Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Todo correcto, buen trato y servicio. Todo a mano, muy cerca del centro, a tan solo cinco minutos andando.
- RUTE (10/5): Excelente - Fui muito bem recebida. O casal dono do hotel me esperavam na porta. Gentis e atenciosos. Recomendo esse hotel a todos que visitarem Viana do Castelo.
- Gilto (8/5): - Ótima localização, bom café da manhã, bom atendimento, e tudo limpo.
- Christian (8/5): Just passing by. - The reservation was found after a small disorder in the hotel's system. Some of the interiors have seen their best days but otherwise a friendly staff and atmosphere.
- Fernando (8/5): Holidays - It was a good experience.
The price of the room was very expensive.
- NWRunner (8/5): Quaint welcoming hotel - This place had a lot of character – antique radio beside the bed, plumbing external in our private bath. The room was comfortable and clean and had endless hot water. While we enjoyed our balcony, we suggest you request the OTHER side of the hotel as the trains and highway tunnel make a lot of noise. The town is small so it is easy to walk under the train to the downtown area where most restaurants are.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Très bon accueil
- Ritchie (4/5): OK but over-priced - The Calatrava is ok, the short walk into town is perfectly acceptable, but I do consider it over-priced, probably due to a lack of rooms in Viana.
- andreea (10/5): Great location, good value for money - Great location and customer service. The gentleman at the desk was very knowledgeable and kind to give us lots of tips about the area. Basic breakfast and the bed was a bit small ( probably a queen bed), but apart that we were happy with our stay. Good value for money with a great big balcony!
- JDupree924 (10/5): Nice clean hotel, great location - This is nice modern hotel close to the centre and near a main road but very quite and comfortable. The owner is a really nice gentleman, with good English, who kindly held on to some things I left in the room which probably would have been thrown out on the day in another establishment. The room was big with a comfortable bed, good sized bathroom and good Wi-Fi. The hotel is only about 100metres from the funicular or steps up to the Santa Luz church on the hill above, which provides an awesome panoramic view of the district. A great base for exploring the Minho region
- FRANCISCO (8/5): - Pessoal super simpatico............
- Victor (10/5): Hotel parfais et pas cher ;-) - Séjour impeccable, personnel au petit soin et très sympathique.
- Francisco (6/5): - Simpatia e disponibilidade do pessoal!
- BobN833 (6/5): Nice, Quaint, off bridge - A nice hotel with old world charm. Well-maintained. The owner was very nice. My biggest complaints are that there was no fan or air-conditioner in the room. As a result I had to leave the terrace door open so the air didn't get stuffy but my room was facing the road coming off the bridge so the traffic sound was loud.
- Bequia1 (8/5): Sweet, central, comfortable - I stumbled into the center of Viana do Castelo tired, wet and exhausted, while walking the Camino Portuguese. Hence I felt lucky to come upon this small, centrally located hotel. It was nothing large or fancy, but I felt comfortable and cared for. I also appreciated the building's interesting, faintly deco architecture, with its portholes and pretty yellow awnings. I've stayed in plenty of city hotels in Europe where I've felt rather invisible; this one had just a little something more to recommend it.
- BillC8 (8/5): A lucky find - After walking the Camino de Santiago, we rented a car there and headed south into Portugal. We wanted to drink port in Porto. But, Porto was way too busy so we headed back north and stumbled into the port town of Viana do Castelo. It's a major fishing village where the river empties into the Atlantic and filled with great restaurants, cafes and bars. And, my wife agrees, nice shops as well. Beautiful river park, many historic sites and very nice people. Especially Valdemar, the host at this hotel. He made sure we could have either the west or east looking room. We ended up one night in each. He made sure we knew our way around town, gave us recommendations on restaurants and was all-around a very attentive host.
- Paul (6/5): On tour - A little tired to eye and nose
- 304jeanpascalc (8/5): no fuss and convenient - just returned from a week in northern portugal on the 12th of september 2013
had booked one night at calatrava ended up spending 2!
had a chance of choice of rooms. went for the one at the front of the hotel with balcony convenient if you somoke
car park right outside the hotel great.
I thought it was pleasant and good value .great town to walk , lots to do and see....j.p
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value for the money - We received a very warm welcome and hotelier was most helpful and friendly. Hotel clean and tidy if a bit dated. Location excellent with easy access into the old town which is busy with many good restaurants, bars, shops and interesting museums. The only downsides for us were a too small bed and the hourly nearby bells ringing.
- clarksdale (6/5): Go with the majority view - I would like to contradict the review on April 4. The wifi works well, the rooms do not smell, there are restaurants within a 5 min walk and the man at the front desk was courteous, helpful and full of suggestions for authentic places to eat/drink (I can only assume the earlier contributor was directed to a food mall because the hotel man thought he would prefer eating at McDonalds or Pizza Hut)
The rooms are small, clean and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast is basic Portuguese bread/cheese/coffee etc, served in a well presented dining room. It is well priced. A 10 min walk will take you to the centre of town, with many bars/restaurants. It is a good, basic, hotel and value for money.
I would ignore the review written in April and take heed of the majority view
- Vinnie (10/5): Top small hotel - Helpful landlord & good area
- JaimeM619 (2/5): Would not recommend to anyone - The place smelled awful, the wifi they advertise would not work in our room. The restaurant was closed very early so we could not have dinner upon our arrival at 9 pm or so and the man at the front desk could only recommend a mall food court for us to go and eat at. The front desk is not open 24 hours so we basically had a curfew. He said 12 or 1 he would close the front desk but when we arrived back to the hotel around 11 pm it was already all locked up and we had to buzz to get in, and the man looked annoyed with us for that even though this was one of the places in Portugal that we paid the most to stay. The location was out of the way with nothing around it as far as restaurants or bars to have a drink in. We did not enjoy our stay at hotel Calatrava. The rooms were old and smelly and did not have a warm welcoming feeling to them.
- Oxontim (8/5): Very convenient and basically good - Arrived late in Viana from Oporto airport without booking. Immediately welcomed and made to feel at ease - received good urgent advice on a late meal venue. The room on the first floor was very basic, not that big, but clean. The hotel went to great lengths to heat room for unexpected guests! The breakfast was usual bland cheese and meat slice - could have been better. But the value is there overall.
- CarsonParkRanger (10/5): On the edge of the old quarter of the city... - We had a lovely room with a balcony, but the busy street and the proximity of the rail were not a problem. The traffic all but disappears after rush hour, and the trains do not run late. Very close to the beautiful, old downtown, with a pleasant breakfast included. We very much enjoyed our two nights at Calatrava
