Guest Reviews
- Greenwell (8/5): - Right on one of the best reef breaks in Costa Rica. Ant infestation but it's the jungle so is to be expected . Bring borax or ant killer but overall, great value and wildlife abundant.
- Alvarez (4/5): -
- Olivier (7/5): -
- Megan (9/5): Excellent stay! Right on the beach. Chill spot we’d love to return to! - Loved the proximity to the beach, pool was excellent and restaurant offered wonderful meals. Nice rooms for our family. Loved this spot! Super relaxing vibes! Quite a few bugs the first night (ants), but we took care of that prior to sleeping.
Warm at night (no ac) but we were aware of this and appreciated the good price and knew there were more expensive rooms available with WiFi.
- Cowan (10/5): - Beautiful place. The rooms, restaurant, beach were amazing. Great food every meal. No ac in the bungalow I booked. They do have several with ac so I would recommend those.
- Maria (8/5): -
- Hall (10/5): Great location, great staff - The best location
Room was so quiet Nothing
- Kalt (7/5): -
- Lydia (10/5): Magical | Relaxation | inspiring | embracing - Such a special place. Not super fancy, but wonderful vibe! Beautiful people with great attitudes. This is a hidden gem! I loved everything!
- Thomas (9/5): -
- Gaelle (6/5): No Overnight Staff and Uncontrolled Noise Made It Impossible to Sleep, but amazing location - Amazing location by the ocean The stay was very disappointing due to excessive noise. Other guests were partying loudly in the pool throughout the night, making it impossible to sleep. There was no staff available overnight to address the situation, so the disturbance could not be managed. The lack of supervision and enforcement of quiet hours significantly affected our comfort and overall experience.
- Kenneth (9/5): Gringo go😂 - We want it to are self. All the relaxation.
- Finkelstein (6/5): Best and closest option for surfing playa negra. Best at high tide - Perfect surfers hotel. Simple but good restaurant right on the surf break . The surf shop could use some better boards. But certainly adequate !
- Tina (10/5): -
- Anné (10/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): I’ll be back again. - If you like vacations on cruise ships and tour buses don’t go to Hotel Playa Negra, but if you don’t mind traveling the bumpy dirt road less traveled to get to beaches that are barely occupied with super chill world travelers and want to interact with the nicest staff then you should go. The pictures on the website are accurate. I didn’t like leaving.
- Oliver (9/5): -
- Wagner (10/5): -
- marcelo (1/5): -
- Laurent (9/5): -
- zohar (10/5): -
- Katie (10/5): - We loved the location and the staff was so nice and helpful! We also liked that it wasn't super crowded. The bed was not the most comfortable.
- Aiste (8/5): -
- Lauren (10/5): Would recommend, awesome location, special place!! Will be back - Food! Beach! Surf! Cats! Monkeys, the people! Some Loud neighbors but all other neighbors were great!
- Linda (10/5): - Excellent and plentiful Nothing
- laurence (9/5): -
- Pantelis (7/5): - Fantastic location and the huts are spacious and unique. The hammocks were a cool addition. Surprisingly, there was no hairdryer in our room - for the price I would consider this a necessity.
- Andreas (10/5): -
- Eduardo Silva (3/5): - The location and beach are nice. The food in the restaurant is good. There was no proper welcome reception or guided orientation to the rooms and facilities, which led to confusion and difficulty finding our way upon arrival. The rooms did not provide drinking water, and some areas were noticeably dusty. Overall, the room felt rundown and in need of maintenance.
In addition, there was no effective insect control or natural repellent available; the room had a significant presence of insects and mosquitoes, and this was where we experienced the most bites during our entire trip.
Considering the overall condition and lack of amenities, the price charged feels disproportionately high. Don't understand why the raiting for the hotel is this high.
- Lynnet (10/5): Excellent location lovely rooms - Location Location! The food at the restaurant was not that good
- Willis (8/5): -
- Marcelo (10/5): If you like surfing this is a your version of paradise, if you only like chilling on the beach, then - The location is just perfect, I could hear the waves from my bed.
If you like surfing this is a your version of paradise, if you only like chilling on the beach, then this is your version of paradise as well nothing to complain from my end
- Rafaela (9/5): -
- Eduardo (10/5): In the beach all day! - Ocean front. Like a house beach - cozy and salty! It is mostly a surf hotel, so having a surfboard rack outside the bungalow would be nice. This is not a must have, but just a suggestion
- Jennifer (10/5): - great food, great place maybe a bit aged, could us some update
Achei a estrutura bem básica.
- Carina (9/5): -
- land (10/5): TEQUILA THE CAT!!! 🐈 - The staff was amazing and very helpful! The place was excellent, very clean and insanely beautiful!! I would also want ti point out that the best part of my stay was the cat Tequila! She is amazing, very good, caring cat and the hotel takes very good care of her, thank you for that!! Nothing!
- Lisa (10/5): Great place for beach vacation! - Very close to the beach, excellent restaurant and bar on site, nice pool area. The massage was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The roads near Playa Negra are horrible. Rent a vehicle with good ground clearance and good suspension. I was literally shaken around regardless of the speed.
- Pidal (7/5): Perfect location, old facilities - Location Very old, needs investment for the location it’s in. It’s stuck in time
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthias (10/5): Great oasis for a family without worrying about anything - Beautifully located at the beach, kids could choose between beach and pool. Food at the restaurant was great, staff really nice in particular to our children. Facilities common areas could be maintained a bit better but overall still nice. We also enjoyed the yoga area… Pool and Garden May require more maintenance
- Tomas (9/5): Superb -
- Christian (9/5): Superb -
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Kirsty (9/5): Beautiful location - Beautiful location, right on the beach, lovely pool and great food in resturant. Very cute huts, clean and comfortable. We loved our stay here, listening to the ocean.
- Maggie (10/5): - My family loved our stay. It was beautiful staff was very friendly.
- Shawn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christian (10/5): Paradise! - The place, the beach and the personnel.
- Zuzana (10/5): Amazing stay - The hotel has great location, right at the beach, surrounded by the palm trees and well looked after garden. We felt immediately disconnected. Ideal for people who search for some quiet time.
There is nice restaurant with a beach view and pool.
We enjoyed our stay so much.
Hotel stuff are very friendly and looked after us really well.
We would stay here again. There is really nothing what we didn’t like .
- Laurie (8/5): - Beautiful location. Rooms were very clean. Most of the staff were really nice.
- KHK1964 (10/5): Breakfast is Amazing - then hit the beach! - Even on a cloudy day, the service, food and views at Hotel and Villas Playa Negra are all great!
Friendly, efficient staff and really fresh food — both had bold coffee, breakfast burritos and FRESH FRUIT!!!
We love this place and will be back soon — HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
- Margaret (8/5): A special place - A small space with two lounge chairs served as the patio but no table inside or out. Internet service was intermittent in the cabin and at the pool and unavailable in the restaurant. Great sunset and ocean views from the restaurant.
- Tracy (10/5): - The most beautiful place on earth. Evening sunsets from the palapa are a dream come true.
- Marina (10/5): Colors in the sky, ocean views and sounds to remember - This is the only beachfront hotel in the area. It has a yoga deck where you can take class 3 times per week. Its restaurant area is the place where guests and local surfers gather since very early morning to go surfing or see the sunset, grab a drink and chat. What makes Playa Negra so special is the chilled vibe and its people. I do believe beauty and nature have an effect on people’s mindset and overall feeling. Here you see the kind of people who contemplate and appreciate nature, walks on the beach, perhaps even picking up plastics if the tide has brought any. Surfing and watching their acquaintances surf is the main activity.
You’d see foreigners that have moved to Playa Negra from USA or Europe or are regular visitors plus Ticos who have moved there from inland Costa Rica to surf, surf, surf, surf and work.
Unpaved roads seem to set a demographic filter. Whoever makes the effort to drive through rough dirt roads to get to these beautiful places might not be the average loud obnoxious tourists you’d typically find as long as there is asphalt, many shops, big hotels and noise. That type of human I did not see in Playa Negra.
I got a great outdoor massage during my stay at the hotel. Food was good. Staff is very friendly and attentive.
I experienced the three different types of accommodations the hotel offers. The cabin with shared kitchen was my favourite. I recommend the cabins with AC. Even if you don’t use it as much it is good to have if it gets very hot and humid all of the sudden.
- Michael (10/5): If you want to be ON the beautiful beach, this is your place! - We stayed in the non AC bungalows and were so close to the pool, restaurant and ocean. They were perfect.
- Folly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeffrey (9/5): Superb - Great place to stay Bad WiFi
- Bonita (10/5): - We first visited Playa Negra in 1999. We are so pleased to say that nothing has changed! We love the rustic feel of the Round thatched roof cabins and how close they are to the beach. The rooms while simple and rustic were maculate and the linens crispy and fresh. We heart Playa Negra hotel! Thanks for keeping Playa Negra the same.
- Julia (10/5): - Stayed at Playa negra hotel for a week. Overall a very magic place! I loved the privacy and location! The beach was gorgeous and not crowded. The restaurant on site was tasty and has amazing views! The rooms are commfy, a little rustic which doesn't bother me at all but they are kind of fancy cabins. Bugs will be inside lol. Luckily none were biting. The AC was essential for us. The rooms all have nice bathrooms but also have their own outdoor shower. It was so charming and relaxing! The beach also has good surfing for advanced or beginners a little walk south! I would definitely stay here again!
- Dominik (5/5): We liked the location and the people but didn’t feel safe. Hygiene needs to improve in the rooms. - Location, design and restaurant (especially the staff) was great. Facilities are dated and need renovation. Smell of feces in the room, Big openings so insects and even a snake entered the room.
- Tyler (10/5): Amazing! - We loved Hotel Playa Negra! It is a dream location for surfers with family. The thing that made the experience the most memorable was the service from the staff. We left feeling like we were leaving behind some new family members. Pura Vida Marlon, Darwin, Mary, Sylvia, Dorian, Dustin! Love you guys!
- Emily (10/5): - An amazing tranquil spot to relax and unwind. Simple, yet beautiful. The staff was very helpful, the food at the restaurant food fresh and delicious. The beach is a great spot to hang out and either surf, boogie board, or bob around in the waves.
- Michiko (10/5): Wonderful stay beachside on Playa Negra. Perfect little escape! - Beautiful property right on the beach. Perfect location to unwind and relax. Beautiful pool and amazing beach. Excellent restaurant poolside & beachside. Rooms were a bit dark and could use better lighting.
- Hugo (10/5): - The location is the best. The place is a beach front hotel very close to other restaurants as well.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was good. We basically had the place to ourselves as the rest of the cabinas and restaurant were undergoing renovations, so it was a trade off. We were there for the location right on the beach at Playa Negra and ease of access for surfing. Enjoyed watching the waves from the pool. The one thing was that there were more bugs in the room than I remembered last time I stayed there, but you’re in the jungle so… seems like the renovations are sealing up the rooms tighter and we did see someone treating the perimeter of the rooms and didn’t see bugs after that.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Awesome place to stay, but between September and November the cafe, restaurant and surf shop are closed. Make sure to hire a car!
- Shelley (10/5): - This place was beautiful, we woke up to birds singing in the morning, howler monkeys on a tree close by, wonderful relaxing place to stay.
- Deanna (10/5): The surfing was great and we loved the land and animals inhabiting the area. - Beautiful, clean and close to the beach and cafes. NA
- Thomaz (10/5): A truly magical place - The hotel is great, beautiful, super location, lovely swimming pool, truly amazing staff! Rooms were large and cozy, but it can get a bit challenging to manage the heat without the air conditioning (during the day - evenings were fine)
- HDMCHARTERS (10/5): Amazing beach view! - This is an awesome beach front hotel. It has great style with cool rancho designed rooms. Big swimming pool, on site yoga, beachfront restaurant and bar. Its very laid back with a stunning beach. Perfect place to relax and soak in the coast.
- Brainerd N (10/5): - Great peaceful room with lots of wildlife. Great service at the restaurant. Amazing location for a getaway to surf or do yoga. Far from night life and tours, but we really enjoyed our stay.
- Ash (8/5): Great for beach access - Great location for access to the beach, the pool is nice and the cocktails at happy hour were good. Check in was easy and efficient. The cabins were very nice but quite hard to keep biting insects out of. Probably the place in Costa Rica I was bitten the most.
- Gorrow (8/5): Really great place to stay. Accommodation is simple but that is part of the charm. - Location is amazing. Right on the beach. Big pool and restaurant at your doorstep.
- Brice (9/5): Superb -
- Leah (10/5): Absolutely the perfect getaway…whether traveling alone or with a group. - Location was perfectly located on beach …prime location for surfers or anyone wanting to be on the ocean. Restaurant food was delicious and service was wonderful. Authentic Costa Rican food and other classics too There are no local ATMs (45 mins away) and cannot tip on credit card for restaurant. Cash tips only and cash for extra activities too. Keep in mind. Bring more money than credit.
- Leah (6/5): - This is a great, secluded spot with beachfront access, an on-site restaurant and bar, and a surf shop with rental snorkel, boogie boarding and surfing equipment. There are flowering bushes that smell wonderful and their fragrance is delightfully strong. The hammocks and yoga room overlooking the beach were special too. I’m vegetarian and was also pleased to find a number of items on the breakfast and all day menus I could enjoy. The cabins were clean and they were cleaned daily. You won’t find air conditioning but the ocean breeze, screened windows, tropical shutters and overhead fan were sufficient for me. It’s rustic and simple, but thoughtfully designed and all my needs were met.
NOTE: I stayed in one of the original 10 cabins. There are newer ones on site with some upgrades (not sure what) that are listed as suites on the hotel website.
The downsides? The second half of my stay, I was plucking hundreds of no-see-ums off of my bed each day, and dodging moths, beetles, caterpillars, geckos and a roach inside my cabin. It wasn’t a lack of hygiene or cleaning: the gaps around the door make it impossible to keep critters out. I’m not sure what more could be done, other than hanging mosquito nets around the bed. My only other complaint is that the smell from the septic system would waft every so often near the pool and my cabin.
If you’re looking for a self-contained, peaceful space for a chill solo or a family trip, this property is great.
- Alysse (10/5): Exceptional - The property was very relaxing! Was beautiful and could hear and see howler monkeys on property! a true gem! There was confusion about whether breakfast was complimentary.
- Bost (8/5): Very good - location on the beach
- kassakr (8/5): The Surfiest of Scenes - If you surf, you already know about this spot. Its very famous and people come here from around the world. Our visit was super chill and we took amazing hammock naps! We arrived early in the week when it was quiet. They place filled up for the weekend. We had some really loud 'surf bros' next door that we had to tune out. We'd just try to ficus on the monkeys that were cruising around! Sometimes, we couldn't tell the difference? lol
The restaurant is just "okay". When we were there, it was the only place open sometimes, so it was expensive and the food is mediocre. Its a great place to chill and watch the waves. We opted to eat in town when other spots were open.
The best part of our stay was that we had a kitty named "Tequila" who slept with us every night! I know that sounds silly, but it really made our stay special. The round cabin was so comfy and beautiful. We got a room with A/C and fridge, but didn't really need the A/C during rainy season.
Also: The beach right out front has gnarly surf. If you want to swim, go to the left where there's a nice sandy bottom.
- David (7/5): Good - Lawn unkepted, no pool towels no shade over sun beds
- Salas (8/5): Very good -
- JACOBUS (10/5): - Overall setting.
- Angela (10/5): - Love the daily yoga and surf lessons. The staff was great and we enjoyed breakfast a lot. I read that breakfast was free but we ended up having to pay so I'm not sure what that was about. The smoothies are fantastic and perfect for a hot day. The only negative was the drain in our bathroom had a bad sewage smell coming from it. Other than that, we loved our stay. Thank you!
- Manuel (9/5): Superb -
- Thierry (9/5): Superb -
- 43yvonneb (2/5): Happy Hour Rip Off - While we cannot comment on the quality of the hotel since we did not stay there, we feel compelled to warn people of the happy hour offer at the bar.
When we ordered we made it clear that we we were going to take advantage of the happy hour offer and one couple wanted margaritas, the other cuba libres. Instead of bringing us 4 drinks, the waiter came back with 8, 2 drinks per person. We told him that this was not consistent with our order, but he just shrugged his shoulders, pretended not to understand, and refused to return the extra drinks. So instead of $24 we ended up with a bill of $48 for drinks we did not want.
In the end we did pay for all drinks but our of 3 fantastic weeks in Costa Rica and wonderful friendly people, this was the one place we will definitely never return to.
- Gary (8/5): we had a lot of fun and great beach time at this property. - close to beach
peaceful location
restaurant on site
easy access to get there needs better chairs ( in rooms, restaurant and in our room)
- Dawna (9/5): Superb -
- Carmelo (6/5): Pleasant -
- Companion54883831041 (10/5): Absolutely Incredible experience - My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights and absolutely loved it. The food, service and suite were incredible. What really made it a great experience for us, were the people that work there and the host Pasquale. I cannot say enough about them. The beach is literally a 5-10 min walk from hotel. The room was spacious and very comfortable. I highly recommend the suite. The restaurant food and service was amazing…you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend this place. We will be back for sure. Thank you Cafe Negra & a special thank you to Pasquale…you are the man…for all you did for us! Trish & John
