Guest Reviews
- Jeremy (10/5): - As a first time bnb guest, I loved it. James and Connie were very welcoming and made for great conversation during breakfast with the other guests. So much history in the house and area. We spent most of our time in Abingdon - antiquing, dining, and the barter theater. Apparently there's much to discover in Damascus for next time though! We valued the private bathroom in the honeymoon suite, but FYI does not have a shower just a tub, but there was a public shower down the hall. Thanks guys for a great time!
- Phillip (10/5): - Beautiful property and friendly. Not far from Bristol Motor speedway. Enjoyed stay tremendously
- Melanie (10/5): Delicious breakfast and friendly owners - Delicious large breakfast made by friendly and welcoming owners, served family style. Eclectic furniture and antiques initiated good conversation and interesting stories. The Honeymoon Suite was large and the bed was very comfortable. The en-suite was nice and clean but it’s important to note there is no shower. You can use the shower downstairs or use the included bath. Not a big deal unless you want to wash your hair. The grounds could be lovely but are somewhat dilapidated and very much need attention. A nice stay overall.
- Steve (10/5): - I enjoyed my stay at the Millsap Baker Estate. The room and bath were very clean, and the atmosphere was peaceful. I learned alot about the history of the estate and Damascus from the owners.
- Sarah (10/5): - The hosts were very nice and the facilities were beautiful. Will definitely be back
- George (10/5): - The four-bedroom house was well appointed; the kitchen is huge. Get the Honeymoon suite if you can it's immense! The c.1880s decorations in the B&B are impressive. The broad back deck is very large. Access was easy and convenient. Laundry on the first level.
James' breakfasts are to die for, especially the hot biscuits and sausage gravy. James grew up here and knows all to be known. It's within a mile of downtown Damascus and across the street from a supermarket. Very convenient in all ways. Hiking trails, including the AT and Virginia Creeper are next door as is a cross country biking route. I was here for the AT's annual Trail Days celebration.
- Dianna (10/5): - The hosts were charming and the B&B was wonderful. Clean, friendly, delicious homemade breakfast. Bed was comfortable. Will definitely visit again!
- Kevin (10/5): - Super cute place with incredibly nice owners
- Karen (10/5): - Loved the history and construction of this historic house. The bed was very comfortable and breakfast was excellent.
- Lewis (10/5): - Beautiful property and the owners are exceptionally kind and thoughtful hosts!
- Adam (8/5): - This bnb was very unique and the hosts were great. Only con was the shared bathroom between 3 bedrooms with other guests.
- Paula (10/5): - We loved the kind and courteous owners. They went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and welcome. The food was excellent. Very sweet and happy owners. We will definitely stay here again.
- Bryan (8/5): - Owner was really nice, talk with him a couple hours at breakfast. Room was gpod bathroom well stocked and clean.
- Asmund (10/5): - The Millsap is an old estate with charm and beauty.
- Kathy (4/5): - Nice people but not maintained
- Terry (10/5): - James and Connie are wonderful hosts. We had refreshing conversation and yummy breakfasts. The MB Estate is in need of some TLC but is lovely and something fascinating awaits at every nook and cranny. The honeymoon suite is expansive and well appointed. We highly recommend a stay at MB Estate!
- Maureen (10/5): A beautiful place to stay in Damascus! - I had a beautiful stay at the Millsap-Baker Estate B&B. When I arrived, there was a note telling me to how to find my bedroom. It also told me about snacks and drinks that were available, as well as the time for breakfast in the morning. There was the phone number for the owners for any needs. The covered porch was a very peaceful place to rock I. The rocking chair and watch the birds. I sat and read my book for quite a while. Every room is decorated with amazing antique furniture! The bed was super comfortable! The shower had great water pressure. There were 3 other couples there at the time but I had no idea until the next morning, because it was so quiet. The home is located very close to the beautiful town of Damascus and the Virginia creeper trail so there are many activities if you like to hike the AT, bike the creeper trail or fish in the creek. I hope to come back again and bring my family!
- Alexander (10/5): Excellent stay - One night stay, had the whole place to ourselves. Very comfortable and charming; breakfast cooked by host with some jams made on the property. Very charming
- lisa (6/5): - We never saw anyone working there or the owners just got a note on the door at check in . Then no breakfast not even a way to get a cup of coffee because the cook was sick. Just saw a note on the door saying he was sick and to get some fruit. Only fruit was really bad old bananas. No adjustment in rate just a note put up on the cabinet saying no coffee or breakfast. Maybe nobody works there. Stayed downtown the next night and everything was close, cleaner and we met the owners and had a lovely morning walking around town….with a nice breakfast and coffee….much better.
- Carol (10/5): - Neat place.
- James (10/5): - Great breakfast. Would definitely stay again. Loved the location too!
- Dennis (8/5): - We spent the night at the Millsap-Baker Estate on Thursday, 12/21. As we were the only guests for the evening, James upgraded us to the larger Honeymoon Suite. The room was very nice, with interesting antiques. It was a quiet night and our bed very comfortable.
The home is well kept with beautiful antiques and architecture.
We had engaging conversation with our host James during breakfast. I highly recommend the Millsap-Baker Estate for your next stay in Damascus.
- Arlene (10/5): - The property was beautiful and the owners were wonderful.
- Jerry (8/5): - Home had some interesting old furniture in great shape. Outside just needs some talc…
- Suzanne (10/5): - Did not want to leave.beautiful place. The owners are great and they cook an awesome breakfast.
- Judy (8/5): Great place just outside Damascus - Don’t let the outside disrepair scare you away. The inside is lovely and full of interesting antiques. Full breakfast cooked right in front of you by owners James and Connie. Owners are wonderful folks who make you feel right at home. Comfortable bed. We hope we can go back!
- Alfredo (10/5): AT - Great place. The owners are really nice, friendly and helpful. The rooms are comfortable.
- Rachel A (10/5): - The outside of the property was absolutely gorgeous, as well as the inside. Everything was very clean and organized. If you have any questions about the beautiful and unique furniture, James will happily tell you about them! The food was wonderful, and the rooms were amazing. James and Connie were so kind and generous. Would absolutely recommend this stay :)
- Randall (8/5): - The history of the home. The hosts were great, telling us the whole history of the home and the town.
- Sara (10/5): Would definitely stay again. - The bnb is lovely. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. Would recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the area.
- Robert (10/5): - Wonderful hosts and a great breakfast. Thank you.
- Grace (10/5): Very accommodating - Wonderful host and property. The property has a wonderful history and we enjoyed our stay.
- Melissa (10/5): Thanks - Check in was easy. Snacks and cold drinks available upon arrival. Comfortable bed.
- Mary (10/5): Wondering alternative - This an unbelievably beautiful place hidden away in a small town about 20 miles from Bristol, Virginia. I will never again stay in one of those boring noisy highway motels. I arrived late but the owner still told me where to find the homemade cookies in the dining room.
- Marcia (10/5): - Marvelous
No complaints at all
Lovely hosts
Reasonable price
Going back for second stay in July
- Richard (10/5): - James and Connie were very accommodating to our needs.
- Mike (10/5): - This was my first time staying in a BNB. Very unique. I was the only guest at breakfast the second morning so I had a wonderful meal and conversation with James. The shower adjustment took a little getting used to, but very welcoming after 22 miles of hiking. Two thumbs up!
- Christy (10/5): - First, the pictures do NOT do it justice, it is absolutely beautiful. James prepared breakfast for me and can tell You stories about every piece of furniture in the home. I could sit and listen to him talk all day. It’s a little off the beaten path but so lovely. The room was gorgeous, it was quiet and so peaceful. I was there for a funeral, so i appreciated that so much. I will stay there again should I need to return to the area.
- Kenneth (6/5): - Exterior needs SERIOUS work.
Interior is very "antiqueeeee". Breakfast was very good. A glass of wine in the evening was a nice touch. Owner was very friendly and informative.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Damascus Rocks - Warm, friendly, and relaxing. A great room and wonderful hosts.
- christy (10/5): - This was such a lovely B and B. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable with a nice Roku TV. You will share a bathroom. The home is so interesting and filled with gorgeous antiques. The owner was super friendly and made a great breakfast.
- Hollie (10/5): - Personable and welcoming couple.
Beautiful home!
Quiet, relaxing, beautiful area.
- Greg (10/5): - The house was vintage and quaint. The owner personally cooked us breakfast and had the greatest stories. Love meeting new people!
We slept great.
- william (10/5): - Gorgeous! Wonderful atmosphere. Peroid pieces make tthe ambiance. Breakfast wonderful as well as the company. Owner outstanding. Will stay again.
- Ralph (10/5): - Perfect location for Creeper Trail access, beautiful old home, delicious country breakfasts, and friendly, helpful hosts. Highly recommended!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Poor customer service. - Didn't stay. Called the estate asking to cancel or reschedule 3 days ahead of stay because my traveling partner became ill, but the person answering the phone rudely declined any options. I had to pay the full amount, even though I knew I couldn't stay.
- Kimberly (2/5): mansion needs to be cleaned and unhoarded - Arrived at 3pm after missing the turn because the banner sign had fallen down. We were not greeted, but there was a sheet of paper taped to the front door with a kind greeting. After our eyes adjusted to the dark interior, the inside of tbe house was beautifully furnished, but extremely dirty. Food and dishes were set out on the kitchen table. Most surfaces were dusty and the steps leading upstairs were unswept. The door to our "Honeymoon Suite" was open and a key was on a table. This room was also very dark, dirty, and dusty. There were piles of personal items and cleaning tools behind the chair in the room. The closet was full of hung clothing. A dirty sock and toilet paper roll were under the bed. A used bar of soap was on the tub.I booked for 3 people, but there were 2 towel sets, a king bed, and a trundle day bed. We were biking the Creeper Trail the next morning, so I called to ask about a 7am breakfast. I was told no, but could eat the things that were already down on the table. We went downstairs to look and there was a half eaten box of donuts, some cookies, and small candy bars. There was no coffee near the coffeepot. Called and was assured there would be some to make in the am. Doors (both locked and unlocked) were all around our room. There is no bar or lounge, but wine bottles were on a shelf. Mysterious walking and creaking during the night. Finally met the owner when he yelled from the balcony to drive across the lawn to depart. We will not stay here again.
- Keith (6/5): Neat home, but not clean - We stayed in the honeymoon suite. The house is neat and nicely decorated. The room was very big and the bed was comfy. Check in was easy and we were given all the details we needed. Parking is a bit difficult. There is a sign not to park in front of the garage, yet there isn’t a lot of other space to park more than one vehicle. The biggest issue was the cleanliness. It seems our room hadn’t been used in quite some time and it was very dusty. There was a used bar of soap for bathing and hairs in the sink and near that soap. There were robe’s available, which would have been a nice touch, but they were dirty. For the money we paid we expected a clean room. We didn’t feel comfortable in the room at all and were happy to leave.
- Michael (10/5): - James and Connie were very hospitalble. We enjoyed our stay with them. I would definitely stay with them again in the future. Thank you for a great experience.
- james (10/5): Smokejimbo 16 September 2022 - Excellent little place in the country. Very cozy. Extremely easy to check in, plenty of snacks and food and drink as soon as you arrive not just the next morning breakfast. Highly recommend this place. My wife and I will be back here
- SUSAN (10/5): - A great sleep!
Glad we arrived during daylight.
Great breakfast, lots of fruit, snacks, drinks available.
Got to sit on the covered porch during a downpour, which I always enjoy.
- Michael (10/5): - Really awesome cool place to stay.
- Marc (10/5): Good Country B&B - This is an old farm house with plenty of character - both the house and the host. James has many good stories about the house and his family that lived there and he and Connie have done a nice job fixing it up. They provide treats - freeze dried fruits and drinks in the fridge. His sister has a nice greeting card selection for purchase at $5 - a bargain for their quality.
- Ronald (10/5): - Wonderful Breakfasts, friendly and informative hosts, historic property. Definitely would stay there again.
- Danny (10/5): - Great people and comfort
- Greg (10/5): - Beautiful old house. Comfortable room. Nice owners
- Doug (10/5): Comfort, coziness, old school charm - Wonderful eclectic B&B. Absolutely worth a stay. I was off hiking early the next morning and missed breakfast and I am sure wonderful conversation. I hope to be back again soon.
- Mae (10/5): - such an enjoyable stay, wonderful breakfast, a beautiful home full of history!!
- Patrick (8/5): - Beautiful historic home!
Not enough bathrooms for guests
- Kimberly (8/5): - Owners were exceptionally friendly and loved sharing information about their property and furnishings. Thoroughly enjoyed socializing over breakfast. The snacks/drinks provided were exceptional.
- David (10/5): - Liked everything except lack of outside lighting for nighttime arrival. Breakfast was very tasty and not too big.
- Michael (10/5): Great stay - Owners were very friendly. Breakfast was wonderful. Bed was very comfy. Will stay again.
- Aimee (10/5): Anniversary Adventure - Peace is priceless! Everything about our stay was perfect. Thank you so very much!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Damascus Dream - Step back in time with a stay at this exquisite homestead. Aged with time; this place is better than new! Here you can enjoy tranquility surrounding historic antiques. Learn about the land during your home style scrumptious breakfast!
- Cynthia (6/5): - Location was nice. Outside needed much care. Overgrown lawn, spider webs all around the entrance door. We had to clean the porch furniture to be able to sit outside. Generally unkept surroundings
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I expected the property to be a bit more updated. It has been in the Owner’s family’s hands since right after the Revolutionary War, so it deserves to be somewhat run down. However, it needs some work, especially in the only room with a bathroom (Bridal Suite). The Owners were friendly and pleasant, but for the money, we could have done better.
- Richard (8/5): Friendly Southern Hospitality. - The property was older and a bit run down. The host and hostess were very friendly and prepared a hardy souther breakfast each morning. The beads were very comfortable and I would most likely return. It would have been nice if coffee and tea were available prior to the 8:30 am breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very happy and will return this fall
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This picturesque old house has been thoroughly updated to be a delightful small b & B. The hospitality is first rate as is the less frequently encountered respect for privacy. The decor is a mix of modern bathrooms and antique sitting rooms. The food is first rate: Connie's breakfasts are fresh cooked and there is plenty; cookies are fresh baked each day and there are wine and snake trays around the house 24 hours a day. About a mile from Damascas, but even an easy connection to Virginia Creeper Trail.I'd stay again and I don't often say that.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a great place to stay and not expensive at all. The owners are very friendly and very prepared for you to arrive. I will definitely go stay here again because it’s close to the Cherokee national forest which is beautiful!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I came here unexpectedly in a time of sadness and in the midst of being utterly overwhelmed by life, but this place had everything I needed. Understanding and overly nice owners, beautiful & peaceful surroundings, and serene privacy. Yes, you share a bathroom but like many others I did not have to wait even once. The owners and their sweet spirits & the surroundings of the house & land - not to mention several local attractions the owners pointed me in the direction of which did not disappoint - all make up for that small deterrent ten fold ! If you need a peaceful place to relax, unwind, explore or maybe even find & ground yourself again like I did - this is the place to do it!! I will definitely be returning!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The grounds were large and spacious, and the inside full of unique antiques. It was in need of some TLC, but overall a beautiful property.
- David (10/5): Wonderful! - Amazing! Warm, comfortable B&B with extremely accommodating hosts. Breakfast was fantastic and the entire experience was wonderful!
- Robert (10/5): Very nice. - Wonderful property. Beautiful furnishings. Very comfortable bed and nice bathroom. Great breakfast. All the bedrooms are upstairs so you have to be able to climb stairs. Very friendly hosts.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The owners were so great! So many amenities such as cookies, beverages and just great hospitality.
- Theresa (10/5): a wonderful experience - James and Connie’s estate is an American treasure. Built, maintained, and managed by this gifted lineage; every corner and detail has been hand crafted with love and dedication and every heirloom and antique holds a story. As others have written, their generosity and hospitality are unmatched. We can’t imagine staying anywhere else in the area and would recommend this place to anyone who loves antiques, history, and supporting family business.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The home and property were absolutely beautiful!! There were so many uniquely beautiful antiques placed strategically throughout the home. The proprietors were engaging, friendly, and very helpful. Breakfast was delicious, and the morning conversation cannot be matched. I will most assuredly be staying here in the future.
- Jim (10/5): - We had a fantastic stay. We were riding the VCT and this place was great. Terrific breakfast, friendly hosts and other guests. Even having to share a bathroom with other guests was no problem. Highly recommend the M-B Estate.
- Mark (2/5): - They were not willing to refund due to COVID-19 international travel RESTRICTIONS! No problem accepting my money and double booking though.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The house was nice, the funky furniture was fun and the breakfast good but people smoked in their room and we could smell it all night.
- James (2/5): unacceptable lodging - The house smelled like mold. The house was dark & uninviting. The room was not secure because there was only a skeleton key in the back of the lock. There was only 1 bathroom to share with the other three guest rooms. Also, the bathroom was not clean. I would appreciate a refund. We didn’t even spend the night. Find other lodging.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very comfortable and quiet. Host most accommodating, friendly and interesting.
