Guest Reviews
- david (10/5): -
- WOOLLARD (9/5): Central to Ross on Wye and a place with much atmosphere - A lovely place with quite obviously a great history .
A very lovely and helpful host !
We only stayed one night but very happy Nothing, all good
- Nolan (6/5): - The property is located just off the one-way system near the main town centre. There’s no dedicated parking, but nearby street parking is free for two hours between 08:30–18:30 and unlimited after hours and on Sundays. You can briefly stop on the double yellow lines outside to drop off your luggage.
Check-in and Communication:
I called a week in advance to request an early arrival so I could get changed for a wedding, which was agreed to. However, on the day, the situation felt awkward due to the cleaner being in the room and being stroppy about the room not finished being cleaned so we could drop our bags off. There was also no communal space available to change in. The check-in (5–8pm) and check-out (10am) times are also not the most convenient.
First Impressions:
From the outside, the property has some charm, but there’s a fine line between “antique aesthetic” and simply “aged and worn”, and this place sits somewhere in between.also
Wifi login did not work!
Arrival Experience:
There’s clear signage outside. After climbing three stone steps and ringing the bell, you enter a very small reception area which smelled of laundry from a nearby dryer. From there, more carpeted stairs lead up to Room 4, and then a narrow set of steps (with an aged grey carpet) to a loft area with two single beds and a double bed.
The Room:
We stayed in Room 4 which was in the attic.
The room features wood floors, pine furniture, a few old prints and books, and exposed wooden beams, which are
- Antony (10/5): - the Wifi password wasn't clear
- Mark (2/5): - The property advertised car parking available - false!!. The pictures indicated a really pretty house with gardens and historic bedrooms: in fact the entrance was dirty with a huge armoire stuffed in the space and leading up some steep stone steps to a landing which was dark and dingy, the pictured gardens could be accessed via a door marked Private and the rooms were up a narrow dark staircase. Room was reasonably clean but had dust on every surface, bathroom was in what looked like a converted corridor with shower and a toilet where you couldn’t sit straight it was so narrow, basin (old 1970’s avocado color) was in the bedroom and set into a cheap old and battered Formica worktop, fridge under was sat on what looked like old foil backed insulation. Were it not for the fact that we were staying one night I would have run hard and fast. Sadly other accommodation in the town looked similarly run down and overall Ross on Wye is not the town it used to be. Very disappointing and we felt very misled by the on line description. The ratings on Expedia must be fake as I can’t see anyone rating this anywhere near an 8-10 for any aspect.
- Robert (9/5): As above - Clean , central and always friendly. The shower didn’t work this time
- Catherine (10/5): Unique pace to stay, close to the river and loads of great walks - Great location and the property is full of history Nothing
- Bernard (9/5): Excellent property at an excellent price. - Quite a basic property but very good for all of that. Breakfast was not provided, but that was not an issue as the property is right in the town centre. The host was very efficient. I believe the building was very old (maybe a re-purposed court?) and this gave it a lot of historical charm. The room was very clean, comfortable and well-provisioned. It was also quiet at night both inddors and out. All in all an excellent stay and an excellent price. n/a
- Dennis (9/5): -
- Marjorie (10/5): Great value for money. Beautiful old building which is decorated nicely. Very comfortable bed. - Friendly welcome. Details explained. Comfortable room. Use of laundry facilities.
- Gareth (10/5): Excellent - Great location, very comfortable and well appointed room, friendly, helpful and kind host. Would stay again.
- Bhavik (9/5): -
- alison (7/5): Ideal position - Spacious room... Handy Fridge very pleasant young lady found me a hair dryer The shower room was not finished loose taps, holes in the walls. No mirror in the bedroom so you have to use an extension lead into the bathroom to dry your hair... Which is defo not safe..!!
- James (9/5): -
- Hodgson (6/5): Pleasant -
- Andrew (8/5): Very good - Great location , quaint and different
- Fiona (8/5): A lucky find if you like historical stays - Very sweet, old building with lots of history. Loved the big family room and the garden with lovely views. The children enjoyed staying in such an old historical room. Great addition of fridge and drinks facilities. Location is super and easy to find, use as a base. We only stayed one night so found local car park with a short walk. As an old building, we didn't expect it to be perfect in condition, so expect noise from the street/ local pub if a sunny evening. We took earplugs. Curtains also didn't keep out the light but again we're used to this with children so brought sleep mask. Would be great to be able to black out windows. Garden lovely although a bit tired and no food offerings which would have been lovely on the terrace (but we're not in sunny Greece so not complaining!)
- William (7/5): Good -
- William (7/5): Good -
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- Graeme (8/5): A quirky but very comfortable place to stay. No hesitation in recommending. - A quirky but very comfortable place to stay. We received a very friendly greeting and found the rooms comfortable and spacious. (Lovely garden to relax in with an impressive view). I would definitely stay there again.
- Jo (9/5): Superb -
- Beaty-pownall (8/5): Very good -
- Barry (8/5): - Quit
- Christopher (5/5): Overall it was fine and good value for money. A couple of small changes could have made it very good - The location was good but finding somewhere suitable to park was difficult. The room was absolutely fine apart rom the mattress on the bed which was way too soft for me. The lack of parking. The bed.
- Brent (7/5): Quirky charming room in a lovely town! - Quite charming property in the centre of Ross-on Wye, ideal for access to Forest of Dean. Lack of bar/restaurant, but plenty of options close by.
- M (7/5): Quirky! - There was no breakfast available . We didn't know this. But there was a Costa Coffee down the road so we went there. Parking! Non existent and very limited lay by to unpack car. Public car park was 10 minute walk.
- Annette (4/5): Disappointing. - Nothing The room stank of drains. The bed was difficult to get in & out of, it was in a wooden frame with no headboard so couldn't sit up to read. The bathroom was far too small. Couldn't switch on shower without help. Electrics used extension leads & adaptors, didn't feel safe. One of the bedside lamps didn't work.
- Christina (6/5): Pleasant - Quirky Lukewarm water in the shower and no breakfast provided
- Graham (4/5): Ok but unacceptable cleanliness in the room - The property is a period type which I accept is part of its quirkiness however, there were cobwebs and dust and slug trails and stains on the carpets, bed and sofa in the room The property is a period type which I accept is part of its quirkiness however, there were cobwebs and dust and slug trails and stains on the carpets, bed and sofa in the room
- Margaret (6/5): Very convenient to town - Quirky No breakfast facilities
- Tony (10/5): Historic building. People so friendly. Just such a comfortable and relaxing stay. Loved it - Property so full of character and an exciting experience to stay there. Staff lovely. Location perfect. I loved my stay. I really cannot complain about anything
- Babbo (9/5): Fab location, fab property fab value for money - Full of character and charm.
Efficient staff Not much
- Calder (10/5): Perfect comfortable stay - Amazing host very knowledgable and happy to talk about the building
- Louise (9/5): Superb -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and staff really friendly. Nothing, great building with so much charm!
- Karmel (10/5): A lovely, spacious stay in the family room with some much appreciated complimentary extras. Host was extremely accommoda - The size of the family room was perfect! The bedding and mattress were one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in and on. Complimentary bottles of water in the fridge which was a lovely touch. Even to have a mini fridge was very handy. Shower is a bit temperamental and water pressure is on the low side but it does do the job.
- Jonathan (5/5): Passable - Lovely old building Couldn't sleep very well as woken by upstairs noise foot traffic could hear a pin drop from room above
- Susan (6/5): Promising burn poor delivery - Perfect l location and atmospheric Cheap Bedlinen, hard pillows and slow shower
- Keith (10/5): Perfect for what we needed - Very easy to check in. As the guest house description states clearly, there lots of stairs. Great location.
- anthony (6/5): - if found it cold tv was miniature and didn’t feel like it was very welcoming
- Lidia (8/5): Would stay again! - Location was fab - very close to town, yet just far enough away to be quiet. Characterful property. Great spacious room - it was nice to have a sofa too. The shower was not good - you had to choose between hot and very feeble or cold and more powerful.
- Angela (10/5): Excellent central accommodation in a lovely town. - Spacious, comfortable and central location. Easy check in. Very comfortable bed. Nothing to dislike
- Moore (10/5): Exceptional - Quirky and location So many stairs
- Philip (9/5): Beutiful old building - Beutiful old building
- Jemaimah (8/5): - Lovely place to stay. Historic building with lots of character. Easy check in and can come and go easily from property. Some noise from other rooms/guests. Small but workable bathroom. Lovely room.
- James (10/5): Exceptional - Old building from the 15th century, a lot of character.
Great central location close to many pubs, restaurants & shops.
- Gregory (10/5): - It was a splendid place to stay. If you love history then you must stay here. It is very convenient for eateries, parking and it fulfils all the expectations that we have got used to these days. We only stayed one night but we wished we had stayed longer. Everything was perfect. Thank you.
- Georgina (8/5): Very good -
- Ritchie (8/5): Very good - Good location, good communication, friendly Very small shower cubicle
- Dunbarwhite (9/5): Superb -
- Les (4/5): - Toilet and shower area was just over 2’ wide
Shower could do with a good clean
Some people said it was quirky but that would not be my description of it sorry not for me
- Malcolm (10/5): - It’s an oldie worldie place but it’s quirky enough to give it a 5 out of 5. It’s odd and won’t feature highly in the top 10 places to visit but it’s convenient. The rooms are very old and well…..odd with random furniture scattered about but the owner is friendly and it’s close to shops and places to eat. Shower was warm and bed was comfy. There’s free parking on the road a few minutes walk away between 6pm and 9am. If you’ve walking difficulties this hotel might not be for you as there’s no lift and the stairs are tight.
- Malcolm (9/5): Historic location. - Very central in the town. Historic old building, ‘quirky’, but comfortable in all respects. There’s no breakfast, but a wide choice of breakfast options very close by. Nothing.
- Alan (8/5): Very enjoyable. Location was good, car park facilities were close by. - A big room with lots of old character. Every thing was excellent
- Heidi (10/5): Stop over on route to Oldfield forge - Lovely old building with lots of original features, very quirky we loved it ! Very comfortable, nice large room, bathroom adequate but needs a bit of attention.
Great view through the bathroom window.
Lovely garden area. Close to Town which is lovely, lots of Restraunt's for Breakfast & dinner inc Wetherspoons for a budget brunch.
- Lee (8/5): Very good -
- Magnus (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (10/5): - This property is a very old building and offers quite a quirky style of accommodation. However this only added to the enjoyment of our stay at Ross on Wye. The room was very large and catered for all our requirement. An absolutely lovely place to stay. Would thoroughly recommend.
- Philippa (5/5): Passable - The room had a lot of character. There was plenty of space in the main part of the room and the beds were comfortable. The available free parking was convenient and it was good to know we could use it up to the afternoon on the day of check out, if we needed to. The shower room with toilet was so small, you could barely sit and close the door. The shower leaked a bit. Trying to get new towels seemed a issue as it didn't appear that anyone came by to check on the rooms daily to resupply or change the towels and linen. Linen is not such a problem, but the towels definitely were, as there was nowhere suitable to dry them in the room.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- C (5/5): Adequate but could be so much better. - A great location with many original features and great views over towards the river. Lots of bars and eating choices within 5/10 min walk. En-suite shower/ WC is so small and vary narrow and basin areas needs a complete overhaul. The garden has great views and with a bit of attention to paving and flower beds, it would be fab
- Kathleen (9/5): Comfort, cleanliness, excellent location. - Quirky, very old property, lots of character. Very helpful host. A more modern style suits me but my daughter loved it!
- Catherine (5/5): Had great time - Fab location, Hard to find. Not signed
Very steep steps to access
Very small bathroom
- Pinelopi (8/5): Very good -
- Rebecca (10/5): Exceptional - The rooms are always lovely, the staff there always welcome you with a smile and are more than helpful if needed. The back garden is a beautiful place to unwind. There was nothing we didn't like.
- Sally (9/5): Very friendly. Great location - Cosy. Attractive. Comfortable. Because of my age I struggle with the stairs
- Alan (9/5): Brilliant -
- Graham (8/5): Very good - Good location. Quite. Quirky Every thing was good
- Tina (10/5): Quirky - Quirky house with access to a lovely garden, offering countryside views, and seating with tables. Free parking is steps away. Very comfortable room overlooking the garden with sofa and original fireplace and beams.
- Alan (10/5): Lovely and very traditional - Location and nice place
- Tim (2/5): Old , damp and scruffy - Location is good and check in staff helpful in difficult circumstances. It's old, damp, scruffy, run down and bathroom cramped. Steep stairs to access in very old poorly maintained building. It is very expensive for what it is.
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional - The house was from around 1500-1600, which we found very exciting! Someone wrote that it is like living in a museum, and I can only agree. The garden was fantastic and the location just 100 yards from the city center. I can definitely recommend this place! The shower door fell off, but I could put it back. I should probably be looked over though.
- paul (2/5): - Not open
- Sally (8/5): Just what I was looking for. - No breakfast on offer. Spacious atmospheric single room. Warm welcome. Great location.
- Phil (8/5): A pleasant stay in an historic building. - A great location for visiting Ross-on-Wye and parking was provided in a private car park about 50m away. The building is very old and quite historic, but definitely not suitable for anyone with mobility issues with two flights of steep stairs to negotiate. Lots of interesting furniture and artwork, and we enjoyed a warm welcome from Katherine. The toilet and shower are in something similar in size to a cupboard, so you need to be pretty agile to get into the cramped shower cubicle. Check out is at 10am, so not any good if you want a lie-in.
- Ross (9/5): Superb -
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional - The huge room in such an amazing building
- Sophie (10/5): Exceptional - We had all 3 rooms so no other guests and it felt very private and special. We loved the character of the property being from the 15/16 century. The location is very central and the garden was a lovely space to have breakfast in the sunshine .
- Lynn (2/5): The accommodation was totally unacceptable for us. - My husband and I senior are senior citizens. There was 32 stone steps from the street to our room. There as no reception area. The shower room was really small. Neither of us could get into the shower. The bed was clean with good bedding but the bed itself was a wooden frame and very low down. Didn’t suit us at all.
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good - Location, lovely staff, lovely room
- Mike (8/5): Very good - Loved historic quirky hotel. Spotless
Very friendly.
Quiet.
Very central Nothing
- Eunice (8/5): Quirky little surprise - Quirky and comfortable l loved it. I felt like l was sleeping in a museum . Better than the boring norm . Stairs as l had a bad knee but normally would have been no problem
- Howard (8/5): Old Court in Ross Centre. - Just bed for one night.
Doesn't do breakfasts hence the good price.
Big room, oak beams etc.
Everything we needed.
Excellent location in the centre of Ross.
Great Italian restaurant (Avellino) a few minutes walk.
Lovely cafe for breakfast on RHS walking towards centre, right next to a delicatessant. Also very close. We thought parking would be a problem but it was OK. The 2 hour street parking limit is 09:00 to 6:00 pm so as we arrived about 5:00 we were OK till 9:00 in the morning.
- Moz (9/5): All OK ideal for short stay for work - Good location in the middle of Ross.
- Marilyn (7/5): If you like the charcter of old buildings you will like this one. - The building is lovely, lots of steps but plenty of handrails. There is a terrace so you can sit outside. The staff are super friendly and available for anything you need. You are given a code so you can come and go when you want and the parking is close by.
There was a heater in the room so you have heat when the heating is off. There was a fireplace in the room although it was blocked off and not usable. Plenty of character and furniture. There was also a good sized washbasin in the room. The en-suite, which was not pictured, (the others pictures looked more adequate) is basically a closet . Very small with little room to maneuver. The sink would be no use for washing (there is a bigger one in the room) and when you take a shower you have to leave the room to dry off. The water at the bigger sink had to be left to run for a very long time before the hot water came through.
- Christopher (8/5): - Quite an unusual property which I really liked but it wasn’t what my partner would have chosen. They did come round to it though. Very handy for the town and restaurants and lovely walks nearby. Fridge in room with water, bathroom a little cramped but at least it was clean and the host (who I think may live there) was very friendly.
- Hanna (7/5): Good - The house has a lot of character and is very central
To the town The house is very old and I found that it was very noisy, other rooms walking around can be heard and creak the floor boards in my room
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - Really friends and allowed me to check in early. Very helpful and answered all questions!
- Charles (7/5): Ideal location, clean room and facilities - Friendly meet and greeter. I believed breakfast would be included but was advised breakfast could be obtained from around the corner.
- Marie (8/5): Grat building ( if you like old quirky featues ) great staff - I loved the history and quirkyness of the old building. Not everyone's cup of tea as facilities were more than adequate, but very basic. See above
- David (8/5): - The property is very old and quirky its what I wanted as I was working in the area. It is at the top of the high street and close to places to eat and drink. I did not get to see much of Ross due to work
- Anna (3/5): Needs an update - Great location in Central Ross. Incredible 16th building. Relatively expensive. Room was dusty. Ensuite and facitilies were dated. No breakfast included.
The beautiful roll-top bath in the family room (a highlight of the photos) set the fire alarm off when we used it (due to leaks), and we were later informed it was ornamental only!!
- Hayri (9/5): Superb -
- Dimitry (5/5): Passable - There was no breakfast
- Pierre (6/5): A historic building full of character and charm. The facilities are quite basic, but if you can overlook that it’s a nic - A wonderfully quirky historic building Bathroom very cramped. Hard to sit on the toilet comfortably. Also the shower needs updating and had very little water pressure. Perhaps a larger tv is needed
- Jodie (1/5): Bad -
- Angela (8/5): Quirky and characterful, excellent location for our needs. - It was quirky and full of character. Was clean and the room was spacious (en suite not so spacious, but fine). The lady who greeted us was very friendly and helpful. Decor and facilities were a little mismatched and tired.
- Mark (7/5): A charming old world experience in a historically significant building. - The accommodation was good considering the restrictions of the historic building and improvements were being made. Very close to town centre with parking just around the corner. There are a lot of steps to negotiate so someone who is physically impaired would find it difficult especially if having to carry luggage. No breakfast, which was clear at booking, but not many places open for breakfast before 9.00am
