Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Gorgeous cottage with lots of character, low ceilings in areas but you soon learnt to dodge. All part of the character. Stair banister rail stunning character made from drift wood. All rooms on suite so no fighting over bathrooms and a jacuzzi bath downstairs.
The owners were very welcoming and full book with instructions on arrival. As well as lots of ideas of places to visit.
Fresh milk in the fridge on arrival and the added dry herbs etc in the kitchen added to the homely feel for the week.
We would happily book this cottage again as in the middle no where away from noise, surrounded by meadows with footpaths and woodland. 15min drive away there is a beautiful lake to do water sports on, we took our paddle boards. Closest beaches are 30min drive away at Bude. This is a hidden gem.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property is absolute gem located in a tranquil setting away from the hustle of the busy city life, exactly what we were looking for. We were not let down in any aspect and found everything as seen in the pictures and described in the advertisement.
It would have been a great stay but what made it truly exceptional was the warm hospitality of Jane, Duncan and their family (hosts at the property). We will definitely plan another trip soon.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was pure chocolate box. The rooms were very spacious n homely. The Breakfast was so filling n amazing. I've been a chef all my life n the breakfast was the best I've ever tasted. Thank you Duncan you can certainly cook.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The breakfasts are amazing very large and tasty home cooked organic food
- Tricia (10/5): Great place to stay - We had a fantastic stay at Hay Meadow Farm. It is an amazing old farm in a remote area. The room was very comfortable and clean and had been furnished to a high spec. The breakfasts were amazing - we certainly didn't/ couldn't eat at lunchtime. There was not just quantity but quality as well. Highly recommended all round
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What a stunning location. Such a beautiful hideaway, the children loved staying in the cottage. We were made to feel very welcome
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Tranquil location, unique property, not very often you get to stay in property with so much character
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a beautiful property where we were made very welcome, the breakfast will set you up for an entire day at the very least!
It is in the middle of the countryside and trust your GPS - even if the final roads appear a little unlikely
Very much recommended
- Anna (10/5): Lovely setup - Lovely find
Duncan and his family very welcoming
Comfiest bed ever !
The breakfast was fantastic really good produce and plenty of it .
Will def return in the future :)
- Cathy (10/5): - It was great happy to visit & stay there again in the future, lovey comfy bed great bathroom, fantastic breakfast, beautiful quiet scenic location saw deer & different types of birds which was lovely as we love wildlife.
- Maz (10/5): - Fantastic atmosphere, extremely helpful, will be going back in the near future. Brilliant !
- Kieran (10/5): Very relaxing - We both enjoyed our stay. Duncan is very welcoming and a brilliant chef. The breakfast is perfect and will fill you up for the day! Dark sky area so great for stargazing. Log burner stove in the bedroom keeps you cosy and warm all night. And VERY a quiet area :) Tall people be careful. This is a traditional thatched cottage and being over 6ft I banged my head a few times :p Will definitely return!
- Adele (10/5): One place not to miss. - Outstanding locations, staff and accommodation. Made us feel so welcome.
- Brirny (10/5): - This was our second time staying at Hay Meadow and it was just as fantastic as the first! Duncan and Jane are running it well!Alot bigger then the first timr but looking forward to seeing you in another few years and see what else you get done
- Iab (10/5): - Lovely thatched old farmhouse in a stunning rural location. We stayed in the Clover room with log burner and jacuzzi bath. Beautiful rooms in keeping with the building, lovely furniture and fittings, very clean and extremely comfortable. Incredible breakfast, so tasty, obviously quality produce, and beautifully presented on hot plates showing the all round attention to detail. Additional items, eg. cereal, jam, were not out, but everthing available on request. Overall it was a superb, relaxing weekend. Some may find it a little too laid back, but we found it in keeping with the whole experience.
- Perry (10/5): Beautiful lovely stay - Beautiful quiet location and even with 2 young roudy kids they still loved it!
Hosts were perfect, house and room very cosy and breakfast absolutely spot on and a proper fry up!
I will be coming back if ever in the area again.
- Keith (10/5): Comfortable B&B - From the big cozy organic bed to the fantastic organic breakfast everything about the Hay Meadow was wonderful. A little of the beaten path but not so far that you couldn’t get any where in a reasonable time. The view up the valley was stunning and the peace and quite just what we wanted.
- Hay (8/5): Nice family run cottage - Very welcoming and helpful hosts. Lots of choice for breakfast and cooked to your liking. Good value for money and they were more than happy for us to check in later than normal. A lovely location even though we had to brave the narrow and winding roads to get there!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful place in a great location for exploring the area. Friendly people. Delicious full English breakfast. Be aware the old home has low ceilings. Only other negative is the small shower. I am a big and tall man so this place wasn't right for me but I would recommend it for anyone not quite as tall.
- Marc (10/5): A hidden gem - A true gem. Amazing rooms, food and owned by a fantastic family.
- Andrew (10/5): Quiet night away - Outstanding find and beautiful room and location - breakfast was fantastic and it was so lovely sleeping in the countryside with no sounds - view of the meadow in the morning was beautiful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful peaceful location. Fabulous room with extremely comfy bed. Delicious locally sourced breakfast. Duncan and Jane were excellent hosts. Would definitely return.
- Paul (10/5): Family Short Break - Our stay was fabulous. Duncan’s breakfasts are the stuff of legends. His Sunday roast lamb could have fed an army. Wonderful stay in a wonderful place. We will be back
- Erika (10/5): Authentic & Awesome - Amazing stay. This was the best night we had in England on our 14 day grand tour. Jane & Duncan were great. Friendly- met our every need and even offered for us to dine with them during a staff and pre/Easter dinner. We opted for a local pub (janes recommendation) which was fabulous and returned to light a fire (stayed in the clover room) which was a real treat and had a few local lagers (also janes recommendation) from their bar. Duncan made us the most fabulous full English breakfast in the morning. Nothing was too much for them and their farmhouse was simply amazing. They managed to keep So many authentic features of the thatched cottage and made it perfect for guests. I can not recommend hay meadow more! You will love it!
- Nicola (10/5): Amazing! - What an amazing little find! Beautiful throughout, clean, gorgeous setting and the best breakfast ever! Run by a lovely couple and their wonderful children we will definitely be back again! We got stranded in the recent snow and had to stay an extra night last minute and couldn't get out to get food and they made us an amazing roast dinner which was above and beyond! Highly recommend!
- Justin (10/5): Relaxed and charming farmhouse with great food - Hay Meadow Farm is an idyllic 12th century farmhouse nestled in the most peaceful and beautiful Devon countryside. The welcome is warm and food (served in the adjacent restaurant) is well worth the wait. We have been back to explore the local area and I'm sure we'll back again soon - super relaxing.
- jamie (10/5): - Amazing room & lovely people & great food...
- Kevin + Anne (10/5): Fantastic - Great food, Great people, Great place. Nothing was too much trouble
- Ricky (10/5): Devon weekend away - Had a great time
Will be back soon !!
- marie (10/5): Love it - Me and my husband have been twice to this hotel and we both love it. It's so peaceful, great people and fabulous food. We are hoping to come back very soon. Thank you!
- kevin (8/5): - nice place, lovely breakfast
- Queen B (10/5): Beautifully restored thatched farmhouse - Two days of rest and peace in this beautifully restored historical farmhouse. It's a very casual atmosphere with attentive, friendly and welcoming owners. It actually had a feel as though you were visiting family that you love seeing! The breakfast was amazing. We are going to be dreaming about the sausages (locally sourced) forever. I would recommend at least one meal there. Just heavenly locally sourced steak which was cooked beautifully, so much food we were stuffed!
The walks are refreshing and it's a great base to visit all over Devon and into Cornwall.
We would recommend in a heartbeat if you're looking for quiet time. The house itself has only 4 rooms I believe. Our room was comfortable and clean with lovely farmhouse feel furnishings. The shower was hot and powerful.
I could have stayed for so much longer and will be going back with our family when they visit from Australia. Thank you to the wonderful host, Duncan for making a memorable stay!
- Cathy (10/5): Quiet hideaway - We enjoyed a very peaceful stay at Hay Meadow. Although the farm is along bumpy roads and a four-by-four would have been welcome, this was more than compensated by the peace and tranquillity of the setting. The facilities were good and very comfortable. The breakfast menu was vast and the food fresh and tasty.
- DEAN (10/5): Very relaxing stay - .Hay medow farm is a lovely peaceful place to visit. Duncan is a fantastic host where nothing is too much trouble. His breakfasts are amazing! Can't recommend highly enough.
- Benjamin (10/5): Idyllic Homely Hideaway! - We had a lovely stay at Hay Meadow Farm. The room was fantastic, the hospitality was second-to-none (perfectly attentive, but also comfortably laid-back), and the food was great too!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful family farmhouse - lovingly restored! - Lovely stay in a beautiful farmhouse - absolutely delightful. Our room was cosy, comfy and clean. The meals were organic and homemade and without a doubt superb in quality and size! The owners Duncan and Jane have obviously put a tremendous amount of hard work, time, effort, thought and love into their project of making their home into the place it is! The lovely stripped beams and staircase were a treat to the eye. This lovely organic farmhouse and grounds certainly have the 'Wow' factor and absolutely deserves a visit to appreciate all its qualities and quirks!! Would thoroughly recommend!
- The Fidlers (10/5): Excellent, bucolic rural stay - My wife and I just had two nights in Lavender, the refurbished wagon set towards the rear of the farm. It's lovely, with wood burning stove, comfy pull out bed which was ample for two people (althought I wouldn't want to be 6ft or taller! There is a fire pit outside with supplied logs, which we spent a very pleasant evening next to. All in all, the accommdation was very good - the one quiblle i'd have with the wagon was that the bathroom you have (obviously away from the wagon), was at the back of the restaurant - not ideal if you want an early night or similar but we had no real problems on that front.
The real joy of this place, however, are the people - Duncan is truly the host with the most, and couldn't do enough for everyone, i can't praise him enough, but everyone else we dealt with was also top notch. Take a bow guys :)
Must also mention the restaurant, as the food was quite sensational. Honestly. Breakfast was magnificent, the steaks we had on the Friday were top notch (as were all the fresh veggies and salad from the farms own organic gardens), so we stayed for Sunday roast as well - never have i had 9 different vegetables with some sparklingly good roast chicken, but i will again. The bar for a roast has been raised.
We both loved it, and will definitely return - talking with other guests everyone was of the same opinion. One couple had been 6 times in 18 months!
Thanks again,
Grant & Sarah
- Justin and Claire (10/5): On oasis in the West Country - From the minute we arrived we felt a very warm welcome in this charming place. The room in the cottage was excellent and cosy. Dinner in the restaurant was absolutely superb, made from locally sourced meat and home produce. Breakfast was similarly of the highest quality. A beautiful place and we really hope that we can return sometime soon.
- Gareth (10/5): - Absolutely wonderful stay!!!
A relaxed and chilled atmosphere, mingled with warm, kind hosts made for a spectacular vacation
- Steve (10/5): Beautiful property, well located and very relaxing - I guarantee you'll want to take a photo of this place before you leave and I expect you will want to go back.
- Michael (10/5): Couldn't be better - For the type of stay you can't ask for better. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. Owner was helpful and always had our interests in mind.
Stayed in the wagon which although was a little small (only thing I can say which might not agree with people) was a lovely change and would recommend.
All round one of the best stays Ive had. Go visit.
- Gill (4/5): More Like a Bed and Breakfast than Hotel - Unfortunately I did think for the price of the room the service fell very short of hotel standards, I would have rated this accommodation as a Bed and Breakfast.
- Jeff n Sara (8/5): Old house full of character - Be aware though that this is not a farm with animals.
- Lisa (6/5): Fabulous 12th century farm - Warm welcome from a dreadful journey down. Room was a. It cold but owners did resolve this. We had booked a meal which was wonderful. Fabulous place - our own restaurant but was called a cafe as will eventually be catering for all 3 meals as well as a farm shop. Fresh produce everywhere!
Weather wasn't so great for our stay but that's bank holidays for you!
- Gail (10/5): Perfect - Everything was perfect - breakfast was the best ever
- mark (10/5): - lovely place , great friendly people, best breakfast ever , don't take your low sports car
- Beverley (8/5): Great hotel with huge character - We were offered an upgrade to a lovely room with log burner, which was great except the central heating wasn't working so the bathroom was cold. Other than that we had a great stay & a fabulous cooked breakfast the next morning. Make sure you checkout the directions, as it's very remote & quite difficult to find otherwise.
- Lyndsay (10/5): A great place to get away from it all .... - Hay Meadow Farm is a wonderful place - the atmosphere is serene and it is so quiet there, with no traffic or other noise to disturb the feeling of peace and comfort which descends on you as you enter the house. When I returned to my room at the end of each day it felt welcoming, and like being wrapped in a lovely warm duvet! The room I booked was very comfy and tasteful. Duncan's breakfasts are a treat, and I have never had a better full English breakfast - kept me going all day! This is a very special place.
- Amy (10/5): - Charming historic thatched cottage in a lovely pastoral setting. Our room had low beamed ceiling with a fireplace. Like waking up inside a painting. Public rooms were very comfortable and the hosts very friendly and helpful. Somewhat difficult to get to but many side trips possible once you know where you are.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Outstanding place to stay with first class service
