Guest Reviews
- Monique (10/5): - Staff so kind and welcoming. Nothing was any issue.
- Stephanie (10/5): - I really enjoyed spending time at this hotel. The staff are very welcoming and wonderful people to be around. The staff made sure that I had a shuttle to go around town and a safe way to get there, had a secure place to store the remaining luggage, and they made delicious food for breakfast and at the restaurant. I would highly recommend to stay at the Stella Maris Lodge.
- FLAVIA (10/5): - The service provided by Stella Maris was exceptional. From the airport pick up, to the food and the rooms and the staff who were always smiling, and happy to help us. Keep up the great work.
- Thomas (10/5): - Room was clean and comfortable. Getting in and out was easy. Staff is very friendly.
- Joseph (10/5): At Stella Maris, You Are Family - The people that work at Stella Maris are wonderful and really set this place apart from other options. I stayed here for 6 nights around a Kilimanjaro trek and it was a very comfortable and warm stay. The staff are friendly and caring and it very quickly felt like my home away from home. The food was also delicious and I appreciated the mission of the hotel+school. If I'm ever back in the Moshi/Arusha area, I'll be looking to stay here again. Be aware that the power does go out in Tanzania from time to time, so it's best to be prepared for that.
- Anouska (8/5): - The staff is the heart of the hotel. Olivia, Innocence, Esther and Teddy were fantastic. Incredibly helpful. The breakfasts were delicious and huge portions. And the fruit juices are addictive.
The rooms are clean and great water pressure. The rooms can be a little dark and wifi is best in the reception area.
- Dean (10/5): - The Stella Maris staff is the highlight of the facility. They immediately become family and treat you as such. The facility is very clean and very well kept. There are limitations that are to be expected as a part of visiting the country and area such as occasional area power outages (which are only a brief interruption till the generator comes on) and periodic brief Wifi disruption common for the area. The food is excellent. The bed is comfortable with a mosquito net. Pillows are comfortable. But again, the staff are the stars of the show.
- Ramesh (10/5): - Exceptionally friendly and caring staff. We were greeted with a hug and a huge smile. Because of our flight issue and rerouting, we ended up reaching at 8:30 am, far earlier than our anticipated arrival of 3:30 pm. They were very nice and gave us a room at 8:30 am and we were able to catch up with our sleep (previous night was meant to be restful in Nairobi, which never happened due to flight delays and rerouting directly to JRO...so, we were really tired).
In the late afternoon, we were hoping to take their transportation service to go to the hot spring (about 50 minute drive each way). Instead of quoting a flat fee for the transportation, they told up that they would charge $70 per person. For 8 people in our group, it would have been $560 for a total of a 3-hour trip. That was too steep. We ended up hiring a taxi service who charged $120 total (for two different vehicles). I guess Stella Maris did not really ever offer that service in the past and was quoting prices based on several tour operators' prices...but the tour operators there take people for a day trip to the hot springs and include a lunch and entrance fee and they do charge about $50 to $70/person.
I think Stella Marris is a great place to stay...not fancy but great service and extremely friendly people. We found their gift shop offering to be very reasonably priced (as compared to shops in Arusha).
The transportation service (mis)quote notwithstanding, I would highly recommend the place.
- Randy (10/5): - The staff and service were so friendly and welcoming
- Kwie-Hoa (10/5): - proceeds go to a good cause
nice and clean property
friendly and helpful staff
is not walkable to center of town, but can ask for local taxi via front desk
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great stay before Kilimanjaro trek! - I booked one night here before joining my trekking group the next day. Hotel staff is the friendliest I have ever encountered. My room was clean and comfortable. Water needed to be heated up about 15 minutes before your shower but it is a minor inconvenience. Breakfast was huge and delicious. I look forward to the fresh fruit and smoothie every morning. The hotel donates/supports the nearby school as well. I would definitely recommend Stella Maris.
- Sarah (10/5): - Popular point of deprarture for Kili treks, which is actually nice, as you learn a lot from fellow trekkers. Mama is WONDERFUL, and her staff is responsive and attentive. Good food, comfortable/basic accommodations, and good value for what you pay. I totally recommend the post-trek massage!
- Owen (10/5): Great Jumping Off Point For Kili - Really friendly staff keen to make sure you are happy - a great jumping off point for climbing KIlimanjaro
Non for profit set up that funds the school in front of the hotel (which also means the road noise is kept to a min)
- Paul (10/5): Very Comfortable with TERRIFIC, Attentive Staff - Large, gracious hotel just outside of Moshi -- down a green country lane – catering to an international clientele, from which all the proceeds go to supporting a school for local children and orphans. The comfortable lobby, dining room and rooms have high ceilings, A/C, WiFi, and in some cases, views of the lovely garden (mine had a private balcony). The two meals I ordered from the chef were excellent. But it was the staff – namely the delightful Teddy, Skola, and Innocent – who were so unbelievably warm, friendly, and attentive, I will always remember them the way they treated me: like family!
- Donald (10/5): Heartfelt Hotel helping non-profit school program. - I chose this hotel due to it's location and pricing. But, wow!. what a great hotel. Very clean and accommodating. And all proceeds go to an elementary/primary school to help young students receive a better education. The people at the hotel support the school. All the hotel staff were amazingly kind and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff were wonderful. Rooms were so comfortable. The food was delicious
- Jon (10/5): - Very friendly and clean place. The staff made everything amazing
- Scott (10/5): Beautiful People - The entire staff is incredibly friendly & helpful. Stella Maris supports the local school that is on the grounds of this hotel.
You are treated like family.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay ahead of a Kili Trek. Staff was wonderful and we were able to arrange an airport pickup and a drive into Moshi.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A home away from home, felt like being home with my family, excellent service! will go back anytime.
- JIm (10/5): Great Staff - This is rural Tanzania, so facilities are not what you'd get on 5th avenue, but I don't think I've been at any hotel; in the world that had a friendlier staff or people who remembered my name everytime. They were ready and willing to do whatever they could to make it a good stay. They arranged events and drivers. There was always a cool drink waiting for us. I felt cared about. They treated me like family and I cannot recommend them highly enough.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Love! - This was my second time staying at Stella Maris! The hotel staff is beyond amazing! I feel very much at home here. If you are trekking Kilimanjaro it is a short distance away but the views of the mountain are stunning! The rooms are clean and very well kept! I can not wait to go back!!!
- Star Sunshine (10/5): Simply fantastic - Anyone who is preparing to climb Kilimanjaro knows how nerve wracking it is. Stella Maris Lodge creates the perfect environment, both before and after, for an adventure of a lifetime. I visited in September 2016 and everyone was so warm, welcoming and reassuring. The Manager is the most wonderful lady, and the food and rooms were great. The hot shower I had after the trek goes down as the best in history. Incredible place and people, thank you so much.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff were excellent. Made me feel very welcome right away
- Jan (10/5): YOU MUST STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!!! - THIS HOTEL WAS ONE ON THE HIGHLIGHTS OF MY TANZANIA EXPERIENCE.IT IS CONNECTED TO A GRAMMAR SCHOOL THAT IS SUPPORTS. 300 CHILDREN FROM 4-16 SANG AND DANCED FOR US. WE WERE ALLOWED TO VISIT THE CLASSROOMS AND MEET THE LOCAL KIDS. IT WAS A DAY WE WILL NEVER FORGET. THANK YOU STELLA MARIS FOR A BEAUTIFUL BUT ONLY 1 DAY STAY!
- dawniel (10/5): - the staff was incredibly attentive, we felt so well looked after and the food was excellent. also the best WiFi we had in all Tanzania
- Carol (6/5): - Stay was adequate. Really nothing special. Best part was the view of Kilimanjaro. Would look for something closer to the airport.
- Chad Huffhines (10/5): Incredible VIEW - Very accommodating...... Ordered Pizza in from Moshi. Arranged a Safari..... They were great!!
- alissa (10/5): Amazing lodge near Kilimanjaro - On arrival, I was greeted before I even walked out of the taxi! Staff came to help me even though they didn't need to. Absolutely amazing service from Teddy and Innocent. I was given a really nice room with views of Kilimanjaro. Amazing hotel and staff!
The kids at the school next door are also amazing and so friendly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We were very pleased with the staff and facilities, but the fact that the Lodge proceeds directly fund a school made this a very memorable stay
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Convenient from airport. Food was good. Staff was great!
- dana (10/5): Great people, very personal experience - Organized a transfer from the airport to the hotel - very reliable. They also gave us a drive to Moshi and picked us up. Food at the restaurant is great. All employees are very customer focused. We climbed killy and when we returned the concierge gave us a hug. Clean and beautiful rooms. Would definitely go back and recommend
- Ricardo (8/5): - Very friendly staff , good enviroment ,
- jennifer (6/5): Ok choice for Moshi - the hotel is basically filled with those climbing kilimanjaro. it is a bit pricey compared to other choices and there was a shortage of hot water in the shower--which was a huge bummer after not showering for a week on the mountain. the included breakfast was a good value and the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly
- carl (10/5): Best value near [but not THAT near] Kili Airport - Stella Maris hotel supports a local school, and offers great views of Mt. Kili for a reasonable price.
Service and staff are super. Take a walk around the neighborhood.
- Ela (10/5): Excellent location for reaching Kilimanjaro airpor - Clean rooms, tasty food, very nice and helpful staff.
Great view on Kilimanjaro from the top floor.
- Leo (10/5): High Quality Hotel for Kilimanjaro - The team at Stella Maris went above and beyond to help and were friendly and welcoming. Shaky wifi connection and shower pressure are my only two criticisms and both are of course to be expected at times in Tanzania.
- J (8/5): Lovely staff and view - Stayed one night and had a great view of Mt. Kili from the 1st floor. People were great, smiling and pleasant and willing to help. It was fun explaining to Teddy and the staff where I'm from, and they made me feel really welcome and a bit like I was with family. Plus Teddy was unbelievably understanding when I explained that a misstep on the mosquito net caused the whole structure to come tumbling down, and then I made things worse trying to fix it! But Teddy was more concerned with trying to reassure me! I really smiled a lot while I was here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great mission - Very nice and helpful staff! Rooms were comfortable and clean!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Stay here, support a school, have a great experien - This hotel is fantastic! The staff is incredibly nice and warm. The fact that all profits go to support the nearby school is a great feature, but the hotel itself is impeccable. We stayed here before and after hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro (which you can see from the balconies!), and it was the best choice!
- Thomas (10/5): sunrise on kilimangero - lay in bed and watched the sun rise on kilimangero. All hotel fees go to support primary school.
- Dennis (10/5): The Place to Stay in Moshi - Our stay at Stella Maris was wonderful plus the proceeds support a school next store. If you are staying in Moshi this is the place to stay. It's a little outside of Moshi proper but you can ask for a ride in if you would like and maybe get an impromptu tour.
- Natalie (8/5): Treated like family - From the second I walked in the door I was treated like family. Warm greeting, juice, offer to use an extra laptop in my room because I was so tired, etc. Hospitality is the key to everything and I felt right at home. I stayed in room 101 and had a great view of Mt Kili. The room was very comfortable and the bed was amazing - I had a great rest. The balcony attached to my room was also fantastic. The bathroom leaves a bit to be desired, but how much time do you spend there while on vacation? All proceeds go to the school they are building next door, so if all else fails, that should make you feel warm and fuzzy. In short, I loved it and would stay there again - actually, I wouldn't even consider staying anywhere else in/near Moshi. Thanks SML crew for a great stay!
- sae young (6/5): - Reasonabley ok
- Lynn (10/5): Warm welcome - The welcome is warm and personal. The atmosphere is home like and you are greeted by the same warm friendly people everyday. It is very different from staying in a conventional motel/hotel. I enjoyed my stay and if I were to return to the area I would stay there again. It exists to support a school.
- Baystars (10/5): Friendly Staff and Good location - Very good location for watching Kilimanjaro.Very friendly staff for several arrangement.
- jjannbee (6/5): View of Kilimanjaro on a clear day ! - Off season and Easter - so nice and quiet - reasonably price - clean and friendly. Food basic. It is a shame the school was built at the front of the hotel - it masks the view a little but it would have been cramped at the back ! !
- Sidra (10/5): Fantastic view of mount Kili! - Greeted by lovely, welcoming staff who continued to provide excellent help throughout our stay. Room was clean, comfortable and a very good size. Excellent bathroom and an amazing balcony overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro. We managed to see it just before sunset, absolutely breathtaking!! The hotel is a 30-40 minute drive away from Kilimanjaro airport and the staff are very helpful in arranging any transport needs throughout the stay. Really excellent place, great service and all helping contribute to a good cause - funds from the hotel go towards charity and helping orphan children in the local community. Would absolutely recommend this lovely hotel to anyone and everyone!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): View brill, good cause, staff great, rest average - Actual hotel is average at best. However money goes to a great cause. The staff are brill. View unbelievable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel outside of Moshi! - I stayed at Stella Maris for a day prior to my hike up Kilimanjaro. The hotel was charming and comfortable. Teddy, the hotel manager, was extremely helpful and made me feel at home! She helped me with meals and with laundry of my clothes. I wish I had the chance to stay at the hotel when the children were in school. I really liked the idea of the non-profit hotel associated with the school.
- Tamara/Joanna/Justina (10/5): Great , quite place with friendly staff - The Lodge is just 20 min away from Moshi. The hotel provides a mini van that can take you to and from Moshi for only $20/both way. Also, they can arrange the pick-up and drive to the Kilimanjaro International Airport. The staff is exceptionally friendly and willing to provide any help at any time. The room was clean and the bathroom had plenty of towels. We could enjoy the view of Kili from the veranda. The food was tasty and home made. This was a great place for the value.
