Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location, just overpriced restaurant - The location of the hotel is good. The stairs down the the rooms is built for somebody with long legs and the ramp - not sure if that is for a wheel chair which I will never use. The restaurant is very over priced and its really not great food. The food at Mrs Simpson is WAY better. The fire place, having a vent right on top, the room was always smelling of smoke. Rooms do all need a little TLC. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
- Andries (10/5): Excellent for families - Excellent hotel for a family stop-over on the way back from Kruger. Friendly staff, excellent service, great facilities and an awesome restaurant!
- Jarred (10/5): - Great room. Lovely staff
- hylke (10/5): Excellent - Excellent service and Hotel, stunning staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good trip - Was good
- Verified traveler (2/5): -
- susan (10/5): - AWESOME WEEKEND AWAY - GREAT BOUTIQUE TYPE HOTEL ATTENTION TO DETAIL
- Johan (10/5): Great - Great place great time
- Jeremy (10/5): A Christmas Delight - Stayed in hotel 23rd December to 26th December 2019 with my partner and her mum.It was a beautiful experience. Both rooms where very good and met our expectations. The hotel grounds where beautiful and relaxing and felt very secure. The hotel staff where very professional and helpful. The food was of the highest standard and Christmas Day dinner at the hotel was a wonderful experience, sharing the day with the owners and their family friends and guests. I would recommend a stay at this hotel and experience the delights of the hotel and area. A big thank you to the owners and their family for being so welcoming and helpful to make our stay such a pleasure and being so kind.
- Pieter (8/5): - Lovely fireplace in the room. Room nice but a bit tired in places, broken blind, gaffer tape on the step up to the bathroom, and bathroom could do with a renovation.
- Fumito (10/5): - Water was not clear but others were perfect!
- Owen (4/5): In effective communication - I had a problem on my arrival as I was informed that my reservation was not in place!
I was also made to sign the manual credit card printed slips, which I have never done before when booking through hotel.com!
I am scared of a possible double charge!
- Terblanche (8/5): Very good property with friendly staff - Check in a little slow, the hotel could not find our reservation. Other than that, staff very friendly and helpful, beautiful property and nice breakfast.
- Paul (10/5): - Amazingly friendly hotel with very comfortable accommodation.
- Simon (10/5): Highland hideaway. - Well worth spoiling yourself if you’re ever in Dullstroom with undoubtedly the best boutique hotel in the area. Fireplaces in rooms just add to that extra bit of comfort. A very special hideaway.
- Christopher (10/5): Lovely place for a Dullstroom getaway - Lovely spot, nice management and team
- Albert (6/5): Some work needed - Upon arrival we were disappointed in that many of the items / features that were published on the booking sites were in fact not offered. Contrary to what was advertised, there was no airconditioning, coffee maker, in-room telephone, Wi-Fi in rooms nor luxury bedding. In fact, the bedding was almost threadbare with a hostel-type blanket underneath the duvet to give some warmth. The mattress on our bed needed replacement.
We highlighted this to the current managers. Their explanations made it clear why the features were not available and why the buildings were in need of urgent maintenance. Apparently the hotel group had been liquidated and was recently taken over by new owners. Efforts are underway to catch up with a two-year backlog of neglect.
The rooms but especially the common areas have a luxurious and classy feel. Rooms are huge but as mentioned need some maintenance. The spirit of the managers who were apparently appointed two weeks prior to our stay, made our stay memorable one. The breakfast was outstanding and all staff offered service with a smile.
I am confident that advertised quality and a 5 star rating might be achieved.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place - Was great and very comfortable. Rooms very nice and spacious.
- Gerardus (8/5): Hög klass!! - Utmärkt boende i många bemärkelse. Tyvärr blev det enbart en natt denna gången men skall säkerligen boka en längre vistelse när området besökes igen.
- CARL (10/5): Fantastic palace - This hotel is amazing. The staff couldn't do enough for you.
We were made to feel like lord and lady.
Drinks were very reasonable in price.
Although we were the only guests in the hotel the staff were still as enthusiastic as if the place was full.
We stayed in suite 1 it was amazing. Had a fire in the fireplace in the evening very romantic.
Definitely would stay here again should we ever be in the area.
We also went to a whiskey tasting just down the road .. well worth a couple of hours.
- Marie Monique (8/5): Great location for Dullstroom - The hotel was convenient for our overnight stay in Dullstroom.
However the hotel room was looking tired and could do with a revamp.
Staff member Simon was excellent and had great Public Relations skills.
However the staff member on duty at Reception forgot our request for one teabag
which was disappointing.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful rooms and very accommodating people. Very good breakfast. Close to town we walked. Wild about whisky is worth a trip.
- Cheryl (8/5): Pleasant stop over - Overnight stop over
Really nice suite breakfast was excellent
- Wendy (4/5): Unimpressed - Bed was hard. TV remote didn't work and had to ask twice to get it resolved. room was average. No water on morning of departure. No wireless in the rooms. Lamp next to bed stopped working. Breakfast was below average. Not what I would expect from a 5 star rating or even 4 stars.
- Lena (6/5): - The sleeper couch was uncomfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great cosy cottage! - Extremely great value for money. Attractive little town for a stopover to/from Kruger. Very quiet and restful. Great service.
- Jim (2/5): Fawlty Towers in Dullstroom. - This hotel was Fawlty Towers in Dullstroom. The breakfast for five people took over an hour to arrive in pieces. First of all no service, followed by a request for tea and coffee, and finally the breakfast itself, which came in dribs and drabs, after lengthy delays in between, like hot meal first, for two people, then one more, then the final two. After a lengthy delay, we got the teas and coffees, and long after the hot meals, came the toasts. The waiter was nice but badly trained, and the manager hovered in the background, basically doing nothing.
Never again!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Dirty and old, acute need of refurbishment - This was the worst hotel we've ever stayed at. Full of flies and insects in the ceiling and when we tell the porter he just tells us to use the insect spray in the room. If we had come to stay here 40 years ago, it would probably have been nice, but nothing seems to have been done to furniture, bed and bathroom since then. Even the bed linen seemed to have been used since a very long time ago and the napkins which we got at breakfast were so used that there were holes in them. We expexted a 4-star hotel which we paid for but got a 2-star hotel at the most, which should have cost us less than half of what we paid. We are very dissapointed and feel that we have been "tricked" into booking this hotel. The bartender was a nice exception to the very bad experience of this hotel.
- Lorraine (8/5): Picturesque hotel - We had an enjoyable stay at the Highlander Hotel, elegant decor, very spacious rooms and bathrooms, friendly staff and ideal location to the town. We had one evening meal there, the menu was quite small but the food was nicely presented and there are lots of restuarants in Dullstroom to try.
- christo (10/5): - Great, the furniture can be upgrated.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Classy and comfortable
- Rachel (4/5): - I was actually very dissappointed.
For the money we paid. It was a let down.
Our room was not clean at all.
Sheets dirty.
The room needed some TLC.
If it wasnt for how good the staff was. It would have been awful.
- Jean (10/5): Excellence Beyond Expectation! - We went there for our 10year wedding anniversary, as Dullstroom close enough to ride with our Harleys.
The Hotel is even nicer than on the photo's, the service was superb, the food was excellent and prepared precisely to request even when we had special requests!
The rooms aren't rooms, their like little apartments! Really large, very private, just perfect! Awesome large fireplace stocked daily with ample wood, so to spend an eve with bottle of wine in front of a crackling fire is a perfect way to end your day.
The balcony is as large as some homes' bedrooms, so really also awesome to sit there on a warm summer's eve and enjoy nature.
Very seldomly that one is surprised ABOVE expectation with a hotel or restaurant in South Africa, the Higlander will certainly be my ONLY choice next time we visit Dullstroom!!
- Leanne (8/5): Great staff, excellent cuisine - Had a lovely stay. The staff are excellent, and the food exceptional.
- Basil (8/5): - Ok overall, but the towels supplied in your Luxury units were very small indeed, more 2 or 3 start level,.
- David (10/5): - We really enjoyed our two-night stay at the Highlander. Pleasantly landscaped grounds, very good accommodation and helpful, very friendly service. Our car was washed before we left without us having asked for this or having to pay for it. Breakfast was excellent the first morning but staff struggled a little to keep up with the demands of a large group the second morning.
- Dimitri (8/5): - Pleasant hotel, well located and friendly willing staff. Huge rooms and bathrooms.
- Katerina (10/5): Wonderful hotel!!!!Will definitely go back. - Stayed there for 5 nights and we enjoyed every minute of it.
- Cheryl (8/5): Highly recommend if visiting Dullstroom - We stayed as a weekend break, playing golf.
The suite was lovely and cosy with plenty of wood for the fire at night when it got cold.
The staff were welcoming and friendly. Our breakfast was excellent
Our only criticism was dinner - expensive for what we got, portions small and very disappointing.A nice touch in the morning was our car was cleaned
Would recommend
- Thomas (10/5): Lovely place with European charm - Our family stayed in one of the cottages (room 12) and really enjoyed the place. Excellent food, nice facility, two bathrooms and four bedrooms (sleeping up to 8 people).
Feels like a home away from home.
- Duncan (6/5): hotel ok restaurant and service great - Stayed in a standard room and was a little disappointed. For a high rating like the hotel has the sheets were stained and all round not great. Restaurant was AWESOME.
- Simon (10/5): Don't miss 'wild about whiskey!' - Excellent hotel in a very quaint little drinking village with a massive fishing problem.
- Verified traveler (8/5): great stay - wht a wonderful stay. Will definitely go face. Staff are very attentive and the good is absolutely divine
- Tracey (10/5): Incredible experience - We had the most enjoyable stay. We arrived during load shedding and was upgraded to a suite with a fireplace to keep the cold away. Even though they had no power they were able to offer dinner as their kitchens are equipped with gas. The service from John was friendly and professional. I will definetly refer all my family , friends and clients. Thank you for making my Anniversary very special.
- Patricia (6/5): Good option for couples, not kids friendly - The hotel is lovely, but should not advertise that they are suited for families with young children. The hotel offers no facilities for children or any entertainment for children. The hotel menue also does not offer any meals for kids.. which was a bit disappointing..
The hotel is a lovely option for a romantic get away for a couple, but not
with kids.
The spa experience was also a disappointment, as the spa facilities/ equipment are very dated and old/ worn.. (the towels used were warn and dated, the bed cover was torn, the therapist was very friendly but not professionally trained)
- Taryn (8/5): Anniversary weekend - We absolutely loved our stay at the Highlander. The staff did anything and everything they could for us, the food was fantastic and the whole environment was so calming and relaxing. A nice warm cozy weekend in winter! Will definitely stay again!
- R Lindley (8/5): AN IDEAL STOPOVER - We were upgraded as we were not prepared to stay in accommodation with no safe. The suite was very comfortable, although we had to ask for a sheet to be changed. The cuisine was of a high standard and the staff were eager to please. I spoke to the Manager about some of our concerns and he was very responsive. We'll visit again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Bad Experience - not 5stars! - I can't believe the Hotel is 5 stars. After 10minutes we booked out and checked into Walkersons which was much much better!
