Guest Reviews
- Neil (10/5): - Great proper English pub dog friendly. All the staff are helpful and friendly the room we were in ticked all the boxes . We stayed for 2 nights clean towels on second day . Traditional pub with good rooms . Went into Chichester which was about 20min drive great day out beautiful Cathedral. We will going back to the fox goes free .
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Checking in, we felt we were something of a nuisance the girl on reception didn't have time for.
'Fill this in-come upstairs-this is your room'
Gone. We had been walking, so perhaps we looked like Riffraff.
Faint smell of sewage but that was because the shower plug was bunged up but whiff did disappear after one use.
Was very busy for food and its probably very good but we hadn't booked so went a few minutes down the road to another pub, which had a much warmer welcome.
- Neil (10/5): - If you like a 400-year-old English Country Pub this site is for you as it was for us. We loved the quaint atmosphere and the cheerful staff. Food was traditional fare and well presented. Parking was close to accommodation.
- Christine (10/5): Good for a short break - Lovely old pub. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff.
Just stayed a couple of nights but all very comfortable in this characterful property.
- Jody (6/5): - Nice pub, decent food and very good breakfast. Rooms are basic and overpriced for the standard of facility. Room was tiny and cheaply furnished. Bed was uncomfortable, bedding not hotel standard
- Joanne (10/5): - We had a lovely stay at the Fox room and food were great and as we had been to Goodwood, not far to go either. Staff were great and the Pub & garden were very cosy with great garden views.
But !!! Although breakfast was included for the two of us who stayed and we paid for two extra guests to join us….
We did not expect to pay for Teas & coffees as extra at £3.50 per cup (even for the two of us where breakfast was included) is my only complaint
- Martyn (10/5): - Perfect surroundings and excellent food and service
- Jeff (10/5): - Friendly, professional staff, great menus, very good food and drinks, in a lovely pub.
- Stephen (10/5): - If you are looking for an 'olde world' hotel but with modern facilities AND great food & drink then look no further.
- paul (8/5): - Stayed one night after a wedding near by. Great staff. Amazing beer garden and views
- jeffrey (6/5): - Food at breakfast and evening meal was very good.
We stayed in room number 1 which was at the top of eight, steep and narrow stairs, which was far too close to a hot, food smelling ( it was a kitchen after all!)
noisy kitchen. A good and bad experience.
- Raife (10/5): - Not easy to find but well worth it
- Jeremy (10/5): - Very convenient for Goodwood track, where I was spending the day
You might focus some of your advertising towards petrolheads, if not doing so already
- Jennie (8/5): - Brilliant food, but tv’s in rooms need upgrading - need at least freeview / smart tv
- Susan (10/5): - VERY HAPPY WITH EVERYTHING
- Pamela (10/5): - Stayed in room 4 this time, accessed on the ground floor off of the front patio. Everything nice and clean, plenty of tea and coffee, hot chocolate and horlicks and bottled water.
We stayed for dinner, but while it was a long wait, it was well worth it as it was delicious.
Room 4 had twin beds, and the only problem I had was the mattress wasn't comfortable for me as I struggle with back problems. My husband, however, had no problems with the bed.
We have stayed before, and will stay again.
- deborah (10/5): - Excellent location staff food and accomodation. The garden is also stunning. Can’t fault this place and should like to return.
- Peter (10/5): - Very cosy, log fires in a 400year old building with character and history on the edge of a small village. Ideal for visiting the Goodwood events, the Downland Museum and West Dean Gardens.
- Thomas (10/5): - Lovely old inn in beautiful countryside and great food
- Jeremy (10/5): - Great staff and food in a real character pub in beautiful surroundings
- Olawale (10/5): - Beautiful place in a beautiful location and the staff were very welcoming.
- Kristian (10/5): Excellent. Will stay here again. - Would (& will) happily stay here again. Lovely location, Staff & atmosphere. Great food & beautiful Rooms
- Martyn (10/5): - Excellent food, accommodation and hospitality in a beautiful place and setting. Staff and customers were so friendly. Wil go back again.
- Helen (10/5): - Great location for walking in West Sussex. Beautiful old coaching inn restored with thought and care. Pleasant, friendly staff. Good food, wine and ales. Rooms spacious, clean and well-appointed. Highly recommend for a relaxing, comfortable country weekend
- Dawn (10/5): - Lovely weekend away joined the clay pigeon day and decided to stay the night, this little pub is wonderful, relaxing and the food is brilliant, highly recommend
- Antony (10/5): - Room
- Paul (10/5): - A beautiful location. Exceptional service.
- Lorraine (10/5): - The food excellent and the chef Tim was great at explaining how he cooked our exceptional meal.
The staff were so friendly and helped makes our weekend an enjoyable experience.
- Terence (10/5): - Really good stay , came over from Spain for a family wedding .
For the two nights we stayed ALL the staff were friendly and helpful . The young lady at breakfast was brill nothing was to much trouble .
Our first night we ate from the menu I had chilli and Jan had the fish pie . My chilli was underwhelming and the fish pie the sauce was thin . My two nephews joined us later they had the pork belly 10/10 .
Our first night customers / staff could be heard talking into the early hours from downstairs . Yes it’s an old build .
The gentleman that made our coffees and hot chocolate was a star .
Accept this feedback as constructive and not as critisizem
If in the area again would not hesitate to stay again .
PS breakfast chef spot on, my poached eggs perfect both days
- Richard (10/5): - Spotlessly clean room, lovely atmosphere in the bar, good food, excellent range of beers and wines
- John (6/5): A lovely pub but take better care of your guests - I was a regular customer before the pandemic. Still a lovely location with good food and comfortable. Since last staying it is clear the restaurant side is dominating the everything to detriment of the pub. Had to change our set breakfast time and still waited 35 minutes before we could even get a cup of tea and longer for breakfast because a party of 14 non residents came for breakfast. We later heard the chef apologise to them and offer a discount because THEY had to wait! My advise would be take care of your resident guests first or at least give them a coffee or tea while they have to wait and only take large party outside bookings if you can cope.
- SJ (4/5): Oh dear!! - We have stayed before and this was a return visit based on past good experience but, for whatever and a variety of reasons it was a huge let down from before
- Jenelle (10/5): - Friendly staff, excellent menu with all food cooked on order. Great location, halfway between Chichester and Heathrow
- Allanah (10/5): - We absolutely loved this property. What's not to like about staying in a 400-year-old pub that serves fabulous food. Undoubtedly the best sausage and mash (with a red wine jus and farm fresh veggies) I've had in my life and breakfast was just as delicious. A brilliant beer garden that I didn't want to leave and I felt envious seeing flyers informing me of upcoming live music events in the beer garden that I was going to miss out on. We had a beautifully styled quaint little room with windows opening out onto the lane. A real touch of country charm heaven.
- Michele (8/5): - The beer garden with views of the rolling hills were the highlight of our stay. We enjoyed drinks in the garden in the late afternoon and stayed on to watch the sun set.
The room was cosy but agree with other reviews regarding murmurs from the pub until 11pm and the aromas from the kitchen filtering to the rooms upstairs. Otherwise a pleasant nights sleep as the pub is located in a quiet neighbourhood.
Prepare your stomach as the breakfast is BIG! Only a few breakfasts have defeated my husband and it was such a shame to waste any of the food as the ingredients were great quality.
We really did enjoy our stay and would definitely stay again when in the area.
- Robert and Lesley (10/5): - Great location and food.
- Darren (10/5): Cute little inn with excellent servuce and food - Lovely little country inn, serving excellent food and with excellent service. Couldnt fault it. Looking forward to visiting here again.
- Melanie (10/5): Would definitely recommend! - Fantastic venue, friendly staff and amazing views. The breakfast was out of this world and would definitely stay again!
- Lucy (10/5): - Lovely accommodation in a fabulous setting. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I left an item of clothing and they kindly sent it back to me very quickly. Cannot fault the service.
- Paul (8/5): - Lovely old pub surrounded by beautiful countryside with excellent food.
- Robert (10/5): - Lovely place, great staff
- Elizabeth (10/5): Cosy and Friendly - Enjoyed our night here - we shall return! Food especially good.
- Derek (10/5): Away day break - The stay was magnificent. The staff totally obliging and the food has to be experienced as regards choice and quality.
A superb location in a quaint pub/inn
- Anita (10/5): - A very pleasant stay. Food & service are its greatest selling points. Our room was warm & comfortable & reasonably priced.
- Jenny (10/5): - The Fox is always great. Clean, comfortable rooms. Food, drink and service always excellent.
- Paul (10/5): - Superb setting, excellent food, and had the bonus of live music in the evening.
- Jeff (10/5): - Amazing food and service. English breakfast is very good and large.
- Hazel (8/5): - Cosy
- Dawn (8/5): Nice place to stay - Stayed in rooms 4&5 in the outer courtyard. Quiet and comfortable rooms, one too hot, the other too cold! User error maybe but the staff did also say they had had the repair man in… good food
- Richard (10/5): - Had 3 of their 5 rooms for a family gathering. Beautiful old-world rooms in ancient pub in lovely quiet village.
Perfect retreat-wish we could have stayed longer..we’ll be back soon.
Much thanks to Sam and Cristian for such an enjoyable stay.
- Kay (8/5): South Downs gem. - Lovely welcome. Great team. Lovely food. Great bread. Only negative is that it was a bit hot for our liking.
But We’d stay again.

- sally (10/5): Excellent - The stay was really good. The bed was very creaky though sk didn’t sleep to well. Excellent breakfast and restaurant. Staff were excellent too.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Highly recommended - Everything was 10/10 - a friendly welcome, a clearly displayed wifi password, set up with a late key, a well-presented room and wonderful shower. Breakfast in the morning was superb - I chose from a menu and my cooked breakfast was the best I've ever had. I'm keen to stay again/try out the restaurant!

- Michael (10/5): Brilliant pub. - It is a very old picturesque inn and has a lovely garden with beautiful views. We stayed two nights in a very comfortable room. Breakfast was excellent and so was dinner.
- TRACEY (10/5): - Lovely 2 night stay, beautiful location. Rooms were large, and very clean and comfortable. Food was delicious and served by very friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Look forward to staying again soon.
- Susan (10/5): - Super ground floor accommodation, clean and comfortable.
Lovely old pub with super gardens. Friendly, helpful staff.
Great breakfasts, good choice. Delicious home made bread!
Great restaurant with delicious food, some new specials each day - all in set in a beautiful location.
- Anthony (10/5): - The welcome, service and hospitality are second to none. Nothing was to much trouble.
- Vicki (10/5): Quiet retreat - Wanted somewhere close to a local museum to stay overnight and this place was ideal. They were very welcoming and we had a lovely evening meal and breakfast.
We were glad we had the Satnav to fine the place.
- John (10/5): Beautiful pub in West Sussex countryside - Room was Comfortable if a little small. Good food, beautiful location. Quiet location, but pub was busy.
- Christine (10/5): - A lovely pub in a beautiful setting. We were very impressed with the attention to detail both in the room and the food. The breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked to order. Set us up for the day!
- Peter (10/5): - A wonderful 400 year old pub, very quirky, staff very friendly, food a high standard.
- Karen (10/5): - Outstanding. The inn it
- Verified traveler (10/5): review of Fox goes free - Our room was welcoming and plush the food was excellent
and the host friendly. Would recommend and return
- Fiona (8/5): Weald & Downland training stop over treat - Lovely warm room. Well fitted windows & doors with no drafts. Very comfortable room. Lovely crisp clean bedding. Ecological use of a shower gel dispenser : ).
Unfortunately I do not like to see lots of single use plastic disposable toiletries as they contribute to the single use plastic waste mountain. Hence I leave those untouched. Excellent breakfast.
- Tanya (8/5): - Just what we needed for the evening. Quiet, friendly, relaxed and comfortable.
- Dawn (10/5): Charming - This is a truly lovely place to stay. The people, food and place is super. We only stopped one night, as we were in transit, but would have been happy to use as a base to visit the surrounding area. Our room was very clean, had all the facilities you need, but it was also very charming. When we walked in it had that 'How lovely' feel. I would highly recommend.
- David (10/5): - Very Comfortable and good food
- Steven (10/5): - The place looks lovely the staff were so friendly and the food was excellent. The outside space was lovely a huge rear beer garden and lots of space at the front of the pub for those busy summer days.
- Trevor (10/5): Brilliant from start to finish - We had a 2 night stay arriving early evening on the bank holiday Monday. It was very quite the check in easy and our room was a good size with plenty of character.
We had the bar to ourselves that night and were able to have a nice chat with the Bar manager. Good selection of beers, wine and gin.
Bed very comfortable.
Breakfast both days superb in a nice dining area.
A lovely day spent in the Witterings and Itchenor then back to the hotel for our evening meal. Pub was busy with a great feel to it and restrurant had a interesting menu and our meals were excellent
We wanted to explore the area and coast line adjacent to the hotel.
We will definitely go back.
- Neil (10/5): - Absolutely brilliant place to stay and food and staff brilliant
- Jason (10/5): Fantastic location - We stayed at The Fox Goes Free for the first day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival. The hotel was really accommodating in freeing up a room for us to change in and also assisting us with transport to the course. Really friendly, excellent food in the restaurant and a delightful garden with stunning views. Highly recommended.
- douglas (10/5): Superb stay in a beautiful, quiet village - Superb stay in this beautiful village pub. Lovely comfortable and quiet room, excellent breakfast. Unfortunately we had to cancel our dinner reservation as we were delayed at work, but the owner couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. We will definitely return.
- Shaun (10/5): Fantastic break at an excellent pub. - Two nights being very well looked after by extremely hard working staff during the hottest week of the year. Stunning location, great food and attentive service. Special mention for Saffi whose customer service was spot on.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was a perfect place. The pub was excellent. Food and drink perfect. Would definitely recommend and will re visit in the future.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic stay - very clean and well looked after. Amazing full English breakfast! Staff were friendly. We ate in the pub and were very happy with the food. Had a room above the kitchen so quite noisy whilst the pub was open but otherwise a lovely place to stay.
- Martin (10/5): Great pub and room - We stayed for one night but wished we had booked two! It is in the little hamlet of Charlton and is the perfect get away with great food and drinks at reasonably prices considering it's location to Goodwood. Great walks around the local area and South Downs.

Rooms are clean and compact.
The full English breakfast has to be up on the podium with one of the best I've had.
Would definitely stay again, if ever I was up that way.
- Gordon (10/5): A country retreat - Set in idyllic countryside, a stay here was a joy.
Complying with Covid rules, dining was outside, and the chill in the air, albeit under perfect blue sky, was more than offset by spectacular views and great food.

- Richard (10/5): Old world charm with modern touches - Lovely ambiance and fantastic staff, breakast and hospitality top rate.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Fox goes free- Goodwood stay - Stayed in one of the twin rooms, very clean and tidy, would have been nice to arrive slightly earlier than 9.30pm, as the food in the pub/ restaurant looked delicious. Breakfast was very filling and nice, If I had one thing to mention was the shower was underpowered, but that is really just ‘splitting hairs’. A great place, would easily recommend. 👍😀
- Peta (10/5): Downstairs bedrooms. - We were travelling with an Assistance dog, who was made very welcome. The room were we’re staying in was just off of the outside courtyard, so very convenient for us, as no stairs to climb.
