- Felix (10/5): Ein perfekter Aufenthalt. - Die Familie führt den Ryokan mit viel Liebe. Wir waren dort auf Hochzeitsreise und es war wirklich daps Highlight der Reise. Wenn wir könnten würden wir 100 Punkte vergeben. Die Onsen im Ort sind wunderbar und der Affenpark ist ganz in der Nähe. Aber der Service, das Kaiseki Menü und der Aufenthalt im Shibu Hotel waren für uns einfach das Highlight.

The traditional rooms gave us an authentic Japanese experience, while still having everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There is a private outdoor onsen that we absolutely enjoyed, as well as a private indoor onsen, which was also very nice to have. It made our stay even more special and relaxing. The hotel’s location is excellent, with easy access to the town’s main street. We also had dinner and breakfast at the hotel, and both were absolutely delicious. Tip: go see the snow monkeys as early as possible to avoid larger crowds. Be warned that lunch options are limited in Shibu Onsen. For the places that are open for lunch, make sure you have some cash because some don’t take credit cards.

- Anna (10/5): Great ryokan style hotel. Highly recommended. - It may sound weird but i really liked it that a lot of the items and decor were older but very well maintained. They seem to really respect the items they use and not replace everything unnecessarily every 2-3 years, which gave the hotel a really nice lived-in ambiance. The staff were very attentive and polite. The price includes a multicourse fine dining style dinner in a private room, and the hotel has their own shuttle bus that they will use to drive you to the monkey park and back or the station and back. You can also use private hotel outdoor onsen which is very nice in the winter (you sit in a very hot tub with snow all around you).

- Annett (8/5): Great stay at a warm family owned resort hotel - The location was excellent, right in the heart of the charming resort town of Shibu Onsen. The staff were outstanding, and we really appreciated the pickup from the train station as well as the shuttle to the monkey park. Everyone was very kind and attentive to our needs. The hotel’s onsen was also very enjoyable. We stayed just after New Year, so the room rate was quite high, but we understand that the whole town was sold out and demand was exceptionally high. The town shuts down very early at night so it was a challenge to get dinner after 8pm and there was no dinner at the hotel.

- Nick (10/5): Recommend!! - Really beautiful building with amazing hosts. It is located right in the river which looks stunning covered in snow. The staff were really attentive and welcoming and all the little touches such as cute little complimentary drinks made us smile. The outdoor onsen was something special too. There’s a lovely cafe round the corner “Yamanochi” The room facilities were a little outdated but it definitely wasn’t a major due to all the positives 🙂

- Diane (10/5): Excellent - best place I have stayed - this would be one of the best places i have ever stayed (and i travel a lot). the staff, the food, the location, the private outdoor onsen, the showers, the beds were all excellent. the shuttle pickup from train,to the snow monkey park and from snow monkey park and back to train were all included and prompt. stay for at least two nights to explore the village, snow monkey park and area having to leave!

From the moment we arrived, the thoughtful touches impressed us – our names were on shoe cubbies and our room door. When we went down for the multi-course traditional dinner, we were met with a warm welcome by a line of staff who even placed name tags on our shoes. This dinner was a culinary masterpiece, truly one of the most incredible dining experiences of my life. The ryokan was impeccably clean, and our room was spacious and spotless. The food, especially the unforgettable dinner and breakfast, is an absolute must-try. A delightful surprise was the availability of generously sized yukatas that comfortably fit both my husband and me (both over 280 lbs). The hotel’s hot spring was pristine and beautiful, offering a tranquil retreat and a lovely outdoor hot spring. They also offered a private hot spring for families/groups for an additional charge. The level of service was truly exceptional. They took care of our car, and upon check-out, it was brought to the entrance, backed in for easy loading. As a final touch, they even wiped our car windows before our departure. Without a doubt, this has been one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had, and I've traveled to over 20 countries. - Irene (10/5): Traditional luxury Onsen experience in near Nagano - This traditional Onsen and inn has excellent staff that is very patient, kind, thoughtful, and pays attention to details. They were very friendly, and willing to speak English to explain and introduce new foods. No matter what time we stopped by front desk, they answered our questions with a smile. They cleaned mud off our shoes after our visit to snow monkey park. Their shuttle service to park and train station was super helpful. They even returned my mother’s forgotten hat to her on the rapid express train before we left town after check out.

- Amir (8/5): - Staying the night here was unnecessary and expensive. I would advise you to visit the monkey park and then continue onward to wherever you’re headed. Having said that should you decide to spend the night, the room was large comfortable and well appointed. Beds were comfy and there was free tea and beverages in the public lounge. The kaiseki dinner was good but the breakfast was a single tray set menu. No buffet. It’s a sleepy town with 9 onsens, so spring onwards might be worth to get the onsen key, put on your Yukata and go to town (sic). The owners brother drives the shuttle to the money park and the station. He is a lovely person!!! Oh and don’t miss the Chokkun Izakaya. The owner is a character alongwith his wife so you will have a very enjoyable and filling meal - guaranteed.

- Raphael (10/5): A wonderful spot to experience Shibu Onsen - Such a wonderful stay! The staff were so friendly and accommodating. They drove us to and from Yudanaka station, and had no trouble offering us vegetarian kaiseki. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a great sunset view.

Shuttle from train station and also shuttle to Snow Monkey Park and back was a great bonus. The owners are really nice. All the staff went out of their way to treat the best. Really enjoyed our time there. Comp drinks in lobby and in the room were great. We would stay here again and every time we are in this lovely little town. The shoe thing in the lobby was over cumbersome. Took a couple times doing it to get it together.
- Erika (9/5): Great service and onsen - The room is spacious and the onsens in the hotel are great. I really recommend trying the outdoor private onsen, that was our favourite. The food was very high quality and the staff was very polite and helpful. Very close to the public onsens of the village. They also offer free shuttles to the station and the monkey park if needed, that is explained in advance. They also had English speaking staff members (not so important to us as we speak Japanese) overall great service and very good hotel. Not that we didn't like it, it was just unusual that they asked for our car key to park the car for us (it's similar to parallel parking which is not a thing in Japan, so I'm sure this is great help for many guests). We haven't experienced this kind of service in Japan so we were a little confused about it.

- Stuart (10/5): Great customer service and a nice place to stay with access to the 9 public onsen in the town - Very nice traditional hotel decent price and friendly staff. They picked me up from the train station and even drove my luggage to the next hotel I was booked at since they only had the one day available. They also took me to the snow monkey park for free even though it was after my check out time and found my next hotels shuttle bus to have them take me to my hotel after I was done. Excellent customer service definitely worth staying there. Also you get access to the 9 pubic onsen in town.

The owners are just so lovely and really add to the character of the hotel. Sitting in the hotel outdoor bath while it snowed is hard to beat. My suggestion is stay at least 2 nights and on the final day, leave on the 10.50am train which will give you enough time for one final onsen after breakfast. Nothing

It felt like traditional Japan. We had half board that allowed us to try japanese food beyond what we would dare to order in a restaurant. The staff was exceptional!

- Kerri (10/5): - We were picked up from the train and immediately got a ride to the monkey park, a major reason for our visit. The hotel then sent a shuttle to pick us up and return us to the hotel where our luggage had already been taken to the room. This was a more traditional place with shoe removal and slippers provided. Dinner was incredible despite my not loving a few of the items in the set course menu. Breakfast was equally fulfilling. We did not take advantage of the public onsens due to our short visit but did use the private onsen in site. At the end of the stay we were driven back to the train station for our departure and given a small token of candies. An excellent stay!

- Jackie (9/5): High hotel price, no food, saw monkeys, hiked - Our room was large and beautiful. I liked that there was a shuttle to take us to and from the monkey hot spring park. The shuttle will also pick you up from train station. There were only 2 monkeys at monkey park , but the hike was worth it - really beautiful hike-eat at the park’s restaurant it was great food at a good price. The hotel gives you a key to all the onsens in town. The town had a few cute shops. The hotel employees were all very nice. I assumed when I booked and they asked me about food allergies that breakfast and dinner were included- the price of this hotel was really high- mid $300’s so I assumed food included. But on arrival they said the meals were not included- though I will admit it was my fault that I didn’t scroll down and see the half board option.. it would have raised the price to over $500 for one night. Not getting breakfast was an issue because there was only one place in town to get breakfast and it was not good. For the price a basic breakfast should be included.
- Kay (10/5): - Superb onsen experience. Our room was very clean with comfortable tatami/futon. Outdoor and indoor onsen was very pleasant as were the private onsen. Kaiseki was delicious and filling. Most of all staff and owners were very welcoming and kind. Will come back.
- Cindy (7/5): Wonderful owners and staff but do check which rooms you are booking. - The location was good for us as we wanted to stay in an onsen town. The owners are absolutely wonderful. We were very kindly given a lift to the monkey park and to a lovely spot to take some pictures and were really looked after during our stay. We had one Japanese style dinner and breakfast during our two night stay. It was delicious with real attention to detail and was beautifully presented. All the staff were lovely and warm. You are given a 'master' key to the nine different onsens in town to use at your leisure (during opening hours) Our room was very dated and overpriced for what it was. Breakfast and dinner came at extra cost. This was the most expensive location we stayed at during our two weeks in Japan - it was offset a little by the availability of the town onsens and the lovely welcome from the owners.
- Naveera (10/5): Loved it! Very unique experience! - The staff was helpful and pleasant. The food was great considering it is a traditional Japanese meal. We were a group of Asians and Caucasian Americans, with not everyone used to eating traditional Japanese food, but everyone enjoyed the meals. There was plenty to eat, and it was fun to discover what was next. I strongly recommended adding the meat option to round off your meal. We tried the traditional room, sleeping on the mats. It was fine for me, but my husband would have preferred a regular bed, so if you have someone that has back issues or may need more comfort, you may want to consider the regular beds. However, they also provide extra blankets so you can layer them on the mats to have more cushion.

I especially like the fact that they picked us up from our bus stop and took us to Snow monkey River. Thereafter, we called them, and they picked us up and took us to the hotel. The private onsen was amazing. I enjoyed it. The 13 course meal was exceptional and tasty This is a must place hotel to be at because they make the whole transition from the bus stop to their place very easy. There is a couple that runs the place and they are helpful, professional, and beautiful!!!

- David (10/5): - We had the best time at the Shibu Hotel! The staff was so friendly and went above and beyond to accommodate us and make us feel welcome in their little slice of paradise. Our room was beautiful! We were given rides to and from the train station, rides to and from snow monkey park, two great meals, and friendly helpful service at every juncture. The hotel’s private and public onsen’s are great but don’t miss out on the public bath house tour!!! The hotel perfectly placed in the middle of the public bath house tour and will give you a map and a key to access each little bath. One of the best experiences of our entire Japan trip (or any trip). I would also pick one night to and try one of the local restaurants. We loved our smokey bar and home closing experience at a place down the road called Chokkun Izakaya.
- Ronald (9/5): Excellent choice - Friendly very helpful and welcoming hosts. Loved the spacious room, very comfortable beds. Dinner and breakfast were very enjoyable with my vegetarian diet easily accommodated. Private onsen was free which was great, but looked like it needed a good scrub clean and the ceiling was mouldy.

Their property is so healing and peaceful with their on property private Onsen’s. Their close location to the snow monkey park was so worth it as well!
