The bathroom felt like they were taking the “stepping back in time” aspect a little too far. Oldest hairdryer I’ve ever used (hardly worked), also the bathroom seriously needs an update. Also, the tatami mat cloth was frayed in some areas (this is just me being picky).

Nice traditional breakfast with good variety. Room was comfortable and japanese-style with futon bed and traditional flooring. Hotel staff made sure to clean it up and prepare it for us every day. Since you need to leave your shoes when you enter, a small chair next to the door would be helpful when you need to put them back to leave the room.

• Sofia (9/5): - Struttura tradizionale situata nel pieno del centro di Kyoto, a due passi dalla fermata metro di Sanjo, dunque servitissima e con ogni tipo di servizio a portata di mano (ristorantini, negozietti, 7eleven sotto casa). La struttura è un po’ datata, ma questo è il suo unico punto a sfavore. Curata in ogni aspetto, con futon e asciugamani cambiati giornalmente, pulizia buona e onsen a disposizione la mattina e il pomeriggio fino a mezzanotte. Camera molto ampia, arredata in modo tradizionale, con futon (comodissimo, credeteci!), bagno con ampia doccia. Colazione tradizionale (non sceglietela se siete i classici occidentali che non possono rinunciare a cornetto e cappuccino!) che cambiava ogni giorno, con prodotti di prima scelta, moltissime verdure e pesce, tè diverso ogni giorno (assaggiatelo sempre, è pazzesco!), zuppa di miso, riso. Fiore all’occhiello: il personale! Sono incredibili, gentili, accoglienti, disponibili, parlano inglese. Ho adorato questo posto, ci tornerei subito e lo consiglio!

• Nadezda (5/5): Good location and nice breakfast, but cleanliness and service need improvement - Great location in Kyoto, spacious room, and a delicious traditional Japanese breakfast * The bathtub drain was clogged with hair from previous guests, which was unpleasant. * In the morning, while we were at breakfast (around 8:30 am), we returned to find our beds (traditional tatami futons) already put away — even though we hadn’t requested it and were checking out at 10:00 am. We had planned to rest a little before leaving, so this was inconvenient. I would suggest the staff focus more on cleanliness rather than tidying beds without request, especially on check-out day. * When I went to reception to ask for help carrying my suitcase down the stairs (as I’m pregnant and unable to lift heavy items), the receptionist seemed surprised and questioned why my friend wasn’t carrying it — even though she already had multiple bags of her own. I’m not sure if this was a misunderstanding due to language issues.

• Asa (10/5): Awesome location, great staff - My reason for this visit was to watch the Gion Matsuri. This property is located a block away from the route! It sits on the border of Pontocho and Gion districts, so a short walk from the Geiko (Kyoto Geisha) areas (did see some walking to their next gigs). Close to a major food/shopping area. The property also has an onsen, and breakfast (Japanese and western set menu options) is included. Staff was extremely helpful in calling for cabs, pointing out attractions nearby and further away. Room is traditional tatami style, (and huge by Japanese standards). Bedding is futon Not noted on the website (or I missed it), but there is a room safe in the cubby under the TV) Half a block away from a subway entrance east and bus lines west, easy transportation options No laundry on site, but a travelers coin laundromat is half a block away across the street. Food area is only available during breakfast, which is at a scheduled time slot (no walk-ins). Plenty of food options just out the door

Very comfortable, traditional style accommodation with tatami mats, a low table and futon for sleeping. Very quiet and very clean. The daily bento breakfast was a delicious surprise every morning. The TV only had Japanese channels.

• Mariah (3/5): Terrible experience - The only thing we liked about the place was the location. Everything!! The room was old and scratched up wall paper, the bathroom was mouldy, old and dirty with dust, mould and hair left in some places. The air conditioning was shared across multiple rooms so we couldn’t turn down the heat when we wanted to. They forgot to give us a bath mat for the shower the first night we were there. Even the toilet paper was like a public bathroom quality. Everything was just cheap and nasty, we couldn’t wait to leave. The staff didn’t speak good English and was difficult to communicate with them about issues with the air conditioning. The fridge also was barely working to keep things cold so we didn’t really utilise it like we would’ve preferred. It’s turned us off ever trying a traditional style accommodation again.
