Guest Reviews
- Jeremy (8/5): Magnifique - Emplacement parfait
- Tyvian (10/5): We’re planning to return - Stunning location. Amazing team. Wonderful food. Idyllic onsen. Wifi

- Alberto (10/5): - El trato amable, personalizado y cordial.

- Ying (10/5): A quiet and refined luxury. - This extraordinary hotel gave us a rare glimpse into the elegant hospitality once reserved for Japan’s most honored guests. From the exquisite kaiseki cuisine and serene hot springs to the impeccably attentive, warm, and thoughtful service, every detail was handled with grace and perfection. Our experience exceeded all expectations, and we could not have been more delighted. No
- Elisa (10/5): Amazing!! - Great ambience and lovely authentic rooms! Friendly staff and amazing Japanese cuisine Nothing
- Iaroslav (8/5): -
- Viola Marina Andrea (10/5): - Everything. Everything was absolutely perfect
- Lorna (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. - The setting was incredible! The onsen was also wonderful. It was a bit tricky for those that don’t eat fish as there are no alternatives.

- aferret (8/5): Heritage ryokan with a private bath - We decided to splurge for our one night on Miyajima and chose one of Iwaso's cottage rooms with a private indoor bath. Founded in 1854, the ryokan has serious heritage, is beautifully maintained, and the staff are generally very friendly. They offer a free shuttle from the ferry terminal, but we chose to walk on arrival and used the transfer on the way back.
One small irritation: given we had booked one of the most expensive rooms in the house, it was a bit surprising that the young staff member showing us in didn't really know the cottage. She was visibly confused about why the connecting door was open — turns out the cottage can be divided into two separate rooms, and our booking included both, with two living areas. She also forgot to show us the private bath, and only later came running back to ask about turndown timing and which of the two rooms we wanted the futons laid out in. A small thing, but at this price point you'd expect a more polished introduction.
A coffee maker and a small fridge were provided. The private indoor hot bath was wonderful, but the public baths are well worth a visit too, as they draw from a natural hot spring, which is a rarity on the island. And because it's an old wooden building, I had one of my best nights of sleep in a long time.
A practical note: we didn't book dinner at Iwaso. Worth knowing that Miyajima is essentially a day-trip destination, so once the last ferries leave, only a handful of restaurants stay open in the evening, so plan ahead. If you enjoy traditional ryokans, Iwaso is a must!
- HALIL (9/5): -
- Jane (9/5): A relaxing stay with terrific food and attentive and kind staff - The location was beautiful. The onsen that opened to the outside was so relaxing and lovely. The furnishings need a bit of refresh, but this was overcome by the excellent staff.
- Ansa (10/5): -
- benjamin (9/5): - Personnel incroyable.!
- Cornelia (8/5): -
- Iren Ozlem (9/5): A real Japan experience that you shouldn’t miss. - Location, food and staff were excellent. Kaiseki was extraordinary, also breakfast was a nice experience.
- Clemens (9/5): - The food was great, the people were very friendly, Onsen was nice. The surrounding nature and creek are truly beatiuful and very relaxing. Depending on who is seated close to.you at dinner/breakfast, it might get a bit loud.
- Jean-Marie (6/5): Very good, but...... - The staff at Iwaso met the standards and the expectations; high class service; the room and the facilities met our expectations or were above our expectations. The onsen was overheated; people who dare to take place in the bath could not stay for more than a couple of minutes; my spouse did experience the same in the ladies'bath. Hence the onsen-experience at Iwaso was somewhat frustrating.
The most frustrating souvenirs at Iwaso however, were related to the Kaiseki; non Japanese people were placed in a separate room (maybe just a organisational coincidence, but frustrating); moreover, having enjoyed several ryokans in other parts of Japan, the Kaiseki was less memorable; a significant notch under experiences in the Hakone region; at Iwaso, we did not enjoy the pinnacle of local haute-cuisine.
To summarize: IWASO is a perfect place to enjoy a 5* place as Miyajima but not to enjoy a breathtaking 'Kaiseki-experience'

- Maya (10/5): -
- Anya (10/5): Beautiful and restful Japanese experience - It was just such a lovely oasis in the middle of quite a hectic touristy Miyajima.
The hotel is beautiful and the staff were so friendly. The onsens are so relaxing and set in beautiful surroundings.
So easy to walk up the mountain and get to the ropeway early before the crowds. Miyajima after dark is a totally different place without the tourists and very peaceful, just the deer for company.
The food was amazing and the staff were so welcoming.
- Maree (10/5): - Such a lovely place to stay. We stayed in the new building with toilet, bathroom and traditional tatami floors. So relaxing, bedding was comfortable, dinner was next level amazing. Our maid made us feel comfortable and the onsen was lovely. A great experience Nothing
- Marilia (9/5): Expensive, but fantastic experience! Bad Wi-Fi though. - Overall, a fantastic experience! Very traditional Japanese setting, and super welcoming staff. The meals were delicious, and the staff were wonderfully accommodating of our dietary restrictions (I'm a vegetarian). The onsen was absolutely outstanding. The Wi-Fi was extremely poor, everywhere in the hotel! And overall the price is on the higher end, so although the experience was fantastic, I'm not sure I would pay that much again.
- Popescu (10/5): -
- Sheila (9/5): - L’authenticité -
- Marius (7/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): A lovely and restful stay - This is a beautiful and excellently located hotel. Had a lovely two-night stay there, with nourishing and delicious meals, and frequent use of the onsen. It’s also a brilliant location for exploring other parts of the island. As it’s just a five-minute walk to the famous Tori gate, you can go there early in the morning (the shrine opens to visitors at 6.30am), before the crowds arrive. It’s also very close to the “ropeway” (or cable car) that carries you up the mountain. The room was spacious, comfortable and restful.
- Linhan (9/5): - Beautiful location within walking distance of Itsukushima Shrine, backs up to a gorgeous forest with nearby park/hiking trails. The staff were so kind and welcoming (including picking up our bags for us from the storage lockers at the ferry terminal). There was an indoor and outdoor onsen, both of which were clean and not too busy. Truly a magical experience! It was a little disappointing to eat in a banquet style room.
- Diana Maria (10/5): -
- Umberto (10/5): Moment hors du temps - Service exceptionnel ! Rien
- Bergh (10/5): -
- Mark (10/5): -
- Giovanni (10/5): Amazing ryokan surrounded by trees and nature - We were greeted by a lovely Japanese girl, Lisa, who welcomed us to this beautiful ryokan and explained everything about our stay with such kindness and desire to help that she made our stay really unforgettable. And the stay was absolutely wonderful, from the amazing meals to the pleasant and fascinating surroundings, not to forget about the quiet and elegant onset where we spent some time after dinner. A beautiful special place!
- Albert (10/5): -
- Dolores (10/5): -
- aga (9/5): -
- Nicholas (10/5): - Everything, perfect stay, area, experience
- steve (9/5): Special traditional place on an island - Traditional Japanese room, tatami mats, etc.. Really hot onsen (loved it). We booked dinner inclusive which worked really well. Shuttle to/from boat landing worked well. Great to walk outside and down to the sea once the day trippers had gone. Wish we'd stayed longer. Nothing I can think of.
- Elena (10/5): -
- Madward (10/5): Very nice stay for 2 nights - A lovely location and fun stay on the Island. Sweet staff. Very helpful. Only criticism is no western breakfast. We were not the only guests struggling with this - we went to star bucks instead. Just toast would have sufficed or some fruit but not an option which was a bit disappointing.
Wonderful walks very close by.
- Kim (9/5): Good stay in Miyajima - The ryokan is gorgeous, the staff at the reception made us feel really welcome. The kaiseki dinner was quite disappointed compared to the ones we had at other ryokans (Nara,Kinoseki,Kagaonsen..)
We did not even have a table, the meals were served at a jcounter
The food was just ok, not exceptional., the service was lacking,
For breakfast, when I said my egg is too cooked for my taste, the waitress just told me : Cannot change .
- VIET ANH (10/5): -
- Jennifer (9/5): - This is a beautiful onsen just a handful of steps away from the landmark torii, with a warmly welcoming staff, a delicious set meal, and beautiful facilities delicately scented with incense. Get up early in the morning to visit the temple at dawn, before the hordes of sightseers come--you won't regret it.
- Sharon (9/5): -
- Adam (10/5): -
- Mike (10/5): A step into a dream - The food was absolutely amazing, some of the best Japanese food I’ve ever had. The staff were all so accommodating and friendly. They made me feel very welcomed. The hotel and property were beautiful, very comfortable and relaxing stay.
- Lawrence (10/5): - Very traditional atmosphere but modern enough for current needs (e.g., WiFi). Nothing
- Julie (10/5): Romantic getaway lived up to expectations. - We paid extra for kaiseki dinner and breakfast.
- Giorgio Roberto (9/5): Great place, but read up beforehand on how dinner / breakfast works. not everyone might like it - The onsen was nice, with both indoor and outdoor baths. The onsen was barely used during the two times I went, so it was possible to relax without any stress.
The room was great, and the staff extremely serviceable.
The food was extremely fresh and a great deal of effort went into presenting it to you.
Beware though, ryokan experience entails not being able to order "a la carte", you get what they serve. While the experience was great, I could not help but feel that the guests from the main building and the guests from the new building were treated differently.
The following analogy might be a bit of an overstatement, but it was something akin to feeling the difference between a first class ticket and a business class ticket.
For the record, I stayed in the new building.
- Erasmo (10/5): Iwaso was a great stay on our brief stop at Miyajima and we would revisit. - The staff was very pleasant and helpful to ensure we had a great time.
- Killashandra (10/5): -
- Karen (9/5): Interesting experience - The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. Will never enjoy sleeping on a futon
- Andrew (10/5): - Fantastic staff, great onsen and lovely restaurant. Great location to explore the island.
- Véronique (9/5): -
- ESTER (10/5): -
- Jiří (10/5): Extra class accomodation and services. - In this accomodation history and Japan tradition comes together with high quality of each kind of service. Starting from staff, through the environment to food. All perfect.
We enjoyed so much. Big thanks for such unique experience. Everything was great.
- Jacob (10/5): -
- Nils (8/5): -
- Christopher (9/5): Superb Ryokan for Magical Miyajima Visit - Clean and amazing location. Seemed a bit short staffed at dinner/breakfast but nothing serious. Just didn’t reach the level of attention the rest of the resort provided.
- Alberto (10/5): - Local
- cecilia (10/5): Like a dream. We loved it. - Miyajima is quite unique, and staying there in a place like Iwaso is a privilege. It is beautiful, the staff is perfect, the honsen is lovely, and dinner was excellent. Nothing.
