Guest Reviews
- Emmalee Raymond (10/5): Cozy, rustic, and great hosts! - Cozy, rustic, fantastic scenery, delicious home cooked food, and our hosts Gary and Susan were just lovely! 10/10 would stay here again! Nothing!
- Alexander (9/5): Excellent B&B in beautiful location with wonderful hosts - Fantastic hosts. Very clean property. Comfortable beds and excellent breakfast Shower was not very powerful
- Heidi Heinilä (9/5): Heidi H - Great traditional B&B. The house is atmospheric, with nice history. It was lovely to sit downstairs by the fireplace after a walk at the hills.
The breakfast was deliciuos and varied, everything homemade. Passing trains didn't disturb us, on the contrary, they brought a nice special bonus. -

- Allan (10/5): Good stay - Friendly hosts, good food, room was comfortable and well furnished.Great location for hillwalking.
- Isla (10/5): - Very good breakfast, lots of choice Everything was great
- Frances (10/5): - Fantastisch ontbijt; fantastische gastheer en gastvrouw!
- Sacha (10/5): - Such amazing hosts and cozy cottage. We loved it here!
- Lizette (9/5): -
- SMALLWOOD (9/5): Quaint and Cosy - The BnB was beautiful, apparently an old Railway House that was converted to the BnB. That was interesting to hear, we were told about the trains that run, and that we would hear them. I did wait to hear the final train which I did and it wasn't unpleasant at all. We absolutely loved our Breakfast the following morning and were pleased that it was plant based too, our daughter being a Vegetarian was even more so. That we only had a one night stay, will definitely be back.
- Natasha (10/5): Warm and friendly in a spectacular location - A wonderful place with wonderful hosts. The location and the building are certainly something special. The bed was comfortable with lovely sheets, and in the morning you eat in the big farm style kitchen with Susan cooking up a fantastic breakfast next to you. Unfortunately we arrived late and could not enjoy the evening meal, but I will certainly aim for it next time. We arrived in the dark so it was difficult to find the exit from the highway, even though the building itself can be spotted from the road it is a sharp turn.
Nichts
- jkirkwood001 (9/5): An oasis in the Highlands! - Lovely old cottage, but very tidy and well equipped. Gary & Susan were super friendly, thoughtful, and engaging. Delicious vegan meals. Good Wi-Fi even. Being able to hike up one or more Munroes out the back gate was terrific.
- Agija (10/5): Beautiful place and wonderful owners! -
- Lukas (10/5): - Well kept and clean place. The owners were very friendly.
- Jem (10/5): - Wonderful location and amazing hosts, very friendly and helpful! Absolutely incredible breakfast, one of if not the best of our travels in the UK!
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Shatha (10/5): It’s Five star accommodation - Amazing stay, the dinner was delicious specially the dessert. I loved the breakfast and I enjoyed homemade peanut butter. Nice view, next time I will stay longer I can’t fault it
- Peter (10/5): - The friendliness of the owners, the general chat with the other guests, the food, the stunning location and weather. What a wonderful experience. Thank you
- Kaufsim (10/5): Awesome vegan B&B which offers a very cozy stay - We had an awesome stay at Balsporran Bed and Breakfast. After a warm welcome, we enjoyed the cozy living room, had an awesome meal for dinner and after a relaxing night, we enjoyed the large breakfast. It was perfect.
- Joao (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable, friendly, relaxing, excellent vegan supper and breakfast
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - Pristine landscape next to the stream gives classic views of highland scenery. The railway line is adjacent but occasional passing trains are unobtrusive to the atmosphere of the overall quiet ambiance.
The hosts are eager to help with traveling advice and suggestions. They are accommodating for personal preferences of the excellent meals they offer. The excellent dinner meals are offered for travelers' convenience to save the effort to drive further to reach the sparse restaurants in the isolated highland region.
This is an excellent choice for a room for those wanting a quiet comfortable place for retreat. Ideally situated for travelers by car, foot or cycle.
- Jonathan (9/5): excellent, comfortable, great location, personal service. Recommended. - excellent personal service, really good food, amazing location. standard-sized 4ft6 bed, a larger bed is always better but constrained by size of the room.
- Janet (8/5): Pleasant stay with friendly hosts on the last night of our road trip. - Vegan breakfast was a welcome change . Nothing
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Houlin (10/5): - English isn't my native language, but I think the world is "quaint". The whole place oozes culture and history.
- Kim (10/5): Balsporran B & B is a must if you are in the area. We stayed in the middle of winter and were so comfortable and wer - This property is amazing! Absolutely beautiful location with the most amazing hosts. A very tastefully decorated property keeping with its heritage and lovely bathroom products supplied. The food is all 100% plant based which I was a little hesitant about however everything we ate was just delicious. Not a thing
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gražina (10/5): Cozy & Welcoming - We really enjoyed our stay. The hosts were helpful and friendly, and it felt cozy and welcoming at Balsporran House. The soups and breakfasts were delicious. We highly recommend this place. Nothing

- Vera (10/5): Fantastic - Location
- Mersadez (10/5): Wonderful quick stay - Beautiful cottage on the way the way to where we were going. We went to the distillery before hand and it was about a 10 minute drive to the cottage. Hiking out the front door and beautiful sites. The owners were very nice and welcoming. The room was super cute and comfortable.
- Caryl (10/5): Absolutely wonderful stay. - Beautiful location! Very comfy bed. Delicious breakfast. Great place to stay!
- Delia (10/5): Amazing - Absolutely delicious
- Hilary (10/5): A wonderful experience! - We enjoyed our stay at Balsporran B&B so much that we will definitely return. Our hosts were so welcoming and made us feel so comfortable and at home. We ordered a delicious homemade soup on arrival and the breakfast was exceptional as all the ingredients are natural and plant based. The surroundings are absolutely stunning with roaming mountains and give a feeling of relaxation and well being.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lindsay (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. The location is stunning, with gardens and a stream running by. Very friendly, and nothing was any trouble. There is a guest lounge, which is super comfy, and it's nice to meet other guests. I was brought tea and banana loaf in the lounge once I'd checked in. The room was spotless and had everything I needed, plus extra touches. The beds are super comfy. I chose to have something from the supper menu and booked a packed lunch for the next day. Everything is plant based, but be reassured you're not missing out, as the food is delicious. Breakfast had lots of choice. I would 100% recommend and would definitely stay again. Thank you for a lovely stay. Nothing
- Delia (10/5): My stay was just wonderful, can’t wait to return - Location was absolutely amazing and perfect
Breakfast was so delicious, so much available on the table
- Judy (10/5): Very enjoyable. Many thanks - Traditional cottage, very beautiful and comfortable. The environment is fantastic! Nothing. It’s the best
- Pete (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! Nothing!
- Peter (9/5): Superb - The location, accomodation and staff/owners.
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, very comfortable and very friendly owners.
- Kathryn (9/5): Superb -
- Helen (8/5): Very good - The rooms were lovely and the people helpful and very pleasnat It was a vegan breakfast.
- Katy (10/5): Highly recommend - Ideal location on my way North. Beautiful house and room. Food was great. I’m not vegan but it was delicious. Susan and Gary were extremely hospitable.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gavin (10/5): Lovely friendly place in beautiful location. - Fantastic location, lovely hosts, amazing breakfast. Nothing not to like. The only thing to be aware of is that there is, quite rightly, some focus on sustainability. So, if you enjoy three sirloin steaks for breakfast, then this might not be quite right for you.
- Lee (10/5): Cosy B & B with very friendly hosts. - Could not fault our stay. We were booked in for one night to walk some of the local munros. We were made to feel very welcome; the B & B is incredibly cosy and Gary and Susan were fantastic hosts. The food was delicious.
- Michael (9/5): Superb - Friendly hosts. Quaint with some history behind the building. Great breakfast. Good value. The bedroom & bathroom were quite small.
- Simone (10/5): Exceptional - Location was stunning - went on an amazing walk at the back of the property that took us out into the wilderness before we checked in which was just the start of our little Cairngorms adventure. The whole place is immaculate and decorated with such style. The unexpected bonus was that the breakfast was 100% plant based and entirely delicious.
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect for my needs All boxes ticked
Lovely hosts
- Janet (10/5): Well worth knowing about - would use again - Great place to break journey on way to north of Scotland from Edinburgh.
Surprisingly quiet given location near railway line and A9.
Very welcoming hosts and fantastic vegan breakfast with wide range of tasty breakfast options.
- Poompong (10/5): Will return without any doubts - The property is very cosy and clean. The location is just perfect and we really enjoy it. Gary and Susan are amazing and very helpful. I need to give a big compliment to Susan as she is a very good cook!!! Nothing
- Brian (10/5): possibly the best B&B I have stayed in - Greats hosts, lovely room and fantastic food
- Eduardo (4/5): Disappointing - I had the most humiliating experience with this place I have ever had in my life as a tourist. My best friend drove me to the B&B (she would be legally camping near the Cairngorms National Park, since the owner had informed me 2 days before my arrival that they could not accommodate my friend in their B&B since they had exceeded their capacity, which I understood and of course accepted). I was really looking forward to spending the night at Balsporran Bed&Breakfast since I love random cottages that are far away from cities and integrated into beautiful landscapes. Arriving at this beautiful B&B, I was not „welcomed“ by the owner with a „hello, nice to have you here“ but with a „you must be E. (my name). You (my friend) should be not here. You can not be in our premises.“ He thought I was trying to sneak her into his B&B, which I was clearly not - otherwise I wouldn’t have asked them if she could be staying with me prior to my arrival (it was a doubled bed that’s why I had asked at all). I tried to explain to him that I wasn’t trying to sneak her into his B&B that she was just driving me to his B&B. I tried to explain myself but he wouldn’t even listen to me. He actually didn’t let me finish a simple sentence at first. The owner completely lost it, saying that he knew „the type (I was)“ and so on. It was humiliating. I felt ashamed although I shouldn’t have felt this way at all. As a dark skin boy, it wasn’t the first time I experienced this kind of behavior (I‘m not claiming that the owner treated me badly because of the colour of my skin at way), I’m just saying that I’m used to being treated badly. All in all, it was for sure the most humiliating I have ever felt in my life, especially because I was very polite and reasonable to the owner and because I didn’t do anything wrong.
- Amrik (10/5): Comfortable night stay - Very comfortable night stay whilst on a mountain biking weekend. Excellent breakfast & lovely bed! What more could you ask for! I think prices are a little lower than expected.
- Lydia (10/5): Gem of a B&B - Susan and Gary and beautiful people who make their guest feel very welcome in their gorgeous B&B
- Allison (10/5): Absolutely fabulous - We received a warm greeting from Gary. After being shown to our rooms we were offer refreshments in the sitting room which included cakes and pastries home made by Susan. Later on in the evening Gary joined us again and we were offered a glass of whisky. Despite not being vegan ourselves we enjoyed a lovely breakfast prepared by Susan with home baked bread which was gorgeous. The table was laden with everything you could possibly require. Attention to detail was 2nd to none
- Doris (10/5): Beautiful, friendly and comfortable. Highly recommended - Breakfast was exceptionally good with plant based ingredients. We also requested a simple dinner because local restaurant were quite far away. Totally delicious and reasonably priced. Even offered afternoon tea when we arrived/ Everything from decor, cleanliness and beds were top notch. Looking forward to staying again.
- Simon (10/5): Simply the best. - I stopped here for one night during my LEJOG cycle ride, in short there was nothing not to like. I had a superb stopover. There was nothing not to like.
- Michael (10/5): A simply wonderful B&B - Wonderful location; remote and bordered on the idyllic and even though it is still close to the A9, the sound of traffic was not intrusive. Facilities were superb and it is very homely. Gary & Susan are lovely hosts. An evening meal can be provided and whilst I was there, I had their home made soup and a lentil curry and salad. It was lovely! Breakfast was also top drawer. I was only sorry not to have been staying another night! They're so well placed for some great walks. Nothing to dislike!
- Alastair (10/5): Susan and Gary are great hosts doing a fantastic job. - It’s a great location, with a stream running in front, the moors across the railway line, and nice garden and grounds. Perfect for the Dalwhinnie Munros. It’s an interesting old building that’s been modernised in a very sympathetic way. Very comfortable. I enjoyed all the plant- based food, and took advantage of a packed lunch and evening bowls, all of which were excellent. Nothing.
- Rajiv (10/5): An amazing BnB - The breakfast was great.
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ronald (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic location TV signal
- Sarah (10/5): Fantastic stay - Fantastic food, friendly hosts, beautiful rooms.
Would definately recommend.
- Natasha (10/5): Exceptional - Just a great bed and breakfast in the hills, off the A9. Perfect for doing walks nearby. Cosy guest lounge for relaxing at night. Hosts can provide all meals. Meals are excellent, all plant based, but so tasty and filling, you don't even miss the meat. Breakfasts is a feast at the main table shared with the other guests. One of the top bed and breakfasts in Scotland by far. Unfortunately, water pressure in shower is very poor. But there is also a water problem in the area at the moment.
- Aimee (9/5): Superb -
- Samuel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephanie (10/5): The hosts were very welcoming and the room beautifully appointed. Wonderful place to stay! - Stunning views and great walks from the doorstep. Really enjoyed my stay in this delightful place. Wish I’d had time to stay longer.
- Arnaud (10/5): - Ran by lovely and friendly hosts, Susan and Gary, the property is tastefully decorated and situated in an iconic surrounding. We enjoyed the focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing which was apparent throughout our stay. The breakfast was delicious and it felt very special to stay there considering that this place was built to facilitate the installation of the railway track and later on during the operation process. We also appreciated the seamless communication process upfront. We hope to come back soon.
- Michal (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was delicious! The hosts couldn't be nicer and more helpful. The surrounding hikes perfect for some walks or short hikes. Amazing stay :)
- Martin (10/5): A cosy spot to start or finish your visit to Scotland - just the perfect spot - finished the NC500 and getting ready to head home - great nights sleep // great hosts. Great food - and and a safe parking spot for the motorbike.
- Debbie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robin (10/5): Delightful, quirky place in the heart of the mountains. - Beautiful rooms, very unusual house, dramatic location, very friendly hosts. Nothing really. The entry on booking.com could make clearer that all food is vegan.
- Stephen (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (10/5): Best ever - exceptional nothing
- Mary (10/5): Unexpectedly perfect - Great place to stay to break the long journey up or down the A9. Beautifully refurbished old house, everything so tastefully done; quiet room despite being right next to the railway. No sound whatsoever from the road.
Breakfast was fabulous, and plentiful. Everything is, or seems to be, ethically sourced right down to the loo paper. A really delightful stay that I hope to repeat Honestly, nothing.
- John (10/5): A really warm, hospitable, friendly and relaxing place to stay. We loved it. - Breakfast was fantastic. Lovely plant based food, cooked very well. There was also plenty choice. There was nothing we didn't like.
- Gill (9/5): Superb -
- Jonathan (10/5): Cosy stay in a beautiful location - Susan and Gary were very friendly, there was a cosy lounge to relax in, breakfast was brilliant and a stunning location. Shower could have done with a little more pressure, but maybe in the location this isn't possible.
- Lisa (10/5): One of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed with great staff and beautiful views! - Loved everything about this stay! The hosts couldn’t be nicer or more welcoming, the room was stunning and the bathroom sparkling clean! The food was top class and so refreshing knowing it was all vegan too 😍 Literally nothing! it was perfect
- Nicholas (9/5): Superb -
- Loodish (10/5): Exceptional - The most charming B&B amongst the moors. The owners are really nice and funny. Breakfast was amazing and everything is plant based which is obviously a plus.
- Terese Toft (10/5): Would definitely recommend - In the middle of nowhere but beautiful nature is this small B&B. Really nice interior, lovely citrus smells and calming yoga music. Felt like a small retreat. We were unaware of it being vegan, but all food was so delicious and homemade, and if we weren’t told, we probably wouldn’t have noticed. I would definitely recommend it to others.
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Janet (10/5): Cosy and comfy in the Cairngorms. - Brilliant location. Beautifully presented throughout the property with the cosiest guest lounge. Extremely hospitable hosts who make you very welcome. Super comfortable beds and a heroic breakfast which is served at the large dining table in the hosts' kitchen where Susan chatted to us whilst finishing the cooked breakfast. There are walks from the door up into the nearby Cairngorms with great views all around. The Dalwhinnie Distillery is just 3 miles up the road.
Really can't fault it. Nothing. Best B n B we've ever stayed in.
- Alison (10/5): A little touch of paradise in a truly tranquil setting. - Everything!! The location was amazing, the house was full of character and the room was stunning. Susan and Gary were brilliant hosts, made us feel like family, and Susan’s plant based food was to die for. Their attention to detail, finishing touches and beautiful aromas were something we’ve never experienced before. Nothing. We just wish we could have stayed longer.
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional - This place needs 50 stars. Beautiful, peaceful, clean and the most beautiful breakfast set up I have seen. Susan was exceptional and fantastic cook. Really enjoyed talking with both Susan and Garry. Highly recommend. I could have stayed here for a few days. Lovely place. Thank you!
- Hayley (10/5): A perfect stay - Incredible location, breakfast and hosts. Can't wait to return one day for a longer stay.
- Debra (8/5): Very good -
