Guest Reviews
- Christopher (8/5): Pleasant welcoming stay - Lovely old buildings
- Page (7/5): -
- HollieBF (8/5): Welcoming and friendly - The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful. The pub has so much character. One of the rooms we had was a disability accessible room. This meant the bathroom.was more like a wet room. Once my mum had a shower then the entire room was soaking. We had to lay our towels down to use the room. The mattress was really hard also. Just to be clear, this was inconvenient for me and my mum. It might not be an issue to anyone else.
- GRAHAM (9/5): Very enjoyable and what we needed for that visit to Chievley - Great food lunch evening meal (served late as we requested) and comprehensive breakfast. Chatty friendly landlord and staff.
Large comfortable room… Bed a touch firm
- CF5 (10/5): A great find and ideal for what we were looking for. - The staff were amazing, friendly and welcoming. The room and bathroom were spacious and very clean.Breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked. The pub, itself, was ‘ a real village pub’. I wouldn’t hesiste to book a stay again.

- Patricia (8/5): Good - Breakfast fine location good It needs a new mattress in the room called Arran we felt the springs
- Pauline (8/5): A lovely break, super meal, outstanding service! - Fabulous breakfast! Clean room, well appointed just needed a bigger bed!! Need a king or queen size bed!
- Mary (8/5): Pretty Pub B and B - Lovely, large room. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent food in the pub, with a nice atmosphere. Breakfast was good. Bathroom needed re-decoration (bare plaster) and I could only fill the bath using the shower head - it would not switchover to the taps.
- Liz (9/5): - Friendly staff, lovely food and a great little cottage 😊 The mattress was too hard.
- reg (10/5): Excellent visit, great staff and very good food. - Staff superb, great attititudes including the cleaner!Landlord was very friendly and effecient
The atmosphere in the bar was very good,so was the food. Excellent room, could have preferred a king bed[but space may not allow].
This did not affect an excellent visit.
- sharon (9/5): - Rooms were clean and comfortable
- thomas (6/5): Excellent location warm and friendly. Please upgrade mattress - Location great for the show ground. Food was excellent New mattress desperately needed, like sleeping on stone
- Thomas (9/5): Great experience, would go there again - Cosy and comfortable.
Super welcoming and friendly staff.
Charming pub with lovely atmosphere and nice dinner/breakfast food next to the rooms.
- martin (8/5): Good - Quite ,comfortable , great food Fan in bathroom noisy and switching on and of all night
- John (10/5): Will stay again - Great place great shower
- Martin (8/5): Quaint bnb in nice village - Nice spacious quaint room, bed is large and food is good in the pub. Parking is good and safe. Small items need to be repaired, just needs a little bit of basic maintenance.

- Teresa (10/5): We would stay here again and would certainly recommend it to anyone who needs to be in the area. - We were met by a ferocious sounding dog, Carter the really rather lovely pub dog, although he sounded ferocious he wasn’t at all and he helped show us to our room, he was very friendly. The room was really nice good decors and clean. Everything you needed was provided, they even provided me with a small pot of cream when I explained that I was lactose intolerant. We both slept very well on a firm ( my preference) mattress and in the morning enjoyed my creamy coffee! The shower was clean and powerful and the toiletries provided were fragrant and unisex.
We went for breakfast in the main dining room. The breakfast arrived quickly and was hot. I had poached eggs which were just perfect and the sausages and bacon were good quality. My only problem was the seal around the shower was showing signs of needing to be replaced. We were not offered a choice of white or brown bread, brown came as standard.
- Evrard (8/5): Expérience de logement insolite - Accueil au top, le style des logements "insolites" est vraiment bien, la nourriture et le petit-déjeuner nickel.... Le style très très vieux, comme son nom l'indique et un peu abandonné des logements....
- Gary (9/5): - excellent Full English Breakfast
- Katy (10/5): Great location for Newbury races - Great find for our visit to Newbury. Breakfast included, 4 options to choose from and served in the pub restaurant. Also ate there both nights, food and service excellent. Room had all you needed, large room plus walk in shower.
- victor (10/5): Great location - Really great stay. Excellent pub food and atmosphere. They definitely need a new queen bed and pillows in the room we had. Otherwise excellent stay
- Barbara (10/5): - Personal sehr freundlich, Unterkunft sehr urig und gemütlich Für uns war die Matratze ein bisschen zu weich
- Charlotte (9/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): Enjoyable stay. Would return - Separate annexe from pub nice

- Dodd (8/5): Very good - Staff was excellent. Good selection of food, wide variety - huge portions.
Good location for our travels - from Portsmouth to Gloucester Suggest adding a wifi repeater in the middle room
- Nigel (9/5): Great place to stay if you don't want big hotel. - Great location and price, clean, comfortable and food in pub very good. Made to feel welcome.
- Doubleday (10/5): Great welcome and lovely pub - Lovely character pub, rooms great size Nothing
- Nigel (10/5): - Good food, great team
- Irene (7/5): Nice pub but at least the front facing room isn’t great. - Good food and classic pub atmosphere. Handy for the M4. Tiny room looking straight out to an outdoor sitting and car park, so it was quite noisy. The room was a bit tired looking
- Ian (9/5): Superb -
- Norman (8/5): Very good - A village pub with a buzz and with terraced rooms in a part thatched roof building
Nice Beer Rooms need a refresh
- Eli (7/5): Good -

- Harry (8/5): Fantastic stay, lovely staff and great food - Beautiful pub and lovely room WiFi wasn’t great in the room
- Elizabeth (9/5): Great overnight dinner, drinks and B&B. - Rooms are great - clean and just across from the pub. My Dad appreciated the walk in shower.
Dinner and breakfast were lovely. Staff were great and friendly. Love the pub as well.
Easy access to M4.
- Liam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Graham (8/5): Very good - Breakfast excellent
- Mr (10/5): - Really friendly and welcoming staff, couldn't have been more helpful.
- Hayley (9/5): Superb - Excellent food top chef
- Clifford (9/5): Very comfortable base for events at Newbury Showground - Excellent staff and stay. Really good selection for evening meals and breakfast. Very comfortable room with plenty of space around the bed.
- David (9/5): An excellent and convenient overnight stop. - The accommodation was excellent. An upstairs room in a separate semi - detached building with its own exterior entrance. The room is spacious, tastefully furnished and equipped and the adjoining bathroom is large, with modern bathroom furniture. The large shower is particularly good. The room was warm when the heating was on ( but see below !). The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful; and we had a particularly warm welcome from our landlord in the bar in the evening. We very much enjoyed the lively Friday bar night! Good beer; and a good breakfast in the morning. A really good overnight stay in a pub easy to reach from M4 motorway. The bed coverings. Although tastefully decorated, they were too thin and inadequate for a cold night. This upstairs room with an open top staircase leading directly into the bedroom itself means that in cold weather it is cold at night once the central heating goes off. We were so cold in bed as not to sleep properly and to have to get up in the night and put on some outdoors clothes ( jumpers and socks!). We would recommend providing duvets.
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chris (9/5): Superb - Friendliness of the staff. Clean pub and room. There was no blind or curtain in the bathroom window.
- Frances (8/5): Good location, friendly local pub with lovely atmosphere, quirky spacious accommodation. - Quiet, friendly location, quirky accommodation in adjoining cottages. There was some mould in the tiles and grout around the shower, this can easily be be sorted out and then 10 star !
- Luka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Clive (8/5): - Nice little flatlet. Good privacy. Helpful staff. Good location .
- Michael (10/5): - We arrived late but check in was quick and simple.
Breakfast was ordered.
The room was clean and serviceable and we had a good night's sleep.
Breakfast was delicious.
- Lucy (6/5): A bit disappointing. - The breakfast The room had a very low ceiling, the bed was small, there was a stained carpet, it was cold and there were only thin blankets, no duvet. It was September and I was cold.
- Lee (10/5): Great place to stay with great hosts too - A very comfortable place to stay, a stones throw from the M4 in a lovely village.
The hosts were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
Would definitely recommend for both work and leisure trips Nothing
- Stuart (10/5): - Great stay. Couldnt fault anything. Great hosts, good food and great accommodation. Highly recommended 👌
- Kerryann (9/5): Fantastic stay guaranteed with the Olde Red Lion - The food at the Red Lion is incredible, the chef is exceptional and the high quality of products used means the breakfast and dinner is always great. Rooms are clean and well kept and the beds are comfortable. It is nice and quiet so a good nights sleep is assured. Hair dryer not working.
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Dawn (7/5): Comfortable good value pub to stay for a couple of nights - Good atmosphere in the pub. Evening meal was very nice but service was a little slow. Breakfast was good. All staff were very helpful. Room was comfortable but a little tired. Bathroom decor was a little tired.
- Carol (7/5): Nice location - Friendly welcoming staff, great restaurant on site. Breakfast was ordered night before and was ready spot on time next morning. Presumably the accomodation was full so we ended up in a disabled room. It had a spacious wet room but it didn't drain well and still had wet floor next morning. This this is what is causing the mold on tiles etc.
There was a hairdryer provided but had a big do not use sticker on it, why not just remove the hairdryer?
- Mark (10/5): The 3 young lady’s behind the where very polite and nothing was 2 much trouble for them best var staff iv come across - The room was fantastic pub was a nice old county pub Every thing about it
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional - It's just so relaxing & friendly. Come & go as you please & the breakfast is so good
We at lunch & evening dinner & had no complaints about the food, sunday roast was awesome. There was nothing we didn't like, very minor suggestion for the "assessable room" the shower over the bath needs a hand rail to help pull yourself into the bath & to steady yourself when getting out. Otherwise all good.
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional - Every thing just a lovely place
- Paul (10/5): Chieveley Visit - Friendly staff, great food options,
- David (10/5): Graduation - 5th time i’ve stayed. Would recommend this accommodation to anyone
- Amanda (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing food./breakfast, evening meal.
Lovely staff.
- Ashley (10/5): Comfortable, peaceful, adjacent to the pub, and wonderful food. - Large room. Quiet even though next to the pub. Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was excellent! Quality ingredients, cooked perfectly to my liking. Great tradition old pub. The heavy brass keyring for room key!!
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (9/5): Old fashioned pub stay - Large comfortable room in characterful pub. Easy access from main road . Great breakfast and pub dinner was good.
- Stuart (10/5): Excellent - Clean comfy rooms. Excellent food and welcoming staff Nothing to dislike
- Michelle (10/5): Lovely!!! - Lovely place, nice choice of drinks, good breakfast.
Food was delicious.
We had a fantastic stay
- Edward (8/5): Very good -
- Lindsey (5/5): Passable - Great food, friendly staff. Pretty location but garden and exterior look bit unloved. Bedroom very dark, dated and airless with no privacy. Very noisy. Just be aware that all bedrooms lead directly to the outside seating area, so on a sunny summer evening we had people directly outside our bedroom and bathroom until 11 pm! No early night for us!
Bed pretty lumpy, could do with updating or a topper.
Seemed expensive for the quality of room.
- Paul (8/5): Very good - Great breakfast. Nice friendly staff. Accommodation was in a lovely old cottage. Wifi signal virtually non-existent in accommodation itself.
- Jacqui (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): Superb -
- J L (10/5): - Cosy and quaint.
- Anne (8/5): Very good -
- Julian (9/5): Lovely country pub with good quality food and accommodation - Great location, just off the M4 motorway. Great food, both evening meal and Breakfast. Traditional village pub atmosphere with large room. Way better than a 'chain hotel'. Nothing. We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay there.
- Jane (10/5): Loved it and would love to come back - Fab location, fab room Breakfast a bit disappointing (instant coffee) otherwise fine
- David (9/5): A thoroughly enjoyable stay, looking forward to a return visit! - The staff were all lovely and keen to make us feel very welcome. All the meals were very good, including the various breakfasts that we had over the course of three days.
Nice beer in the bar and a very cosy feel in general. The mattress on the bed needs replacing!
- Victoria (10/5): Fabulous, would definitely stay again! - Everything, friendly and welcoming. Lovely accommodation with everything you could need. Great location in a pretty quiet village, would definitely stay again. Nothing.
- Liam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yvette (8/5): - Lovely village pub . Separate building with rooms so no noise from the pub. Double bed ,wardrobe, bed side table and lamp with a desk (tea and coffees and bottle water). Large wet room/bathroom suitable for disabled access.
- Lorraine (10/5): A perfect stay - A most fabulous stay in amazing accommodation
Really loved the rooms
Dinner and breakfast were great Nothing
- Stephen (6/5): Bit Pricey but worth a look - Pub / restaurant/ hotel.
Drinks/ plenty of choice.
Food/ breakfast excellent cooked to order.
Restaurant food/ good food well cooked not much choice on menu although some specials were offered.
Rooms/ Clean basic, tea & coffee provided with kettle.
Maid service every day WiFi not available in Rooms.
We weren’t familiar with this part of the world and assumed this Hotel was in area with other similar venues, this wasn’t the case in fact it was pretty much isolated from other Pubs or shops.
Overall it was a nice stay with pleasant, helpful and attentive staff.
