Guest Reviews
- diogo_cardao (10/5): Authentic - We made the reservation on the saturday morning, well I thought that I had made the reservation for that same night but for some reason it was for 2 weeks away.
We travelled to the unique Dutch authentic island of Marken.
We were very well received by the owners despite that we didn't had any reservation for that day, upsy :)
The hotel is very cosy and clean.
Breakfast was high quality food and service.
A place to return that's for sure.
- scout2017 (8/5): What a nice surprise! - The hotel is a bit of a walk (well sign posted) from the out of village parking area but once you step in - warmth and a super welcome from the owners. It is a pity we could only stay one night! Do check out the walks on the dikes: birds, water and views. A great alternative to an impersonal big city hotel.
- Geert76 (8/5): Super nice couple running a cosy hotel - We went on a weekend trip without kids for once. I selected a quiet place (Marken) and a small local hotel. From the moment we arrived until we left, we were spoiled by the couple running the hotel. Very nice breakfast, clean rooms, spontaneous advice on where to go and what to do, where to go out to eat, etc.
- DANDGFREEQUEEN (8/5): Stayed for one night - We were made very welcome on our arrival by the owner Sarah, Although the room we had was a little tired around the edges it was all very clean .Downstairs there was a nice lounge / bar area where a lovely breakfast was served too you in the morning and by night it became a nice place to relax in and enjoy a few drinks .It was very clear to us that sarah takes pride in all that she does, She couldn’t do enough for us making it a pleasant stay .
- marta_m1980 (10/5): Amazing - The hotel was one of the best places we've ever been too. If you expect spacious rooms, wide corridors, convinient stairs, you won't get it. What you get, however, is
the unique Dutch atmosphere of the place with its cosy sofas, warm decor and charming climate. I should also add- delicious breakfasts:)The most important thing of all are the people who run the place, absolutely lovely and helpful. I really recommend the place to anyone who is looking for something more than just a place to sleep.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was really nice, and will be even better with all the ideas the owner is going to implement. Super service and Sarah is a great host!
- w0stamper (10/5): Highlight of our trip to the Netherlands - Spent time in numerous spots in the Netherlands and then made our way to Marken. We only had the opportunity to book a single night at Hof van Marken and that's the only regret we have. The room was nice, the hosts were great, and the town is a nice quite place to visit. (Note that we went off-season in October.) We are planning to go back, this time for a longer stay. You won't be disappointed. Go for the breakfast served at the hotel. Very nice indeed and a great start to the day.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Imperdible - Increíble lugar. Sarah excelente manager. No se pierdan el desayuno.
Gracias!
- AlexM11863 (8/5): "Pleasant Surprise " - We booked in on a impulse because we thought Marken looked like a lovely small village with a huge history. The hospitality was awesome "Sarah & hubby "new owners of one month were very enthusiastic and we wish them well for the future because they are off to a great start.
- mipen2015 (10/5): Serenity with thanks to Sarah - Hof van Marken is a true haven away from the busyness of Amsterdam. It has old world charm combined with modern amenities and is only a very short walk to the picturesque harbour and four restaurants.
Our wonderful host Sarah made our three day stay extra special by organising amazing
outings and transportation to nearby attractions where we got to enjoy the natural beauty of the Netherlands. She created a worry-free experience so that our days in Marken became a highlight of our European vacation and we enjoyed the delicious breakfasts too.
- StenL_13 (10/5): Tremendously charming! - The whole of Marken is amazing - especially in the evening and and early morning when it is all silent and magical. The best way to experience this is to stay at the Hof van Marken. A small and tremendously charming hotel. Relaxed and homey atmosphere. The host was very welcoming and the breakfast was superb.
- ColinSomersetUK (10/5): GREAT PLACE FOR A QUIET RETREAT - We stayed at Hof Van Marken for a quiet three day break and were pleased with our choice. It's the only B&B in Marken, just up a side street from the harbour, about 35 minutes by the efficient half hourly 315 bus from Amsterdam Centraal. The hamlet is very pretty and peaceful, surrounded by farmland, and it takes just over 2 hours to walk the whole island by well-kept pathway. Our room (6) was small but adequate, with a window view over the roofs and lagoon; and the stairs to the rooms are steepish and not suitable for anyone with mobility problems although we managed OK (These factors were probably the same for most houses in Marken). The breakfasts at 10e were excellent value, although the hotel no longer offers evening meals presumably as most guests would want to eat on the harbourside (see my review of the excellent De Taanketel). The ferries to Volendam on the mainland are efficient, but Volendam itself couldn't be more of a contrast as it's tacky and unpleasantly touristy (avoid). Instead we passed through quickly, taking a bus to the lovely town of Edam which is worth a visit. Overall we had a very happy stay, and would thoroughly recommend this hotel and village for a short get away break that can easily be combined with daily trips to Amsterdam if need be. The hotel also has bikes for guests although we chose more leisurely walking.
- 301lisa33 (10/5): Fabulous - especially the breakfasts - Fabulous, but rather pricey. This hotel is in an old (large) converted Dutch property, set slightly back from the harbour. It is charming. Clean, comfortable with good space and nice views of roofscapes (or whatever). Note the bedroom walls are rather thin. Sadly, kettles are not provided in standard rooms. Breakfast is extra but is fabulous, fresh and generous. The owner very helpful
- Hanspeter (8/5): Gerne wieder - Sehr freundliche Gastgeber in einem touristischen, fast kitschigem und etwas überteuertem Dorf.
- Bill (10/5): - Cozy, comfortable and clean hotel. A little far from airport but it is still worth for a stay.
- Yushi (10/5): Lovely place to stay in Marken - This is our second time staying at this little hotel and it’s wonderful as it was two years ago. Highly recommended and we’ll definitely come back
- Mia (10/5): A gem ! - A charming hotel, lovely room with character and super nice host. Not to mention the fabulous breakfast ! Well situated for dog-walking too. Will definitely return!
- 141martynd (8/5): The Best of Breakfasts - Marken island was the half-way point of a 2 week cycle around The Netherlands. It was also a high-point: a fascinating place. The Hof van Marken turned out to be a splendid choice to spend the night. Friendly: an intriguing blend of timber and brick. We were comfortable, right in the roof-room. We needed the patron to move our gear up there. The staircase was steep even by dutch standards.
He gave us good advice later: what to see; where to eat (my review of the De Taanketel).
But most memorable was the breakfast. Fresh squeezed orange juice, just picked fruit (raspberries, strawberries, blue-berries, melon and so on); freshly made bread and croissants, strong ducth coffee - all delivered with enthusiasm. Certainly the best breakfast we ate on the holiday.
The bikes sped down the island causeway that morning, and on to the Waterlands and Amsterdam. We only needed a shared piece of apple-cake all day until dinner at 8 p.m. many kilometres south.
- LUDOVICO95 (8/5): central and cosy - the hotel is an ancient dutch house.
The room we got was very small but cosy. Two beds.
Don't expect luxury but traditional housing a bit like going back in time.
The stairs to get to the room is very steep and with heavy luggage, it can be a bit hard.
The hotel is very very central (although Marken is very small) by the harbour
We had breakfast. Very good breakfast but very expensive.
- tbirdman1969 (8/5): My romantic eve , Dutch style - This is a quaint little old hotel on the island of Marken . OF course it's old and the mattress is lumpy and their dining room isn't perfect but this is supposed to be a experience that won't ever forget . Marken is a very old Dutch fishing village with lots of quaint houses and friendly people. You might even go back to someone's house after dinner for a few beers and lots of great conversation plus make a long lasting friendship that can last a lifetime. And good sex too . YOU have to take a risk to get something back . The rooms in this old Dutch hotel will run you about $ 105 € Euro a night but what a night you will have spending a night on the island of Marken .The daytime it's has lots of eateries and shops to stroll around in . I want you to have some fun. Remember for every fun day you have it will make up for a dozen and more bad days .
- Inseadmike (10/5): Cute and romantic hotel - Amazing little place to stay on the little island. The hotel is just one street behind the main marina with the bars and restaurants, which is only 2 mins walk.
The public car park is 4 mins walk.
The stairs are narrow and pretty vertical but it's a part of the charm, we didn't have any problems with that. The room is decorated in nice light-blue and white colours with the touches of black. Small shower, hairdryer. The breakfast was nice: fresh local bakery products, cheese, ham, big bowl of fresh mixed berries, fresh orange juice, coffee.
Very welcoming and friendly owner.
The village itself is absolutely worth seeing and walking around.
I would definitely recommend this cute little place.
- jonke11 (10/5): A SUPERB PLACE TO STAY - We stayed here for 2 nights. The place is totally charming. Rooms comfortable and typically Dutch. Great helpful, and friendly service..wonderful breakfast each morning. In a perfect location. Looking forward to our return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely little hotel in a magnificent village - Long weekend exploring Amsterdam and North Holland by car. Check in was quick, room was clean, breakfast was delicious. I recommend this hotel as a great base for exploring if you're travelling by car, Marken was a wonderful, calm contrast to the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. Best of both worlds!
- LukasF539 (10/5): recharching on little Marken island - can only recommand that lovelely place.
make your own experience waking up on the pretty, small island - enjoying that calmness.
Guido takes care of his guests, giving good hints, advices and excellenet hospitality.
we will come back
for sure!!!
- silvia (8/5): ROMANTICISSIMO - HOTEL MOLTO ROMANTICO ,UNICO DELL'ISOLA .
- Lee (6/5): A pleasant stay - Nice clean hotel, ideal for seeing Marken
- Bardi78 (10/5): Unique Stay in an Old Fishing Village - We stayed for 1 night and were so pleased that we did. Marken is a peaceful old farming/fishing village which was once an island in the Ijsselmeer. It's now joined to the mainland by a man-made road which was spectacular to drive along. We parked our car in the islands dedicated car park and then walked with our bags for approx 5 minutes to the hotel. The village is charming and easily explored by foot and the architecture is so close together and a real sight to behold. Make sure you have the camera ready.
We were greeted by a friendly young lady in reception who showed us to our small, but character filled room with a great view which we reached after climbing very steep and narrow stairs. Fortunately, we were travelling light. The walls are quite thin and so some noise does carry but you dismiss this when you think about the age of the building and where you are. We had a wonderful dining experience in the restaurant (highly recommend) after a wander and drink at the village marina which is filled with 100+ year old yachts. Our breakfast was an additional charge but well worth it. We loved our stay.
- Ptak (8/5): Charming small hotel hotel in wonderful village - It's been our 4th visit in this hotel and we just love it. We've always spent 1 night here because the village is very small and there is not much to do unless you have a boat.
But the village has definitely its spirit.
The hotel is small but cosy with an excellent cuisine! :-)
The only reason why I'm not giving 5 points is that we've got a different room (without the seaview) than we've booked without any explanation. Little strange...
Despite this we love the place.
- Carrie (10/5): Hof Van Marken - well worth the visit - Quaint B&B experience. Wifi - perfect remote location but close enough to the city if you want that too. Wished I could have stayed longer and seen more of the area.
- yvakat (8/5): charming small and typical village - We chose this place for a 1 night stay on our way to Friesland, one of us already had been here and found the area quite charming. And indeed it is, the hotel is only one located on this small 'island' near Amsterdam and Volendam.
We had chosen the 'suite' (which is just a few € more than the luxury rooms), this one being on the top floor just under the roof (and having a bath), which was seen the exceptional warm weather no blessing, as the room had no a/c neither a fan, so we needed to sleep with all windows wide open (which we normally don't mind), but being in the middle of the small village it brought some nightly noise of the neighbours with it.. (also beware : the stairs to the room are quite steep and the steps are small)
You can easily rent a bicycle and drive around the island in a few hours, there is also a small harbour with some resto's around it.. We stayed for dinner in the hotel , they have a nice terrace next to their restaurant, and the chef brought some nice dishes on the table; breakfast was also served on the terrace. (parking is - at a daily fee - at the entrance of the village, which is about 200 m from the hotel)
Overall a short nice stay in this beautiful area, although due to the warm weather and non availability of a fan (and the nightly noise of the neighbours) we didn't have a good night..
- EVA (8/5): Great location - Marken is beautiful and a delight to visit. This hotel has a monopoly and offers good quality at a premium. Breakfast was excellent but pricey.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good hotel but miles away from Amsterdam - Good hotel but in the middle of nowhere if you're visiting Amsterdam. It's really a B&B with a restaurant. Very helpful landlady. Marken, where the hotel is, is a quaint little place on the coast. Looks like something from a fairytale story. If you're after a nice peaceful location you could do worse. If you want to commute to Amsterdam it's more than 40 minutes away by bus and 65 euros away by taxi. A good solution would be to stay here and hire a car.
