Guest Reviews
- Chamu (10/5): - Very close to Yunessan. The hotel also has its own public bath. A bit of a vintage location with very friendly staff that are very accommodating to foreigners as well.
- RHIAN (10/5): - Whilst this is definitly an older property, the room size and the mountain views are the real winner. Everythings was great....breakfast was exceptional
- Tushar (10/5): - Brilliant place. Would highly recommend
- Gissel (4/5): - I recently stayed at this hotel. It’s very old looking, it definitely needs upgrades. It’s also an onsen which is not mentioned and I found out through a review left by someone else. They charge an extra $6 for it regardless if you use it or not. It’s very far from the main town. The staff is not very forthcoming with hotel information, you have to ask.
They have a restaurant in the hotel but you have to book 3 days in advance! Again this information was not provided to us. We were told when we tried to go for dinner around 5:30ish.
And because this is far from civilization we had to go to the nearest Konbini and take a bus. Well the bus stops running around 620 pm. We had to walk back in the dark.
The restaurant was not full, they could have easily taken us in but refused.
For breakfast again we had to make reservations, they did not provide us with hours of operation (and I forgot to ask) we missed breakfast. But you know what they didn’t forget? To charge us for the reservation and I asked them to remove it as we never used it. They did. The customer service was lacking. I would not recommend. Get a hotel closer to town. Hakone has pockets of neighborhoods.
- YUKIE (10/5): - Very quiet and so relaxing.
- Cassandra (10/5): - The head staff at this hotel were amazing. I made an error in the fine print of my booking and the staff went above and beyond to help me find a solution. The suite was quite big. The views were inspiring. We will return here in the future.
- Tess (6/5): - View was great. Didn’t know there was an onsen until we got there. However, there is a tax for the onsen that they didn’t tell us about until we checked out and you had to pay in cash. Dated hotel but worked for what we needed.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Pleasant if dated hotel - Starting with the good: Great value hotel with lots of facilities. Room was quiet, spacious, and clean, and came with a fantasic view. The gym was well-equipped. I did not use the onsen or pool so cannot comment.
The bad: it's a very dated hotel, whilst the room itself was pleasant, the en-suite bathroom and kitchenette were old. Really old; very tired with age-related decay setting in (think peeling laminate from chipboard furniture, UV-tainted plastics, etc). I'd have a guess and say they were original fixtures from when the hotel was built.
Overall though it was comfortable and I got a few really serene nights sleep. The location was good as well, close to a couple of Family Marts and walkable into Gora, albeit up and down some really steep, unlit roads that were sketchy to walk at night. A car in Hakone really is nessecary regardless of where you stay.
- Isabel Leonor (6/5): -
(8/5): - Fine good Room size,Double bed and sofa.
- Andrew (6/5): - The place was fine, it's an older hotel with a lot of families staying there when I was there. The main issue was probably more with Expedia, not sure, I reserved a non-smoking room and they didn't have any so I got put in a smoking room. Kind of rough if you are a non-smoker, gave me a sore throat. The desk person said when you chose non-smoking it's only a preference not a guarantee. That's a bad policy.
- Kwok (10/5): allover it is good - We have a good stay
- Christopher (2/5): - Blood on quilts, urine stains on futons. Rooms reaked of cigarettes. Most staff were unhelpful, the second manager we spoke with tried to help, but we had already booked pther accommodations.
- Lydia (6/5): - I like the room size, that they explain how to operate the heater. They have a mini arcade there, swimming pool, gym.
But, the heater stopped after some time while we were sleeping so we didnt sleep well due to the cold. I wasn't aware there was timer?
The hot water flask/kettle is so small.
The hand soap are bubbles/no soap. We end up using the bath soap to wash our hands.
And so suprisingly, there was no bottled water given in the room.
Please note their massage room, washing machine are dryer are chargable. You need to purchase a capsule pod (its not given/auto in the machine)
The good thing is as its very far, the shuttle bus picked us up first before going to the other hotels. It is really far from bus stop or station. I disagree that its only 17 mins walk from hakone air museum. It is not.
- Nguyen (6/5): - Nice
- Glenn (2/5): - Pictures were looking nice on Expedia. However we got assigned a room on the first floor. The hallway and the room smelled moldy. The bed wasn’t comfortable and the WiFi didn’t work. After checkout, they first wanted to charge us double the price while we already paid the full amount through Expedia. After arguing they finally agreed it was alright. We still had to pay 600¥ for usage of the onsen. I don’t recommend this hotel to anyone.
- Danica (10/5): - Loved the onsen and fitness room area, large spacious room and comfy traditional outfits to wear around. As mentioned in other reviews, don’t expect to eat without a reservation made days in advance— however there are a few options at Yannusen next door ( 5 min walk). Laundry wouldn’t dry in the dryer at all after 2 hrs, best to hang it up! Overall we enjoyed our stay.
- Stephanie (10/5): - Angenehm ruhige Lage, großes Zimmer mit Balkon. Freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal.
- Shoko (8/5): - Very good!
- Doris Marcela (8/5): - The room was really spacious and provided us the option of having western and Japanese style room and we really liked it. We didn’t use the facilities because of lack of time but the hotel has pool and public baths. Location wise the hotel is a 10min walking from the bus stop (Hakone free pass) or 4 mins walking from the other bus line in Hakone. There aren’t many restaurants around so plan ahead as the only ones around closed around 8pm.
- Alexandre (4/5): - We stayed (a family of 4) one night to visit Hakone
The hotel is very out dated, bed very uncomfortable, no dining options (which usually is not a big issue for us, but the resort is very secluded and hard to get to, so that was very frustrating when we finally got there and didn’t have any options to eat. Luckily Yunessun is a 5 min walk and there was still one restaurant open at that time). The onsen offers get great bathing options but needs a serious scrub and cleaning (probably hasn’t been done in a long time)
The staff was very Friendly and helpful, and we had a great view from our room
In summary probably some better options to stay in Hakone
- Diana (10/5): - the room is really huge
- Michael (2/5): Wish Wisterian - Wifi non existent. Secret shuttle service.
No food available.
No water in room.
- YISHAN (10/5): - I would like to say that the attitude of the front desk staff is really good and their helpfulness made my trip better, the room is also very good among hotels in the same price range
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- PAUL (10/5): Great place spend time - I
I loved this place and would go there again.
- vincent (4/5): Decu - Personnel désagréable
Wifi ne marche pas dans la chambre
Check out 10h
- Andrei (6/5): - If you want a room with internet, find yourself another hotel, because stuff will be saying sorry and do nothing about it. I was spending time in the lobby doing my internet business instead of resting on my bed. There is nothing to eat around unless you booked your dinner 3 days ahead. We were eating food from the conbini. Other food restaurants are around 30 minutes away by foot and accepting only cash. Area is mountainous so you will be climbing the hills. Rooms are cute, in Japanese style, but convenience is a bit off. Overall I would not recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- jian (8/5): Hotel name in English need be written at entrance - there are two brown color wood boards at corner of entrance, hotel name in Japanese has been written on the top board, there is no any word or hotel name on second wood
I suggest : write hotel name in English on the second wood board because it is difficult to find hotel entrance. Plus language barrier, so it cause more difficulty to find hotel. Please write a English hotel name on the second wood board!!!
- TungShuen (10/5): - they accommodate us really well and provide additional assistance when my father has disability of getting around. Location is perfect too.
- Cory (10/5): - Staff was fantastic
- Eric (8/5): - I was traveling with my wife and two adult daughters. We had a family suite, with a main bedroom separated by a sliding-door screen from a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats, futon, and balcony. My daughters loved sleeping in the traditional room. The reception desk staff was very kind and accommodating, though we had some communication difficulties. We enjoyed the hotel's indoor onsen and proximity to the Hakone Outdoor Museum. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. The lobby and corridors are a bit plain and dark.
- Robyn (8/5): - More English signs and speakers. Restaurant needs more dining options. Mt Fuji ropeway cable ride is convenient and easy to access by local bus
- Chezarae (8/5): - Hotel felt very old and dated. The location was surrounded by mountains which was very peaceful. The staff was super helpful. The room instructions for the water heater were tricky to understand at first.
- Atila (6/5): - Room smelt like wet dog. Was charged at check out for a gym and facilities fee even though we didn’t use facility. And this was after we pre paid for the room
- Randy (8/5): - It is an old hotel but the staffs are very nice and helpful. We did not know there was a shuttle bus went to the hotel but the time was limited. We took the public bus with our luggages & walked on the narrow road. It was unsafe to walk on the narrow road with cars & buses passed by.
- Verified traveler (6/5): A step back in time - The woman who checked us in was the only impolite person we met during two weeks traveling in Japan. We took trains and a bus to this isolated hotel and upon arrival asked about getting dinner reservations. "No." That was all she said. Nothing about other options except to direct us to the water park, where the restaurants were mostly closed. We ate at a fast food place in the arcade. We also asked about getting breakfast the next day and got the same negative response with no alternatives. We did get breakfast on our third day and the dining room and service were lovely, but I wish that our first impression and had not been so negative. This is a strange hotel that was probably an upscale resort when it opened decades earlier. Lots of signs of aging and lack of maintenance. The room was still charming and large, with a separate tatami room overlooking the mountains. I would not recommend staying here if taking public transportation. Also, the water park looked pitiful and is not a place to go.
- Fang Yu (8/5): - The place is a mix of western and Japanese style, it’s nice!
- Laura (8/5): - What a nice retreat! We truly enjoyed this traditional hotel nestled in the mountains. Our room had an excellent view, and it was so peaceful, quiet, and private. We loved sleeping on the futon in the tatami room. Also, the bath/shower room was a treat. There is an on-site onsen which we used every day of the stay. This hotel is a bit far from amenities, and at the time of our stay, the restaurant was closed. We recommend walking the 5 minutes on the path to Yunnesun, where there is a ‘Family Mart’ for basic foodstuffs. Yunnesun, is an amazing experience and highly recommended. Take the shuttle bus from Gora Station to the hotel - it hits every major hotel, including this one, even though it’s not listed on the route. It begins late and ends early, so the Tozan bus works with the Hakone Free Pass (note that the bus instructions on the hotel website are for the local bus, which is not covered by the Hakone Free Pass). The place is in need of a bit of a decor update, but otherwise spotlessly clean. The staff don’t speak much English, but are very willing to help and are exceptionally polite. We felt welcome and would gladly stay here again.
- Jose (8/5): - Staff was friendly and helpful, great hotel but no room WiFi
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The room had all the time very bad odor coming from the toilet and never disappeared
- Kkelly (8/5): - Very nice surroundings, pool and onsen. Not very easy to access and not near other eating placed.
- Duncan (6/5): - lovely area, hotel very hard to find via public transport. We were late checking in (and a day early) restaurant was fully booked and there were no other food options within walking distance. No room wifi.
- Ed (10/5): Enjoying a nice hot bath in the mountain - the staff was real helpful and was able to help me find some places to eat and activities to do in the area. the view was amazing and i would definitely stay here again. The pool they have was long enough for me to swim a few laps before heading up to the Onsen. The onsen itself is worth the stay. Definitely one of the stays i had during my 3 week trip through japan
- Julia (4/5): A total rip-off. - For JPY 30,000 a night I expected A LOT more than what I got. This price did not include breakfast nor did it include entry into Yunessun, the water park nearby, even though the hotel website had pictures of the water park in its advertising. I actually went here thinking it was part of the hotel complex. I did actually have second thoughts about staying there due to the price and almost cancelled, then I looked at the website again and thought that the park would be fun for the family. Egregious false advertising.
When I did ask about breakfast, not only did they want to charge me per adult, they also told me I'd have to pay that amount ($15) for a three-year old child! Not even a child discount! Unbelievable.
The building itself is tired and dated - charging that much a night you'd think they'd make an effort to modernise the common areas - the hallways were dark and dirty and the walls was covered in paint chips.
Don't stay here unless you pay less that half of what I did. Absolutely not worth it.
- Michele (8/5): All good except getting there the last mile - Finally a room big enough for 2 persons.
Only issue a bit difficult to find. That last mile on a hill was not straight forward.
Go to gora ststion get the shuttle next to the station.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable Japanese style (little English) - This hotel is a bit harder to get to than it should be. The area promotes tourism with a “Free Pass” for busses, rail, cable cars and a tour boat that is not free but very reasonable and allows full use of the transportation. We arrived “near” the hotel on the H bus, but directions after that were scant. While evaluating our next step, the hotel bus just happened to stop at the opposite corner for a red light and we hopped on. It was not a scheduled stop, but with typical Japanese courtesy we were allowed to board. Later we found out that we could easily get the shuttle from Gora rail station.
Walking is a must in this hilly town. Be aware that many restaurants close early even at the central rail station.
Speaking and reading Japanese is highly recommended to get directions or to use the multiple remote controls in the room. Even though my wife was proficient we still googled translations for the heat and A/C controllers. Some Japanese shopowners used and recommended a translation app, Voicetra, that worked well.
Overall, nice small town with GREAT view of Mount Fuji from the cable cars over the mountain.
- David (10/5): Trekking in Hakone - Best to take Taxi there from train station. Get a multi day Hakone pass for days you plan to stay except for the first day (unless you arrive early morning). Use the baggage delivery service at the train station if you arrive in the morning. We used it from the hotel as we spent the last day still touring around and did not want to worry about baggage. We only partook in the breakfast buffet every day which worked out great. It is more of standard Japanese fair. Great walking trails around the area. We ate every evening at Aunty Pasta (follow the green awning). We walked to the Hakone open air museum from the hotel. We had a fantastic time and would stay there again. We did use the futons provided to place on beds as we are used to softer bed. Water pressure for our shower was awesome!
- James (10/5): Nice Resort - Super resort. Everything was perfect from room to breakfast. Front desk was knowledgeable n conversive in English. Shuttle service was great and convenient. Bus service around area was was on time and exceptional. Pool was nice. Never tried onsen but going again. Happy Trails
- MW (4/5): The hotel is impossible to find from the bus stop. - Find another place to stay. The website’s description of the place is not what it is. The staff are non-communicative and we found out this morning that there is no hot water for the shower.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - #1. Location far away from station. Very hard to find the hotel because of poor sign and no direction.
#2. NOT clean. No making the bed and no cleaning thru-out our stay.
- Paul (4/5): Great place, hotel does not match. - The Hakone area was great and the 3 day pass for transport was excellent, as was the bag delivery service from the rail station. Unfortunately the Hotel did not match. English was basically non existent, restaurant not functionally the first night and very expensive for the meal, use the local Family Mart store. The shuttle bus only went between 3 hotels and their car parks. The room was very good and the views excellent.
- Sue (10/5): Very nice and comfortable - Helpful staff. Some staff spoke English. Olsen was very nice. Buffet breakfast was more than we expected.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Overall it was okay. The place is dated but clean. If you decide to swim make sutra d bring a swimming cap or you must purchase one. Theonsen was good and hit. Had the western breakfast and it was good.
- Kurt (2/5): Best avoided. Bad smell. Rude staff.Old decor. - This place is impossible to find. Do not attempt to find it on foot or public transport.
I called the Hotel and asked for directions, but was rudely told off and stated "can't speak english".
When asked if they could call a taxi for me( I'll be paying of course), they bluntly said do it yourself.
When I finally found the place( after 4 hours), the staff were very rude and unfriendly. I was also told I could'nt have dinner there as I did not have a reservation( I arrived there approx 545PM). There seems to be no places to eat around there, apart from the hotel where you are staying.
Surprisingly though , the staff could speak english now, which previously they said they could'nt.
I agree with other reviewers, the place had a musty, damp, fungal like odour. Not great for asthmatics.
The smell is really terrible!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok hotel, but location might be hard to find - Staff were friendly, and facilities were clean, but hotel seems a bit old.
Location might be hard to find, and visitors should know that it is near Hakone Kowakien Yunessun, and there is a shuttle service between this hotel and the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun.
- Verified traveler (8/5): First stay in Japan - Hotel is getting a little warm, but very clean and good sized rooms. If you do not speak Japanese be sure to have Google Translate with you as very limited English is spoken at the hotel. Beautiful area to walk and explore, just be ready for the streep hills. High speed wireless in the rooms was EXTREMELY fast (speed test was showing over 18 Mbps when I stopped the test) which was very helpful for downloading business presentations. Breakfast was very good - really enjoyed the mix of Japanese and western styles)
- Luis Arturo (8/5): Good stay - It was good. In the web page is missing directions to get to the hotel by bus from a train station.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Too old - one onset is OK, but closes early. The other Olsen is in bad condition. Checkout should be 11am, but told 10am.
- lindsey (8/5): Mixed Review - Difficult to get to & they provided us with no info on how to get there! If going, take any bus that goes to Yunnessen, the water park, from there, catch a small shuttle that runs every 15 minutes & goes to a few hotels in the area. Wisterian is a regular stop on that shuttle. The location is far from any sort of town area with eating options or streets to stroll. Prepare to be isolated! There is a restaurant in the hotel that you can do dinner at if you speak Japanese and can get a res. No English menu! There are 2 Italian cafe type restaurants in Yunnessen & a small snack bar type place too. So you can take the shuttle down there, or walk down, to eat there. But be prepared to walk back up the hill to Wisterian if you are out past 7:20 PM when the shuttle stops. There is a Family Mart across the street from Yunnessen that we visited to stock up on packaged meals. The staff at Wisterian speak NO English. That made most everything difficult for us in terms of planning how to get out & see the sites in Hakone. Internet only works in the lobby, not in the rooms. The rooms are very big. Our room was clean, however, we stayed for 3 nights & never had any housekeeping come in except to drop off new towels. The hot spring and "healthclub" areas of the hotel are dated and tired. For the price, I think the hotel is of good value. We found accomodations to be very expensive in Japan and this was the most space for our money we got the entire 3 weeks we were there!
- Christopher (8/5): Better if you Speak Japanese - The room, amenities breakfast and onsen facilities were very good. This was my first experience with this part of Japanese culture and it was a both enlightening and enjoyable. The staff were very pleasant however their English was limited and our Japanese unfortunately very poor. Hence, there was some difficulties in communicating our wishes and questions. Another concern was the location of the property. One can take a bus from Hakone to a sister property at the bottom of a hill near the Okada Museum of Art. There is a free shuttle that runs up the hill until about 8 pm. After this time one must climb up and down on foot to find a place to eat in the evening.
All in all a good place to stay in a lovely environment. However, the property is probably more suitable for a Japanese-speaking clientele with independent transport.
- Jordan (8/5): - Good value for price beautiful views
- CS (6/5): Good health/onsen resort - It is more of a resort than hotel. To really get your money worth, you should allocate more time to spend in the hotel and use its amenities like heated indoor swimming pool and public baths. Also budget for the breakfast and dinner - good experience. And spend a full day at Yunessan. There is a UFO catcher in the "games room" and I managed to get something - i.e. it is not a rigged machine.
Hotel room is big. Two beds and two futans so it can fit 4 adults comfortably, with space to spare! Clean with a rustic feel. Toilet is big and clean, with a full size bath tub with "onsen water". TV limited to Japanese channels. No room service and vending machines only sell drinks.
The shuttle bus only brings you to Yunessan, and three other hotels (or B&B) in the immediate neighbourhood. You can walk to a convenience store from one of the shuttle stops (Hotel Kowakien) but beware, shuttle service stops early! (7.40pm when i was there). Some public buses will stop at Yunessan, which is one of the shuttle stops. The other buses stop just outside Hotel Kowakien (no shelter, bring umbrella)
Get the Hakone Free Pass to get around via public transport. Once you get the hang of it, it is quite easy.
- Leonard (10/5): Inexpensive and Comfortable - A great find on hotels.com. I can relate to the other reviews I read re:location of the hotel as it was difficult to find. The correct location is contrary to what is published on the website. If you look at google maps the hotel is directly North of Yunessun Water park. Drive past the water park and up the hill and you'll find the hotel on the left. The hotel was in excellent condition and we were very comfortable. Although they do not have any non-smoking rooms ours did not smell like smoke at all. Our room was western/japanese style. The hotel spa is Male/Female separated and did not allow any clothing to include towels. If you come to Hakone do not miss the ropeway at Lake Ashinoko or the ropeway that originates at the Sounzan cablecar station.
- Renae (8/5): Convenient - We caught a taxi $10 to the hotel as it was a little hard to find.. Once there we were convenient to the bus, they had a free shuttle to the train.. We had a lovely time in Hakone. The beds in the hotel were hard but I think that is in all hotel in Japan.. We would suggest purchasing a free pass while staying in Hakone it was great value. There are little grocery stores. The food and drinks were expensive everywhere in Hakone.
- Leighton (6/5): Far away from the main train station - The location is not convenient, far from the train station and hard to local them. However the rooms has a lot of space also have a living room area which makes it a more enjoyable stay.
