Guest Reviews
- Debra (1/5): Appaling - avoid at all costs, look at reviews with photos - Nothing. The place was appalling. This place should not be allowed to run as a guest house. There are several areas where the roof has leaked with water stains on walls, wallpaper hanging off ceilings and walls. It doesn't even appear safe.
- Kirsty (1/5): Guests smoking in another room. No response from email complaints. Do not stay. - I will say they were accomodating by letting us in early to attend a wedding in the area. Strong smell of fresh cigarette smoke in the corridor and in our room upon arriving back after the wedding. This suggests active smoking within the establishment. The property is advertised and no smoking, with clear signs in the rooms to demonstrate this. This continued overnight which entered our room and aggravated my throat. There was no member of staff at the property when we arrived at night, and no member of staff when we checked out. Due to the overwhelming smell, we were forced to leave earlier than planned. We have contacted the hotel privately after the stay to give them the opportunity to respond, but received no reply. We have gave them a week to respond and we have also fed this back via feedback from another 3rd party site. Again with no reply. This will now be raised as a formal complaint.
- Rhian (1/5): Terrible customer service - I received a message from Booking.com advising that if my check-in was after 11 pm, I should call the pub to arrange it. When I phoned, the lady I spoke to was very abrupt and rude. I asked if it would be possible to check in at 12 am, and she immediately said no, stating she would not wait up for me because the pub would be open in the morning.
I was surprised, as I would have expected some alternative option, such as a lockbox or a safe place to leave the key. Instead, she ended the call abruptly without offering any solution or assistance, and our reservation was not cancelled on their end.
I then had to go through Booking.com to try and cancel and request a refund, which was stressful and time-consuming. This situation ultimately left us without accommodation for the night.
Very disappointing experience — I would not recommend due to the poor customer service.

- Janet (5/5): - Location Paid for a Deluxe room, unfortunately there was nothing Deluxe about it
- Steffan (3/5): Smelly and noisy - The location was good The bar area was a blurry fog of vape smoke when we walked in with music blaring and it stank of stale cigarettes and beer. I’d avoid staying here. Such a shame as the rest of Barnard Castle is really nice.
- steve (9/5): ideal location nice and clean room great staff - staff were very friendly hotel was in a great location very comfordable bed nothing
- David (9/5): - Excellent location right in middle of Barnard Castle. Lovely friendly pub, with very obliging and helpful owners. Bed was large and very comfortable. Good value for money, would stay again. Only slight issue we had was no table lamp in the room, so room was a little too bright for us Owners said they would add this to the room.
- Jane (7/5): -
- markegreenhalgh (9/5): Good value and a nice place - Nice place and good value
- Guy (4/5): - Bed. Shower was unusable. No table lamps. We received no breakfast on both days. There was nobody in the place when we got up on both days.
To be fair they had had some burst pipes recently and should have cancelled our stay.
We bought a breakfast out on both days.
- Des (10/5): -
- Janneke (8/5): Prima - Goede centrale locatie, prima voor 1 overnachting de slang van de douche lekte...
- Dawn (6/5): Ok but a bit grim of a pub - The property is central to the town . The rooms were ok , very dated with very poor lighting not ideal for getting ready to go out mo wardrobe or hanging in room , and a shared bathroom on the landing with toilets no hand basin in toilet or sanitary bins . Clean bedding and clean towels could not fault but not the most updated property to stay in .

- Lyn (7/5): -
- Mima (1/5): Too bad to stay left it an hour later - Noise ridiculous no on suite never bothered to stop came out of it couldn’t get refund loud music

- Neil (2/5): Terrible - Was a disco in the pub and the music was really loud until 11pm.the radiator in the room was on full blast as the knob had broken. They gave me a bottle of water to keep me cool in the night ? No remote for the tv. And to round it off I was locked out the first night as they had put the latch on the front door so the key wouldn’t work
- Nichola (9/5): -
- Helen (2/5): It was depressing and uncomfortable. - The location. Paid for en suite family room. The en suite was a cupboard which housed a micro shower and toilet. It has a sliding door which didn’t slide so had to remain open. No hot water from the shower. No towel rail so had to use wardrobe door to hang wet towels. Two pillows for each bed but only one pillow had a pillowcase. No electric socket adjacent to kettle. Had to use a socket the other side of the room at the side of the bed near the floor. No bedside lamp. Previous guests toothbrush on the floor. Previous guests packaging from chocolate teacakes in drawer. Tomato ketchup sachet on stairs for two days. The whole room and other areas need fully refurbished. Stayed three nights but no room cleaning took place.
I only remained for the three nights because all other hotels were full.
- Abby (7/5): A nice place to stay - I liked that it was right in the town centre so perfect for what I needed with my family. I also like that the family room had a small ensuite. It was very noisy of a night when they had to empty the bottles. Also that the fire exit which is the way you should leave when the pub is closed was blocked that is a safety issue. You could also not buy any hot meals at the pub.
- Marie (7/5): Canny - Staff were spot on and super friendly and helpful, room was clean and bed was comfy, not a fan of a shared bathroom but it didn’t really matter cos I was smashed . An easy place to stay with decent parking on a first come first served basis ( free for all) it’s
Worth the money you pay , cheaper than a taxi back to Darlo . Cracking beers! Shared bathroom
- PAUL (8/5): Comfortable nights sleep - Staff accommodated a early arrival so we could attend a wedding
- Kevin (7/5): -
- Linda (1/5): Dreadful - Nothing the place was awful I booked this for my mother it’s was the worse decsion I made , It was scruffy the carpets were black going up to the steep stairs up to the room, it smelt , there was loud music blasting , she felt intimidated as there was lots of young people about ! the way you have to enter the building wasn’t ideal for an elderly lady to enter and exit by herself
- Melvyn (7/5): Did what it said on the tin -
- Brian (4/5): -
- Yasmin (1/5): Avoid at all costs! - The only good thing about this hotel is the location! Appalling conditions. Upon arrival, the bathroom light wasnt working and it took 1.5hours after arrival for it to be fixed. Gaping holes in the shower tray aswell as inbetween the floorboards and skirting board. You had to be careful where you walked as on some floorboards, it felt as tho you were going to go through. I dont think the mattress has been changed in a good 10 year, you can feel every spring and when laid down, it feels as though you are lying on the divan base! Wallpaper peeling off the walls/ceiling. I tried to raise a complaint via booking.com but they dont want to know. I was unable to raise a complaint with the hotel at the time due to feeling intimidated as the reception for the hotel is in the bar, where the locals appear to congregate.
- SUZANNE (8/5): -
- Gary (8/5): - Very friendly staff Nothing
- Carberry (8/5): -
- Rob (8/5): Nice pub, central, friendly staff, all good thanks - Nice pub, very friendly helpful lady in the pub. Decent beer and prices. Great central location and parking outside a bonus - free Nothing really
- Tony (10/5): - V friendly staff room nice and quiet and Guiness 4 pond a pint.
- SUZANNE (8/5): Basic but clean and comfortable, friendly staff and great location - Friendly clean
- Elaine (6/5): -
- paul (1/5): - The beer The holes in the floor due to poor floorboards.
No light in bathroom and no attempt to fix it.
Lying in bed to hear other guests using toilet adjacent to bedroom wall.
Shared bathroom and toilet not a great experience although we did have en suite we cudnt see.
- John (9/5): Great overnight stop exactly as needed. Good value. - Great location centre of Barnard Castle with public parking right outside the door. Perfect for overnight stay, basic room with tea/coffee facilities. Clean bedding and clean toilet and shower. No problem. Good value. Unfortunately bar was closed when I returned from the function I was attending just after 10 pm but not a big surprise in this day and age being a Monday night, plus I was able to use another pub nearby.
- Michelle (1/5): - Nothing Dirty not tall wot was expected. Had sleep in clothes
- Susie Woodman (6/5): - Location Desperately in need of updating. Food not available. Carpet in the toilet/shower room is a no-no 🤮
- Susie Woodman (9/5): - Location Old outdated accommodation
- Joanne (4/5): -
- Peter (6/5): Comfortable. I was the only person staying though. - Breakfast was not in the offer. In morning l wanted to report leaking ceiling to any member of staff but there was no one there. I let myself out and made sure front door was securely shut as per notice on door!
- Helen (6/5): Not my choice next time, but if you love noisy parties, it’s very convenient to get to your room afterwards - Location Sooo much noise from the live music until midnight
- Jojic (7/5): -
- Karl (1/5): Disappointing - Central location Bare lighting without the option of switching on/off from the bed, old deco, noise from the pub downstairs. The room was quite unlike the photos. An item of property was left in the room, i told them on the phone and in their online review system selecting the 'contact me' option - they didn't.
- Neil (7/5): Enjoyed the stay Would go again. - Nice clean room Was not a problem but my single room had a shared bathroom
- Janet (1/5): -
- Jamie (10/5): -
- Peter (9/5): -
- Anthony (7/5): - Clean, pleasant staff. Location in the town centre was good and close to the theatre we visited for a concert. Bar closed early.
- WILLIAM (4/5): .way to basic for the £50 charged - The location was good The room was not en-suit which was fair enough, but the wash basin had no plug, the shower/bathroom and the two shared toilets had no sink in any of them . This requires you go back to your room to wash your hands
- Michelle (9/5): Over all great night. Lovely location and good night life. Friendly locals. Fantastic - Very comfortable beds and good location Shower was to small
- Martin (8/5): -
- Stephen (8/5): - Quick and easy check-in
Friendly staff. Tv in room but no remote.
Shower cubicle on the small side
- Briggs (7/5): -
- Moore (9/5): -
- James (8/5): Lovely Family Room in a good location. Staff really helpful when we phoned prior to our arrival. - Staff extremely friendly, and room was clean. Good location and good facilities in the family room. NA
- Stacey (8/5): -
- Sean (8/5): -
- william (8/5): -
- Julie (6/5): Comfortable bed - Bed was comfortable, staff friendly. The lighting in the room was very poor ,only 1 main light in the room ,no bedside lamps .had to open the sliding door of the shower and toilet room for extra light ..in need of a face lift to be honest.
- Matthew (7/5): . - . .
- Guinn (5/5): - The room didn't have a toilet or a shower. No toilet and no shower
- Scott (7/5): -
- Tony (3/5): Needs some work but if you need to lie down it’s one to consider - The location of the property was excellent. Right in the centre of town. A number of things we didn’t like about the property.
The rooms are a bit tired and are in need of updating.
There was a loud noise outside our window from a refrigeration fan which I think was cooling the beer cellar. This was intermittent all night on and off.
The staff were noisy at closing time outside the windows. I accept that work need to be done as this is a public house however if you are aware you have guests staying the noise could be kept to a minimum.
We were travelling with a group of 7 of us in separate rooms. We had a young child who was well received by the staff at the property. Although I. The morning we were told by a member of staff that the child was not allowed in the bar after 9:00pm as it was illegal and it would upset the locals. I fully accept this is the case and is a fair thing to say and leeway was given to us for this. However I was quite annoyed about the comment as earlier in the day we were in the beer garden and it was noted that the person who was telling me the law behind this was the same person who was smoking Cannabis at the rear of the beer garden whilst our 3 year old granddaughter was in the area. I found this to be a gross contradiction.
That said the staff were helpful and respectful. The pub had a friendly atmosphere. I have to say I would not stay here again but for the price of the rooms you get what you pay for.
- Rach (1/5): - Barnard Castle Property room was awful came home could not stay there
- caroline (5/5): - Location Smoking area below our room so window had to closed
Small shower
Toilet is in the room with a sliding ?door
Nothing "deluxe" about the room
- Geoff (10/5): Enjoyed stay, staff were very helpfull - Location good for town centre Sold as a twin room but no en-suite website confusing
- stuart (1/5): Not a good for the £80 spent for 1 night. I’ve been using booking.com for years and never complained. So i fully expect - In the centre of town Scruffy room and decor
No soap or shower soaps, shower ran cold, ran it for 10 mins but still cold.
En-suite sliding door broken and would not close.
No staff available downstairs in pub to ask or complain.
Very very noisy loud music from pub downstairs, could not sleep as too loud.
- Illman (4/5): Disappointed - The location was perfect for our purposes. The beds were comfortable. The pub did go quiet after 10.30pm but it was very noisy beforehand. Very loud music. There was very loud music playing when trying to book in. The person behind the bar seemed to be the only member of staff and was very rushed. The room was OK but the music from below could clearly be heard. There was no remote for the TV apparently it's on order, but there was nowhere to plug in the aerial! There was no wifi. Problem with the hub I was told. Very disappointing. When it came to checking out we had been told by the member of staff who booked us in, to leave by the back door not through the pub. This was rather complicated but we found our way out through a building site at the back and came round the side. At the front door we were met by a fellow resident(?) Who said we should have exited through the bar by the front door. I gave the keys to him and he said he would pass them on. Highly unsatisfactory.
- Jennifer (7/5): - Clean linen and towels friendly staff, decent room., comfortable bed Noisy till 10 at night, couldnt get TV to work, noisy doors and creaky floors but for the price .
- Jane (2/5): Think what we didn't like sums it up. - The bedding and towels were clean. No hot water in the shower. Smallest of bathrooms. Wifi that hardly works. Told there was a car park around the back which ended up as parking on a pavement. Could go on.
