Guest Reviews
- mjm7856 (10/5): Lovely stay in a Super hotel - Had a great one night stay. Very friendly and helpful staff. Given coffee on arrival and helped us plan our trek up to Mt Misen. We had a room in the Annex and it very comfortable and huge.
A nice touch was the bag with tooth brush, hair brush, socks, etc.
There was a free drinks area to help ourself.
Just note that everything closes down between 5 and 6pm in the village.
The Kikunoya hotel is in a good location. Just a short walk to the rope cable car and a few minutes down the hill to the Tori gate.
When we came off the ferry we asked the girl at tourist information to call the Kikunoya and they sent the car to pick us up in 5 minutes 😀. Also dropped us back to the ferry terminal.
- iraymond69 (10/5): Highly recommend - We loved this hotel. We took a second floor annex room for 3 nights and honestly it was one of the best hotel rooms I have experienced. It even has its own onsen.
We didn't eat at the hotel, there are so many lovely restaurants in the town.
The hotel has a shuttle to and from the ferry since it is located on the other side of the town, but really the town is not very big and everything is within walking distance of the hotel.
One mention, the hotel is not cheap but it was a lovely treat and the end of a most wonderful Japan trip.
- Synne83 (10/5): Beautiful hotel - We stayed one night at this hotel. The hotel is very nice and clean and is located on top of a hill. It is very well located with a nice view of the sea. We got a large nice room with a beautiful view of the torii gate. We chose a Japanese room because we wanted a Japanese experience. The room was neat and clean, but I wish the bathroom was a little bigger (a little small space around the sink for toiletries). The staff was nice and picked us up at the ferry, they also drove us back to the ferry dock after check-out. There is a path behind the hotel, recommend a walk around the area. We had ordered a kinsai dinner with delicious wagyu beef, but unfortunately only got fish dishes. The food was beautifully presented and looked delicious, but unfortunately I am not that fond of seafood so we were perhaps a bit picky eaters. I think those who like seafood, fish, shrimp and snails will be very satisfied! We will be happy to return to the hotel and definitely recommend it!
- arianem445 (6/5): Very Japanese - Our Dutch travel agent booked this hotel for us (mother and daughter) for 2 nights.
If you like Japanese roomstyle and Japanese food ( also for breakfast) it might be fine. For breakfast you get a tray already prepared with japanese breakfast. You can take bread , sweetened joghurt and coffee in paper cups from the "buffet".
We informed the front desk staff 2 hours before dinner that we do not eat meat.
We were really surprised by his reaction, clearly annoyed, even for European standards not a reaction you would expect being a guest in a hotel!
To mention something positive: it is clean, our room was big.
However we would choose another hotel, also because we are not really fond of the Japanese kitchen, certainly not for breakfast.
- fabriziogJ3845VF (10/5): Amazing stay - We chose Kikunoya Hotel for our Japanese style room experience during our Japan trip. It was a good choice. We really enjoyed our drink in the nice footbath outside garden, we booked the "Ocean view" room which was quite expensive but it was really worth it. We also had the typical J dinner and it was really delicious even if I would say not entirely suitable for children and teenagers. But I have to say the staff were very responsive to our food allergies - much appreciated.
- alexvgau (10/5): Japanese room and gourmet dinner - We stayed in a Japanese-style room, which means sitting on the floor at a table during the day. While you're at dinner, the staff comes and lays out a futon mattress for sleeping. If you don't like sitting on the floor they have regular rooms too.
The included dinner was exceptional, with several courses. Supposedly if you book on their website you can pay more to get dinner served in your room; we used a 3rd party booking service and dinner was in the restaurant. When considering the value of this place, consider that your rate may include an amazing dinner.
I didn't use the baths so I cannot comment there.
One of main advantages of spending the night at Miyajima is that you have more time to see the "floating" gate in different tidal conditions. You could also use the extra time for a long hike to the top of the mountain.
- karimz514 (10/5): very good - I arrived late on my arrival day and the staff told me they are closing the door 24.00 pm. It was quite a walk from the ferry terminal to the hotel (i guess about 20 min. walk with my luggage). Later i found out they have a free shuttle service -.- .
Anyway staff at the reception and in the dining room were very nice and the room was ok. Everything clean as expected and a small Miyajima souvenir are waiting to be eaten^^.
The bath area was small and good, as was the air in general on that island.
After chek in you get a yukata and the key to your room.
One thing i felt sorry about; Staff worked until 24.00pm, just to start working again at 5 a.m. .Thats not ok.
As a result, an email i send earlier about changing my room was overseen. I am not mad about it, since i arrived late anyway. But for gods sake, let the staff at least get some rest between the shifts lol.
- joebbb (10/5): Small, convenient and great service - Small hotel with good location - walk to the shrine and through beautiful Momijidani Park to the ropeway. The outdoor footbath is also a cafe, so you can enjoy a drink while soothing your feet after a long day of sightseeing and shopping. Functional onsen and a restaurant as well. Staff was very helpful with our onward reservations, and brought us to the ferry pier before the scheduled time so we could catch an early ferry. Good value for the price.
- Meme (10/5): - Great location, food was good. I enjoyed hot-bath. The staff are very friendly and professional. a shuttle bus service was very helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice place to stay in Miyajima. Good situation, near Daishion temple and the forest.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The lack of a private toilet is slightly troublesome due to the main bath's opening hours.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff. Clean new facilities. Unable to regulate room temperature.a bit oricy considering the size of the room. We had the family room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- ColoradoTraveler2go (10/5): Wonderful place to visit - This hotel is excellent! The Onsen, foot bath, breakfast and customer service was over the top. My family thought this was the best hotel we stayed in while in Japan. There is a bit of an uphill walk so you may want to call the hotel and they will pick you up at the ferry station. The robes, travelled packs and nightly snack were above what anyone could expect.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- You Sheng (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- JBC1 (10/5): Great choice on Miyajima - Really enjoyed our stay in Hotel Kikunoya. We were kindly collected from the ferry terminal, and returned for free. The friendly and efficient staff showed us to our room and explained how everything worked. Our standard twin was more than adequate with nightwear and toiletries provided. Never tried the Onsen but there appeared to be a lot of guests who did. Breakfast was quite adequate and a nice touch, the only included breakfast during our trip to Japan.
The Tori gate and main street such as it is are a five minute walk away and the pick up point to the Ropeway just around the corner. Dinner would be worth considering on a future stay as there was a very limited choice in the evening on the island
- JulesLandsman (10/5): A charming boutique hotel on a busy tourist island - This is a small, boutique hotel offering spacious Japanese style rooms, a very good Onsen, and delicious meals when you opt for breakfast and dinner. It is quiet and peaceful here, in contrast to the many, many tourists who come daily to see the free-roaming deer, the many shops and places to eat, the Buddhist Temples and the famous “floating” Shinto Shrine. I highly recommend Hotel Kikunoya!
- jules (10/5): Lovely boutique hotel in a popular tourist town! - My wife and I came to the busy island of Itsukujima to see the beautiful Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines here, and to spend a night at the charming boutique hotel Kikunoya offers a very nice Onsen, delicious meals and spacious Japanese style rooms. It is a very enjoyable experience to visit and stay here!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Outside Onsen and pick up service from station and very spacious rooms. Great choice for Mijayima!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Unfortunately Hotel Kikunoya was our least favorite hotel in Japan. While that being said there are not many options on Miyajima Island. Some positives are the free breakfast in the morning which we were not expecting as well as the complementary foot bath outside (kind of fun after a day of walking). The location was about a 10 minute walk from the ferry across all major attractions. The hotel was extremely close to our morning hike up to Mt. Misen which was awesome. As always you get wonderful and friendly staff in Japan.
The negatives are simply in the room, while spacious just felt very dated, unclean and uncomfortable. The bed was small for two and lumpy. No private shower or bathtub which is fine until you release the only place to clean yourself is the public onsen bath (not really ideal). I've been to many hotels with public bathrooms and showers however this was odd to me.
The breakfast was good hitting and missing on some components. Overall it wasn't awful by any standards just not really close to some of our other stays. Also a bit pricey for what you get.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Jorge (10/5): - Increíble lugar.
- Hans (8/5): - Märklig och vacker by, litet svårt att hitta i geografin, underbara tempel!
- Vincent (10/5): - My wife and I were warmly welcome by the reception staff on duty. We were early for the check-in, staff kept our bags so that we could continue to explore the parks. When we return in the evening, bags were kept nicely in our room. The onsen was awesome. Breakfast was on time and the meal was awesome too. Special mention to the hotel staff who speaks Mandarin, that was really helpful as we can't speak jappanese. We had an enjoyable stay, certainly would love to be back again.
- amanda (8/5): - The hotel was lovely as was the onsen
Was disappointed that there was no forewarnings that everything closes at 5.30 so dinner should be had either early or preordered at the hotel otherwise it is a 10-15min walk to the nearest restaurant and only a handful are open
Otherwise was pleased with the stay
I am so glad to have stayed there for one night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good stay but let down by smoke smell - Our room was BIG with big twin beds and about 55-inch TV was amazing. They gave free red bean cake which was nice and location was perfect. What let us down was the smell of smoke as our room was opposite the smoking room and can hear people walk in and out. I found it strange that we had to give our key to reception before going out?
I liked that they provided free breakfast which was pleasant - you can choose western or Japanese style.
- Robert (10/5): - Nice clean hotel
- Brittany (8/5): 2 nights on Miyajima - Really enjoyed my time at the hotel - not much to do on the island at night so they had an array of DVD’s to choose from, and the onsen was perfectly lovely - I really enjoyed that they have an outdoor bath as it was not so hot and I could relax in the sunshine. The Japanese breakfast was interesting but tasty, and the staff were delightful and courteous. All amenities were really good, and I slept very well and comfortably. We arrived just after a major typhoon but the hotel had helped me navigate the storm via email to catch all trains and was really nice to have then pick us up from the ferry terminal upon arrival. I would absolutely stay there again if I find my way back to Miyajima
- Ziva (10/5): -
- Pol (8/5): Goed verblijf - Zeer vriendelijk onthaal.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful, well-appointed hotel in Miyajima within walking distance to everything! The only thing I wish I'd known before I went is that the on-site onsen is strictly no tattoos. I have a full sleeve, and so I wasn't able to enjoy it until after it had closed to other guests... meaning I couldn't use it until 11 PM. It's expected for onsen to not allow tattoos, but I was surprised since this one is in a hotel. Just something to keep in mind if you're heavily tattooed. Otherwise it was a fantastic, comfortable stay!
- Julien (10/5): A very good stay on a paradisiac hotel - We had a very good stay in the hotel Kikunoya. The rooms are small but the breakfast is included and the staff is very very friendly. You have the choice for the breakfast, either a westerner style or Japonese. The japonese one is excellent! Lots of stuff, very tasty, great service.
I highly recommend this hotel if you stay in Miyajima!
PS : There's a shuttle service from the port terminal which is very appreciable
- roger1009 (8/5): Amazing - Very nice japanese athmosfere, with greate experience in a open onsen. In the room, they offer for fred a typical japanese wearing. Service very enjoiable. Recommended hotel if you visit miyajima. Breakfast is correct.
- Barbara (10/5): This is just the perfect hotel in the Miyajima isl - Having the best vacation. Nothing else to say.....................................................
- Caroline (10/5): Miyajima - The hotel went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. They picked up our luggage from the ferry station and dropped it back off when we caught the ferry home. The onsen was awesome after a long plane flight. The breakfast was perfect. The outdoor bar/foot soak is so peaceful. I would definitely stay here again.
- Jane (10/5): A quiet hotel in pleasant surroundings. - A small walk from the ferry terminal and up a hill behind the temple but the hotel is lovely. The staff were very helpful at check in and explained the room and facilities along with places to eat.
The room very comfortable except could have done with an extra chair.
The Japanese breakfast was delicious.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Spectacular hotel, tucked away from the hustle-and-bustle. Delicious traditional breakfast, and a classic onsen that was exactly what I was hoping for!
- Ming-Yuan (10/5): Wonderful experience - I've been Japan for four times. This is the best experience. Very close to the main views. The crews are very nice and welcoming. The breakfast is rich and awesome. They also can drive you to take the boat. You can enjoy the night view and morning of the Tori.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Kyle (10/5): Comfortable hotel with nice amenities - Stayed here with a friend one night during a 2 week trip around Japan. Overall, the venue is quite nice and the staff is courteous and helpful. While they speak mostly Japanese, it seems that there is staff aptly suited to address any questions or concerns in other languages.
An indoor/outdoor public bath is available during the morning and in the evening. And complimentary breakfast is also provided. The room is very clean and has a mini-fridge and hot/cold water.
- kausere (8/5): A small hotel - This hotel is small and we had a western style room which was quite small and we are small people. As we were only there for a night it was fine. Beds were comfy. We were given kimonos and slippers and could walk around in those. There was an onsen there but we didn’t have time to use it. The hotel sent a car to miyajima ferry Port to pick us up. Had to ask at the port. It was raining a lot so it was lovely to get a ride. The hotel also arranged for our luggage to be sent to the ferry port whilst we went sightseeing.
The only thing was that the dinner they provided was Japanese which was a good experience but we are not big on all
Seafood. It was an elaborate spread though. I suggest to inform the hotel if you don’t eat/ like seafood.
The service of the restaurant staff was sincere and friendly.
Everyone was helpful in spite of communication problems.
The Torii shrine was 5 mins walk as were all the other sightseeing places.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice hotel. About 5 mins walk from the shrine. Excellent service. Were picked up from the station and luggage delivered to the station as we walked back to the station after check out. Tried the all Japanese dinner in the evening at the hotel, Quite an experience for people who don’t like seafood! Requested English breakfast next morning.
- Hermann Alberto (10/5): Kikunoya - Lugar espectacular.
- JOSUE (8/5): BUENA UBICACION - HABITACIONES COMODAS, LIMPIAS Y CON BUENA UBICACION
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Have free shuttle bus to carry luggage from hotel to the port, just take 10 mins. Staffs are Very nice with good English.
- Irene (10/5): Amazing - Our stay couldn’t have been any better! Everything was beyond excellent.
- jonm601 (10/5): Such a wonderful little hotel - Let me start by saying that if you’re fussy and/or like opulence, this hotel is not for you. It’s modern and clean and best described as quaint. The rooms are small - but hey, you’re in Japan so don’t expect big rooms - and if you have a Japanese style room don’t expect a bathroom as there is an onsen for bathing. There is also a great little bar outside with a heated foot-pool. We sat out there on a freezing winter night with our feet in hot water enjoying hot sake and it was an awesome experience.
The hotel is located only a short walk from restaurants, sights, etc and offers a free shuttle service to and from the ferry.
The staff are extremely accommodating from check in to check out, but what was most impressive was them keeping the onsen open for me after closing time (11pm) so that I could bathe privately, as my tattoos won’t allow me to bathe with other guests in there.
If I come back to Miyajima I will most certainly be staying here again.
- smartravelerAdvisor (4/5): Not my first choice - We decided to spend a night at Miyajima Island to experience the place without all the tourists. It was a last minute decision and this hotel had a western room available with breakfast included for US$200 on Booking.com. It’s located on a quiet street behind the main temple in the island. Decent common area for a three stars with tiny and stuffy rooms and plastic bathrooms. During the night I had to open the windows to be able to breath.
Some guests seemed to have dinner included, we were told that the restaurant wasn’t working for dinner when we checked in, and later we saw a lot of people having dinner there. Go figure.
Breakfast was basic and decent.
The Onsen is located by the lobby and it serves as the shower for guests with rooms without one. It looked disgusting with people washing themselves there.
If I had time to plan my trip, the Kikunoya would not be my choice of hotel in Miyajima.
- Mily_13 (10/5): Lovely Hotel and even better staff! - Let me start by telling you that this hotel is a steal! The quality of the facility, room and breakfast totally exceeded my expectation, especially for the price! ( We paid about $95 for one night Dec 2017). They provide very comfortable Yukatas and socks to use around your room and the onsen. They have a public onsen with an indoor and outdoor pool. We stayed in the double twin room which was perfect for two people.
Location is very centric. A short 5-10 min walk to Torii gate.
Our highlight though was the staff! They were all so nice, respectful and went above and beyond to make our stay perfect! I forgot my favourite earrings in the bed and didn't realize until hours later after check out. I went back, but they had already cleaned the room. I informed the manager, and he looked so concerned, called the cleaning company, and got them to search the bed sheet laundry for me I never expected such a level of care! Luckily they found them and mailed it to my Kyoto hotel.
Hotel highliy recommended!!
- hwee0415 (8/5): Nice, cosy and quiet place in Miyajima - Hotel is within walking distance to major places of interest in Miyajima -- Itsukushima Shrine, Otorii, Daisho-in Temple, Five Storied Pagoda, Momijidane Station (Miyajima Ropeway) and Momijidane Park.
The hotel itself has good facilities, nice rooms, hot bath, good breakfast, and friendly and helpful staff. Shuttle services between the hotel and the ferry pier are provided free of charge. One thing to note is that dinner reservation has to be made in advance prior to arrival, though this is not clearly stated in the website. Most restaurants in Miyajima are not open for dinner, hence dinner selection may be limited.
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Selsy (8/5): Excellent location, nice hotel at a modest price - The location is great, near Itsukushima shrine but just slightly removed from the busier part of the village, which makes it a pleasant quieter place to stay. It was wonderful to be able to visit the shrine when it opened at 6.30am, and avoid the huge crowds later in the day.
Kikunoya has a wide range of rooms, from luxurious Japanese-style ocean-view rooms, to more modest family rooms and semi-double rooms. I booked a western-style semi-double room with shared bathroom, which closely matched the photos on the hotel website and on Booking.com. The decor is a little old-fashioned but the bed was comfortable. There was an ensuite toilet and handbasin, and the shared bathroom was actually the onsen bath which was great. A yukata is provided, also standard toiletries and a hairdryer. There is an electric kettle and chilled water provided, with a complimentary local sweet which was a nice touch. Breakfast was included, with a western option where the rice is replaced with bread and the miso soup with juice. Everything else is the same as the Japanese breakfast.
The only thing I disliked about this hotel was the smoking room, which was on the same floor as my room. The smell was quite noticeable at times.
Overall Kikunoya is excellent value on Miyajima, particularly with breakfast and transport to/from the ferry included.
- Serch_Reyes (8/5): Great place-low price - This hotel offers all commodities you can ask for in a hotel in Japan and has a really good price.
Offers in-door and out-doors onsen on the property, is 200m (or less) from daisho-in, price includes breakfast and the beds are ok. Best thing is the bar outside of the hotel which features a small pool to put you feet on, makes a really nice ambiance to enjoy a couple (or more) sake drinks
- Monchhichi (10/5): Value able choice - Dealable price. Nice services. Location near the the landmark
- Maggie (10/5): Lovely hotel, excellent service - Lovely little Japanese hotel with shared onsen. Rooms were small but comfortable and clean. Service was excellent from room amenities to breakfast staff to the ferry shuttle. Highly recommend a stay here.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice and quiet hotel - Excellent staff, very attentionate !
We came with two children and all of us left very happy about our stay.
Hotel can organize minibus to the ferry and even lifts in rainy days.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I dont normally review, but i really felt I should with Kikunoya. This hotel was amazing. The staff spooke good English and were extremely friendly. Breakfast was great - total value for money. Room was incredibly spacious for Japan standard. The hotel even dropped off your luggage at the Ferry port so you can explore the island then get information at the Ferry port to call them and your bags will be dropped off at the door.
Overall, Id totally recommend this hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): Best staff - Miyajima is ranked as one of the top three scenic spots in Japan, and we enjoyed our visit because we were able to spend a night on the island at Hotel Kikunoya. We arrived at the ferry terminal and requested for the Information Desk to call the hotel for us for courtesy pick-up. Our driver was very friendly, and told us about Miyajima. Our room and bed were small but expected. The room had a toilet and sink. Two yukatas were folded on the bed for us but were too large so we requested smaller sizes to wear to the public baths. I showered late and had the onsen to myself. The hotel was a downhill walk to the Omotesando, Machiya Dori, and Itsukushima Shrine. I recommend the shrine first thing in the morning before the tourists arrive, and try to go when tide is low so you can touch the floating tori gate. The hotel was also a quick walk to the Momijidani Park and to the Daisho-in temple (both of which have hiking trails to the Ropeway).
We paid for breakfast but opted out of dinner. The town closes early but the hotel had information on late night eats. Our breakfast was tasty. We chose the Japanese breakfast which had unlimited rice and miso soup. There was a staff member working in the dining room during breakfast that was fluent in English and helped us arrange a courtesy shuttle to the ferry terminal. However upon checkout a different staff person was at the front desk. Our shuttle didn't come so they arranged for a private car to rush us to the terminal.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful Royakon - Amazing staff amazing food - wonderful stay!! They have courtesy vans to meet you at the ferry landing. Nice modest facility with men and women's Onsens. Amazing dinners!! Amazing staff.
- Nancy (6/5): Good but noisy - It was nice to be on the island, staff was ok but too much noise on the level we stayed with a tea room and conference right there ! Good thing it was just 1 night but ok.
- Christopher (8/5): A Must Read for Travelling Westerners - I wasn't given a specific reason "why" I wasn't allowed to eat at the hotel restaurant but I can only "assume" it was because I have visible tattoos. Which I'm okay with because I've lived in Japan long enough to know this is common.
But what did strike me as odd is they already had a map on "standby" as if they were "expecting" this to happen. I'm not sure if they get a lot of guests with tattoos (which I highly doubt) so I can only assume it's a Japanese "only" restaurant and that it had nothing to do with my tattoos at all but for the fact that I was a foreigner. (something I am also used to about living in Japan)
So on this factor alone, I had to mark the "Hotel Service" as AVERAGE. I don't fault the Hotel 100%, but they should be verifying information that 3rd party sites are providing (or NOT advertising) regarding their establishment.
I do wish the site would have been more specific to that fact because I had planned on eating there.
Once again, this is my experience. I'm sure if someone who flew halfway around the world ran into this problem the rating would be a lot lower regarding "Hotel Service".
Overall, it met all my needs and I was satisfied.
(DISCLAIMER TO ALL FOREIGNERS: If you have tattoos, you can't use this hotel's "public" style bathroom. As tattoos are still a taboo in modern time Japan. But there is a toilet room inside your actual room and a sink.)
- Maitreyi (10/5): Lovely inn 5 min walk from the Itsukushima shrine - Had a lovely 1 night stay at this place. Very close to the Itsukushima shrine but some walk from the ferry walk. Approach road is quite steep so avoidable if travelling with heavy luggage. Baths are advertised as shared/common baths but in fact they are onsen (both indoor and outdoor, M/F separate). The hotel provided Yukatas in the room which were really comfortable. Concierge kindly offered us a flashlight when we stepped out after dark.
Bed was quite small for 2 adults and restaurant shuts at 6pm.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not sure why this hotel has such high ratings - We stayed one night in this hotel and were not massively impressed with the quality of the service or the quality of the room for the price.
Service was a little abrupt, when it was not indifferent.
Room was right next to a neighbouring building, which would be fine if the room had blackout curtains as the other building has a lot of lights so our room was lit up even with the curtains closed.
Curtains were moldy too.
Bedding was really naff (imagine sleeping under a cross between a valance, plastic sheet and duvet...). Not great in spring, but would have been unbearable if it was any hotter.
Not truly awful, but not great either.
