stay for business at a ver good rate shared bathrooms (single use) but most rooms seem to have a sink as well.
- Charlotte (7/5): Good -
- Matthias (10/5): - Very central location
- Kristy (3/5): Poor - Location Room smelt, TV didn't work, dirty sink
- Janine (1/5): Love Sydney, next time we visit we will not be staying there - The only thing we liked about this place was the location of the accommodation. The carpets in the main walkway to go to your room were worn that thin you could see the strings that the carpet had been woven onto. I think the carpet is as old as the building the rooms themselves. The linen was the only clean thing. We put clothes in the only wardrobe/storage area and they came out covered in dust the rooms with that dusty and smelly that my son‘s hayfever has never been so bad we had to buy a Telfa and they were double dosing themselves, we tried to put the fan on in the room and it was that loud. It would’ve woken up the rooms either side the shared bathrooms. The showers are that small that you had to turn the showers off so you could put shampoo in your hair otherwise it was getting washed out as you put it on in the shower on the fifth floor on the right as you came out of the we stayed in, the $15 showerhead. All the thread had gone so if you accidentally bump it it fell down the other shower. The lock felt like it was going to fall off and you’re gonna be locked in there. I have stayed in many pubs and these rooms or the room that we stayed in which was 53 was terrible absolutely terrible. I went downstairs to have a few drinks to relax $17.50 for a Jack Daniels and Coke glass.
- Shaun (7/5): Good -
- Elizabeth (2/5): Very poor - The nice staff Musty smell in bedroom, constant street noise, old clunky old lif - manual door, one shared run-down bathroom, no designated fire escape or plan fir evacuation, paint peeling everywhere, no air-conditioning, next to no room amenities, old worn out beds, totally inappropriate for a family, went and stayed somewhere else. Not to be confused with Sofitel Grand Hotel.
- Sabrina (1/5): Bad -
- Jo (7/5): Good -
- Sharon (8/5): Very good -
- Lisa (4/5): Disappointing - That it had a lift That there was not sink in the toilet or bathroom to wash hands you had to go back to your room and wash so ment your touching things with dirty hands
- Sharpe (3/5): An unexpected experience - The location and staff Their was paint peeling off the walls in the room. The floor needed a good clean the bathroom was not clean. The lift is very old fashioned and there are 2 heavy doors to open to get in the lift. Really hard work as you have to hold them open while you get out or else they close on you.
- Rachana (1/5): Bad -
- Alison (6/5): Pleasant -
- Debashis (6/5): Pleasant -
- Diane (4/5): Disappointing - We didn't stay. Cancelled our booking. Had to.pay for one night but. I was unaware the bathroom was a shared one. Also room was smelly and scruffy
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luke (4/5): Disappointing -
- Colleen (4/5): Okay-ish - The staff were super friendly and the location was great. No fridge or kettle in room. Couldn't find the switch for the fan, not airconditioned. The room was very noisy and the window did not shut properly. The curtains were also not blockout so the light from nearby construction and other buildings lit the room. Not even any tissues. Had to go and get some toilet paper. The bed was uncomfortable and there were no bedside lights. The carpet was worn through. I question the cleanliness of the shower facilities.
- Susan (2/5): - Great location for access to public transport. An old pub….in dire need of a refit and clean. Mouldy bathroom, peeling paint, musty rooms, worn and torn carpets, no hand wash basins in toilets or bathrooms.
- Gates (8/5): Very good -
- Ann (10/5): Convient to our holiday destination - Na All good
- Scott (6/5): - The room smelt musty.
- Catherine (2/5): Very poor - Great location and friendly staff but nothing else positive to report Dingy tiny space with limited air flow, you can hear noise down the alleyways as well as every other person closing their doors. I understand it was inner city but it disrupts you all night long. As for comfort I think it was one of the worst beds I’ve ever slept in. Looks nothing like the pictures.
- Paula (3/5): Won't be back - Location fantastic Rooms were old and dirty
- Neal (10/5): Again in sydney - First stay was excellent hence my return again after a trip within this trip, and was glad to return. Not only the convenience in location, yet helpful and friendly staff, in all parts of the process. I will return again, thank you for two pleasurable experiences at this hotel.
- Karen (10/5): - I was very impressed with the quality of this hotel for the price. It was an old building but very well maintained. The room was very clean and comfortable. Even the shared bathroom was not as I expected it to be, it was much better. The food in the dining room for dinner was very enjoyable and the complimentary breakfast was a nice touch. It was in the perfect location for our cruise holiday as it was not far to walk to Circular Quay.
- Paul (10/5): - Good location, great pub, great Guinness 👍
- Michelle (4/5): - The rooms were really hot, and lots of stuff did not work, like the bedside lamp, no lights in the dining area of accommodation, hair dryer in the shared bathroom, lots of channels on the tv, which was very, very small. There were incredibly bright lights outside the bedroom window which did not go off during the night. The shower was very small and not very clean. The carpet in the bedroom was filthy.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful though, and the pub is in a good location , close to light rail and train stations, and their food was pretty good.
It was cheap, but I expected better for the $$.
