Guest Reviews
- Melanie (4/5): 20-30 years ago this would have been a fantastic stay. It feels very tired, rather than “old charm”. New owner perhaps f - Beautiful location, old charm and friendly/helpful new owner. Toilet hadn’t been cleaned. Seat left up with urine on rim and toilet seat. Pubic hair on bathroom table and hairs in sink. Hot shower tap handle fell off after turning shower on. Had no choice but to put hand/arm under scorching hot water to grab handle to switch off. No sound proofing, heard every sound from downstairs. Balcony doors weren’t sealed so let in very cold air and then with local burn-off’s and lingering smoke in the air, the room filled with smoke and it was very difficult to sleep/breathe with no escaping the strong smoke (burn-offs not the property’s fault, but proper sealing of doors would have helped enormously) and the beautiful pool shown in pictures is out of order until replacements made.
- Alison Fleming (6/5): Fantastic location and charm but service/communication lacking. - The atmosphere and the building were beautiful.
Clean comfortable rooms.
Nice breakfast Very poor/slow communication with staff
Over Half an hour between my husband receiving his main meal to mine
- Cherene (8/5): It felt like a scene from a book! - We loved the location and the amazing views from our room. The villa is beautifully designed and a pleasure to explore. The owner was very kind and we had a lovely evening swim in the pool. We very much enjoyed our stay. We didn't realise the process for after hours entry to the villa but that was a simple omission and was quickly sorted with a phone call.
- Walker (7/5): Warm, welcoming. We’ll be back. - Cosy, comfortable room. Well appointed & clean. Welcoming host & beautiful location. Liked the ‘guesthouse’ We are pretty relaxed about food but the cooking of the breakfast was not great, especially for the cost. The environment was lovely, the staff warm & classic menu good. Would love cooking to be refined for sake of lovely place, as it’s an amazing visit but we’re all a bit spoiled for good food these days.
- David (8/5): - Very cute property Location and setting
- Gerard Lane (10/5): Villa Howden is European luxury without the long haul flight - Stunning property in a gorgeous location. Our own little slice of Tuscany or provincial France. Akin to a lake Como residence you will feel a James Bond/ George Clooney vibe akin to living out a movie fantasy. Can’t recommend the hospitality and Phil’s attention to detail enough. A very special place worth the destination itself. Great place for a group or an event. Fantastic place for a wedding I imagine. Can’t wait to go back. The mosquito!
- GLS PTY LTD (10/5): I cannot wait to go back. Honestly, it was very lovely and peaceful and the staff were so sweet, - This place was such a beautiful little haven. It is definitely somewhere where you should stay for a while just so that you can properly take it all in. The manager informed us that they were in the process of making improvements. I didn't like that we had to leave after only one night.
- Wendy (9/5): Glad our daughter found this stay for us, it was the French treat we expected. - After staying in Hobart this was a pleasant surprise for a couple of nights. We loved the old character of the place. The staff were very helpful and we enjoyed breakfast and dinner for our stay. Rather dated but that adds to the character.
- GLS PTY LTD (10/5): - This place is absolutely magical and an absolute joy to stay at. We only stayed one night and we realised very quickly that we would love to come back and stay for much longer.
- Son (10/5): -
- Sonia (6/5): Was disappointed. - Beautiful location and building Carpets were dirty. Understaffed, they were busy running between the restaurant and reception. We had breakfast included and they ran out of eggs.
- Renee (8/5): A nice and quiet romantic stay. - Nice feel about it and very pretty. Only a little run down and wifi didn’t work in our room, but did in other areas of the building.
- Joshua (10/5): -
- Nita (10/5): -
- Anne (7/5): Very private ,quiet , perfect for quiet restful Break.Maggie was very accommodating - Maggie was wonderful Tried her best to make our stay enjoyable ! She was great !
Food was very good
Pool was very nice The room was not the room we expected
Poor WiFi
- Diego (9/5): - Villa Howden was the perfect romantic getaway, peaceful, beautifully styled, and full of charm. The staff were warm and welcoming, the views over the water were stunning, and the breakfast was a real highlight. A truly relaxing and memorable stay in Tasmania!
- Olivia (3/5): I desperately wanted to love it... but couldn't - We received an upgrade to our room and it was very spacious and nice. Staff were very friendly 'Restaurant' is fold-out trestle tables and wooden deck chairs
1 staff member in the whole hotel who was responsible for check in/out, food service, after hours duties, cleaning rooms etc.
In desperate need of a gardener - most hidden gardens around were full of weeds
Pool house severely in need of TLC - no cushions on lounge chairs, no towels, empty beer cans left.
The whole place is just tired and clearly run on an extremely tight budget
- Phillipa (7/5): A lot could be done to make this a five star hotel which it deserves - A lovely villa and well maintained - a touch of France attention to detail average as they are so short staffed
- Colin (2/5): Book somewhere else in Hobart. - Internet didn't work and the service was very poor. Most disappointing hotel on our Australia trip. Images are highly deceptive on what the property actually looks like. Avoid.
- Jennifer (10/5): -
- Jay (6/5): it was good but won't recommend to my friends, can do better with this budget. - The property was good and it was clean room.
it has good sunset and nice lookout to the back water and nature.
it has few nature elements to it. breakfast was not the best, it was not as expected it was just basic breakfast.
they charge you for coffee, egg or even bread butter.
after you paying premium price for breakfast included package
- M Johnstone (10/5): Golden age - This beautiful property has such an old world charm.
Huge, comfortable room and breakfast was included which was nice. Very picturesque grounds. Also has a heated indoor swimming pool. The shower-rose in room 4 was loose and keeps slipping. Steep stairs to access room.
- Bradley (7/5): -
- Asuka (7/5): -
- Adrian Inn Wai (10/5): - This is a hidden gem! The place is amazingly mesmerising. We were greeted by friendly receptionist and check-in is instant. Room is spacious and clean. Nil.
- Mimo (8/5): -
- Leanne (8/5): -
- Pamela (10/5): - Beautiful French style chateau with a large indoor warm swimming pool.
Plenty of rooms for relaxing highly recommended
- Harries (4/5): Disappointed - Beautiful room We booked this place because of the amenities aka- the pool as we wanted to relax and the restaurant. Paid extra for these things.
When we got there and asked about the pool we were told it wasn’t open that week. And the restaurant wasn’t open when we asked and gave notice.
Due to lack of communication with staff, and their understanding of English.
- Padraig (7/5): -
- Lembo (9/5): very pleasant - lovely grounds and location nought
- Raquel (4/5): Escueto - La ubicación La habitación, el desayuno justo y que tienes que pagar aparte el café
- Stephanie (9/5): Great getaway - The location and the vibe. Access to the restaurant at night.
- Jessie (6/5): It was okay - It was okay Facilities were a bit run down. Weeds everywhere. Staff were a bit weird. Location and view weren't as good as expected. Weird amounts showing on booking.com
- Carmen (6/5): Stay experience did not match the elegance of the accommodation - Opulent furnishing and sense of grandeur , fantastic location to stay the night before our trip to Bruny Island Breakfast extremely disappointing, fire not light in communal lounge
- Mel (5/5): - Room and building We returned for our 10 year wedding anniversary. Our room thr Tower suite was lovely as we remembered it. The food was unfortunately very average. It seemed quite apparent the reception staff ( there were only two employees one of which was on a four week working holiday) were also the waitresses and the cooks. We couldn’t even order a drink as they were in the kitchen during service. If you did want a wine they only have Chardonnay by the glass or Pinot noir so very limited wine menu. Staff did not speak English well and lacked experience. They tried but it was just disappointing. Grounds were also a little unkept for example the large terracotta pots on the main terrace were full of tall weeds. With the owner residing in Sydney, the place isn’t at its best these days.
- Sheehan (9/5): French Style Villa - Lovely french style building and decor. Breakfast was very good and good selection too. Staff were friendly and showed us to our room, library, and dining area. So pleased the heating was on in our room. TV reception and avaiable channels leave a lot to be desired, though. The shower head kept falling down into the wall.
- Nicki (7/5): Loved the charm - Location, price “& ambience Dated & a bit run down
- Eva (7/5): -
- Erin (9/5): A nice romantic couple get away. - Rooms were a good temperature
Bed was soft and comfy
Location was lovely
Wonderful staff member who seemed very overworked though.
Lovely place to relax
Pool was beautiful
Great view
Bit pricey but a nice greataway for our anniversary. TV very small and old
Random wet towel and bucket on bathroom floor when we arrived
Not enough milk, normally tea bags or coffee
Breakfast was delicious however it was rather cold when it was delivered
Had to pay extra $5 each for "real coffee" which was very small.
- Helen (10/5): -
- Clappo (9/5): An overnight villa stay. - The atmosphere of the place was lovely. Bed was big and comfy. Breakfast in the morning was a bit basic and average.
- Evelyn (9/5): -
- Rhonda (8/5): -
- Frida (10/5): - all good, most importantly! White wine is most be try, so nice.
- Qingwei (9/5): -
- colleen (10/5): Beautiful spot to spend time at. Friendly staff. - Amazing building and peaceful location. Nothing to dislike!
- Teja (10/5): -
- Nicola (9/5): little sanctuary of peace and luxury - The emoticon rating scales aren't working for me, but the location was beautiful, the staff were attentive and friendly, the breakfasts were great. I would recommend Villa Howden for a holiday retreat. We had a water leak from a bathroom fitting but the staff were already across it trying to fix it, so we carried on it that same room as it had such great views and it only leaked twice during our stay due to heavy rains.
- Maria (4/5): - The place was beautiful, great location, easy to find and close to the city. But I felt there wasn’t enough staff. Even though it was low season, I wasn’t welcomed at reception as I expected. The week before my stay I sent several emails and calls to book a table at the restaurant, but got no reply. Staff were always kind, but their English was very limited, so communication was hard and a bit frustrating. Overall, the place is lovely but the service and attention to guests was disappointing.
- Vittoria (3/5): So so disappointing with so much anticipation prior to area I h. - The property is so lovely however in need of some TLC
It’s such a shame that it seems to be on its way out.
I’m sure units heyday it was beautiful The 2 staff tried hard but were completely out of their depth.
No dinner for the second night
Breakfast cold
Flask coffee like camping
The Villa was freezing and we had to ask to have the fireplaces put on. The lively young lady tried but was not equipped to manage
The hotel is skating on its past
- Stiady (9/5): Beautiful house, beautiful bay - Antique house, beautiful premises Fixtures can be improved
- Terrell (10/5): -
- Eon (10/5): One of the Best - 너무 멋있는 저택 전혀 없습니다.
- Patty (10/5): -
- Jodie (8/5): A beautiful unique place but more suited for a group who would make use of the lovely common areas. In Winter with few g - Interior was certainly as lovely as we hoped and a unique experience Only a couple of guests and they put us below one of them, and the floors are noisy.
Breakfast area was amazing but food was average
- Silva (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gary (10/5): - Amazing venue not far from Hobart. Stayed 2 nights and as it was not very busy upgraded our room. Fireplace to have a drink beside and breakfast was good. Definitely worth a visit
- Shaleah (9/5): Superb -
- Bertone (10/5): The staff is very good, the best. They did understand some issues and they dida possible to sort that. - The style is beautiful Property needs a lot of maintenance
- Lynae (8/5): Very good -
- Yvonne (10/5): - Beautiful property, friendly staff, great breakfast.
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely location and gorgeous decorating. The room was well presented and had everything we needed. Breakfast was included and they even had gluten free bread available. The communal areas were also nice, especially the library with chess table, and the lounge area with fireplace. While I imagine the pool and outdoor area get far more use in summer, it was a cosy place to stay in winter. This was a minor inconvenience, but the heating in the room could have been better. Perhaps another space heater for winter stays?
- Kaydee (8/5): 8/10 would recommend. - The bed was so incredibly comfy - I slept so well. The staff (although we only saw one staff member our whole stay) was lovely!
We didn’t try the breakfast that was included but the food smelt great. The tv was extremely old - these need a serious update. The restaurant was closed despite it saying in the books in the room that it was open Wednesday-Sunday and the heater wasn’t enough for the room. We were quite cold all night.
- Davison (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deb (7/5): Good -
- Catherine (6/5): Tuscan retreat - Located in a tranquil setting with water views reminiscent of a Tuscan or Provencal French Villa. The staff were friendly and very helpful with any requests that we made. Breakfast was included in the tariff. Beds were comfortable, affording a restful night. The building needs some serious TLC - carpets soiled. walls in need of painting and in some areas repair.
Access to TV stations was limited, but this could be due to the location of the property. There was no evening dining options available onsite and as the property is a bit remote, we had to drive each night to the nearest towns in order to eat. While this wasn't a big issue, it would have been nice to be able to have dinner in the dining room on a couple of occasions and not have to go out in the cold weather.
- Ange (4/5): Disappointing - Breakfast was cold when served
Bacon was so thick it was inedible See above
Breakfast was awful
Room was lit up brightly due to outside lights and freezing cold when we arrived.
Couldn’t block out bright light all night
- Elizabeth (7/5): Beautiful villa with spacious room - Stunning property, like staying in a fairytale castle
We got a free upgrade to a sea view room
Super comfortable bed Was a little difficult communicating with the staff but they were lovely
Sometimes there was no one around to ask for assistance
- Ashley (6/5): Private, cosy and scenic stay outside Hobart. - Beautiful property with gorgeous interior and cosy rooms. The grounds outside could do with a spruce up. Just a little tidy and clean would go a long way.
- Mary (9/5): Superb - What's not to like. Great location, friendly staff, clean, comfortable room. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed for renovations, but our breakfast was still available, and was delicious.
- Suzanne (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (9/5): Wonderful hostess Tash looked after us. - Bed and linen were great. Spacious and stylish (French Provincial) Terrific breakfast TV a bit small. That’s about it.
- Justin (10/5): Beautiful stay - Had the tower suite and even though starting to get a fraction tired the size of the size and the views are incredible! Well furnished with very comfortable bed and great shower!
- Wendy (9/5): Had a lovely stay.thank you - Staff were extremely accommodating. Villa was clean and beautifully designed and decorated. Food was delicious but limited.
- Jay (10/5): - Good stay for us!
- Leslie (8/5): Very good -
- Kimberly (10/5): - Beautiful and had an amazing breakfast! What a great place to unwind and relax!!
- Allana (5/5): Passable -
- Joanne (8/5): Very nice, just please warm up the breakfast ! - The property is lovely and the staff were great.
The breakfast in the morning though always seem to be cold, which was a shame.
The quality of the ingredients was very good They also seem to take quite a long time to cook it considering it wasn’t that busy. !
They might consider offering a breakfast cereal or breakfast if it was easier…
Would certainly stay there again though
- Greg (9/5): Beautiful place internal and external setting, facilities excellent, staff wonderful - Beautiful place internal and external setting, facilities excellent, staff wonderful Nothing
- Anthony (10/5): We come back and back this property is absolutely exceptional. - We have now been to Villa Howden five times and keep on going back which is a wonderful testimony on its own. Staff are lovely property positively beautiful and close to Hobart, Bruny Island, the Tahune Airwalk, etc. etc. Nothing
- Glenn (6/5): Satisfactory - The cooked breakfast was cold
- Kelly (8/5): Very good - Beautiful place large bed and rooms We were there on Sunday and the restaurant was not open. And as the place wasn't near anything we had to find somewhere to go. Uber eats chinese and pizza are available
- Kate (9/5): Simply beautiful and charming place to stay. Highly recommend! - A magical place to stay! Beautiful building inside and out! A real little hidden escape; a slice of France in Tassie. Breakfast included as a bonus. A few things on the drinks/snacks menu they just didn’t have in stock.
- Simon (3/5): Bad bedding... - Staff were friendly. The bed was horrible i couldn't sleep in it. I had to leave.
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Lovely setting, beautiful rooms, pool was amazing. Bed was super comfortable. Lovely service and meals.
- Jacqueline (5/5): They is an unloved residence that is not worth staying at. If you have standards - then this is not the place for you! - The exterior building! This is not a luxury stay! Depending on your standards.. this is not good enough! The place is run down, neglected at every turn, under staffed, language was a barrier with certain staff, grooming and neat attire is recommended so is a course on customer service training. The breakfast took too long to serve. The list goes on and on.
- Patrick (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (9/5): Awesome - Breakfast was lovely, everything was wonderful especially pool, room and views Was fine but a Bigger bed would have been nice
- Risdiyanto (8/5): Very good -
- Tao (10/5): Exceptional -
- Donald (5/5): It’s a one and done. Would not return - It’s adequate, not outstanding, needs a good deep cleaning , and all carpets removed in bedrooms. We were sold an “apartment “ as we wanted as my wife is celiac. They gave us a room with a kettle. They did offer to have us cook in the sun room however. Outside of the hot plate there. Was NOTHING . Terribly uncomfortable situation. At over 200a night it was embarrassing. We ended up having the chef cook for us but not what we planned. See above bookings has to take responsibility for false advertising!
- Kelly (9/5): Superb - Stunning European style villa. Beautifully styled making you feel like you were in a French provincial hotel. Highly recommend a swim in the indoor heated pool. Mattress probably needed replacing but overall bedroom was lovely.
- Eryl (10/5): A special place to treat yourselves - Breakfast was excellent, ordered off menu.
Location wonderful, not too far from Hobart but down towards Kettering/Bruny
Pool a great asset.
The building and furnishings were wonderful, unique Outside grounds could be kept a bit neater. Courtyard needed sweeping.
- Настя (9/5): Superb - The overall feeling, the authenticity of the place, the style and the most friendly stuff you could ask for. Also, the food was great and I love the surroundings Wi-Fi is really bad, so if you plan to work or need a stable connection, I would consider a different place
- Heidi (8/5): Luxurious but dated - Big rooms, brekky, location Slow service at breakfast which improved the following day.
Gardens needed tending
- Enrique (8/5): Beautiful place - The place is very pretty and the room was very spacious. Two fonthe people we dealt with were very helpful and friendlym -Outdated appliances. Common areas could be a bit cleaner.
- it is about 17 min from the hotel to Hobart CBD
