Guest Reviews
- Roberto (10/5): Great affordable japanese style accomodation - Beautiful japanese style affordable accommodation close to Kyoto by train.
Shuji is an exceptional host! He and his wife were very welcoming and kind to us. He gave us great tips on what to visit in Otsu. They also had a cafe that serves breakfast.
Shuji is a kind hearted man who makes sure he walks you through the check in process in detail. Please be aware that he takes his time doing this so you have to be patient with him. There are things that are very obvious but he wants to make sure you get all the instructions so again, be patient.
The japanese style accommodation is very cozy and comfortable, it has everything you need and more.
Thank you Shuji !
- Martin (10/5): The perfect house in Otsu for careful guests! - We just stayed here for one very nice month at a bargain price.
First, you need to know that to enjoy staying at this house, you need to be a clean person and not mind carefully following the owner’s instructions. If either of these items is at all a problem, this house would not be good for you. If you are fine with carefully obeying the rules, you will likely love this place. For what you pay versus the comfort and convenience of your time here, for my wife and I this house was wonderful. The owners, Shuji and his wife are great, you just need to understand that you are staying at their place and not just renting some house for awhile. It is an older Japanese house in a splendid neighborhood with very attentive owners! If you do not like the usual feather pillows and comforters, they have plenty of blankets to use instead. The A/C units put out plenty of heat plus the kotatsu table and small heater will take care of you in winter.
The location is fabulous for visiting Shiga and Kyoto. Even going to Osaka was easy and fast. We are from Hawaii and so we traveled by train nearly every day. It takes minutes to walk to the local Keihan train stop. From that point it is possible to easily go everywhere, often in only one or two transfers. The local train even becomes the subway into the best parts of Kyoto. The house is located between the local train line and the big JR line, but just far enough that it is wonderfully quiet here at night which we loved.
The close by Friend Mart grocery store is not a long walk and has nearly all of what you need. A little further walk gets you anything you need. We traveled all over the Lake Biwa area and had a perfect time. We do not ever watch TV in Japan so we were fine without it. There is no television here so keep that in mind if you need it. For us, no TV means less trump. We use a pocket WiFi in Japan, so we cannot rate the home service.

- Lea (7/5): Good - Close to a station and a bigger highway, so there's always some kind of place open nearby - convenience store or restaurant. Close to major sights in the area and easy to get around and quiet. Guest house has everything you need. The owner has a lot of rules about the stay in the house, some downright to the point of how to leave the stuff in the house. Check in procedure took about 2 hours. So if you're in a hurry or have tight schedule, please be aware of it in advance.
- Wei-yu (10/5): Exceptional - Shuji and his wife are always friendly.
They give best quality of service.
Thanks to their hospitality, I had a great trip during my stay.😆
When I have time, I’ll definitely come back and visit. None
- Yichien, (10/5): A lovely 6 star ⭐️ guesthouse close to the lake! - I love the way the host treats his guesthouse and the guests!
Amazing patience and detailed information and instructions on the house and the surrounding, one must take time to be able to appreciate it.
I love the breakfast the lady of the house prepared was delicious! Great hand drip coffee from the host! Shuji! Many thanks!
It’s a 6 star boutique guesthouse! Nothing really
- Pin (10/5): Exceptional - Everything is clean and tidy. Here gets anything a visitor needs!
- Rea (10/5): An excellent choice for an authentic Japanese stay without the high cost of the ryokans - It was a traditional Japanese house with tatami floors and a beautiful garden to enjoy. The hosts were attentive and very kind and the beakfast on offer absolutely delicious! You need to be prepared for the long and detailed orientation to the place. As I knew about it from a previous guest’s comments I was ready and didn’t mind it
- Danhui (5/5): Be careful not to be late. - The room is very tidy. Be careful not to be late. The landlord will be very angry and teach you a lesson.Located not close to the city center. Please note that the landlord's introduction is too long.
- Celia (6/5): 2hrs to check-in, host was rude and a busybody. - Great location if you want something a bit more rural and affordable, house with charm. - 2 hrs to check-in! We arrived at 9pm and this was the longest introduction of rules we ever seen . The host Shiju clearly has an OCD about keeping things clean and COVID free, your temperature will be checked and there are tons of rules he will slowly explain... While some rules make sense there are tons of information that shouldn't be mandatory (eg how to use mouthwash, how use a shower or maps) 30 mins should be the maximum for check-in.
- while the wife (who is a great cook) was very friendly and hospitable, the husband Shuji was set on being rude to me. I got sick on Xmas eve and he felt he had the right to tell us I had ruined our stay and then kept being rude to us because we decided to spend a night away without telling them. He feels the need to monitor your movements all the time and when we came back he stared at us without acknowledging us waving at him. He went in our room in our absence due to his OCD despite asking for nothing. He is old and pride himself in his former experience as a host, however he feels very entitled to comment and judge without checking facts. I first thought it was old age and poor English but he is fully aware of what he is saying. Until his last message two days before we checked out, we were ready to leave a higher review, however his rudeness and entitlement made us rate this a 6 and we will not come back.
- the house is very poorly insulated and very cold at night in half of the place. Not ideal for winter stay.
- Szuhsiao (9/5): Superb - The landlord is very devoted to his job and his guest house. At first look, he seems to be a serious person, but from the photos on the wall, one can see he is a man with stories. And also the landlord's wife is a great cook. The breakfast is just great. We had a very pleasant stay at guest house AN.
- Andy (10/5): Exceptional - Shuji and his wife are very friendly and hospitable. Though the 90-minute check-in procedure is a bit lengthy but Shuji does it so both of you and him can have a good experience. Once you check in, you’re pretty much left to your own device.
Would come back to AN if I visit Otsu again.
- Yongdae (10/5): Master piece of guest house - 1. Really clean more than you can expect, you will come to know what 'sprit of clean' is. They take care of the houese something like master piece
2. Great breakfast. Don't miss the chance to have breakfast here.
3. Great service spirit of the guest house owner. They are veeeery kind.
4. Really suitable for experiencing traditionl japanese house.
Thank you. Shuji, I really appreciate your effort to manintain your guest house. I can't not forget 2 nights I stayed there. and I promiss that I will go there smetime soon. I think 2 nights is too short. By then, please take care of your health more.
thanks.

- Jelisaveta (10/5): Exceptional - I liked absolutely everything!!! Hosts are very welcoming, very kind and attentive. You have a whole Japanese style house for yourself. You can rent bicycles for a small fee. Close to the station and in a middle of residential area with beautiful Japanese houses and gardens. I saw some people complained in their comments about long introduction to the rules, but for us it was very nice too. After you learn what and how, you feel more relaxed and can fully enjoy. If I had such a house where many elements are made from wood, had tatami etc- I would also like to explain my guests how to use it. We also had breakfasts that were exquisite for a very fair price. Our hosts made us feel like at home and also made many recommendations what to visit around. I am grateful I could be welcomed in such a way and I am sorry I could not stay longer. This is definitely a place where you can stay for a longer period, visit Kyoto (30 mins by train), cycle around the lake and further, play tennis in a park nearby. All that for very nice price:) nothing to dislike
- Rinv (8/5): If you can spare 1 hour and 40 minutes for the briefing by owner - Very clean, very well equipped, very comfortable We arrived at 3pm, and the briefing conducted by the owner lasted till 4.40pm. (And that's with skipping the dishwasher and TV instructions during the briefing, as we said we will not use them). The owner will also let you know that he will access the premises to check on things when you are out sightseeing. If you can stomach all that, this is really a good and cheap place to stay.
- Darian (10/5): Lovely, Convenient, Affordable Place Run by a Nice Couple - This place is run by a very helpful Japanese couple. It's spacious, accommodating, clean, affordable and conveniently located for exploring southern lake Biwa. You can order breakfast to start your day, and they even included delicious homemade dessert on our last morning there. They also gave us great advice on the best places to visit. There was only one issue with our stay. The check-in/orientation was more than an hour and a half. Guests should be informed ahead of time of this, so they can include it in their plans. But really, the orientation should be shortened.
