- Barry (7/5): Comfortable overnight stop in a quiet village. - Nice room and bathroom, very comfortable bed and good shower with fancy switch outside to play with! Hot water almost instant. Reasonable selection of typical pub food in the bar with very good local ales. Hadn't booked breakfast with our rate but after discussion with waitress in the restaurant the night before, decided to pay for it anyway as we were advised the service started at 8am (note: for Saturday morning). However, on arrival at 8am, was advised by the staff it was an 8:30am start which conflicted a little with our morning plans. Staff adamant it was 8:30am, although at least one more guest had been advised 8am too like us. Bar staff to be corrected - maybe is earlier in the working week?

However, the room was lacking certain essentials (hairdryer, milk etc). The breakfast was not great, and no staff at all around to help! The pub was great as were the rooms. Staff super nice and food spot on. Definitely booking his next year for our stopover. Would highly recommend The shower was not as hot as Iâd like but to be fair it was just after 8pm so it wasnât a problem

Atmosphere non existent. - Very unwelcoming, ill mannered, obviously stressed bar person more intent on cleaning than helping us. Wifi ridiculously difficult to link in. Very basic food served for supper in a rush as the kitchen was closing at 8:30pm when we arrived, so not allowed to check in and change before eating and no other diners or customers that we saw. Stifling hot very small double room over the kitchen with buzzing fan off and on most of the night. Main room light flickering. Only one bath and one hand towel for 2 guests! Didnt see any other guests at all. No kitchen staff or anyone else from the pub present at breakfast so no cooked food and DIY bits and pieces left out. We had to search in fridges ourselves to find butter. No yoghurt as suggested there would be the night before. No other guests that we saw either. Lady cleaner, who didnt understand any English, hoovering just beside where we were trying to talk and prepare and eat our snack.

- Amanda (7/5): 3 nights in East Ilsley - Lovely quiet area and close to the Ridgeway for our planned walks. The room was spacious with a very comfortable bed, I would like to know where to purchase the mattress as I have a bad back and this mattress was great. Plenty of drink sachets in the room. Continental breakfast had plenty of choice though we would have preferred wholemeal/ wholegrain bread not white. The shower was cold the first morning despite adjusting the digital dial, the only staff member we saw didn't speak English so didn't understand when I tried to inform her about it, however it worked fine in the evening and no issues after the first morning, it was hot with good pressure. Overall our stay was good value for what we paid. WiFi was virtually non-existent, we spent more time trying to connect than actually be connected, I had planned to work online in the evenings so was unable to do that. We had a meal here on the first evening but decided to eat elsewhere the remaining 2 evenings.

- Alexander (3/5): I've never stayed in a pub without any breakfast. Very disappointing. - Room was small but OK for one person. Milk in room was good. I was surprised there was no breakfast. I am fairly sure this was included in the price when I booked.
- William (7/5): Some what underwhelming - The room was relatively small (but as described) but comfortable and clean. The staff were helpful. Oh dear - The listing said that food was served on Sunday evenings, this is not the case and so I had to drive to another location to eat, this was certainly not my intention. A previous review had also commented on a âgood breakfast â. The only breakfast on offer was a Continental one which is ok but I would not describe a good.

The manager was rude and abrupt and completely unsympathetic to the lack of breakfast availability despite it being listed as available on booking.com. He blamed me for the lack of clarity despite the fact that two other independent guests also believed breakfast would be available when it wasn't. He accused me of shouting at him. I didn't. I can only assume that he has had no training in customer care. Had that been the case he might at least have shown some understanding as to my disappointment and confusion and I would have probably just settled for that. Instead he blamed me for my confusion in quite an unpleasant manner despite knowing that there have already been issues concerning the breakfast (or lack of it) voiced by other guests and outlined by previous guests in their feedback (something I wasn't aware of at the time). I won't be staying there again. In short, don't expect breakfast whatever it says on the website. Do expect a confrontational attitude if you are not happy about anything. Additionally, I couldn't find any information about how to access the WiFi in my room. I was met with an equally dismissive attitude from the manager when I enquired about the WiFi and in order to connect to the WiFi you have to sign up to a Sky account of some sort. It is free, but you do have to enter your personal information including you name, age, phone number and email address and tick a box agreeing to receive email advertising. If they want to improve their service my advice would be to go on customer care training and review the information they put on their website and booking.com. If you are a potential customer, my advice is look for somewhere else.
- Hannah (8/5): Lovely, comfy and great service for a good price. - I have stayed here several times over the last 8 months and I have always found it to be good value for money, lovely and clean and the beds are probably the comfiest I've had in a hotel for a long long time. Staying over the winter have definitely been quieter which has been nice but the staff are always very friendly and they even started to recognise me which was lovely as well. The breakfast that is included has slightly changed each time which was nice for the variety but I knew could get a cup of tea, toast, yoghurt and a piece of fruit which was lovely. The cookie they give you on arrival in your room is a nice little touch as well. I have eaten dinner a few times as well, nice pub menu and always tasted good. One time I did have to find someone to open the room for breakfast and then had to wait for a few things to be set up which was a little annoying as I was hoping to leave in good time to get back to work but really that wasn't a big problem and only happened once.

Pub food is variable. - Great spot on the Ridgeway Trail with good included continental breakfast and well-appointed comfortable room and bed. They provided a nice cookie upon arrival. The food in the pub was not fabulous; fries/chips were good but burger was a disappointment. It looked like it had char stripes painted on and it was rubbery, dry, and the char tasted fake. Also, the bartender highlighted a deal with a beer and burger combo; but, did not notify me until the bill came that I had ordered a beer that did not qualify for special.

- Fleming-Hill (8/5): Lovely, friendly staff, great food, lovely rooms. I will be back. - It was nice coming back & knowing the location & layout. Last time I came it was summer so quite busy. There were a few people around but it was quiet which was nice. The bed was very comfortable & between some full on days at work & everything being quiet, I think it was one of the best nights sleep I have had in a hotel/away for a while. Really appreciate it! The shower/bath was a bit odd as the controls were outside but as it was a glass panel you had to get out to turn it off.

- Barry (7/5): Comfortable mid week stay in a large village pub. - Room was small but very comfortable bed and bedding. Good shower - interestingly switched on/off with separate electric controls. Food quality in the restaurant for meals and cooked breakfast was good too. For continental breakfast, warm fresh croissants, reasonably sized bowl of fresh fruit and large jug of freshly filtered coffee - good. "Pie night" on Wed gave good selection of very good home cooked pies. Good range of beers in the bar plus 2 handpumps with Doom Bar and a guest ale. The room had no heating control on the radiator so it was very hot/stuffy when we arrived, so had to leave the window open to regulate the temperature. No hair dryer in the room. Continental breakfast (inclusive in price) had limited range of cereals and bread (only poor quality white sliced bread available; - no brown/wholemeal bread or rolls).

Lovely rural location, yet only 5 minutes from Harwell Technology Park The free buffet breakfast could be elevated slightly, better tea bags, choice of bread. But now I'm being picky. - Averil (5/5): Comfortable bed , shame about breakfast. - Very comfortable bed in quiet village setting. We had to pre order our cooked breakfast the night before and say what time we wanted breakfast. This did not seem to help with the breakfast service , it was shambolic , we were offered to help ourselves to the continental breakfast before our cooked breakfast, and asked if we were ready for our cooked breakfast,and we said yes,but our cooked breakfast never turned up after waiting 40 minutes we asked how much longer we would have to wait , only to be told that his colleague had got muddled with the orders( there were only two other couples ). They offered to cook it for but as we had waited so long we had an appointment to get to we cancelled the order. There was no apology forthcoming. We would have stayed here again, but they way this dealt with and having to pre order breakfast we will not return.

We came off the Ridgeway in the rain to a cosy friendly pub welcoming dogs and walking boots. Cider festival to sample, tasty Wednesday 'pie and a drink' dinner offer and a clean comfy bed. Nothing more needed to recoup for the next stretch... The small bedrooms are small - but we knew that was likely from description - and the pub is friendly and large enough for there to be room to sit and read or chat downstairs.

- Lorraine (9/5): Great one night stay - The room was clean and comfortable with a walk in shower. Generous tea/coffee tray, Cookie on arrival (very nice). I was shown to my room on arrival and had my case carried for me. There was a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning which I was not expecting and the opportunity to purchase a cooked breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helpful and I felt very welcome. I didn't eat in the evening but had a few drinks in the bar and was made very welcome by the local regulars. Great atmosphere and well stocked bar. Stairs to my room but now know for future bookings if I speak direct to the venue I would have the opportunity to book a downstairs room with walk in shower, which is a must for me. It wasn't a problem because I was helped up and down the stairs with my case by the very willing staff.

- Karin (8/5): - Het personeel was heel erg vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Ik kreeg een welkomst-tasje met 2 heerlijke koeken. Het is vanaf the Ridgeway zo'n 25 minuten lopen, dus zoek je als wandelaar een overnachting, dan is het een goede plek. Fijn bed in een wat kleine maar schone kamer met kleine badkamer. Het ontbijt begon pas om 9.00 uur! Eventueel zou er nog iets mogelijk zijn om 8.30. Voor mij als langeafstandswandelaar echt veel te laat, dus ik ben maar zonder ontbijt vertrokken. Een forse tegenvaller. In een review las ik over de heerlijke onionrings; die bleken erg vet gefrituurd te zijn. De rest was degelijk pubvoedsel.

- Richard (8/5): - The room was clean and comfortable. The shower was modern and spacious with good water flow. Breakfast was good. Nothing major to complain about. Nothing substantially. The floors creak everywhere and the window was small, making the room quite dark. However, it's an old building, so it's to be expected.
- Fleming-hill (7/5): It was a lovely place & I will definitely be choosing to stay here again - I stayed here overnight as I was in Didcot for two days for work. It was a lovely village & a great price for the rooms. The room was a nice size & the bathroom was lovely as well. The continental breakfast that was included was simple but just what was needed. I also had dinner at the pub, I chosen chicken schnitzel & chips, it had a little baby gem lettuce drizzled with a sauce which was really nice. I should have picked an additional side salad but went for onion rings which were really lovely. The lady that served me was very nice & had the perfect balanced of checking in everything was ok but didnât hover & loiter. I asked a question about breakfast & she immediately offered to show me where it was served. I was told it was under new ownership so I do understand any little hiccups as they get settled. Any slight issues I did experience, didnât overshadow my stay. There wasnât anyone around at breakfast, whilst I didnât need anyone for serving, it did feel a bit odd being the only one around (& the music wasnât on straight away) until some other guests came down. I wondered what we did about check out & did hear someone say something about a key deposit which I did find shortly after as I was heading out.

The cooked breakfast was really nice and just the right amount. Staff are friendly. Village is quiet and peaceful but just off the A34! Great value for money with tea/coffee and biscuits in the room. Everything you need for a restful sleep!

- Michael (7/5): Ideal accommodation for an overnight stay in the area where I lived as a child - The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The fare provided for the evening meal was good value (a non-included extra). The continental-style breakfast was entirely satisfactory and was included 'gratis' with the booking (the breakfast was not shown as 'gratis' on the listing - please update the listing!) An initial problem with the room - but this was quickly resolved by the staff.

Duck pond and nice walks in the countryside nearby. Good food. Friendly staff. We didnât get to stay in old part of building.
