Guest Reviews
- David (6/5): - friendly welcome
Room very basic, poorly decorated. shower basic
Needs refurbishment
Breakfast basic quality
Would not recommend staying here
- Mjh (10/5): Beautiful - What a beautiful place and quirky hotel, owner was so lovely, loved it here
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Very convenient and very reasonable priced
- Susan (6/5): - Very old fashioned not very comfortable but it was clean and there was private parking
- Zhikang (10/5): Great hotel you can trust - Nice hotel, great service, we all love the hot and delicious breakfast included in the room!
- Paul (2/5): Never Again! - Booked the wrong room due to the photos on the website being incorrect but apparently it was my fault! Total shock when we were shown the room, nearly went straight back home. Room 4 was/is past tired, dangerous extension lead making a crackling noise when we plugged the old kettle in, absolute fire hazard! Tv cable ran under the front of the sink, socket also under the sink! The toilet had the most disgusting smell and the shower screen broke/dirty. The whole occasion was terrible and never again, couldn’t even face breakfast. We have stayed before and room 5 was acceptable and yes we know it’s not 5 star establishment but room 4 needs closing for good. We were looking forward to our return visit but will give The Copper Kettle a massive swerve for our next visit to Kirby Lonsdale. Website needs changing or some poor sod will get the same room. Absolutely gutted to leave such a negative review
- Clara (8/5): - Albeit slightly dated, really good for the price, the whole place could probably do with an overhaul but I'd rather have it like it is at the current price, the sheets, towels etc were spotless . Lovely couple and good breakfast. Would stay again.
- Robert (8/5): - Room was a loft conversion so a bit awkward with low ceilings, only a skylight and a very small bathroom. But everything worked, bed was comfortable.
Owner very friendly and helpful, food excellent, great location in the middle of town. Very good value overall.
- Francis (10/5): - Just really friendly, and accommodating
- Clarence (10/5): - Clean and spacious.
- Earl (10/5): Value for Money! 😄 - This was a lovely place to stay and incredible value for money. This is not a 5* hotel but it has a lovely charm and a is ran by a hardworking, lovely couple. A room with breakfast included for the price you are paying is amazing. Me and my wife enjoyed our breakfast and even catered for me (vegetarian). Highly recommend! Will stay here again.
- Emma (6/5): - As other reviews state, the place is a bit tired and dated. But for the money you can't complain. Generous breakfast included in the price was a bonus
My room would have benefited from a shade or cover on the skylight and the advertised parking wasn't available so had to park in a public car park. Not a problem for an overnight stay but would have been different if staying longer.
- Joanne (2/5): - Stayed one night in Room 5 and sadly won’t be returning. The room was very poorly maintained and had a strong, unpleasant smell of old cooking oil that seemed to linger throughout the entire property. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, and the bedding had visible stains.
The bathroom was particularly concerning — loose floorboards made it feel unsafe to walk on, there was tape over a broken electric shower (which seemed highly dangerous), and the ceiling light fitting had no cover at all. Overall, the room felt dirty, musty, and neglected.
I even tried to rebook elsewhere during my stay, but unfortunately everywhere was full, otherwise I would have left. I didn’t stay for breakfast as I couldn’t imagine what the kitchen conditions might be like given the state of the room.
It’s a real shame to leave such negative feedback, especially as the building itself is quirky and full of potential. However, cleanliness and guest safety should be a minimum standard — even for budget accommodation. I hope this review helps others make an informed choice
- Andrew (8/5): - lovely hosts, execellent breakfast
- Ravina (10/5): - Lovely host who clearly knew about hospitality. I loved the fresh milk and the car parking spot which wasn’t easy in this town. Great location
- Michelle (4/5): - Though it was neat to say we stayed in a hotel from the 1600s. The room smelled of mildew and the private bath was outside the room and smelled of urine
- Andrew (8/5): - Very friendly staff and very helpful. The vegan cooked breakfast was very good.
- Guntis (8/5): Just what I wanted - I stayed at the Copper Kettle because it was a relatively short drive to the Howgills where I wanted to do some walking. I thought the price fo rmy stay was very reasonable and included breakfast (what I really wanted) and a packed lunch. The double room was spacious although the en-suite was a bit cramped but it was okay for me.
The accommodation met all my requirements and I would have no hesitation in staying here in the future.
- Andrew (6/5): - The people running the BB was really nice, breakfast lovely but the bathroom was very scruffy and needed a refurb but the room it self was good.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Lovely guesthouse and inn. Was a great stop for a night before the windmere swim marathon. Really appreciate that breakfast is included and very gracious host.
- SIN PENG (10/5): - Great breakfast and hospitable couple
- Mandy (8/5): - After spending 7.5 hours walking up Mount Whernside, I was looking forward to a hot meal and a comfortable bed; and that's just what I got! Cotton sheets and soft white fluffy towels were appreciated.Pamela was very welcoming and friendly. Only 2* accommodation but that was all that was required, therefore can't fault it; achieving my Mountain walk was my main aim! 💪excellent coffee in the morning! ☕😁 xx
- Miss Rosemary (8/5): Weekend trip - Ignore the reviews. Yes it's a 2 star hotel. And Yes it needs work doing to it. It was like a hotel that time forgot. Breakfast was basic full English. I dont eat meat so wasnt a problem I had eggs on toast and fruit if i wanted it.
We found it charming, had character. The couple were lovely. Mrs Gamble couldn't do enough. Was like being at my Grandma's house. Thank you Mr and Mrs Gamble
- Ian (4/5): - .
- Rufus (10/5): - A lovely warm welcome at this characterful and fairly priced institution.
- shane (2/5): I wouldn’t stay here if I was homeless - I can dribble harder than the shower
The wall paper is coming off in the bath room,
The bed is soft in places and solid in others
It looks so run down,
Room was generally dirty
I fell like it’s clutching at straws to stay open they should call it a day
I slept on top of the covers as I didn’t want to lift them up
The locals all laughed when we said that’s where we are staying,
- Edwin (2/5): - Goodness me the property is far too old to be in use . This needs to be addressed urgently.
- Debra (6/5): - Well the worst reviews were true.
It was like the 50’s.
I actually felt sorry for the couple has it needs a lot of money spending on it.
The wall near the window was wet with a covering of some sort of plastic wall paper on it. The whole place is very dated.
The heating was an electric fire.
Glad we was only staying one night has I would not stayed another night!
Plus side bedding was clean and breakfast was ok and the lady was lovely.
- Susan (10/5): - The property has its own parking. The couple who own The Copper Kettle are so helpful. The bed was so comfy. Great price lovely breakfast. Would stay again.
- Tracey (6/5): One night stay - Stopped off for one night on our way to Scotland. The room was basic, comfortable bed, nice breakfast. Pete and Pamela were very helpful and really nice people.
- Fatin (10/5): - The lady staff was so helpful and kind. She showed us where to park our car safely and gave her best service during our stay. She brought a cup of milk up to our room so that we could have a hot chocolate or coffee before bed. And we love the breakfast too. We can choose what would we have for the breakfast too and they were really good! The Copper Kettle is bed and breakfast. Definitely would come again.
- ALAN (10/5): Copper Ketttle excellent - The hostess was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast
- Colin (8/5): Cute, quirky and convenient - Chose the property as a base while in Kirkby Lonsdale meeting friends for an occasion. Very affordable accommodation right in the centre of the town and provides all required for a pleasant stay. The lady who owns the place is really lovely, efficient and friendly. The room was a good size and clean with amenities in good order. The ensuite toilet/shower a bonus too, however the shower wasnt very powerful it didn't imlact my stay in any way. Breakfast is table service and offers all thats needed to start the day. Very pleasant overall and would definitely consider returning again
- Josephine (6/5): - Owners were welcoming
- Russell (6/5): Not great - Room was damp
- Matthew (10/5): - This property is 400 years old, it's very old fashioned.
We had a 3 night stay at the Copper Kettle and we absolutely loved it!
The room was very comfortable, although a little frayed here & there.
Shower was great, breakfast each morning was great.
We also took advantage of the 3 course meal one evening (available to guests only) & for the money was great value.
Above all that, the proprietors were wonderfully welcoming & friendly.
They let us park our motorcycle in the outbuilding for safety.
We would definitely come back again!
- Philip (6/5): - The property is in a poor state of repair but the bed was comfy, the shower was warm, the breakfast was nice and the lady was friendly. Kirkby Lonsdale was a nice town in a beautiful area and the Ingleton Waterfalls trail nearby was breathtaking.
- Jane (10/5): - Lovely couple ...made us feel welcome lovely lady with old time values...property is very very retro ..it defently felt like be back at my nanas house but you also get what you pay for ..it was a very interesting stay and would definitely go back for the breakfast 😋
- Pat (10/5): - Enjoyed. Very accommodating hosts. Very good food and very low cost. 3 course guest menu needs a vegetarian option.
- Ann (8/5): - The property is was built in the 1600 and now a little bit tied
The owners were lovely
And the food was good
- Verified traveler (6/5): Review - friendly welcome, and we enjoyed our stay.
- Jacob (6/5): - We had the attic room in the hotel, shame that there was no blind over the sky light as we was awoken at 5:30am, other than that the owners were very nice and the breakfast was very good, property is in need of renovation however the room was clean and bed was comfy
- Verified traveler (2/5): Needs inspecting - I'm sorry to write this review, but the place needs shutting down, gutting, and bringing up to some sort of standard.
It's run by an elderly couple, and yes, the place is old, but that's no excuse for filthy carpets, an en-suite bathroom whose carpet stunk of urine and overpowered the whole bedroom too. Windows had to be propped open with magazines, some of the window panes were missing and had been taped up. There was mould in the shower, the majority of the walls were stained with damp patches and the decor had been patched up over numerous decades. I could go on and on. The bed linen was clean, but I daren't look under it.
The breakfast was OK, but when you look at the rest of the place, you really didn't feel like eating it, maybe the kitchen was of the same standard?.
It's such a shame, because the lady was quite nice, I didn't see her husband who was the cook, but could hear him shouting at his wife in the kitchen.
As soon as we got there we wanted to leave, but we were committed, and being English, didn't like to complain.
Having read all the other reviews, we were prepared to give the place a try, as some of them were quite good, why I don't know?.
I'm sorry to the owners, but I really think it's time to throw in the towel, and retire.
- Alex (10/5): - Lovely town, great facilities the hotel is old, something are dated, great lady host.
- Graham (8/5): Quirky but nice - Whether you like it at the Copper Kettle will depend on your expectations. Expect something old-fashioned, quirky and in need of some attention in places and you'll enjoy your stay. Very good breakfast and attentive service.
- Neil (6/5): - Lovely owners. I was working away and stayed in the copper kettle, as I was out before breakfast started the very kind owners made me and my colleague a little packed lunch to take with us which was such a lovely little touch. We had a comfortable stay although the room is very outdated but that didn’t bother us too much.
- Angus (6/5): - The property is old and quite dated but friendly and very good value with parking
- Keith (10/5): Great value for money. - Our hosts were great. They upgraded us to a bigger room as they had the space. The food was really good and plenty of it at fantastic prices. Our room had an electric fire which was very useful as the weather was cold for June. Overall it was an old quirky character full property with really friendly owners. We would come again if in the area.
- Lyndon (6/5): Very run down - You get what you pay for.
- Michael (10/5): Great location - Run by a lovely couple who were really helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Room spacious and clean. Good breakfast and great location to the shops and pub and small walk to devil's bridge
- jacqueline (2/5): Worst place ever stayed in! - Spent one night here and couldn’t wait to get out! Didn’t even bother staying for breakfast. Was in an attic room where we had to duck to get in. Being only 5ft myself you can imagine how low it was hence my husband banging his head quite badly! The room was mouldy and smelly. The electrics looked very dodgy so didn’t dare use tv or kettle. Tho couldn’t have had a coffee anyway as the milk was in a jug left out overnight as there was no fridge. You can imagine what it looked like in the morning. The skylight had no blind so as soon as it became light we were woken up. This not being a bad thing in the end so we could leave asap!
- Paul (10/5): - Great service by the hosts, nothing to much trouble.
- Michael (6/5): - Querkie little hotel with traditional inn keepers. Great location in town near good food and facing artisan butcher. A little tired but did the job.
- Soo (8/5): - The property is dated but that is its charm. I really felt at home at the Copper Kettle. Service was superb.
- Roy (6/5): - Great location and very friendly hosts
- ingrid (6/5): - The hospitality at The Copper Kettle is great, as is the breakfast. Being an 'older' building the accommodation is not for the 'feint hearted' amongst you who enjoy some luxury. The amenities are in need of some refurbishment which the owners try hard to keep up, however it is ideal for serious walkers just wanting to get their heads down after a hard days trek and after a few bevvies and food at the local pub.
- Anthony (10/5): - As a group of friends we have stopped here every year, its not for everyone and some reviews o have read have been unfair.
The building is around 17th century, so thats unique on its own.
Perfect location, the breakfast has always been good and the lady who runs it with her husband are friendly and knowledgeable.
Our room was comfortable, dont expect the Ritz, its fantastic value, more money to spend on over priced meals in the local pubs.
6 of us stopped no complaints. We all get to stop in the same place so perfect.
- Jane (8/5): Enjoyable stay - Friendly, helpful owners who greeted us and showed us where to park. Very central location in a beautiful town near countryside. Super breakfast with lovely porridge, full English, and extra coffee. Dated decor but for the price and experience excellent value.
- John (6/5): - Bed was very uncomfortable a dip in it furniture was very basic antiquated could do with a makeover but other than that enjoyed trip and run by nice couple
- Karen (8/5): Quaint, old fashioned pub - Not the best but very good value for money. The hosts were lovely and the food was excellent. We would definitely book again for an overnight stay
- Ian (2/5): - Very very outdated and in poor state of repair , we had room No 5 ,, to many complaints to list , whole establishment had an aroma of burnt chip fat , which matched the food on offer , how it gets any stars is a wonder
- Nicholas (8/5): Copper Kettle guest house - Cheap 2* we had a great 2 night stay. It was like staying with your Nan, outdated but clean. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. Very tasty full english breakfasts. Situated in the centre of Kirby Lonsdale, so good location for wandering around this small market town and devils bridge
- Wendy (10/5): - Very dated but quirky. Owners lovely
- David (8/5): - A really nice little quirky hotel in stunning countryside. Never visited this area before but will definitely be coming back someday it is amazing.
- Kimberley (4/5): - I like the fact that the property is in the centre of Kirby Lonsdale but the property is very outdated with old and dirty fixtures and fittings. I was greeted by the landlady who was friendly enough but abrupt. My room was light and airy but hadnt been hoovered. There was dirt and other peoples hair on the carpet. The bathroom needed a full update, it looked dirty due to the condition of the shower etc and also had the smell of urine.
On waking up, all I could smell was vomit. It wasn't from me. On closer inspection, the bedside cabinet which had a carpetted top, had a stain on it. Breakfast was a "full English " but no black pudding, mushrooms or baked beans. I couldn't eat the sausages as they tasted disgusting. I knew my toast would arrive burnt, as I heard it being scraped in the kitchen, sure enough, it was inedible. I was also put off by the cafetiere which had seen better days. The landlady poured my coffee and milk - something I wanted to do AFTER I had finished my orange juice - I suspect she was covering up the fact the cup was dirty. (I had to was my cup in the bedroom as it was dirty).
I was told to leave by 10:30am and to leave my keys several times, once woukd have been sufficient. I think next time, I'll spend a bit more and get somewhere clean.
- Anthony (8/5): - Fine for one night.
- Mark (2/5): - Our stay did not happen because once we had seen the room for a few minutes we left! The first time at the age of 64 & 65 we have ever walked out of accommodation and we ain't the fussy types.
I honestly do not know how the owners can charge people for that room.
It looked totally dilapidated, old grim looking carpets ( around the toilet as well!), tiny space between toilet and hand basin in front of it, discoloured grim looking shower, unattractive stone wall, furniture that looked like it need scrapping, woodworm in the toilet door, old wallpaper lifting in places, lengths of dust or cobwebs hanging above the bed, cobwebs/dust on the stonewall and chandelier ( and I thought Halloween wasn't until the end of October!), floorboards soft and spongy in places, cold with a small electric heater that wouldn't take the chill off in a month of Sundays.
I note other reviewers describe the owners as lovely. The owner we dealt with was frosty (like the room!).
Bedding looked clean though.
- Robert (8/5): - Fine for my stay of two nights
- kenneth (8/5): - This is a very old building, that really does need some modernization. The couple who own and run it were very friendly and accommodating. In reflection it offers great value for money in the very expensive area of Kirkby lonsdale.
- Gary (8/5): - Good location for getting out and about exploring, service was very formal and precise, the breakfast was well cooked with a good selection, all in all good value for money. Although the venue itself was a little run down and could do with some updating making it more environmentally friend saving the owners some money in the long run
- Michelle (2/5): - Sorry but the whole place is falling to bits. Breakfast dripping in oil. Terrible. Pity cos the old couple who run it are lovely.
- C J (8/5): Handy stopover - Probably not everyones mug of cocoa but worked fine for me. Good evening meal and breakfast
- Grant (8/5): Nice stay - Lovely stay. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating.
- Mark (8/5): - Very welcoming hosts, down to earth and friendly.will definately go again
- Julie (10/5): Great location - Lovely little place , fantastic breakfast, great location and cheap price just a little old fashioned and dated furniture in our room but lovely and friendly lady
- Kathy (8/5): - No Beans!!
What a place I can’t decide whether I enjoyed it or even believed it.. run by a couple who have been there for 44 years and it doesn’t look like anything has been upgraded since they arrived.. it was like going back in time.. very nostalgic if your 50 like me it was like visiting my nana every bit of it… make do and mend don’t replace comes to mind..
- Peter (8/5): Relaxing overnight stay - The couple who run it are very friendly & helpful. The breakfast was tasty but there was a limited choice of cereals. We eat in the restaurant at night & the food was good value for money. The decor was dated but this gave the accommodation an old fashioned charm. Kirkby Lonsdale is an attractive town as is the surrounding area.
- David (8/5): Great position and wonderful food - The owners of the guest house (Mr & Mrs Campbell) we're very cheerful and welcoming. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked (both the evening meal and the breakfast). Mr& Mrs Campbell are both time served in hospitality, & have owned their present business in excess of forty years.
However, whilst the rooms need updating and modernising they were comfortably furnished
- Ian (6/5): Cheap - Cheap, so you get what you pay for. Breakfast not great needed beans with it. The whole place is in need of a update but with it being half the price of everywhere else i expected nothing special.
- Stephen (10/5): Central location, comfortable and great food - A very nice place to stay, the couple were very helpful, the cooking was home cooking and delicious. The place is very central and convenient.
- JANICE (4/5): - Oh dear, what can I say, the lady who runs it is lovely, very welcoming, the twin room was old but the beds were clean and comfortable, the breakfast was fine. However the shower room was not acceptable, the toilet and basin were clean but the shower was very grim, neither of us were prepared to use it we both had a wash! It is such a shame because she was so nice and we feel bad moaning, we had read scores of 5/5 so thought the bad reviews were just isolated.
- amamda (10/5): The copper kettle inn - The location was central perfect to explore the village and surrounding area. The hosts were very welcoming and accommodating couldnt do enough for us. We had a 2 single bedroom which had all the amenities, plenty of space for 2 people and private bathroom. Came with breakfast but we left before so cannot comment on food. Would recommend this quaint little place for an over night stay.
- Alan (8/5): - The owners have run the business for 48 years. They are a lovely couple and the breakfast was very good. We had a comfortable nights sleep. The room had en-suite facilities with tea and coffee making gear, complimentary soap and shower gel and a small tv. The overall decor could do with some modernisation but it’s a great base for exploring a pretty good value for money
- lisa (8/5): Warm friendly welcome - Warm friendly welcome, room was clean with everything we would want & more. As we had an early start we opted for a packed lunch in lieu of breakfast which was really nice, beautiful home cooked beef sarnie with a range of chocolate, fruit & drink.
- Andy (8/5): - Decor may he dated but the warm welcome most certainly is not. Made to feel totalky at home and the breakfast was excellent- especially the sauaages !!
- Sheryl (8/5): - Our stay was memorable and the service was personalised specifically during breakfast!
The property is old but with beautifully preserved character.
- Denise (4/5): Unfortunate choice! - Place needs a full refurbishment. It really is not fit for use. Only 2 positive things i can say are the sheets were clean as were the towels. Breakfast truly awful. The cheapest ingredients used. Thank goodness it was only for 1 night. Save your money. Awful smell of old cooking fat which lingers on your clothes.
- Andy (10/5): Very pleasent stay - Although the building is in need of a bit of refurbishment everthing is clean and is all in working order. Very welcoming and helpful proprietor along with a very good breakfast and a resonabley priced evening meal. Definitely would stay here again
- Sara (4/5): - Friendly staff but very disappointing rooms. Very dated, bed was broken, headboards not attached. Peeling wallpaper which really ruined the look of the old cobbled walls. Bathroom was just awful . If it wasnt for the lovely elderly lady running the place I would have left unfortunately, but did not want to be rude. My friend had the attic room and that wasn't as bad as the twin I stayed in. Great location though in desperate need of a refurbish.
- Trevor (10/5): - Inexpensive but had everything we needed.
- Gareth (2/5): - Money was taken out of my account by eviivo, but when I arrived the B&B insisted that I pay again. When I made her aware of this, she said I need to get the money from you. Room smelt of damp and the roof was leaking.
- Claire (10/5): Lovely Stay - We had a great stay at the Copper Kettle, lovely warm, cosy and clean room with very comfy bed. Pamela was a lovely, friendly host and nothing was too much trouble. Our evening meal and breakfast were superb. Free on site parking in the centre of town is a bonus.
- Jonathan (8/5): - Affordable accommodation and comfortable enough. Lovely friendly people that run the place. The room does need a little tlc but I have absolutely nothing to complain about at the price and would be happy to stay there again
- Steven (2/5): - Very poor service
- John (4/5): - Property could be so much better, obviously hasn't been updated for years, dust everywhere including on the breakfast teapot!
- Anthony (8/5): Perfect location - First off, fantastic location with very friendly and helpful owners.
Breakfast was good, the building dates back to 1610, for what we paid it represents excellent value.
Would stay again in this wonderful location
- Nicky (10/5): - Pam was an amazing host very welcoming the facilities were lovely we enjoyed our stay bed comfortable and breakfast tasty just missed our beans! 🙂
- MR MICHAEL (10/5): - Location eas excellent
- K.Coulson (10/5): Central, comfortable, helpful. - Nice, central location, bit dated but not an issue, nice room and excellently priced food. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Would return another time if in the area.
I liked my room much better than my friends did theirs though.
- Alex (6/5): - requires a large amount of work carried out on electrical installation and decor etc to achieve an acceptable standard for visitors.
