Guest Reviews
- Barb (10/5): - Size of room was large. Little separate sitting room to have tea. Small fridge was appreciated. Staff were lovely.
- Connor (10/5): - Nice staff, good area near train station and have lots of restaurant options nearby.
- Linda (10/5): - Loved the atmosphere, close to the train station and everything else you need
- Guy (6/5): - Wifi not up to standards.
- Jennifer (10/5): Loved it! - We loved this Ryokan! Very cute Japanese style rooms, we stayed in one with a private bath and it was spacious. Great location, walking distance to everything. Really
Good value for price and for an authentic stay.
- filippo (8/5): - Great place but in February it was not super warm inside the room and the bathroom was freezing, same for the corridors to get to the public baths, except this everything was amazing
- John (10/5): - Loved the decor - took lots of photos of the room and entry court.
- Tracy (10/5): - It was in a great location; close to the station. near shopping, & lots of dining options nearby. Staff was very nice and friendly.
- Joel (10/5): - We loved our stay here. It’s a traditional ryokan that feels straight out of the 70s with gorgeous furniture and rotary phones. The rooms are a good size with comfy mattresses. The location is good, only a short distance from the train station. The onsens are great and often empty so you get them to yourself. The staff speak limited English but are helpful and friendly.
- sonia (10/5): - Très bien situé, tout se fait à pieds. Bel endroit, très propre.
- Robert (10/5): - Proximity to rail station. Accommodating staff. Very comfortable sleeping.
- a (10/5): Amazing stay in a traditional room & building - Amazing stay in a traditional room & building.
The room was huge with all amenities needed. The area was great for walking, shopping, close to the main train station.
The staff was friendly & helpful.
- Michael (10/5): - Felt like an authentic japanese place to stay. The floor boards are a little squeaky and place is far from new but this place was perfect for us, the onsen was nice (male separated from female). We tiok some pics of ourselves in the provided japanese bathrobes, downstairs there is an area where a traditional fireplace would be which was great for photos.
- Richard (8/5): - Overall good for price. Bathroom shower was average and towels a bit thin. Room and staff pleasant
- Jennifer (10/5): - Staff are very kind and room was wonderful.
- Yeow Ping (8/5): - No shower room inside the room.
- ADRIANA (10/5): - We definitely stay again !
- Verified traveler (8/5): Takayama stopover - It was a ryokan but really small to be advertised suitable for 3 persons. The walls were really thin and noises from the adjoining room was fortunately stopped by front desk.
Sufficient to sleep but not luxuriate in.
- Wendy (10/5): - I hadn’t realized this was a ryokan (or perhaps ryokan like). The rooms were traditional with a lovely seating area and there was tea and croissants. The Onsen was lovely! The shower/bathroom in the room had questionable water pressure and there was definite air in the lines causing it to blast out or be inconsistent. The rooms are a bit dated (rotary phones! Ha!), but the location was great and overall it was a positive experience. Having my name on the entry and on a shelf for slippers in the entry was a sweet touch.
- Kate (8/5): - A great choice. Close to everything and very authentic.
- Katherine (10/5): - This was a lovely stay in a spacious room. The fridge and AC were great additions. The staff was very friendly, and they were very kind when I asked for a larger hall jacket. The location was amazing, and I spent most of my time walking around nearby. It was quiet and well priced!
- Sarah Jane (10/5): - Fabulous location, super cosy, traditional ryokan. Arriving to find a warm welcome with our name at the entrance was a lovely touch. Beds were nice and comfortable. I highly recommend this ryokan.
- Ben (6/5): - Good sized room and relatively easy to find however, for some reason they were not serving breakfast on either of the two morning I was there. Part of the fun of staying in a ryokan is to enjoy traditional food so I was a little disappointed by this aspect.
On the positive side, the room was a very good size and typical ryokan style. The sento bath was good and included in the price.
- Carol (10/5): - Lovely authentic Japanese hotel with a gorgeous touch. Love the table cushions and Japanese tea set provided. The onsen was amazing and beautifully clean. All soap and towels provided Room was amply large enough. Central location. Close to everything of interest. Staff friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - clean and good. will come back. the hot spring is good
- M (8/5): - Property close to train station and attractions. However, it is not as clean as we expected.
- szegroup (8/5): - The location is great. Room is clean an spacious. Staff are nice. The public bath is clean and tidy. Will recommend to friends.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Traditional ryoakan close to the train station, restaurants & places of interest. Very quiet location with a public onsen. We enjoyed our stay here.
- Ceddy (8/5): - The property had nice little nooks to sit and relax in the lobby area.
No elevators made it difficult with heavy luggage. The bath was nice but small and rustic.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The main problem is the water supply. We payed extra for a private bath facility and Bathroom is fine . But the water is inconsistent. We ended up using the bath in the Onsen . Through out our stay .
- P (10/5): - love this place. wish i have more time to stay. just a few mins walk from the station. good place to eat and shopping is around.
- Brant (10/5): Traditional Japanese Experience - It was my first stay at a traditional Ryokan with Onsen and it was a wonderful experience. The hotel is also in a wonderful location between the train station and the part of town with all the tourist sites
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Close to train station & old town
- Verified traveler (8/5): - traditional style inn with shared bath and futons to sleep on.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Thi ryokan was in a good location within walking distance to the station. We enjoyed the onsen baths that were onsite. The Japanese breakfast at the hotel was fantastic.
- Sue (6/5): Good location but tired property - A good location but a tired property. The staff were very helpful. Although there wan’t a public lift, they took our heavy suitcase up to our 3rd floor room in the staff elevator. The room was spacious - more so than any other more modern hotel room we have stayed in Japan. The mattress on the floor was a foldable one which meant it had ridges which made it uncomfortable to sleep on. The worst aspect, however, was the shower in our private bathroom. No water pressure and the water temperature fluctuated constantly between hot and cold.......we called it the torture chamber!
- Kent (8/5): Mix feelings stay. - Hotel exterior and level one look new and nice! :)
But bedroom and lady plubic onsen are aged! :(
Staff: English speaking staff in the day but evening staff only speak Japanese. All staff are friendly. :)
There are not lift in hotel, so you have to carry your belonging up to level 2 or 3 by the stair. :(
- Keith (8/5): Comfortable in a great location - We stayed one night in a room with a private bath . The room size was excellent including a seating area for two over looking a small private courtyard. Very comfortable however the hotel is looking tired and old so would not rate as 4 star . I think to be fair 3 star. But was charged 4 star rate .
The Japanese breakfast was fantastic and a wonderful experience for us and would highly recommend.
Location was excellent just 5 mins walk from train station very easy flat walk
- Verified traveler (2/5): Never come again! Poor quality and OLD - The staff are cold and unfriendly. The receptionist just simply say a few sentence and does not welcome us to visit. Her attitude is really bad and does not introduce the facilities and how to access our room. In the whole stay, she never says “thank you” and we did have hard feeling. The food is fair but the quality of the hotel is bad. It looks very old and dirty. You can find many flaws, dust and dirt inside the room. There is NO LIFT inside the hotel so you have to carry luggage by yourself and no one would help you. When we checked out, no one says good bye or thank you to us which is the basic manner or normal culture from JP. We paid almost 1k for each night while other hotel could offer a better attitude, quality and facilities with This price. Please avoid to book this hotel if you want to have a happy and enjoyable stay because you will feel unwelcome and sleep on a small, dirty and uncomfortable bed. I hope the owner could improve the quality and train the staff more to at least “act like friendly” since the experience is really bad to us!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Perfect location, only five minutes walk from the train station also great location for going out to dinner. Loved the setting and the room. Breakfast was delicious. Would not change a thing and highly recommend this accommodation to any travellers.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A large room, good location, onsen in the property.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Was very warm and felt welcome when I was there.
- palmania (10/5): - The great experience of Japanese Ryokan in the finest old town - Takayama.
Close the Takayama’s old town, morning market and etc.
Love the place and wanna go back again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I enjoyed the public bath, particularly being there alone. Also found the location very convenient to bus and restaurants/shopping.
- Chai Ying (8/5): Overall is good - All is good except we need to climb 3 floor and the staircase is quite steep. Not suitable for senior people. They will help to carry luggage if needed. Bathroom is quite small.
- Yoda (6/5): - I think it's okay to compare the price. Of course the facility is old. But the location is close from station and the hotel provides breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Old not very well maintained but the location is good.
- Sunbris (8/5): - Close to JR Takayama Station and Nohi Bus Centre for the bus to Shirakawago. Breakfast was beautifully presented. You have a choice of either Japanese or Continental breakfast. You get asked for your choice each morning at breakfast for the next day. Even if you choose the same style of breakfast, you won't get the same dishes as the actual items on your breakfast change every day. That is a nice touch. The room is so roomy (the biggest room on this trip). We booked the Japanese-Western Style rooms with private bath that can fit three twin beds. We asked for two rooms on the second or third floor next to each other or close to each other. We got two rooms on the third floor next to each other, thank you. The bed was very comfortable with the warm and fluffy blanket. We knew there was no lift. My elderly parents walked slowly going up and down the stairs. And the bathroom and the bedroom have a step up from the front entrance area to the room. That required a bit of getting used to. If you are travelling with elderly people, please bear that in mind. Overall, we had fun staying in this ryokan and it was a memorable experience, especially when I was running late for breakfast and I had to run down the stairs into the breakfast room skipping across the tatami mat. There was a kind of an echo from the floor reminding me of certain scenes from the Studio Ghibli anime My Neighbour Totoro.
- Tim (10/5): - Very affordable ryokan near the train station and walkable distance to nearby attractions. Stayed in the Shared Bath and Toilet room. The toilet is right outside our room, whereas the shared bath is on level 1, which gave us reasons to walk around wearing the yukata (provided). Totally exceeded our expectations for the price!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good location, ard 7 mins by walk from bus and train station. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby. However, there is no toilet in room, not convenient even public toilet just next to the room. The toilet next to the room is japanese style, not convenient also.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Short walk from bus station. Nice spacious Ryokan style room modified with mattresses instead of futons. Our beds are very comfortable. A nice sitting area with table and chairs overlooking the street. Separate bathroom and toilet at the end of a small corridor - quite cold in there though (November). Excellent Japanese style breakfast (you can choose western style too). A very energetic older lady served breakfast to us and explained what each dish is. Very nice homey touch.
- Amy (10/5): - We had a great stay at this hotel. Will definitely come back again. Easy access to Nohi bus station and restaurant for good hida beef.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Okay Hotel. Japanese style. Very central which is good. Bathroom are cold.
- Gerry (2/5): - Terrible front desk staffs, bad hospitality. In reservation, no mentioning about private bathroom & toilets
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice place, easy from bus station just turn left and walk 2min.
- Natalia (8/5): - Great hotel and nice onsen. Close to train terminal and central town.
- F J (8/5): - Great first experience in this ryokan hotel with veey convenient location just few min away from train station and Takayama town centre. Fantastic Japanese breakfast service. Very friendly staff and great experience overall in Takayama.
- Anna (6/5): - The hotel is quite old & basic. Not all floord have Western style toilet.
- John (8/5): - Nice traditional Japanese ryokan experience. Situated close to station and old town. Breakfast was great.
- Olga (10/5): - Beautiful garden. All you could need in the room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Walking distance to the train station (if not carrying much luggage). Very comfortable bed. I loved it
- Amber (8/5): - Good location and price. Slightly dated building but clean with lovely staff.
- JOSE MANUEL (10/5): Good value for money, nice tradicional Japanese - It was a good opportunity to stay in a Japanese type hotel, shoes off at the entrance, room carpet, low beds, typical and excellent Japanese breakfast, well located walking distance from main station and tour buses.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Just a lovely ryokan stay, friendly staff, traditional house with lovely yukata:) love it
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- pb (8/5): Great location. Comfortable hotel. - Counter staff were ok, not great. Other staff were very helpful. Hotel and room were clean and comfortable. Would recommend for a cheap and easy stay in beautiful Takanawa.
- Nguyen (10/5): A cosy stay! - I'm in love with this town. During our stay, we were able to see the snow. How the snow changed the scenery overnight is quite incredible.
- Mabel (8/5): 3d2n room with private toilet and shower - Location:
We like the fact that its near the Railway station and bus terminal..just 5 mins walk. Upon arrival, we saw our name reflected on the board outside...very personal. There is a free flow of natural ice green tea to welcome the guests.
Room:
A quiet sector and we like the layout of the room; upon entering the room is a basin, next is our tatami room with 2 western beds. Balcony with outside view was breath taking..witnessing snowing in the morning. Toilet and bathroom right at the end of the room.
The only disadvantage is no lift so we park our big luggage with them at reception and brought up 2 small luggages for our stay.
Breakfast:
Choice of western or japanese. We chose the former...very good set and different items on both morning.
Facility:
Love the onsen even though its small but very cosy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): A good hotel to stay for a couple of days - Quite a cosy environment, and is conveniently located.
- Ngoc (10/5): Nice Japanese style hotel - Very friendly staff. Good breakfast. Choice of Japanese or Western breakfast.
Hot spring public bath but seemed small. We did not use it.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Close to old quarter - Simple hotel in a good location. Very spacious rooms, old but clean and well looked after. Beds were very hard. Was surprised to be told there was a curfew between midnight and 5am. We had a room with private facilities but be aware if you booked one with shared facilities that tattoos are not allowed. I believe this is common for many Onsen but when you book a hotel room and this is the only bathing option?
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful hotel to stay in the area - Place has a very traditional feel. Located in a quiet street it is very peaceful. Close to bus and train central station. Also with many food and shopping options nearby. Less than 10mins walk to the old market street. The ryokan is beautiful, with a large comfortable onsen bath. Staff were nice and hospitable. Room was clean, well maintained and comfortable. Love this beautiful and traditional ryokan!
- cocoprang (10/5): Japanese style hotel in Takayama - About 5 mins walk from JR station. Staffs are very nice and hospitality. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The are also public bath (onsen). Breakfast is good.
- Ryan (8/5): - I like the Japan Cultural style with the facilities all in, especially the room.
- Char (4/5): High price but poor quality - When I first checked in, I wasn't been attended, the staffs were having lengthy conversation. The room was poorly renovated with unfixed toilet ring, dirty carpet and cupboard, water stained ceiling and walls.
Though it's okay to stay if it's a youth hostel, but as a hotel charged at high price, it's not worth the money.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Retro and Rustic - Very big room which is hard to find in general in Japan. The facility itself was a bit rundown but gave off a very authentic feel. The walls are thin, neighbors were very noisy.
- Michelle (8/5): Lovely traditional lodgings - We really enjoyed our stay here. The location is good, staff were very helpful and it was a good experience to stay in a ryokan. The only downfall was one evening we could smell cigarette smoke. We called reception to see where it was coming from (partly for safety, partly because we dislike smoke) but our Japanese is poor so we couldn't work it out. If you are asthmatic I suggest you ask for a room away from possible smoke sources. Apart from that, everything was great!
- john (8/5): - Overall good value. Friendly staff.
- Mahroo (6/5): Run-Down - This Ryokan is rundown and old. It reminded me of a very old beat-up motel that is turned into a Japanese style hotel. Even the beds are not traditional. There are western style mattresses that are placed on the floor.
The breakfast is very charming though. The food is pleasant and the experience is great.
- Kathy (6/5): Pretty decent ryokan. - A convenient location. At least 5 mins walking from the train station and also to the market. The place was decent. Moderately traditional & there's a public bath.
- Wai yin (8/5): - Location is good. The room is clean but no lift. Mattress not conformable.
- Kira (10/5): Wonderful hotel! - Wonderful hotel not far from the station. My name was on a welcome plate as we entered. Our room had no privite bath (had a wc) but the wonderfully hot onsen made up for that! There were lots of other little moments that made the stay memorable
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hoyel - Hotel is on perfect location and walking distance from everything. It's 40 years old and has a bit unpleasant smell on some areas. We have arrived to hotel about 1.30 pm. Our rooms have not been ready. Check in os 3 pm. We have been able to leave our language at hotel.
Rooms are spacious. Bed was very comfortable. In fact it was a real mattress on the third floor.
Breakfast was nice, some combination of Japanese and Western. staff with limited English but friendly and polite.
- Kristianto (8/5): overall its Great - +
Near train station
Big room
Onsen
Clean
Breakfast awesome
There is a very delicious ramen nearby hotel
-
The young woman at receptionist could have been nicer, she's not too helpful
Booked under 1 booking numbers, but got 2 rooms separated
- Verified traveler (4/5): Crumbling and sunky-feeling ryokan - This ryokan did not even get close to par with other ryokans we have enjoyed in Japan. The ryokan is dated and dirty (probably due to wear and tear) and appeared pretty gross.
Front desk lady was confused and did not show the same politeness and service as we have experienced elsewhere.
Bath was dirty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Takayama ryokan in a central location - Lovely ryokan, great location in town, nice Japanese-style breakfast and a relaxing Sentō (public bath) in the ryokan. The futon mattress was on a mattress ensemble/base which made it really firm and uncomfortable to sleep on. Otherwise, a very comfortable stay.
- Mark (8/5): Delightfully Japanese. - Overnight stay in Takayama. Hotel within walking distance of the station. Outstandingly delicious and traditional Japanese breakfast.
- Retiree (10/5): Nice Hotel - We stayed only one night but we could cover the two morning markets. There is plenty to see as we walked around Hida Takayama.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Only good thing - Location near Takayama Station - This is, as its best, a budget hotel. Location is the only good thing of this 'ryokan'. The bed was comfortable and thats about it. The hot water and cold water do not mix when I tried taking shower. There was absolutely no way one can take a proper shower on that night. It was dreadful. I was in room 317 on the 3rd of January 2016.
- fung sim (8/5): Good lication - Spaciousness
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very nice family-owned ryokan in Takayama. Location is superb (near the station and in the main street where most restaurants are). Staff is really helpful but do not speak much English, however they will do everything they can to help you. Rooms are really nice an cozy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice and convenience, value for money! - It was a small hotel, but nice and quiet. The location was very convenience, it was closed to the JR Station. Breakfast was good too! The hotel condition was a bit old. In general, this is a nice place to stay, and the price was reasonable.
- Adam (6/5): OK - not a bad experience - v big room for Japan but but of a musty smell and definitely very dated.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great stay! - We enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend this ryokan. The staff is super friendly and helpful. It is in walking distance to the old part (Edo-period) of Takayama. The tatami room is very clean and spacious. The onsen is nice. The Japanese-style breakfast was also very good.
- Maria (10/5): Delicious Japanese Style Breakfast! - Absolutely delicious breakfast. Very traditional Japanese style Ryokan, walking distance from all attractions. Staff was very friendly, even though they had little English. Would definitely recommend for a real Japanese travel experience.
- CPH (6/5): - Simple ryokan, nice reasonable but somewhat worn down room and facilities. More a backpackers place with own room. The Onsen was simple and very small.
Simple local charm, do try to have dinner there!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Pretty Decent - The people were nice, and it is near the main part of the town. Everything was in decent in terms of comfortability. Just no internet in the rooms.
- Glenda (4/5): Disappointing, staff have no English at all. - Very small, old traditional hotel. Beds and pillows like bricks, heating in room comes on and off all night, very noisy with room temperature going hot and cold. Narrow staircase to floors, no lifts. In need of some maintenance. No jug available to make a cup of tea, thermos provided but cold by evening. Staff have no English language at all so extremely difficult to communicate.
- MAGGIE (8/5): A very pretty, conveniently located ryokan... - Stayed in a triple room with no private bathroom. Space was a bit limited with 3 suitcases. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful despite language barrier. Japanese breakfast was different but enjoyable - staff very helpful in explaining how to eat the various dishes. Ryokan itself was very pretty, especially since it had been snowing recently. Staying there was like a step back in time. Located an easy 5 minute walk from station and from old town area. Would recommend.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good service! - Hotel was very accommodating and very friendly. Good service and very personalised.
- Florence (8/5): Good location. 5 mins from Takayama Station. - Receptionist is able to communicate in Mandarin and English. But the other staffs can only communicate in Japanese but are helpful and friendly. Dinner are good but breakfast are simple. The room looks a bit old but are clean. Bed are comfortable. Overall are good.
