- Trevor (7/5): - The chaps behind the bar couldn't do enough to help - amazing The check out time strikes me as a little early but I worked with it.
The breakfast time was 10:00 ONLY, shame
But I guess if there are only a couple of guests, it may be difficult to offer time options
- Jessica (7/5): Great value for money. - Great location. Spacious room. Bed was one of those roll into the middle mattresses.
- Jon (6/5): -
- Leslie (6/5): - Oddly-shaped attic room (number 1) was a basic, no frills room, but bed-linen and towels were good quality and spotlessly white.
Carpet was new and clean.
Small (double) bed was surprisingly comfortable.
Plenty of teabags, nice Border-brand biscuits.
Friendly lad, Josh, took us to room and showed us "the book" which contained plenty of local information.
Good hot water and reasonable water pressure in the shower.
Decent-sized tv. The rather limited furniture (one bedside table, open shelving for clothes) was rather shabby.
Bedside wall lights appeared to be stuck to the wall with silicone.
One bulb (and two in ceiling fitting) not working.
The (patchy black) bathroom silicone badly needs replacing by someone who knows how to do it neatly.
- david (10/5): Lovely place. Enjoyed our stay -
- Stefan (8/5): - Great location and atmosphere in the pub downstairs was great Nothing to complain about
- Geoffrey (7/5): - Central to where I needed to be Breakfast not available until 9am - too late for days walking.
- Susan (8/5): A great visit ruined by a plumbing issue - The staff were lovely, very accommodating. We are at the pub which was reasonably priced and good varied menu. We had one problem they couldn’t fix. It is an old building with an airlock in the pipes. They rattled continuously until 8.00 but we blocked out the noise with the tv. But they rattled briefly every hourly until we fell into deep sleep at one as other people used the water.

- Steven (9/5): - Food was lovely...and the room I paid for a packed lunch to pick up at 6.am the next morning...but it wasnt made...so had to get money back
- Linda (6/5): Ok - Good location in centre of town.
Good size room and it had a bath and lots of hot water. Needs a bit of an update overall.
- Mary (9/5): This is a very good pub with rooms - Host, room No breakfast available before 9 am

- Andrew (1/5): worst place I have ever been at in my life minus 1000 is still too good for this dump - There is nothing at all to like about this place staff are bad and blame customers for there mistakes There is nothing at all to like about this place staff are bad and blame customers for there mistakes all meals were not fit to eat very bad room pipes were banging all night I had to turn a tap on to keep the from banging out of 5 meals that were served all were bad my burgers were burnt to a crisp the cheese on top was like plastic its the worst place I have stayed in my life If I were anyone I would steer well clear of this place

- Kirsty (6/5): Pleasant but very noisy on a Saturday night! - We were pleasantly surprised given some negative reviews we'd read. The decor was dated in places but we didn't mind that. We had what we needed after a long day walking, it was clean, warm, the beds were comfy and the shower was hot. Everything was great until the evening. Granted it was a Saturday night but the live music was so loud our room was vibrating. The hotel information stated that quiet hours were 10pm-7am but unfortunately it was outrageously noisy until 11.30pm. We also had an issue with a leak from the room above, we assume from the shower.
- Jazz (9/5): - Friendly staff looked after us felt well at ease ☺️
- Karen (10/5): - Great location in the middle of the village.
Very friendly and helpful.staff
- Sylvia (8/5): Great central location - Friendly and helpful staff, and a lovely spacious room with comfy beds. The water pipes were quite noisy at times.
- Sam (7/5): - Great location and room was huge with all we could need. Problem with plumbing meant noisy, banging noise, but owners aware and getting fixed.
Loud noise from The Club over the road, windows didn't stop it keeping us awake till 12.45am!!
- Penny (7/5): Good location - Location was good in the centre of town Room was musty which cleared when we opened the windows. Parking is not on site.
- Clair (3/5): Disappointing accommodation and stay. Would not recommend staying - Good central location. It was clean. Initially when one of our group asked as only 1 bulb was working it was fixed straight away Smell of paint, which made us have headaches and feel nauseated. Unable to open the windows. No heating on in the rooms and so it was cold. The breakfast was late and 2 had to be returned as unedible. (We did get a refund for the 2 breakfasts).
Asked to speak to the manager/owner to discuss the issues we’d had but this never occurred.
One of the rooms had a leak and water (from the bathroom above when the shower was used), One of our group only stayed for one night as they found it unsatisfactory.
We have messaged the accommodation since our return home and not had any correspondence back.
- judith (8/5): Perfect place for a stopover. Such good value- it would have cost more to stay in the nearby hostel! - Comfortable bed.
Very welcoming and amenable landlord The bedroom was too warm for me
- Brendan (7/5): Very nice, would stay again. - Location is ideal for access to the dales, didn't have the breakfast which you order the night before.
- Robert (8/5): - Large, clean comfortable room, ideally situated in middle of town. Shower not working upon arrival but we were re-located to a different room and given a complimentary dessert with our dinner for the inconvenience, so it was all dealt with very well.
- John (8/5): Friendly staff clean and central location would definitely book again - Central location Didn’t open till 12 to drop bags off
- Ann (2/5): Give this one a miss . - Location It was old and dated. The carpets were holding the floor boards together. The room was cold with no central heating only a tiny portable radiator. The bathroom floor was the same with ripped lino. . There was very little food on the menu as the claimed it hadn't been delivered. Looks like its on its last legs . I wouldn't stay there again
- Hukins (4/5): Unfortunately we wouldn't stay again - Bed was really comfortable The road outside the hotel was extremely busy all night the room wasn't worth for what we paid more like £60 for the night would of suited the lax doing breakfast tried his best but unfortunately we had to get our money back

- Susan (5/5): I was directed to the room went to it then out for a meal. Had to buy breakfast in the morning elsew - No breakfast available room clean Room too hot
- john (3/5): I expected better. - The staff were friendly and helpful. The room had no bedhead lighting and the room light switch was on the other side of the door which only was found by the street lighting outside. The room had no chair to sit on. The bathroom was well equipped but the 'backlit' mirror did not appear to be connected to the mains electricity.
- Mark (3/5): -
- Evie (3/5): - The staff were lovely. The room had stained carpets, condensation and leaks by the window. Stains on the walls. TV had no channels. No wifi in room. Wrong breakfast order was given. Toilet in the room made noise for 10mins after flushing. Damp on the walls. Lamp didn’t work. No lampshade on main light so super bright in the evening.
- Lucy (4/5): - Convenient location Room was worn and stuffy - no fan and the window in the bathroom didn't open to let in air.
- Richard (5/5): average - The property was ok parking is horrendous and no breakfast for the money was poor
- Alan (6/5): -
- Gemma (3/5): -
- David (9/5): enjoyable - had a great time room was clean staff were friendly
- Alex (7/5): Nice staff clean room nice food - Location Slightly dated
- Philippa (8/5): -
- Lynne (10/5): Great Stay - Everything was lovely 😍 Actually thought breakfast was in the price, but it wasn't.
- Richard (7/5): Great pub/ accommodation needs tlc - The pub including drinks food and staff was excellent. Unfortunately the room we had needed some work.
Wallpaper hanging down in the bathroom/ the bathroom tile paint peeling/ the mastic around the bathroom completely comes a way and the walls and doors marked and scratched. Tv and bed great just a pity the decoration and finish let the stay down. We was in room 6 Tv
- ryan palfreeman (8/5): - Very Welcoming, great location, clean and comfy
- Catherine (7/5): Good value no frills accommodation - This pub with rooms was based in the centre of Kirby Stephen and provides a good base. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. The decor was a little tired and the room was very warm.
- Caera (10/5): Great stay, had everything needed. Josh was very helpful. - It was well located, quiet, clean, comfortable and warm and the shower worked well Nothing it was great.
- Norbert (5/5): -
- John (6/5): -
- christopher (10/5): Had a good stay and meals - Central location this is an old pub so is quirky but a good place to stay, food was ok beer is very good Location
- Jonathan (8/5): - Good riddance on Nothing
- William (7/5): - The bed and pillows were particularly comfortable.
The aesthetic was nice and it's in a very convenient place for the town. The Staff were friendly enough. I admit I have high standards for cleanliness. This place didn't really meet them. I didn't feel comfortable walking around barefoot on the carpet. The bathroom was lacking in places. Mould on the seals, the shower head was covered in some kind of gunk. There were cobwebs all around the sealing of the bath/shower as well.
We were in a room next to the boiler, this was somewhat unpleasant but we got used to it. Could have done with warning there.
At least one of the lights above the bed didn't work.
- Kelly (10/5): Bar staff and open fire food was amazing loved our stay thanks - The food was absolutely amazing
- Ingrid (4/5): -
- Alex (7/5): -
- Richard (10/5): - Location for us was perfect. Nice quiet room at the back. Street parking only.
- Marie (5/5): Not satisfied at all - Location was accessible to shops and walking as planned. Breakfast was ok, no brewed coffee and toasts though Too small room, hardly moved. 2 nights had smell beers and smoke in the bedroom. Room is generally uncomfortable.
- Speck (5/5): Convenient for what we needed for two nights - It’s located in the centre of town which is a bonus. The staff were friendly and helpful. It needs money spending on it to bring it up to an acceptable standard
- Pam (7/5): -
- Christine (7/5): Great location - Location Some noise
- Peter (7/5): -
- Bryn (5/5): Overpriced - Staff were very friendly Very overpriced for the room.
- Clare (9/5): -
- Valerie (7/5): -
- Raymond (8/5): Great stay in traditional pub on main street - Excellent room in a traditional pub on the main street. Nice view from room. The only downside was the bar area during the evening was a bit noisy so we didn't feel inclined to eat. That said it was a Saturday so to be expected.
- David (8/5): - Good staff, enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks in the bar after a hard day of outdoor persuits Shower didn't get more than luke warm (room 6 if the hotel wants to investigate)
- Wendy (4/5): Poor facilities have spoiled this lovely looking building. - The staff were very welcoming and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
The food at lunchtime was good and the breakfast was delicious.
Our room was a lovely big room and we soon got used to the uneven floor. I enjoyed watching life out of our windows at the front of the hotel.
We were not troubled by the street noise, I guess the secondary double glazing was doing its job.
The beds were comfortable and warm. The tea and coffee facility was provided, but it was placed on a very small, low down, bedside table. This meant that pouring from the kettle resulted in steam coming up into my face, or having to crouch down and pouring at a difficult angle. There was no lighting next to or near the kettle, again making things difficult.
There was only one small bedside table between the two beds, which had a bedside table lamp on it, leaving little room to put a drinking glass and a pair of glasses, for two people, on it. There was no room for a book or watch.
There was no a chair to sit on and relax in.
One of the bed was terribly noisy eveytime my husband moved.
The bathroom was quite awkward to negotiate getting to the toilet as it was directly behind the door and it was very small. The basin had a crack in it and the silicone around the bath was not in a good condition at all.
There was constant water filling the toilet cistern and what sounded like banging pipes, which meant being woken up by loud banging in the middle of the night.
The lighting was very poor. The one ceiling light was dim and the one bedside light was also dim. Everything was very dark.
The whole room needs a complete makeover. It is a lovely size room, with great views over the high street. It has great potential. Starting with reconfiguring the bathroom.

- Robert (4/5): Overpriced for poor facilities - Friendly and helpful staff, and good location for the C2C The property was generally run down. My room was disappointing - no bedside table or light, no power anywhere convenient, and windows that didn't open. Poor value for money - my impression was they're exploiting their location on the C2C to overcharge. No dinner available - chef's night off, but this isn't what you want when walking the C2C.
- Simon (5/5): A bit tired and not great value for money - Good location Beds were very squeaky and duvet was lumpy. No food was available on the Thursday night we arrived as it was the chefs day off. It would have been nice to have been told that before we arrived
Breakfast was very poor. No fruit and very limited options. I had the poached egg on avocado muffin which was overcooked, hard egg and Luke warm
Not good value for money

- Gerald (10/5): Wedding Weekend - From the second we walked in we were greeted with a friendly hello and were booked in straight away with the owner helping to carry luggage up to our room. It was a great location for a family wedding we were attending, we did not eat there in the evening but the breakfast was cooked fresh and was hot and tasty. Lovely friendly staff and nothing was to much trouble, would definitely stay there again With being in the centre of town parking was a bit of an issue although this was not the fault of the Black Bull it is just the nature of the location, this would not put us off from staying there again
- David (8/5): - Pleasant pub in the middle of Kirkby Stephen. Handy accommodation for a nearby wedding. No breakfast available in the morning, had to use local cafes/shops.
- Kathryn (8/5): Great pub stay, nice meal and breakfast - Convenient location, comfortable room and friendly staff. It was all good
- Kate (6/5): Expensive for what you got - Good location and understand under new ownership. Rooms very tired, very poor value for money atm, hopefully this will improve.
- Kate (5/5): -
- Liesa (10/5): - The staff were very friendly, and felt like family atmosphere
- Melissa (6/5): Room to hot to sleep wouldn’t be returning as that’s main reason for staying. - Very friendly staff The room was exceptionally hot. Even with the window open and the fan on it was to uncomfortable to sleep.
- Tracy (3/5): Very disappointed with room finish and quality, entrance scruffy, personally we would not stay again - Overall we were extremely disappointed Peeling paper in bathroom, peeling tiles, plug sockets cut into skirting incorrectly and could not use 4 of them. Room cramped bed pushed against wall. Entrance scruffy, poor information. For what we paid it was extremely poor value
- Wood (10/5): - Brilliant staff, good food, extremely comfortable bed Nothing to dislike about our stay
- Richard (8/5): -
- Kelly (7/5): -
- Janet (5/5): -
- steven (6/5): Average - Room was neat, tidy and clean Restaurant area was not very clean with barman doubling up serving drinks and food. He was alone and apologetic but very nice.. not his fault
- Graham (5/5): - Location Noisey not very clean
- Annie (8/5): -
- Sean (8/5): Adequate facilities and comfort , just overly warm - Great location , comfortable bed , plenty of room It was very warm even with a fan blowing constantly, didn’t help that the industrial size boiler was in a cupboard in our room , it was like a sauna . Other than that it was a lovely room .
- Peter (10/5): A lovely place to stay in a lovely town -
- madeleine (5/5): -
- Thorlene (9/5): -
- Anna (7/5): - Great location, friendly staff, good food and well priced bar. Room average but suited our needs - good sized room Small bed
- Simon (6/5): - It's very noisy at the weekend. Could use some updates and refresh in the accommodation.
- Thomas (4/5): It was okish - Location Dirty towels from previous guests still in room
