Guest Reviews
- Stephen (10/5): Just lovely - Very welcoming, shame the kitchen closes on Sundays at 5pm but breakfast was truly great
- Gordon (10/5): - easy parking, good size of room with comfy bed, good food and friendly staff.
- Philip (10/5): Great place to stay... - Easy to find, easy to park, great staff, excellent service, tidy, comfortable rooms, amazing breakfast. Couldn't fault anything, a great stay.
- Keith (6/5): - All of the staff were friendly and helpful, the evening meal in the restaurant was good.
However, we found the room we stayed in a little disappointing and whilst accepting it is within an old and character property we felt it need a little bit more attention.
There were several nosies that we found a bit obtrusive, e.g. the road noise was quite constant and noticeable (we understand that this is not something the accommodation can easily rectify) there were several 'plumbing' related noises, some from the adjoining rooms but also a loud pump or fan noise within the room itself which started up at random times.
As we were only there one night it was not too problematic.
Without the above issues we would have rated it higher.
- Rebecca (10/5): Little gem - What a charming pub with rooms! The food was beautiful and the service was fantastic! Great value for money and generous breakfast included. I was shown to my room - which are really well thought out for things needed (i.e. full length mirror / iron and ironing board) and was pleasantly surprised to see some rooms had outdoor seating :) Would recommend maybe the bathroom windows are frosted over as mine overlooked the car park and ground floor but only had to pull the blind down. I believe it has been taken over recently so sure more improvements will be coming! Will definitely return! Thank you for a lovely stay :)
- Matthew (8/5): - Good place to stay- friendly staff and fantastic food
- derek (10/5): - Great location, minutes off A34. Great staff, good food and value for money.
- Todd (8/5): - Nice little rooms. Good staff, good food. A mini fridge in the room would have been nice
- Meredith (10/5): Wonderful break from chain hotels being all same - Fun rural facility with unique rooms, nice setting. Very pleasant staff.
- Graeme (8/5): Highclere stop over - Close to Highclere Castle with plenty of parking spaces and a nice restaurant.
The evening meal was good, the pie of the day is superb and the Arkell’s 3B beer is delicious.
- Trevor (10/5): - Staff brilliant nothing else to say would definitely stay again
- HEATHER (8/5): - My room was a little tired, but for the price I wasn't expecting the Ritz.
Perfectly functional, with comfy bed, good shower over bath. Nice extras of biscuits and bottled water.
Staff in pub great, food really tasty, food and beer very reasonably priced.
Felt very safe and welcomed as a single traveller.
Will happily return.
- Derek (10/5): - What a lovely find! Staff great food fabulous, great friendly locals.
The room what can I say best bed ever only stopped one night. Can't wait to return
- Jackson (10/5): - Great food a
- Victoria (10/5): - .
- William (10/5): - Good staff and service and weather was good for our stay
Room was outdated and a little old
Shower broken and needs updating

- Garry (10/5): - Very friendly staff, clean property, great breakfast

- Graham (10/5): Wonderful - Everything about this place is wonderful. The bar, the restaurant, the food, the staff, the rooms. Loved it all.
- Timothy (10/5): - Quaint place, quiet, in the country, and a full bar
- Roger (10/5): Fabulous stay. - Fabulous service. Characterful room with all modern facilities. All staff particularly Eve were so welcoming, attentive, and professional.
Highly recommended. We will return.
- kevin (8/5): - Staff were very good and cheerful. Very much a local pub still, which we enjoyed, especially when the rugby was on!
We were in Bedroom 8, which in busy times would suffer with a lock of privacy being overlooked by the path down the side and a glamping tent behind.
The cooked breakfast was fantastic, but that's all there was, no fruit or cereal. We did enjoy our stay there however.
- Jan (10/5): Value for money - Lovely staff, good food, value for money. Location and parking good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely cosy pub, excellent food and service - A very comfortable last minute stay in this lovely pub. The rooms are very cosy and comfortable, the service outstanding and the food just delicious. The only thing I'd change is the plug and bright green fire escape lighting that illuminates the room too much for a good night's sleep. Overall a very lovely stay.
- Sheila (10/5): - Friendly place to stay in the country not too far from Newbury. Good good and freshly cooked.
- J (10/5): Excellent stay - Excellent accommodation. The room 'Bigwig' was large, comfortable with a spacious ensuite.
Clean and well decorated. The pub did lovely food both day, evening and breakfast.
We were made to feel very welome and the service was really good. Would definitely visit again and wish the guys the best of luck in their new endeavour.
- Ian (6/5): - The room was OK. We had dinner and the food was OK with a reasonable choice. I was happy with the breakfast too. I thought the cost was very reasonable.
- Audrey (10/5): - Great stat, nice and quite
- Paul (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay and will return
- Henrietta (10/5): - We had a lovely night here on the evening of the relaunch. Accommodation was comfortable and clean with plenty of room. We had a great meal in the lounge.
Really good to see a village pub taking on a new lease of life with ambitious, energetic and enthusiastic staff.
- J (10/5): - Absolutely fantastic staff. The food was excellent. Will definitely be back when in the area.
- Verified traveler (8/5): 2 Nights Stay - The queen bed was made from 2 twin mattresses which were rather stiff. Our sleep wasn't the best.
The shower had some mold on the caulking.
The food and service in their restaurant was excellent. Also, the staff was very friendly.
Walking to Highclere Castle, even though fairly close, is not recommended.
- helen (10/5): - Perfect overnight stay, clean and comfortable with thoughtful extras in the room. Lovely breakfast and welcoming staff
- David (4/5): - A duvet was left on floor when arrived at accommodation
Couple of bits of furniture dirty & dusty
Only one coat hanger in room
No heating
Tv didn’t work properly
Black grouting in shower & didn’t drain so overflowed
Also on our second day water came through ceiling as shower in room above also overflowed so dangerous with electric lighting.
No information filled in on fire regulations on wall
Not a cooked breakfast as advertised
The room did not look as good as pictures
The good things were ironing board & iron provided & hairdryer
Good tea tray selection
Shower gel & shampoo provided
Very near Highclere Castle
- Danny (8/5): Family trip to Highclere. - Booked this plqce as it's close to Highclere Castle. Check in was quick and easy. Room was nice although the mattress was a bit hard for me. Good Wi-Fi. Some nice snavlcks in the room. Booked a table for dinner and the food and service were excellent. Fair nights sleep. Breakfast is included and again cooked fresh and was great. Checked out and headed to Downtown Abbey.
- Philip (10/5): - Excellent accommodation 5 minutes from Highclere Castle, free breakfast was amazing and the food on offer from the restaurant topped the one night stay. Accomodation is not attached to the pub but a walk across the car park, room’s three doors are in need of a joiner’s attention as they need easing to stop them catching on the floor but is adequate for a reasonably priced room
- Lisa (8/5): - Super cute and quaint place to stay near Highclere Castle. I am quite picky about where I stay and had reservations about this place before we arrived. They exceeded my expectations. Adorable room, very clean, and the included breakfast was wonderful. We were a 3 minute drive to our destination. We enjoyed dinner and drinks at the restaurant/pub the day before. The staff were so friendly cheerful, and fun. I brought my teenage kids and they really enjoyed it as well. That is really saying something!(Thank you to the wait staff! We now call our daughter "Naughty Taylor", using an English accent of course. I highly recommend staying here if you are wanting to enjoy the Downton Abbey experience at Highclere.
We did not have our dog with us on this trip, but a few other families did. They are very pet friendly.
- PATRICK (6/5): Disturbed nights sleep. - Our room was pleasant but small. Other guests upstairs seemed to clomp around all night. No joists between floor and our ceiling. I didn’t sleep well but my husband did. Excellent breakfast. Annoying it was last orders at eight in the bar but the bar staff and the chef were great.
- Terri (8/5): - Adorable place with wonderful and helpful staff
- Brenda (10/5): - Liked: The nice room and en-suite; nice snacks included.
Didn't like: There was a problem with something in the room directly overhead that was causing an extremely loud, motor-type noise that woke me up very late at night and lasted for a long time, after which getting back to sleep was impossible. It was reported, but no-one seemed to know what to do about it. The towel rail in the bathroom was dangerously hot and you had to be careful not to get burnt.
The menu in the restaurant was very limited. If you are vegan or vegetarian, give it a miss unless you don't mind the only option available, which was a burger (predictably!). My husband ordered the gammon and ended up leaving it as it was horrendous, even the eggs weren't at all nice. The bacon, sausage and eggs in the full english breakfast were so unpleasant, my husband had the vegan option on the second morning, which was more palatable.
Incidentally, if you want cereal as well as a cooked breakfast, make sure to tell the waiting staff that you want the cereal before the hot food is served, otherwise they will assume you want it all served up at the same time!!
- Colin Paul (8/5): - Very enjoyable stay staff great and food very good
- Laurie (6/5): - The staff was fabulous! They were kind and helpful, got us extra blankets and just went above and beyond to help our stay be good. The food at the restaurant was very good and there were snacks and hot chocolate in our room which we really appreciated! The shower/bathroom was good and we would have given this location 6 stars if possible (I rarely give more than 4 stars) but the bed was not good. There was a huge dip all the way across the mattress about in the middle and we couldn't sleep. If they could replace the mattress I would change my stars to 5 and encourage everyone to go there. It was really great!
- IAN (2/5): Disgusting ,Terrible and Uncomfortable - The room was basic with damp on the walls ,the bed extremely uncomfortable ,no heating and had to ask 3 times for the radiator to be turned on which they couldn’t do, the floor above was so badly insulated that you could hear everything in the room above ,the hotel did not provide fresh towels or make up service the following day ,no food available in the evening …which for a pub is strange ….a terrible place …avoid at all costs and find something else
- Anthony (10/5): Carpenters Arms is a perfect pub next to Highclere - Stayed two nights for a long weekend, perched on the edge of Highclere Castle for our visit.
Quite close to the A34, but even though our room was on that side we had no traffic noise.
Nice little room upstairs in the cottage next door.
Breakfast was included and that was excellent.
Also had two evening meals, sample photos attached. Chef is very talented.
Would happily return.
- Andrew (6/5): - Quiet Location for an overnight stay
- Jolyon (8/5): - Excellent cooked breakfast
- Paul (10/5): - Great location just off Newbury bypass, nice country pub with the accommodation attached next door.
I only had breakfast but there was a good choice and well cooked. Nice peaceful nights sleep
- Mark (10/5): - Perfect stay, younger lady who was front of house was 10 out of 10
- Primrose (10/5): - Beautiful quaint and quiet place. Lots of charm. Loved it.
- Andrew (10/5): Excellent location, value, welcome & service. - Helpful, friendly staff. Great value, superb breakfast, great location. Really good team, thank you.
- Ian (10/5): Great place to stay - Great staff, a really nice room, and a lovely breakfast. Good value compared to surrounding hotels and b+b's. Very convenient for the A34.
- Harvey (8/5): - Great place to stop if on way to Southampton from up North or Midlands. Very convienient off the main A34 road, staff great, food very good and great service.
- Crispin (10/5): - Swift and efficient check in. Very pleasant well appointed en suite room. Super selection of tea, coffee and biscuits in the room. First class breakfast selection next morning.
- Andrew (10/5): Hearty recommendation. - Family gathering for a lunch then an overnight for us with dog. Great food. Brilliant service. Super friendly. Room v good and big bed.
- Tracey (6/5): A tad disappointed - Restaurant evening meal excellent. The pub/restaurant is lovely. Staff very good. The breakfast was just ok nothing fancy (last time was much better). But unfortunately for us this time the let down was the room was too cold, we had to ask for the heating to be put on when we arrived at 7pm. It obviously went off during the night as we were both awake 3am freezing. No blankets. No way to turn the heating on. Luckily the shower was read hot the following morning as the heating didn’t come on until we were going for breakfast. Sorry Carpenters we were return guests but will have to rethink staying again in winter months. Sorry if this seems negative, your pub & restaurant is beautiful inside, your staff are great. I would return for evening meal&drinks but not overnight unless it’s summer.
- Anne (10/5): - Very conveniently located for our visit to Highclere Castle. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Nicely decorated with Christmas baubles and spacious/airy dining room where we thoroughly enjoyed a delicious evening meal. We stayed in the converted cottage in the grounds and were very pleased with the facilities - our room had everything we needed. Very good breakfast included in the price! Lovely English pub, would certainly recommend and would stay there again. Extremely good value for money.
- Julie (10/5): Prefect stay in the countryside - This place looked like it was straight out of a storybook. Saying it was beautiful would be an understatement. It was beyond picturesque with the most beautiful setting. The service was top notch. The staff were beyond friendly. The food was excellent and the fish and chips were probably the best I had while in the UK. One night was game night in the pub and the was so much fun! I loved how all of the locals from the village would come and enjoy themselves at the pub. Again, it was like a movie. It was extremely close to Highclere Castle. I highly recommend this lovely place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Highly recommended - Lovely little room with everything you could ever need inc crisps and chocolate!
- Andrew (6/5): - The property for the accommodation was quite nice, a little cottage adjoining the pub in the carpark, the rooms was nice, however, the bathroom could do with a makeover, the tap on sink would not turn of, and the light in the dressing area to which had been reported the week before our visit and still not fixed, was flickering and then stopped working. We reported this on the Friday evening and again on the Saturday evening, to which the reply was we will have to order one, When last week?
The menus for the food for an evening meal was basic and little choice. However was very nice. The service was good and the young people were really nice and could not do enough for you.
This place is a sitting gold mine, beautiful location really nice rustic pub restaurant, but the owners do not seam to be around and lacked a front of house person.
In addition lacked a bit of music in the back ground as when there are only a few people in the restaurant if felt a lack of atmosphere.
But generally a nice place just neends a bit of TLC.
- Giles (6/5): So nearly excellent - Efficient and friendly staff, nice food, good room and extremely comfortable bed…….central heating started reverberating from 6am and no chance of getting any sleep after that …….please sort it as it spoilt an otherwise great stay….
- Keith (10/5): A hidden gem - A genuinely excellent stay. Lovely rooms, nice, village location and fabulous ambience.
- Dale (10/5): Superb Service - My wife and I originally reserved a room for three days but back problems forced me to add four additional days. Staff was extremely consoling and even though occupancy was 100% they found us a room on the property. You will not find better customer service anywhere. Thank you.
- Sam (10/5): - Relaxing retreat
- Darlene (10/5): - Wonderful old property in the English countryside near to Highclere Castle, and not far from Windsor Castle. We didn't get as much time as we would have liked, but really enjoyed the time we had!
- JO (10/5): - So close to Hyclere Castle.
Wonderful Sunday roast!!
Really cute, clean property.
- Kathleen (10/5): - Beautiful & quaint & quiet accommodation adjacent to the pub. The staff are wonderful, upon arrival we were greeted and shown to our room by Kimberly who also came to our rescue and drove us to Highclere Castle after we got lost. Every morning is a lovely breakfast included with your stay of fruit, yoghurt, meats& cheese, cereal and hot pastries and toast with tea, coffee, and orange juice. Cannot say enough about the staff of this place and the whole friendly atmosphere here. The manager Luke kindly offered to drive us to train station rather than calling a cab. Lovely place to stay for visiting Highclere Castle but the staff are who really make this place so very special. What lovely memories we will have. Walking distance to Highclere Castle.
- Tracey (10/5): - Quaint pub with very friendly staff. Room very nice decor, many extras in room and really comfortable bed. Food is freshly cooked and delicious.
- Angie (8/5): - Very helpful staff considering their kitchen was closed.
- Gary (10/5): - Cute rustic workers’ cottage style room. Good pub and food - friendly staff. Nice country stay. And short drive to Newbury
- Mark (10/5): - Our room was super cute, though the lack of coverings in bathroom and entry door could be better as they put your privacy at risk.
The staff were superb, very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent, well done to the young chef!
Couldn't have picked a better place to stay, we highly recommend this character filled hotel.
- Debbie (10/5): Excellent highly recommend - The setting was tranquil. The accomodation and pub were both beautiful and immaculate. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was very good . The complimentary snack box with crisps cake apple and mineral water was unexpected and thoughtful touch. Am planning a return trip later in the year
- Andrew (10/5): Terrific - A brilliant stay. Whilst the rooms do need an overhaul they are perfectly comfortable and well serviced. Pub hugely welcoming with very good food and service
- Michael (8/5): - Thought has been given to 'little things' that matter..... robes in the room for instance, cups/saucers/teapot at breakfast etc.
The only thing we didn't like was the carpet had not been fitted in the room, may be of course the room is scheduled for a refit!
- Hazel (10/5): - Amazing stay, beautiful surroundings and beautiful room. Well equipped with coffee machine, hair dryer, etc. Very friendly staff, great food and gluten free options. Lovely locals. We will definitely be coming back.
- lynn (6/5): - Tea/coffee machine impossible to understand
- John (10/5): - Rooms were seperate ftom the pub so no noise, Rooms clean and tidy eigh everything you need, The pub itself is a little gem , tastefully furnished with facilities for a drink and banter with the locals or for something to eat in the fine restaurant , food and service were excellent, just about to book for my next business trip
- Jake (6/5): - When arrived was greeted with kind friendly staff that took us too our room and at first glance looked like a really nice room however the room was freezing cold as there was no hot water at all or heating, the door even when locked could still be pulled open and the squeaky floor boards from upstairs made it hard to sleep, unfortunately would not stay again.
- trevor (10/5): - Excellent
- Shannon (10/5): - I was impressed with everything about the place. It certainly exceeded my expectations. I thought it would be an old country inn with rustic amenities and typical bar type food. Instead, it was updated and a bit posh, in comparison. I almost felt out of place there. =) The managers, Gemma and Shawn, worked really hard at making a great impression. I highly recommend the place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Ideal base for Highclere visit - Ideal base to beat the queues to get into Highclere early. The new landlords are welcoming and know some of the accommodation needs freshing up. Menu needs a wider choice
- Verified traveler (4/5): Friendly but not acceptable premises. - The room was tiny and quite spartan. The TV had no remote and there was no hot water in the morning. Gemma, the manager, was very friendly and tried hard but I am afraid she is working with an inferior property.
- Julie (10/5): Lovely Picturesque setting with friendly service. - Lovely 7 night stay at the Carpenters arms last week. Friendly welcome from Gemma and the team
We had a ground floor double room in a lovely cottage in the grounds of the pub. Ideally located close and convenient for our visit to Highclere castle.
We also had a delicious freshly cooked breakfast every morning for a very reasonable extra charge. Thank you Gemma and best wishes from Julie and Arthur from Liverpool
- Dorothy (8/5): - Our arrival at the Carpenters Arms was just at the end of the Lunch time so was a little rushed to eat before the kitchen closed however we had lunch which was very nice and then went to our room a good sized room, the pillows could do with an update and curtains hanging better. The Landlady had only been there for a week so everything was new to her ,she was welcoming food and menus good we enjoyed our stay.
- Richard (4/5): Great pub don't stay - Was welcomed nicely and love the pub food and location. However the room was shabby, the bed was uncomfortable, the shower was uncontrollable scolding hot only. The tv control was half usable and the exit sign light kept me awake most of the night..breakfast of any kind was not available although advertised as included and no reduction offered. Great stop for a beer and food was excellent but I won't be staying again ..sorry folks.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely cottage accommodation, fan very useful! Friendly helpful staff, beautiful surroundings.
- Amanda (6/5): - Room was very cold. I did arrive very late but not sure the radiator worked as a fan heater was on the floor which when you moved it, it cut out.
As I left early I didn’t get chance to speak to anyone.
The bedding was clean and bed comfortable.
The bathroom was clean but in need of updating.
- Lauren (8/5): Away for work - Easy to get a parking space on arrival, was welcomed and handed my keys, I arrived mid afternoon so only one member of staff was at the bar but welcoming all the same.
The room was lovely and clean, perfect little cosy size, wouldn’t suit more than a few nights.
Shower was powerful and clean, clean towels and toiletries were provided.
Nice warm room
Plenty of plug sockets, all of which had usb charge points which made things much easier.
I ate in the pub for dinner, lovely pub food. If anything, slightly too much as I didn’t have room for pudding and would have loved to have tried one.
Had an excellent nights sleep, bed was comfy.
I didn’t have breakfast as I had to leave too early, I wish I could have sampled it tho.
Would definitely recommend and May even be back one day
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stayed 2 nights while visiting Highclere Castle for Valentines event. Accommodation, cleanliness excellent. Breakfast was amazing and freshly cooked. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and our meals were excellent! The staff and locals in the pub made us very welcome. Would definitely stay again and thoroughly recommend.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Fantastic staff , disappointing maintenance , boiler packed up 2nd night and spent night without heating , cobwebs in windows with blackish soot / mould on windows - room no 4
Extremely disappointed and won’t stay never
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely quiet place, with the pub 100yds away. Staff were great
- Mark (8/5): Lots of character, comfy bed. - A quaint, characterful venue, next to a wonderful pub. Mind your head on the original wooden beams coming up the stairs, but other than that, it's a great place. One of the comfiest beds I've slept in (and I sleep in a different bed almost every night thanks to work travel!). The food at the pub is great as well, and you're only a few minutes away from Highclere Castle aka Downton Abbey!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A great place to stay, super friendly staff and great rooms. Food was lovely. Remarkable value for money
- Janet (8/5): - This was really lovely. Great room in a cottage. Nice pub. Food fair.
- Daniel (10/5): Excellent place - Very convenient and comfortable for a business trip, good food too.
- Martin (10/5): Country escape - A wonderful stay for a quiet getaway from the City, only one night sadly! Very friendly and helpful staff, good food and comfortable rooms. Would stay again
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice pub, good location and good food. Staff were excellent.
- scott (10/5): - Nice place good service
