Guest Reviews
- Rainer (10/5): Einer der besten B&B Unterkünfte, jederzeit wieder! - Hervorragendes Frühstück in wunderschönem Wintergarten mit tollem Weitblick. Sehr gepflegtes Haus mit freundlichen Gastgebern.
- Arthur (10/5): -
- Edward (10/5): -
- Douglas (10/5): A taste of Eden - Every detail of the place Absolutely nothing
- Tessa (10/5): - I really can’t fault anything about the stay - absolutely charming in every respect ….
- Peter (10/5): Very efficient, and enjoyable - Room and breakfast excellent. Friendly owners.
- Paul (10/5): -
- Sonja (10/5): - Perfekt!
Thanks to Linda and Ian!!
- David (10/5): Exceptional experience and a fantastic place to stay - My partner and I stayed at Fernside for 2 nights and were blown away. This place really is a hidden gem, tucked nicely into the quit countryside of Devon.
Prior to arriving my partner called to check a few things and Linda could not have been more helpful. When we arrived, we were greeted by both Linda and Ian, who immediately made us feel right at home, they showed us around, gave us a breakfast menu from which we could choose the breakfast we'd like the next morning and then took us to our room. After showing us our room, Linda promptly returned with a thermos a fresh milk so we could have a coffee in our room.
The room itself was stunning. A country living style decor, full ensuite bathroom with a separate waterfall shower and claw foot tub. Plenty of nice smelling lotions, fluffy towels and a robe each. Our room came with a TV, matching chest of drawers, dressing table and large dress mirror, wardrobe and king sized bed. Which was unbelievably comfortable!
We arrived late in the evening so it was dark, but in the morning we were met by amazing views of the hills and the garden Linda and Ian keep beautifully maintained. There is also a pond you can walk to, and be sure to give the horses and apple each on your way which Ian will gladly provide from his kitchen.
Lastly, the breakfast cooked by Ian is incredible. On the first morning we both had a starter of yoghurt and fruit, followed by smoked salmon with scrambled egg, home grown tomatoes with homemade bread (baked fresh that morning) all accompanied by a cafetiere a hot filtered coffee. You have a variety of breakfast options on the menu provided on arrival. We had a full English the next morning, all ingredients locally sourced and ordered grown and you can taste it!
Overall, an effortlessly sophisticated experience with personalised touches at every corner. Please give Linda and Ian your business as they very much deserve every penny!
- Jamie (10/5): Can’t recommend this beautiful place enough - Everything was perfect

- Roy (10/5): The perfect weekend escape! - We made a return visit after 11 years, and Ian and Linda were just as welcoming this visit as they were on our first. Even after 11 years, we were genuinely remembered as having stayed at Fernside before. Both Ian and Linda catered for our every need. The accommodation is still to the same high standard, and the breakfast is varied, with a wide choice of options. The location is perfect to have a few days away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the Devon countryside. Our only regret is not returning sooner! There is nothing not to like!
- Julia (10/5): A place like in a fairy tale - This place was incredible. Every little detail was considered and room was really clean and cosy. Hosts was really hospitality and friendly. Breakfast was amazing. Everything was perfect. Best accommodation where we have ever been.

- Brunnilde (10/5): Serene landscape, beautiful room, and delicious breakfast - Beautiful, charming, well-maintained thatched cottage with a large and beautiful garden and pond. The hosts are very welcoming yet let you enjoy your privacy. They both seem kind-hearted and you can feel the care and love put in the rooms as well as in their delicious breakfast. Very comfortable bed, beautiful bathroom, with a superb view on countryside hills. The toilet seat is a tiny bit too high if you're not tall :). Pets are not allowed which is totally understandable - it's the only thing that may prevent us returning if we adopt a doggy.
- Noel (10/5): Excellent 5 STAR B&B - Excellent B&B. By far the BEST B&B we have ever stayed at. Location in rual Devon was great. Their building, the lounge, the breakfast room and our room was exceptional. Our hosts were lovely, very helpful and delivered the highest level of service you could expect. Regarding the breakfasts, they were outstanding. They were the meal we most looked forward to each day. Our compliments to the chef! The gardens on the property were lovely with the most outstanding views you could ask for. It was such a delight to stay here. Highly recommend. A well earned 5 STAR rating!
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sylvia (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely countryside Farmhouse. Very nice and comfortable room with amazing view. Friendly hosts who made very nice breakfast
- Bart (10/5): Wonderful place for a quiet stay with the greatest views - Our room was marvellous with a great bed and stand-alone bath and shower, both with old style robinets. The wooden inner doors are so beautiful. All is high end quality. We had a selection of teas and coffee with daily fresh milk in our room. The choice of breakfast was abundant with homemade granola, fresh fruit, porridge, full cooked breakfast and even salmon and eggs. Too much to ask. Linda and Ian are wonderful hosts who were happy to help in any way. The views over the countryside are breathtaking. One morning we counted 60 pheasants from our window! As it is tucked away, you need a gps to find it. The roads are very narrow. At the same time this adds to the exceptional experience of this wonderful place.

Friendly hosts gave attention to detail, ensuring guests are looked after in a relaxed atmosphere. We didn’t want to leave! Everything was perfect.
- Nigel (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Superb. Traditional bed and breakfast done perfectly. - Superb. Traditional bed and breakfast done perfectly. In a thatched cottage that started out as a farmworker’s house that has been added to over time. Situated along a ridge overlooking a pretty rolling valley, deep in the Devon countryside, amidst Devon lanes, sheep, cows and horses. The owners are delightful, and immediately found us good pubs to have dinner at a couple of miles away when we arrived late. We had a big room at the upstairs front, with a deliriously comfortable king-sized bed and soft carpet. Best night’s sleep we had in England. Absolutely quiet. Good bathroom with good shower, also a bath. Everything immaculately clean. Power points on both sides of the bed. Nice shared sitting room downstairs. Superb full English breakfast with local and hand-made ingredients, excellent coffee and real juice, in a glazed breakfast room, looking onto the countryside. We were there only one night but it would a great place to settle in to detox and explore rural Devon. Excellent value for money. Nothing
- Danielle (10/5): Amazing few days away. Would definitely return! - Friendly owners, breakfast was lovely, clean, great views, peaceful. A real enjoyable break away! Nothing was very satisfied
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Dietlind (10/5): Perfect place to stay, absolutely recommendable ! - It was extremely well designed, with lots of love for the details. Extraordinary indeed. From the homemade omelette and bread to the outside view and setting, as well as the owners , everything absolutely perfect Nothing
- Andrew (9/5): Ideal spot for peaceful stopover or longer stay. - Excellent breakfast with a good menu choice. Comfortable bed and first rate ensuite facilities. The hosts were friendly, accomodating and informative. Superb views from the property and interesting group of livestock both domestic and itinerant. Difficult to find any negative comments. Perhaps a second chair in the already well equipped bedroom and would prefer mugs to drink tea but we are in the realms of being nit-picky.
- Philip (10/5): A superb country B & B - Many thanks to Ian and Linda for a superb stay. Very clean, comfortable and welcoming. Superb breakfast! Loved seeing the sheep and peacocks in the morning. A very peaceful stay. We hope to return. Nothing about the accommodation but there are some narrow country lanes to navigate to get there.
- Dennis (10/5): Relaxing and tranquil just what we needed. - Beautiful location, wonderful hosts, exceptional breakfast would recommend.
- Rachel (10/5): Bliss - So peaceful here and the hosts are such lovely kind and friendly people and the food is amazing very generous and lots of choices
- Kirsty (10/5): A calming and peaceful place. - The whole stay was an amazing experience. The countryside views to the bedroom and ensuite. Could sit in the garden was hours admiring the lands for miles. Not to mention the beautiful horses, sheep, peacocks and geese that were within touching distance. The hosts were so friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much for them. The breakfast was delicious, such a great selection. Put a smile on my face when I walked into the bedroom to find Lindt Chocolates on each side of the bed tables. The beds were so comfortable and the ensuite was nice, clean and tidy too as well as the bedroom. The tea and coffee station in the bedroom had a great variety of drinks to make and even come with biscuits! Honestly, the best B&B I've ever stayed in. I definitely would recommend and stay at again on my next trip to Devon.

Nothing we can think of.
- Frances (9/5): Perfect rural stay and delicious breakfast! - We stayed at Fernside in April this year and had a fantastic holiday. Our room had views over their beautiful garden and the room was large and comfortable with a large private bathroom. Our room even had a little balcony with chairs so you could sit nestled into the thatched roof over looking the countryside - unfortunately it was just a bit too chilly this April to enjoy this but would be lovely during the summer! I am gluten free and the owners couldn't have been more accommodating. I put a special request in when booking and they messaged straight away to ask about breakfast and what I would like. The breakfast was superb on all mornings - fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast, homemade preserves, different cooked breakfast options such as omelettes, full English, scrambled eggs and smoked fish. It was definitely the best B&B breakfast we have ever had. The owners are lovely and very welcoming and left out fresh milk when we got back from trips so we could make a nice cup of tea in our room! I would definitely recommend a stay here - thank you Ian & Linda.
