Guest Reviews
- Malcolm (10/5): - Comfortable room, lovely amenities. The staff was very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was delicious!
- Gregory (10/5): - Nice large room with the essentials you need. Other reviews are picky with the “outdated room” but they need to lighten up. Hotel is located in a great location with a Beautiful view outside. Bed is comfy, room is clean, toilet is strong, water pressure in shower is strong abs nice hot water. Owner/manager is very nice with great customer service. Towels are well stocked, if you need more just ask. The driveway is dark at night.. but luckily I have headlights built in my car to see when I drive.
- Carol (10/5): Great place to stay, one of best kept secrets - This is our third stay at Black Horse this year, all for week long stays. We love the hotel, it is an older hotel, but very clean, comfortable, owners are so friendly and helpful. Wonderful complimentary breakfast every morning.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Wall paper in the bathroom was falling off. Microwave didn’t work refrigerator wasn’t cold, freezer didn’t work well. TV very very old and small. Toilet paper was sitting on top of toilet, not in the dispenser. Stingy on towels, no extra blanket or pillows.
- Todd (10/5): - Staff was nice and rooms were nice.
- Wilson (8/5): - Liked: Manager, Susan, is very nice and personable. Her sweet little dog, Lilly, was a joy to watch.
Didn't like: Poor driveway lighting. We arrived after dark, and had a difficult time seeing the driveway entrance to the inn. We ran into an 8 inch high asphalt triangle at the mouth of the driveway which we could not see due to the poor lighting. Also, inn has only a handicap elevator to move between the 1st and 2nd floor. This makes it hard to move luggage up to the 2nd floor via stairs.
- al (10/5): - Set back from the US1 highway on a large we'll maintained parcel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Conveniently located close to historic Camden and Dublin and Camden State Park
- Curtis (10/5): - The lady who runs the place work incredibly hard to make people feel welcome. She cooks, cleans, runs the desk and still has time to engage in conversation. I was really impressed.
- Mary (8/5): - Clean, friendly inn in a beautiful area. Nice breakfast, beautiful pool. Decor is a little dated.
- Deborah (6/5): - Decor was different. Not your typical motel decor. Too much flower wallpaper and bed covers. Chair cushions not needed.
Poor lighting in bathroom.
- Jodi (6/5): - The owner was friendly enough but the whole place needs updated. The bed was very hard and pillows very flat.
- James (10/5): - Nice rural location. Great breakfast.
- Marsha (6/5): - When having stayed at an Inn or B&B, I've always had a great breakfast. In my honest opinion, it didn't even qualify as a good continental breakfast. They offered muffins, bagels and cereal. As you entered the lobby it had Christmas and Halloween decorations?? It was a wee bit tacky. As you entered the lobby, there was also another room beside it which was a sitting area and bar which was covered with linens and misc.
- Jeff (6/5): - It’s a great property and the rooms are designed almost in a early 20th century decor. The check in process is a bit clunky. When you arrive there is no one at the front desk, with no clear sign on how to call an attendant. The prior time I stayed here there were 2 groups in front of me also looking to check in. This time I called the facility on my cell phone which got the attendant back to the check in desk.
Otherwise they were very friendly and the room was clean. Set back off the road so lower traffic noise from route 1.
- Donald (10/5): - Friendly staff
- Robert (8/5): - We liked the homey atmosphere of the room, breakfast dining area and lobby. Unfortunately the microwave oven in room 10 was inoperative.
- Judith (2/5): - I tried to postpone due to weaatherand thet would not allow me to reschedule
- Julie (6/5): Large bedroom. Nice staff - Better price than most in the area. It was very basic. Very old, but well maintained. Large room. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. Nice location.
- James d (8/5): - Staff very helpful
- Dana (10/5): Charming / peaceful - What a charming place! Beautiful, peaceful, clean, and friendly staff.
One of the best places I have stayed in. Highly recommend!
- Richard (4/5): - The room wasn't clean. The furniture was in disrepair. The was a spider on the ceiling. The staff was cordial but not attentive to our needs.
- Richard (8/5): - The Operators hake you feal very comfortable.
- Christine (8/5): - Nice area
- Deborah (10/5): - The appearance of hotel is beautiful. Staff very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean. We would stay here again.
- Jae (10/5): - So nice reception and cleanness
- Judith (2/5): - This place could be lovely but instead is dated, with a cluttered lobby which seems to be decorated for Christmas 365 days a year. The worst thing is the manager. She is rude and unhelpful. Plus it is hard to find her to ask questions etc. I would never stay here again and we would have left if there was another vacancy at a decent place in the area. But August in this area of Maine is super busy. We do not recommend.
- Melissa (8/5): - The hotel was really nice. Room very clean. My only complaint was the mattress was not very supportive.
- Anne (8/5): - Susan and staff wonderful
- diane (8/5): - Very clean, quiet, comfortable. Had a continental breakfast the next morning with fresh coffee, and pastries.
- Loray (10/5): - This was a nice beautiful place to stay. And the breakfast was to die for!!!! So yummy!!!!! Hoping to drive back thru and stay again. 2 thumbs up!!!!
- Cassandra (10/5): - Beds were comfy and we enjoyed the jacuzzi in the room!
- Richard (8/5): Great so far! - Arrived quite late; after 11. Hostess was lovely and friendly! She still had someone else arriving after us! She walked us the short distance to our lovely room and gave us a fresh out of the oven baked blueberry pastry which was amazing! Very happy with everything so far! Clean, cute and quaint accommodations. Connie
- Jean (2/5): Keep driving - The lady in charge does not know much about the hospitality industry. This location has plumbing issues (even the women’s bathroom by the reception desk wouldn’t flush-but didn’t post a sign). My toilet overflowed and she accused me in front of other guests of plugging the toilet. I did NOT. All the breakfast rolls are from Wal-Mart and are old. Limited to one thin pillow for the bed. Save your money-go somewhere else!!!!
- Zachary (10/5): - I really enjoyed the privacy most, and i was pleased to have a small kitchenette in the room which made things very convenient with our baby. I would like to see more updated version in the future, but other than that i was very happy
- Loretta (10/5): - The owner/ manager was very friendly and personable. Was hands on at breakfast and attentive to her guests.
- Danielle (6/5): Maybe, maybe not - Let me just say that the Jacuzzi tub was amazing, big enough for two adults. The inn was hard to find and I drove right past because the sign isn't lighted, and google said to turn some where else. The outside was absolutely beautiful the inside however was strange, Christmas decorations up in the lobby and the parlor was dark and uninviting no lights on felt like you weren't welcome in the whole time I was there. The dining room where you're supposed to have your continental breakfast was very large and open which was good, but the continental breakfast itself was like 10 or 12 different varieties of muffins, plain bagels, plain English muffins, boiled eggs, coffee and Orange juice. Way too much for carbs and just eggs for protein, not healthy. There were no instructions or guidance for any of the amenities. No welcome note with tv channels and information about the pool we never saw when we where there. There was a not so friendly, tiny old dog barking at people, yet no pets allowed. The walls where paper thin too, I got a call at midnight saying my son was too loud and somone might complain. My room was the most expensive one in the place too. No washcloths but tons of towels. The bed was very hard and made a lot of noise when you got on and off of it. I would go back for the jacuzzi but nothing else. It wasnt very inviting atmosphere, everyone in the dining room ate in silence and hushed whispers.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bad Vibes - Upon arrival, the entire inn was decorated in Christmas decorations in August and there was a lot of clutter. The lady that checked us in was incredibly rude. She asked for my address and after she realized we were from New York she was was even ruder. We were brought to the wrong room and when brought to the right room, the room had a TV from the 1990s. At breakfast, there was no more fruit left and when I asked for a piece of fruit (I explained I have celiac and can’t eat anything else) the lady said they had nothing left and we got there too late even though the time of the breakfast wasn’t over yet. She brought up fruit after when she realized what she did was nice. Overall do not recommend this place!
- Garlan (10/5): - The fact that it was outfitted for Xmas seemed a bit strange. lights strung on the banister made it difficult to navigate the stairs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was pretty new, very clean and
Susan was very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location was perfect for me. Visiting friends either in Belfast or Thomaston/Rockland was easy.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The service is not good.
Got torn towel
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was very nice stay! The room was clean and quiet, very friendly people
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Management and staff were extremely helpful and good natured.
I hope the owners are aware and appreciate how hard working they are!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice people and they keep the place up beautifully. Odd Christmas decorations up during the summer throughout. Terrific breakfast in the morning.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - My husband and I booked a 2 night stay and literally 2 days later found out a fund raiser for a terminally ill very close friend was scheduled for that same weekend.I called the INN that evening at 9pm when we found out It was 16 days prior to check inn plenty of time for a CANCELLATION POLICY REFUND. I can't begin to tell you how difficult this Sue/Diane management was to deal with. After more than 10 phone calls, being hung up on I finally THOUGHT I was all set our reservation was canceled...I thought wrong they charged my credit card for a 2 night stay......The phone calls began again I was hung up on telling me to take it up with my credit card company, the next phone call I was told Expedia had charged my card... after my call with EXPEDIA and them telling me the owner is the one that charged you I called back .....about the 7th phone call later and the lack of honesty from Sue/Diane (never get a straight answer whose on the other end of phone) I called again explaining my call with Expedia she told me to call back in the morning and I will look into it NO NO NO i said and she told me she was to busy to deal with issue and she couldn't have charged account she didn't have my card number. WELL 10 minutes later she called me explaining that the other girl SUE OR DIANE had charged my card it was there mistake and how sorry she was....are you kidding me!! Totally appalled. Don't even have words of how poorly, unprofessional, and dishonest this INN was to deal with
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Pool was lovely. However massive updates needed for property. Exterior is beautiful but the rooms were extremely outdated. Very friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Property sits on a beautiful lot. Breakfast was yummy and plentiful. However Room was pretty terrible: room smelled musty, almost stink, like wet clothes that sits without drying properly. Towels were the thinnest I’ve ever seen. We left as soon as we could because it was uncomfortable sitting in the room- because of the musty smell.
- Audrey (6/5): mixed emotions on this place - welllll, the proprieter has a toy dog who has the run of the place and barks a lot. She puts out LOVELY pastries for guests, but tells you ,(you may NOT eat in you re rooms, even though the dog has run of place..hmmm. Well kept, but a xmas tree smacks you in the face upon entry as well as xmas decor everywhere. rooms are spacious, property location is very nice but remote.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing room, animal friendly. Great people
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly staff and very accommodating. Beautiful area.
- Michael (8/5): Quaint and quirky - Check-in was a bit of a mess. Booked two rooms with queen beds- they only had one reserved. Was made to feed this was my fault, but ended up with 2 suitable rooms next to each other but only full beds in each. BRING AN AIR MATTRESS if more than 2 in a room. Pool was nice. Maintenance staff was very nice and will get you what you need. Just be prepared for a true Maine accommodation- it was lovey- but not the same as a chain hotel. Our kids learned what “rustic” means- so that was great. Very close to food and entertainment.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The people at Expedia allowed me to book this room and when I arrived they said no rooms available we spent a night without a room in Maine. Our whole trip needed to be altered and the closest room I could find was in New Hampshire, this was very disappointing! You can confirm this with the management at the Blackhorse end.
- Carol (8/5): Relaxing - Nice little place. Comfortable, clean and nice flower garden.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked that it was well maintained, with a some of the original furnishings. It was quiet and comfortable. The staff was friendly. Perhaps some new towels and better quality paper goods. Overall a lovely experience. We will be back!
- Katherine (8/5): Thumbs up - Very cozy environment. Quiet. Clean. Proprietor on site exceptionally helpful and friendly we definitely go back and definitely recommend.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Avoid if you can - It was less than adequate. I’m really disappointed with our stay there. From walking in and not being able to get a hold of anyone for almost 10 minutes, to lack of privacy and feeling intruded upon, to lack of amenities such as WiFi info, tissues.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner and staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure we felt welcomed. They even gave us some extra treats and attention for our 1 year old daughter. Homemade muffins were also a plus!
- Lori (10/5): - The staff was very friendly. They kept everything neat and clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly wecome, very clean rooms; extensive breakfast;
- Jamie (10/5): Quirky, spacious, but a little pricey. - Beautiful property, quirky styling in the rooms, indicative of the era of the property. Proprietor was also quirky and pleasant. Price for room was high for the location. The room was very spacious and breakfast was above average continental pastry.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - great people and breakfast. very helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Eccentric, but friendly. Kind of a throwback to decades ago, but on the whole it was quite pleasant and gratifyingly unstuffy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The inn was very clean and the staff was personable. The furnishings are a little dated but very well maintained. I would definitely staff here again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was clean and well cared for.
We did not get the queen beds that were reserved.
Although the mattresses were comfortable, the beds were pretty rickety.
It would have been better if they didn't cheap out on TP, soap, shampoo, and breakfast. It wouldn't cost much to upgrade this and make the experience much nicer.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great room - love the idea of a kitchen sink and counter in the room so we weren't trying to wash dishes in the bathroom!
The Innkeeper was great - gave us some good tips for local food. The breakfast also offered a good variety of pastries and all COVID safety measures were well implemented.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Does not allow disabled - Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act (see ADA.gov) and the Maine White Cane Law the owner of this establishment would not let me check in and stated to my husband and I as well as the police "I don't care! Take me to court!" A service animal (not an emotional support animal) is not a pet and is legally allowed anywhere and everywhere that I go. Fear, allergies, preference etc. have no bearing on a service animal's presence. Prior notification is also not required as a service animal is the equivalent of durable medical tools such as a cane, walker or wheelchair.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very quaint, furnishings were in keeping with the style of the Inn. Mattress was too firm for me but my husband slept like a baby. Spa was a great addition, it was a very peaceful atmosphere and close to Camden. Loved it, we would stay here again.
- JANE (10/5): Definitely recommend - It's a throwback to another era! A little dated and yet everything was spotless and comfortable. Fran is a little bundle of energy and breakfast was plentiful and delicious!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Francesca was a wonderful host. Our room was comfortable and clean. An amazing continental breakfast was laid out in the morning. Excellent coffee. Highly recommend staying here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The manager Fran, was excellent. The premises were clean and comfortable. Delicious homemade muffins in the morning. Fran went out of her way to make certain that our group of 8 was happy at all times. We can't say enough good about our stay at Black Horse Inn. Highly recommend!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our room was clean and comfortable. The Manager, Fran, was wonderful. Very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was great with her home made muffins. We had lousy weather but had a great time anyway.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The place was very nice. The only complaint I have is there was no ac or even a fan
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Tbe staff was exceptional, very friendly, and quick to help if needed
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location was very accessible for our trip and easy to find. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The common areas were cluttered and not available to guests - i.e. the living room area with fireplace and such. The suite was very clean and bed comfortable as well as the soaker jet tub. 90's decorating vibe was reminiscent of our honeymoon so we enjoyed that. The chairs at the small table were older and strangely rocking chairs s well. We did not use them. Housekeeping was done up well. We enjoyed the fresh made muffins very much for breakfast. It was a bit odd to leave the Inn from one outside door to go into another outside door for ice but I believe that if the living room area was opened up for guests, there was a more direct route. We did not use the outdoor pool that was in another area of the property but from what we saw, it looked clean and upkept.
Overall we enjoyed our stay but the rate was higher than what we would likely be willing to pay in the future. We booked late for the trip so understandable, rate reflected that.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A pleasant hotel with the vibe of a bed and breakfast--the proprietor lives on the premises and is very friendly and welcoming.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - What a miserable stay. Tv never worked, lady said, i can't fix that. The lounge was closed. Looked like someone was living in there (day bed, personal belongings). The room had dirty clothing, in the dresser. Live and dead bugs, no hot tub, no pool. Felt very mislead, in the Expedia description. We should have camped.
- Rebecca (10/5): - It was a nice stay with friendly staff
- Patricia (10/5): - Very nice stay. Big room, friendly staff, nice coffee and breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Black Horse Inn is a great option for those visiting the Belfast/Lincolnville area. The place is nice and cozy, with spacious, clean rooms and an attentive front desk. The quaint continental breakfast (bagels, English muffins, coffee) is held in the dining room, which overlooks a beautiful backyard space. I'd certainly come back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great experience
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was clean and the employees very friendly. The front desk area was cluttered with a Christmas Tree and a Skeleton sitting with a guitar. and papers were on a small table where the desk clerk seemed to be working. The bed in our room left alot to be desired. It was like sleeping on a board. There were not vending machines for soda or snacks. It wasn't a bad stay, But I would think twice about staying there again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Dated interior with large comfortable rooms could be charming but strange rules and staff made us feel tolerated, not welcomed.
There were no common areas inside we were allowed to use excepting the dining area during specific breakfast hours. One main common room was a clutter of boxes. There were Christmas decorations at the front desk in June. We arrived by bicycle and were asked not to lean our bikes anywhere and to store them in the woods. We love animals but observed the resident small dog was hostile to guests.
Unfortunately accommodation options can be limited in this stretch. Recommend considering staying a bit North or South.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very clean but dated. Unfortunate plumbing issue but was fixed by plumber.
- Linda (10/5): Comfortable stay at the Black Horse Inn. - We enjoyed our stay..The staff was great.very friendly .Helped us bring our bags up in the elevator..The room was comfortable and clean. It is old fashioned but nice ,barhroom had blue tub ,toilet and sink.it was a blast from the past..comfortable bed .pretty grounds.Great breakfast.home baked pastrys.
- Mark (10/5): - Room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Grounds are beautiful. The owners are awesome!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved our stay here! Breakfast was delicious!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Arriving later than expected, we were greeted warmly and checked right in. Our room was clean, inviting and comfortable. It was perfect for a girls weekend away. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The grounds are beautiful. The Inn sits far enough back off the main road so you don't hear the traffic when you are in your room. We explored Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville and Belfast. The Inn was perfect as it is centrally located to these towns.
Because it was off-season while we were there, the pool was closed as well as the dining room. But there was a continental breakfast available to take back to your room.
I highly recommend the Black Horse Inn.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a lovely hotel it brings this old world charm with it. When someone can't appreciate that classic feel it gives, then it's maybe not for them. It is in a very convenient location but it has also very nice views to the ocean. The stuff is extremely friendly and supportive of ones needs. The internet was super fast. I can only say good things about the Black Horse Inn.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The facility is dated but that’s part of its charm! It was clean and Frank was super friendly! Beautiful location and large rooms.
- Vanessa (4/5): Dated - Very dated property. Peeling wallpaper, lukewarm shower, paper thin towels.
- Dave (8/5): - Proprietor was friendly. The shower head did not work well and it could not be adjusted. The room was good sized and comfortable. We were the only guests for 3 of the 4 nights we were there.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - One bed sheet had a stain on it. Woman at front desk did not cover her nose with her mask.
- candy (10/5): - wonderful quiet spot
clean
slept well
pool not working but wasn't issue for us
- Robert (10/5): - Great place, would definitely come back again. We stayed in the suite, it was very comfortable.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The guy at the front desk was cordial enough.
The check in process was smooth.
The common areas are cluttered with junk. I peeked into the "bar & lounge" where the lights were off but the TV was blaring. I thought "cool at least I can sit down, have a drink, and relax." No. There was clutter everywhere. It looked like an unorganized storage unit.
The room was depressing. It was clean but the lighting and furniture were terrible. Tiny box TV. I Didn't even turn it on or sit on the bed. No phone and the wifi was spotty. I spent some time playing with the lamps straight from 1970 trying to get the lighting into something that didn't make me feel like I was in a jail cell. No luck.
Let's check out the bathroom. Maybe I can just shower and sleep and forget that I had just spent $100 to stay in a torture chamber. Nope. The one ply toilet paper came from a gaudy dispenser. the toilet and bathtub were this awful maroon color. I've never seen anything like it. I had to get out of there. I forfeited my room and the money I had paid for it. I checked back out almost immediately and crashed with a family member in the area.
Maybe it was only so bad for me because I was alone and the sound of the heater was the only thing distracting me from how depressing this place was.
If you're traveling with family/friends it might be a good enough place to sleep if you're too exhausted to care about anything. Probably not though. Don't do it.
I wished I had looked at the room before paying for it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I really enjoyed my stay here. The inn keeper during the winter is extremely nice, I would sit and have coffee with him every morning, just talk amd enjoy a little company. He made sure to check on me if I have any problems or needed any towels or toiletries. The room was clean, the heater worked, the prices was very reasonable. If I'm ever up here again, this will be my first choice for a place to stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a place to sleep. The guy that checked us in wS great.
- Eric (10/5): - Nice and clean franko was realy friendly , Breakfast not the best
- Vicky (10/5): Wonderful Stay at the Black Horse - This was a great find! One of our favorite stopovers on our week long New England tour. Rooms were so clean and comfy! Location was beautiful. The hosts were so kind and accommodating. The homemade muffins in the morning were such a pleasant way to start the day. We would definitely stay again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - charming accommodations and beautiful breakfast-very friendly, accommodating host-very nice location- highly recommend it
