• SUNG (10/5): One of my dream Onsen destination in Japan - This was one of my ultimate Onsen destination for a long time. I read an article about this place being one of the top 5 go-to-onsen not only for Japanese and Onsen lovers all over the world as you need to operate cable car down to the below Iya Valley to enjoy outside onsen with spectacular views. I enjoyed both male and female side in 2 days and I was simply overwhelmed by the scenery. Only down side was the water is not hot enough as it is a naturally flowing onsen water without heating up. Kaiseki was unique since they cooked local fresh water seafood mostly which was a rare for travelers to enjoy. Indoor onsen was also great as well. Only negative part was we were checked into 6th floor and my mom had a difficult time to go down and up to lobby for cable car Onsen, basement for indoor Onsen, Kaiseki was 5th fl but breakfast was at the lobby level. For elderly customer, try to get a room near the lobby just in case.

• ron (10/5): - This was our favorite part of a 2 week Japan trip. While the onsen’s were great, and amenities were fantastic, my favorite was the location and wilderness. Very remote, with lots and long “2 way road but 1car space” roads before you make it to the hotel which has parking for about 10 guest cars. 10/10!
• Jose Escobar (10/5): - Great Riokan and facilities. The open-air onsen accessible only by zipcar would be a destination of its own. If you are planning a trip to Oboke Gorge and the Iya Valley, this would be the wisest option. Just consider the CRAZY zigzagging roads made out of impossible curves to drive all around the valley. Really beautiful to see, a little nightmare to drive through. Two way roads where you would barely have space for one small car where you would constantly be looking at the mirrors at every curve and pray not to encounter another car on the curve or tightest parts of the roads.

• Chi Fong (10/5): - Secluded Hot Spring Resort Hotel - Highly Satisfied" I was very satisfied with hotel. The staff were excellent and attentive. They were aware that my daughter does not like to eat fish, and they tried to suggest that I choose the Western-style breakfast instead of the Japanese-style breakfast, which typically includes fish. However, due to the language barrier, they found another staff member who could speak English to better communicate this thoughtful recommendation. Additionally, one of the staff members had a minor accident while helping us with our luggage. I hope they recover soon. Overall, I am very satisfied and highly recommend this secluded hot spring resort hotel.

Le onsen au bord de la rivière est très beau, celui dans la chambre est très pratique et agréable. La chambre est belle et grande. Le repas du soir est tout simplement gastronomique (si vous appréciez la cuisine japonaise). C'est cher mais vous en avez largement pour votre argent.

Lovely, deep, private outdoor bath in the fresh air surrounded by the Iya forest and chirping birds at Iya onsen was the best way to relax and soak in the beauty of rural Shikoku. Meals were visually stunning.

• MDJL81 (10/5): Breathtaking Mountain Views - The Iya Onsen is one of those unique travel destinations that leaves you with a truly memorable experience. From the fabulous drive up the isolated narrow mountain road, to the view from the top into the valley below, the relaxation of the open-air baths at the river’s edge (or on your private terrace), the locally sourced and themed kaiseki meals, and the helpfulness and professionalism of the staff, the property offers an experience that clearly stands out among typical ryokan offerings, even more upscale ones. The prime feature of the Iya Onsen property, is of course, the incredible location and view from the top down into valley, which truly makes you stop to appreciate the natural beauty around you. The dedicated cable car taking guests to the large open air baths at the river’s edge below adds another unique element, with the overall experience augmented by the general high quality of the ryokan itself; while the buildings and rooms are beginning to show a bit of their age, the overall facilities and services are still very much reflective of a luxury stay. This is a wonderful luxury ryokan at an incredible location, a rare combination that is not always easy to find.

Meals are O.K., but it's an unexplored region, so you shouldn't expect too much cooking level.

• Verified traveler (8/5): 良い！ - 仲居さんの接客がとても良く料理は美味しかったので、全体的にはとても満足でしたが、何点か気になるところもありました。1つは、エレベーターが無いので地下2階のお風呂から地上2階のお部屋まで上るとかなり疲れてしまう点(高齢者の方も多いと思うのでエレベーターを設置した方が良いと思う)と、露天風呂の温度が38度くらいなので冬はとても寒いのが気になりました。可能であれば冬は加熱した方が良いのではないかと思いました。全体的にはとても良かったです。
• KI-NRT (8/5): Surprisingly good, especially given its remote (and beautiful) location - We stayed for 2 nights at Hotel Iyaonsen, and were impressed by the level of service, the food offerings, the condition of the room and especially the Onsen (natural hot springs) quality down in the valley (more on that in a moment.) We were already expecting it to be remotely situated with incredible valley/mountain views, and on that (and all other) fronts, our hopes and expectations were more than met. As other reviewers have already noted, the drive to Hotel Iyaonsen - while not exactly a harrowing experience - is one that requires alertness... the road is barely wide enough for one vehicle, and if you spot a car approaching from the opposite direction, one of the drivers will have to back up to an area where there's sufficient width in the road for both cars to slide past one another. It's also very twisty - so much so, that it's really not practical to be barreling down the mountain pass in any case. Thankfully, there are mirrors placed at the corners of each sharp turn so that drivers are able to see oncoming traffic ahead of time. In my mind, this added to the charm of being somewhere so remote, even if it's a bit of a hassle to get there. We stayed in a room called "Tamayura" (Room #505, to be exact), which is the top room at the property. It's a corner room located on the top floor, and has an open-air outdoor Onsen bath to boot. Measuring 47m², it pales in comparison to highest category rooms at other ryokans we've stayed at, but the layout made it feel more spacious than its measurements would suggest. Tamayura had a living room, a smaller area where you can enjoy the Valley view, and a separate sleeping area.... none of them were segregated by walls, which added to the airy feel but might bother some guests accustomed to having distinctly separate living/sleeping areas. While it's Japanese in design and decor, it was more modern than traditional. The room had an earthly tone and allowed an abundance of natural light to enter, making it seem fresh and new. The Onsen and shower were located on the deck, and exposed to the elements. Now, I am used to having an open-air Onsen bath (in fact, in most cases I prefer it), but also having to shower outside (before getting into the Onsen) could be painful if it was in the dead of winter. The other drawback has to do with the in-room Onsen itself - it's not of the free-flowing variety; you have to fill it up from scratch each time you bathe. While it probably takes no more than 20 minutes for the bath to fill up, you might spend a bit more time regulating the temperature (by turning either the cold or hot water tap) until it's just right for you. Thankfully, this is made up by the awesome Onsen down in the valley. There is a cable car that shuttles (paying) guests to and from the bottom of the Valley, where there are separate men/women communal Onsen baths. There are also baths that you can rent privately (at extra cost.) All of them were amazing - the hot springs were soft, supple, slippery and full of natural minerals... we could just feel the hot springs-ness of the bath. All along, we were able to enjoy views of the river that flows right in front of the Onsen. Truly an experience that we will cherish. We loved our first dinner at Iyaonsen; the chef did a wonderful job focusing on local ingredients and recipes (or, if not practical, ingredients from elsewhere near Shikoku island.) We were blown away the salt-grilled "Amago," a trout-based fish that's specific to parts of Japan and a major delicacy. It was full of flavor, not fishy at all (which is not easy for a river fish), soft but plump, and edible from head to tail. We were also treated to local pork, Iya-style Soba noodles that uses 100% pure buckwheat flour (which is very uncommon elsewhere in Japan) and Pike Conger from the Naruto area. The second dinner was less impressive - I suspect that the vast majority of guests (mostly Japanese, I suspect) are merely passing by and stay no more than one night. Therefore, for outliers like us they generally may not have an abundance of Plan B options to serve. For instance, instead of rice at the end (well, just before dessert), they served us Udon noodles, which is fine. Except that it tasted like any frozen Udon that you can purchase in a Supermarket. When I asked them what type of Udon it was, the waiter disappeared into the kitchen to inquire with the staff, came back, and told us it was "Sanuki Udon." No... we know Sanuki Udon, and it was nothing like what we had just enjoyed in Kagawa Prefecture, both in terms of style as well as overall quality. On the positive side, for the traditional "Sashimi" course offering, they elected to offer us raw local Konjac as well as raw Yuba Tofu (which is made with a kind of soy milk that's usually used to make Yuba Tofu skin, if that makes any sense!) They were consumed with soy sauce and wasabi, just like Sashimi. Well, to say we were impressed would be a major understatement; they were both sublime! For us, it's just as memorable to have unique items that offer us sensations that we haven't experienced before. On that front, Iyaonsen definitely succeeded. For people that are looking to visit a beautiful place in Japan that's really off the beaten path, but still desire comfortable accommodations and good food, we highly recommend Iya Valley and Hotel Iyaonsen. To get around, however, we also strongly suggest that you rent a car and drive, as all of the tourist sites (aside from the Peeing Boy statue) are in no way within walking distance, and we never saw a single bus during our time in the area.

• Rastnim (10/5): Authentic Japanese experience in stunning nature - We decided to splurge on this hotel during our visit to Shikoku as it is such an exceptional location and experience - we were very glad we did. The surrounding Iya Valley is absolutely incredibly stunning. This property is within walking distance of the famous Pissing Boy statue, about 5 minutes’ walk. The roads to reach this hotel are certainly interesting but great fun to drive. The property is truly a Japanese hotel built for Japanese tourists and as such doesn’t have any Western comforts as such. Those staying should be aware although luxury, it isn’t luxury to the standard of western hotels as that’s not who it’s aimed at! The rooms are traditional with tatami floors and futon mattresses. Rooms have a toilet but no shower. To wash men and women have separate communal baths - you must be naked to go in - no getting out of it! The communal baths have small vanity units around the outside with shampoo and soap and shower heads. The stools are very small and not easy for tall foreigners. The onsen itself is an experience! It sits at the bottom of the valley and is only accessible by a very rickety funicular tram that goes almost vertically downwards and takes around 2 minutes one way. If you miss it you might be waiting a while for it to come back up! It is operated by the riders themselves. The onsen has a lovely view looking out over the river and surrounding valley. Again, you must be naked. It can take some getting used to but when you see the ease and comfort of the Japanese and their disregard for how bodies differ you will be at ease quickly. I found the Japanese we’re keen to find out what two naked westerners were doing in this remote onsen and wanted to talk. It was a really lovely experience. Recommend the kaiseki meal served here. Food is very good but again not tailored to western tastes (as it shouldn’t be!). I recommend embracing it as the western breakfast for example didn’t look great. I struggled as a vegetarian, I advised them in advance but they still served me chicken at dinner. When I said I don’t eat chicken they brought me beef! Eventually they understood although I had to eat some fish so as not to go hungry! There’s nowhere else to eat anywhere nearby and roads too hazardous to do at night. Once here there’s nothing much to do except kick back and absorb the whole experience.

We were there for two days over Christmas and would have loved to stay longer. The onsen is peaceful and offer great views over the river and the meals were wonderful. We very stupidly managed to leave our passports behind and the hotel staff quickly arranged a courier to our next hotel in Osaka. They were so helpful and nice and we can't thank them enough.
• suesE2149AT (10/5): Great food, great view, great onsen -- worth every penny! - Once we found out about an onsen hotel in the middle of the "hidden valley" of Iya, where one must take a cable car to descend to an outdoor bath, we knew we had to try it. The place certainly did not disappoint. We only had our JR Rail Passes and did not rent a car, so we asked for a (free) shuttle pick-up. During the 30-minute ride to the hotel, the driver told us about the area and even stopped to show us some truly Instagram-worthy scenery. (If you easily get car sick, however, you SHOULD be prepared; the road is extremely narrow and curvy.) Once at the hotel, we thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor bath, which can only be reached by cable car. Even though the hot springs' temperature is relatively low, it kept us warm during the 5-minute ascent back to the hotel. And the view was absolutely stunning. Dinner and breakfast were to die for. The rooms, while pretty small, were tastefully decorated with modern amenities and were very clean and comfortable. Do sign up for the free nighttime Vine Bridge viewing tour. Without a doubt, you'll end up with some gorgeous photos! It's not an inexpensive hotel, but we felt that the experience was magical. Highly recommended!

• seanliutravel (10/5): The jewel of accommodation in Iya Valley area - There are so many great things about this hotel. For a starter, it's transportation. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service every morning from the hotel and every afternoon from the Oboke station. The pick-up and drop-off time are tailored to meet JR train timetable either southbound or northbound, so you don't have to worry about it. The driver that day, Okamoto-san, is friendly and he is also capable of communicating in English. During the drive, he stopped by one of the most anticipated attractions here, Hi-no-Ji Valley, for us to have some photo opportunities at this amazingly magnificent spot before heading to the hotel. The staff in the hotel, including receptionists, waitresses, servicemen, are all polite and trying to give you the best accommodation experience you may have. Most of the people who chose this hotel as their accommodation option are mostly aiming for its open-air hot spa accessed by cable car, and I am no exception. You need to take a 5 minutes cable car ride from the hotel down to the Iya River with a slope of 42 degrees and 175 meters difference in elevation. This is quite an unforgettable experience as you can freely enjoy the ride while viewing the panoramic view of the Iya Valley. The open-air hot springs is quite special and unique. Since it's only 38 degrees, you can enjoy it for quite a long time without feeling too hot or uncomfortable. The water directly comes from the origin and flows to the river, and it's quite an enjoyment to stay in the water and relax for quite some time, simmering your body in its silky texture of water, viewing the stunning views of Iya River. Indoor hot springs operate 24 hours, so you can freely take a shower and soak in hot water anytime you like with complimentary drinks to quench your thirst. The hotel offers a set dinner in the evening and semi-buffet type breakfast in the morning. Here, you can taste numerous local Shikoku cuisines which are difficult to find in other areas of Japan. Although they may not be so abundant in quantity, the flavor is there and you will definitely enjoy the varieties of dishes they can offer. We stayed here for two nights, and the set dinners for both days are totally different at different restaurants, which is another great stuff worth compliment. We stayed in room #315, and along with room #316, are two rooms with limited and blocked views under a reduced room rate. The hotel website also marks this notice and you can make your decision based on your preferences. My wife and I definitely had a great time here in Hotel Iyaonsen and we do recommend this hotel to travelers who visit Iya area.

• Sydneyresident (10/5): Really worth the splurge - It was going to be the highlight of our Shishoku trip and it didn't disappoint. The outdoor onsens at the bottom of the valley were superb - we went at 7am and each had the male/female onsen to ourselves. The outdoor onsen in our room provided a different experience - you can see the morning mist drifting across the mountain tops. Dinner consisted of a range of seasonal local produce (including the fish ayu, as we visited in May) beautifully cooked and elegantly presented. We were worried about access to the hotel - but really the drive was easy enough. The roads were narrow and windy in some places but not steep. There were mirrors everywhere, and we drove slowly and felt very safe. The Iya Valley area is beautiful.

• mmichaelchong (10/5): Beautiful Memories at Iya Onsen - Our family of 4 adults stayed 1 night on 17 April at the 505 suite. Wanted 2 nights , but they were fully booked. Arrived at the rustic Oboke station at 3.45 pm from Tokyo and the hotel transport was waiting for us with a greeting board. The moment we stepped into our room , we loved it with the outdoor bath , beautiful scenery facing the misty mountains especially the massage chair which we took turns to sink into accompanied by great Bosch sound system. A word of caution though about the the attached bath - the mosaic used to paved it has shape edges esp where the step are. Be careful not to let it cut your bottom or the heel and ankle of your foot. We had many memorable dips with hot water coming direct from the spring. There is no enclosed bathroom , it is situated together next to the tub in the open. Alto, it is spring , still quite cold , esp with the wind blowing. The trick is to adjust the water at the correct temp to clean yourself before jumping straight into the bath with the hot spring water, otherwise you will be frozen. Both the dinner and the breakfast was great. We were served the traditional "Kaisek" multi-course dinner . Ensure you do not miss the 1 hour night tour provided by the hotel . The illumination of lights was breathtaking. If you are lucky , may spot some wild animal in their natural habitat. We saw a fairly big deer just beside the road foraging for food and what look like a wolf, but not so sure if it was. Regretted not being sufficiently alert to take a video or picture of it. Would like to come back for a longer stay. Michael Chong
• JJB (10/5): Wonderful experience - even without your own wheels - Everything is excellent from service, food, onsen to shopping options at the little inhouse outlet. Most fellow travellors would have given their views. I just wish to add that even without your own wheels, and without using the infrequent shuttle of the Hotel, we managed to make use of the public bus to and from Hotel to the bridge and the gorge boat trip. You need a bit of planning and searching in advance as the timetable of the buses does change over different seasons. I got mine through "iyatime", which is even more updated than the official webpage of the bus company. We stayed in a room on the 5/F with indoor bath and enjoyed it very much. To me it's worth the extra you pay for staying in the place. Allow at least 1.5 hour for dinner if you wish to join the free night tour to the bridge, which departs at 8pm.

Love the location surrounded by valleys n mountains, a great place to relax n explore the beauty of Iya Valley. It is quite a novelty to go to the outdoor onsen via their small cable car😊 Staff were nice and helpful too! Great variety in the meals they served as well. They have a shuttle van to pick and send you to the train station but limited to once a day though. It was very nice of the hotel to offer a night treat to the kazurabashi vine bridge to see the illumination, thank you!

• 171eva (10/5): Hidden getaway. Breathtaking scenery. - Hotel Iya Onsen is surrounded by misty mountains and the breathtaking scenery of Iya Valley. The room was very clean and beautiful, combining traditional Japanese and modern style. The rotenburo(outdoor spa) is beside a river. You can sit in the bath or the terrace beside it, and unplug yourself in peace. If you are visiting Japan I highly recommend this hidden getaway of Japan not so far from Kyoto or Osaka. We stayed at Hotel Iya Onsen for one night in September. We took a train from Takamatsu to Oboke. Upon arrival, a friendly shuttle driver with a welcome sign was waiting for us. If you want to use the shuttle which runs once a day from Oboke to the hotel, make sure you book it beforehand. The ride was about 30min and he stopped once at a viewing point so that you could take pictures. It was lightly raining and the Iya vally was surrounded by deep green forest covered with mist. We were already impressed with the beauty of the area before arriving at the hotel. Our room(#305) was newly renovated and had a beautiful private outdoor bath and balcony. It was spacious and clean. It had an excellent Bose sound system, massage chair, a selection of tea and coffee, treats, and cute traditional Japanese toys to play with. The bath is on the balcony with a shower and washing area beside the tub. The tub was big and deep. We loved this room and private bath so much. Not only was it peaceful to sit in the tub and just look at the misty mountains from the balcony, it was quiet except the nature outside-what you heard were birds and cicadas chirping. We didn’t want to move but decided to go down to rotenburo before dinner. The rotenburo was beside a river. You take a self-operated cable car from the hotel down to the river. It had a very nice view to the river and it was thrilling going down the steep hill. The water temperature was lower than a usual onsen so if you don’t like hot onsen, it will work for you. For me, the water could be a bit hotter. The dinner was at the beautiful dining lounge and we had “Tokusen Kaiseki” course menu. They use a lot of local products. It was unique and delicious, especially Sudachi Ayu shio yaki(fish) and Awa Gyu Teppan yaki(beef). The staff was very friendly and attentive. They explained the entire course menu each time they served. It was served in a timely manner and we had a very relaxing dinner. We saw many people at the dinner and I was sure it was fully booked, but our room was very quiet and peaceful. We took a bath again in our room with wine glasses in our hand, looking out at the pitch-dark forest and hearing insects chirping. It was a getaway from reality and peaceful moment. The breakfast was at the same dining lounge. This time we could see the breathtaking view of the surrounding misty mountains and river from the windows. We were originally sat at a table away from the window view but the staff kindly asked us to move by the window to enjoy the magnificent view when the last breakfast group had left. It was very thoughtful and we enjoyed the gorgeous view of valley while eating delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we decided to go down to sit at the terrace by the rotenburo. The combination of rocky river rapids, the bridge (heard sometimes used by monkeys), and the misty mountains were so precious. My husband sat there for thirty minutes closed his eyes, unplugged himself. It was relaxing and a peaceful Zen moment. Instead of taking the 9:50am hotel shuttle back to Oboke station, we decided to stay longer and appreciate the Iya until check out(11am). The staff helped us to reschedule and order a taxi so that we could make a visit to Kazurabashi(20min away) and then to the station. We were very happy with our decision because Kazurabashi was worth visiting. We wished we could stay one more night at Hotel Iya Onsen. The hotel may have been full but somehow we managed to avoid the crowd and had a peaceful private time. Every minute we spent here was so special and memorable. I hope people who visit Japan can find this hidden gem of Japan. I highly recommend to plan ahead of time and book the room we stayed(#305) or the rooms with private bath. It will give you more flexibility and your stay will be a whole different level of relaxation.
• BigTA (10/5): Wonderful place - I was fortunate to get a room for Saturday-Monday at the end of August not very far in advance. It might have been the last room available. Would recommend booking early. The views and location are spectacular. The rooms are what you would expect from a high-end ryokan. It's a short walk from the "peeing boy" statue, but otherwise you need to rent a car to get around this area. Took one trip down on the cable car to the rotemburo by the river. It was very relaxing. The food was also great. Dinner the second night was one of the best meals I've ever had in Japan.
• Kit Ying (10/5): Good view and location, spacious room - Good view and location. The room is spacious with private onsen and massage chair. They invite us to join free night trip to Iya bridge. It is beautiful. The public onsen is good but the outside onsen (by cable car) is not recommended.
• ChinLa (10/5): Nice view and nice onsen - I stayed in one of their Japanese style rooms (with private bathroom) for 2 nights in mid April. I initially wanted one of the rooms with open air bath, and attempted to make a reservation 3 months in advance, but they were booked out. I had to reschedule my itinerary so that I can stayed in a room with at least private bath (Make sure that you book far in advance to get the room that you like). I booked on Agoda and paid about 580AUD per night for 1 person. I think the price was reasonable for the type of room the meals and the onsen. I drove to the hotel from Okayama. The drive (across the Seto sea as well as route 45 and 32) was very nice and interesting, but was tiring (I drove alone). The amount of tolls charge were also very expensive (I paid about 20000¥ of toll in total). May be it would be cheaper to catch public transport to somewhere closer or to Oboke station and rent a car from there. I also drove the route 439 between the hotel and the Okuiya Niju Kazura Bashi vine bridge. This one was particularly even more difficult and tiring. I have more than 10 years of driving experience, but still found this route challenging as I was not used to driving on the very narrow and bend road. (I scratched my rental car on route 439 while reversing to give way to a large truck. Luckily I had the top insurance cover for accident, so I didn’t have to pay for the damage) The view from the room was amazing with the lush green vegetation on the mountain, the deep gorge, the river, and the clouds out side the window in the morning. The bath room also had excellent view of the mountain. The room had a massage chair, a stereo and a few relaxation music CDs. They were perfect for resting. I didn’t have onsen in my room, but their public baths were nice. The 2 public baths were next to the river, which offered great view. For each bath, the time assigned of each gender were alternated depending on the time of the day. (Make sure that you check carefully before entering).The water had Sulphur content so the smell wasn’t very nice, but the skin felt really smooth after bathing. The cable car ride to and from the hot spring was fun. Both breakfast and dinner were served in the restaurant. The meals were well presented, but were not the best kaiseki. May be I was so used to private dinning during my stays in a number of ryokans that I found eating in the busy dinning hall with a few dozens of other guests just spoiled my relaxing time. Even though the staff at the restaurant couldn’t speak English, they were really nice. A lady gave me an English menu when she found out that I’m not Japanese. In summary, I really liked the onsen, the room and the surrounding scenery. The dinning experience can be improved. I will definitely come back when I have a chance.
• Isaac (8/5): Very good but not the best - The location is good. Hot springs are nice. Good food and staff. However it is not the best onsen i have stayed. The main issue is missing a nice place for people to take rest after the bath. Thats very important for a perfect onsen.
• Verified traveler (8/5): Unique place in a beautiful setting - We stayed at the Iya Onsen for one night in May. We took a taxi from Oboke Station as our arrival time did not align with the daily hotel shuttle which leaves at 4:10pm. The hotel is set in a remote area and the room had a stunning view of the forested mountains. We especially enjoyed taking a hot spring bath in our private wooden tub on our balcony overlooking the mountains, and the keiseki dinner which was both delicious and interesting. The hotel has a small gift shop that sells nice products, many made locally in the Iya area. The cable car down to the river where the public hot spring baths are located was fun, but we were not as impressed with the baths compared to other onsen hotels we stayed at. We scheduled a private yoga class with Aki at Yama Yoga which was absolutely fantastic. She and her husband are both very knowledgeable about the area and meeting them was a highlight of our trip.
• jution (10/5): Gateway to the Japanese Shangri-La - I really love the location of this hotel. We stayed there in April in the middle of the lushness of spring. All we can see from our room (obviously facing the mountain side) was green. So you have to ask for mountain side, otherwise you might be disappointed. Our room has a western style bed but the lounge is tatami settling. The bath is outside on the balcony - that’s where the shower is too so it can be a bit cold. The rate comes with breakfast (western or Japanese option) and dinner which is nice, although portions are big. We had to bail out of our last few dishes for dinner! The onsen is down the valley by the river. You have to take the hotel cable car down. If you can, try the private onsen - really peaceful to have the onsen to yourself with the nice scenery overlooking your onsen. The only potential downside to this hotel is that it’s not in the town area so you might have to spend a little bit on the taxi. But the hotel has a shuttle (I think twice a day) to the train station. If you are not planning to do much and just enjoy nature, this shouldn’t be a problem. We stayed here for 2 nights. My only regret is not staying longer. I will be planning to go back again - hopefully in the not-so-distant future.

The location is very scenic and the cable car to the open air hot springs makes it very unique. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic and beautifully presented. Our room had a balcony which allowed us a spectacular view of the night sky and access to birdsong in the early morning. In the morning, we saw monkeys and birds as we waited for the first cable car. The hotel is pricey but the experience provided is special and I rate this highly for those looking for something unique.

• 5ellen (10/5): Extra Relaxing Area - The hotel is a bit remote. Most remote areas are wonderful. If you are a city driver, extra attention when driving as some roads are narrow. We love the onsen and autumn here. We enjoyed the cable car operator inviting us feeding the birds. It was extra fun moment to us too. So sweet of the hotel creating this experience. Too bad there was no lift for luggage. Unlike to in bound traveller, we got big luggage as we were from other parts of the world. So be prepared with light ones. You may not want to hotel staffs carrying such heavy items up.
• docmark74 (10/5): Amazing ryokan hotel in a secluded spot - The drive to the hotel wasn't for the faint hearted, especially as we were travelling in winter and night had fallen. I presume it will be very difficult to get there without your own transport. The hotel was amazing. We stayed in a traditional room with an outdoor bath. Room was spacious but yet, cosy for the 4 of us. We initially wondered how we were going to walk out in the cold to get to the bathtub but we did and it's really something having a bath in the open in winter and looking out into the valley covered with clouds. The light snowfall outside just added more to the whole winter setting. We had our multi-course meals in the restaurant. Food was so beautifully prepared and delicious. Service was impeccable and although English wasn't very well spoken throughout the hotel, the service staff kept trying and trying so hard to understand us and cater to all our requests - amazing. We tried the private onsen at the valley floor - small but intimate, and again the amazing views. Totally recommend this hotel for anyone visiting the Iya Valley.

• Bente (10/5): Night in an onsen - We arrived at two PM and had a cup of coffee, until our room was ready. All staff were very helpful and gave us a perfect stay. After bathing and dinner, we had an excursion to de vine bridge -a very beautiful tour.
• Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel is marvellous - it was understandably why they charge so much. He upkeep of the place requires that. The view was undeniably amazing, and the food was fantastic.
• Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing outdoor onsen. Delicious kaiseki dinner. - Wonderful service. Nice room with mountain view. Dinner and breakfast was great. Room was very comfortable with a massage chair even!
• Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel but difficult to get there - The hotel is situated at the top of the hill so you better drive to get there. The road is one way route so be prepared to reverse to allow the other car to pass through! The hotel room is large and clean (I chose the room with open bath and mountain view). The onsen facility is located down the hill so you need to take a cable car down to get there (the whole journey is few mins only) - it's an interesting experience but there is no bath facility at the onsen so make sure you take a shower in your room or the bath facilities at the first floor before you go. The onsen temp is not hot so can still so it in summer. The dinner and breakfast are a bit disappointed - the food was tasty but was expected to have at least sashimi and sushi, and wagyu beef for dinner with the price paid but not included. The check out time is 11am - I requested for late check out at noon time because of illness but was surprised they only allowed for extra 10 mins (so I need to check out at 11:10am!)
