Guest Reviews
- SUNDAR (10/5): Ideal honeymoon destination - Stay was very good. Ideal place for people who enjoy serenity.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely hotel, beautiful setting away from everything. Was here 20 years ago and it's still charming, but a bit tired around the edges. Could be such a gem with some investment.
- Sameh (6/5): - good hotel with bad service
- Carolin (10/5): - Great and friendly service and great choice options at the dinner buffet. The rooms were nice an the bed comfortable. Longer pool hours would have been nice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent location. Amazing fruit bats, water monitors, kingfishers & other birds. Staff are wonderful. Buffet food for breakfast & dinner with a wide choice.
- Rhea Maria (8/5): - We enjoyed the Ranweli very much
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff
Flowers on Bed when room made up
Beautiful surroundings
Beach location
- Verified traveler (2/5): - It should be maintained well. Cleanliness is nill and food is not nice and quality too. Ordered a burger on A la carte and the burger bun was just a ball of flour. French fries were over cooked. Salt & Pepper holdings were so dirty. Stayed hungry at that night and as there were no any restaurants close by. Had cockroaches in bathroom and bedroom.Gully was full of rustic. Was a horrible stay. Never recommend for any.
- nancy (8/5): Wish we had stayed closer to Colombo - No acceptable plug-ins for our phones. No adapters available at the reception.
Had the farthest room from the center.
Hot water only available after mid-day due to solar heating.
Meal hours very limited.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful. Kind staff. Breakfast served too late. - Lovely and spacious room but some path construction made it a bit confusing getting to it.
Breakfast started at 7:30am which made it difficult for us to get an early start on our bikes. Given the heat, it made it difficult to complete our scheduled arrival 90 km north. We asked if we could start breakfast early but they did not allow this. So I would recommend this place for people needing an early start on the day.
The food was delicious though! I loved the Sri Lankan dishes they served.
There was a school group there, from Colombo, that took over the beautiful pool for quite a while.
The staff was helpful at getting us to a bike repair shop in town. So the staff was extremely kind to us during our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Getting into hotel is awesome! Staff is very friendly and helpfull.
Wifi works only in lobby and is very terrible :(
Food is just ok.
Overall nice experience, but pictures looks waaaay better than reality.
Alt for dyrt ift hvad man får.
- Luanda (8/5): - Very nice hotel! Clean room with a/c! Service was excellent and good breakfast!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Dated hotel that caters more for local day trippers than to foreign tourists. Quite isolated and expensive to eat at.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location and privacy great. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. Towels had old stains.Pool deck needed repairs. Buffet was ok, selection was not good. It needs to be changed daily. The barbecue was overcooked. Nightly music was awful needs to be up lifting. There was only one band of trio that was good. Would stay again due to the private location. Hotel needs to enforce swim wear at pool. People should not be able to wear street clothes.
- Anders (6/5): Skuffer over servicen - Skuffet over servicen. Fint uteområde og god mat. Rent og pent.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice location. Easy access to the beach. Very good place for relaxation.
- Tomasz (10/5): Perfect stay - Perfect place to stay and rest!!! Lovely poeple and nvery good food.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Nice place with a big pollutionproblem - I liked the resort and its freindly staff, but very sad is all that garbage and plasicbottles in the mangroves and even on the resorts beach. Therefore i cant recommend the place.
- Karen (8/5): - We only stayed for one night
All was v good only adverse comments would be lack of WiFi in rooms and poor fruit choice for breakfast - given the local fruit that would have been available
- Verified traveler (10/5): - EXCELLENT LOCATION :)
FRIENDLY STAFF,
FOOD WAS DELICIOUS......
- Claire (2/5): Nice Hotel BUT Terrible Service - This hotel is situated 45 mins from airport, hotel can arrange transfer for $30. Hotel is lovely, reached via a raft over the lake, which is very peaceful and a unique way to reach a hotel. Hotel is situated on the beach and the rooms are well appointed with good air con and very comfortable beds. However the service at this hotel is appalling, firstly we went for lunch at the restaurant where one of our group was brought a beer glass full of sand. Then when we went for our evening meal we asked to order off the menu rather than having the buffet which looked like a battle of who could get their food first. 20 mins after ordering we were told the steaks we ordered were not available as they were frozen and needed to be thawed - we were surprised they freeze their steak in the first place. We then changed our orders to the mixed grill which took a further hour to arrive, when the food came an hour and 20 mins later, it was all over cooked and not edible. We asked for a refund on the food as we were not happy to pay and didn’t eat it but the duty manager said a refund could not be offered. After a lengthy discussion with him and a phone call to his boss, he finally agreed to refund of 50% on the food bill. The only person who has any customer service skills at this hotel is a young man who was working on the check in desk, who was very helpful and understanding of the situation. There is no where else to eat around this hotel - all prices are in £ or € on menu.
- Kasun (10/5): - Best eco friendly hotel. Peaceful and relaxing place.
- Zurich18 (6/5): - It started with a nice experience going by a ferry to the hotel premises. There was no one on arrival however reached the reception check in was okay. We have not been informed about the dinner closing time since we arrived at 9.15pm and only once in the room being told dinner closes at 9.30pm. So we rushed just to be told donner is over (even 2 guest were still eating. We asked if we could at least get a sandwich or something since we just arrived and are on half board. The supervisor said yes and we were asked to seat in the lounge.
Room was nice (Deluxe Bungalow) and so was the location. There is a actually nice beach on the left. Service in general was omay. Some one or two waiters were friendly and also the housekeeping was very friendly. Food in the restaurant was poor. Live station was rather "dirty" and the whole had this run down impression. Maybe its their Eco Concept and given the fact that its straight on the sea makes it difficult to maintain with the sea water wind.
At the check out we noticed that the first night sandwich was charged (they charge u all in Euro and then exchange it into LKR) so I said how comes since we had half board paid it would have been a normal thing to at least give us this as we have not been informed aboit the closing time of buffet upon arrival else we could have gone first for dinner and then do the check in. Overall a so so experince.
Prachtige kamers, of hutjes eigenlijk. Ontzettend vriendelijk.
- beth (10/5): Beautiful - Was a very beautiful locatin and very nice room.scenery was awesome great beach
- Steven (10/5): Beautiful remote hotel. - If you want a quiet place to stay on a nice beach when arriving into Sri Lanka, do not hesitate to book this hotel.
We stayed in the Beach front bungalow and it was actually on the beach.
One thing they need to change is the price structure at the bar and restaurant, everything is in Euro's. And then at the end of the stay charge you in Sri Lankan Rupees at a very poor exchange rate.
My advice is to keep a tally of how much you spend and pay that amount in Euro's or you will be paying a significant amount more on already quite high prices.
If the hotel changed this, it would of ticked every box on a high recommendation for the type of retreat me and my partner look for in a hotel.
You even have to get a floating raft to the hotel to cross the river which all adds to the rustic beauty.
Baareissa palvelu tosi hidasta esim. Allasbaarissa odotimme paria keitto tilausta n. 1tunti. Samoin illalla ravintolan baarissa paria drinkkiä odotimme n.
- Feran (6/5): Disappointing - Food was well below expectation. We were given run down room as we booked thru you.
- Gail (8/5): Plenty to do - Rooms were spacious and very clean. Staff were polite but service slow. You can make your holiday as busy or relaxed as you wish , plenty to see and do and good swimming pool.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - exceptional hotel with a lot of charm, good food, private beach, nice employees, only good points.
- ianb (8/5): Peaceful retreat - Rustic, peaceful, a great place to chill out. Bird watching tour was worth doing.
- Dawn (10/5): Lovely setting and a good location for day trips - We arrived after dark and the entrance to the hotel was one of our highlights of the holiday. The staff were very accommodating and always smiling. We had three rooms during our stay because we helped the management out for one night as they needed our bungalow. They rewarded us with an even better bungalow nearest to the see (114). Always book a bungalow as the standard rooms, whilst nice and clean do not have a very nice sitting out area and do not have a view of the sea. All bungalows have a view of the sea but some are closer to the beach than others.
The hotel didn't offer any excursions when we were there (independent travellers) but Anthony next door will provide you with all you need at a very good cost. Don't worry about finding him as he will find you :)
The food is buffet style and as good as one would expect from a hotel of this size, plenty of choice and the restaurant staff are lovely. We were half board and ate at Anthony's most lunchtimes as his wife is a very good cook, her sri lankan curries are really lovely and made fresh for you.
- Rob (4/5): Don't book this hotel. Find another place. - I spent 4 days in Ranweli. The hotel is good but not recommend anyone. No evening life, outside hotel is one Athony restaurant where if you going there see fat man with broken tooth on front and waiting for your money. Give you a menu card and waiting 30 cm behind you any talking" what you want to eat". In hotel the prices are in Euro or pound and if you buy something you never know what rate they exchanged you for rupees. All prices are excluded government tax. We had cockroachs in are room. And stuff used are perfume for nice smell in bathroom when came clean. This is not acceptable. They not clean how they should.
- Greg (8/5): Ranweli Holiday Resort stay - A very nice hotel , where you start your journey by having a raft trip accross the narrow lagoon to the peninsular that the hotel is built upon. Very private setting and very welcoming staff. If you are looking for a low key relaxed setting this is a place to consider.
Folks very nice as well. I left my phone in dinning area and in morning it was returned safe and sound from reception ...always a very good sign as to how a place is managed, though not suggesting this as a future standard measure.
Well worth the stay
- Janice & Lucy (8/5): First timers to Sri Lanka - To get to the hotel, you have to cross the lagoon by raft which was fun. When my daughter and I arrived at Hotel Ranweli, they could not trace our Expedia booking which was a bit of a worry. They booked us into a room anyway but there was only one bed and we had requested two separate beds. Within half an hour, they had brought in and made up another bed in the room. Room was very comfortable and rain shower in bathroom very soothing after a hot day. We had only booked bed and breakfast as we wanted to venture out but we had quite a few evening meals in the restaurant as the food was excellent and varied. Breakfast was good and plentiful too (stick to Ceylon tea as their coffee is pretty awful...) It was not a busy time at the hotel so we had our pick of sunbeds by the swimming pool and shade from the palm trees. Pool overlooked the Sea. Snacks and drinks available from poolside bar all day. Grounds were well kempt with no rubbish in evidence. This was an eco-friendly hotel so efforts were made to respect the natural environment. We loved the little "squirrels" (looked like chipmunks) who cheekily came up to you for titbits.
- OldBaba (2/5): Over-hyped charmless property in a swamp. - See my TravelAdvisor review for all the details. This place is to be avoided. Its location is poor, its staff is indifferent and its management is self-absorbed. All they care about is your money, any way they can get it. If you leave dissatisfied, they probably don't care about that, either. We couldn't wait to get out, even though we knowingly forfeited another full day's rental. It was worth it to get out.
- sjkip (4/5): Over-hyped, poorly located hotel with lousy staff - I've already reviewed this place on other sites, as well as on Expedia, I think. It's an awful place, very disappointing. My advice, in general, is to keep looking. You'll easily find a better hotel in Sri Lanka.
- pominoz (2/5): A bad experience - Let's start with the good points: we arrived late at night and fell in love with the place. The setting is wonderful, the rooms are large and well equipped. The staff are friendly but not very helpful. Then we discovered we were not going to get a good night's sleep because of the barking stray dogs roaming the resort site. We complained 3 times over two days. On the last attempt when I complained the reception staff simply laughed at me.
The Internet is painfully slow. It took 4 minutes to download 3 emails. Websites are impossible to access. Internet is only accessible in the public area and is not available in the rooms.
The food is catered for those tourists on a full or half board vacation; i.e. buffet food. We wanted a la carte but our food did not arrive until all the other tourists had finished their buffet, approximately one hour after ordering. The a la carte food is, at best, mediocre.
Service is only marginal. 15 minutes to get an espresso coffee; 20 minutes for 2 glasses of water. Another occasion it took asking 5 members of staff for a glass of milk and a 15 minute wait.
When you sign for your food and beverages you are charged in Euros. However, when you check out you are charged in SL rupees and are more expensive than the menu price.
Then when you come to leave you have to endure the vulture taxi drivers waiting to overcharge you for a trip to the airport.
- Mike (8/5): Beautiful setting for a hotel - Got to car park where we jumped on a raft which was punted across a river. We then walked along a path through the mangroves to the reception block where we checked in and was then shown to a bungalow of our own with all the things you need for a comfortable stay. Outside the door at the rear we opened onto the Indian Ocean and beach.
One word really sums it u, idyllic.
- Naomal (6/5): - Unusual location set among a small interesting mangrove swamp. Room was clean and comfy. Staff was friendly but did not sometimes deliver on what was requested.
