Guest Reviews
- Long Sing Raymond (6/5): - Breakfast was good, room showed its age but reasonably clean, not much happening in nearby village
- George (10/5): - great place to stay, very friendly. No dinner option when I stayed due to maintenance but chippy over the road was great.
Breakfast was very good.
- Catherine (8/5): Great views of Hayden Bridge - Quirky hotel.
Lovely friendly staff in both the bar and at breakfast.
Very good cooked breakfast.
- MARTIN (8/5): Good location for local exploration - Booked for one night to explore the area, hotel was great, nice location, nice bar, most of the staff were friendly and smiley. can only offer an option on my room, unfortunately the bed is the most uncomfortable I have slept in.
- Ann (8/5): - Clean and tidy, well situated for Roman Wall and fishing, plus a great full English breakfast. Would stay again.
- Paul (2/5): - No food available when arrived at 6.30pm after travelling 6 hours. No chef available, bar staff lady said food MIGHT start 8.30pm, owner not in till later. No lift, room on 3rd floor, no-one to assist with luggage. Reception on first floor, no other people there - they must have known how awful it was. Expedia should review keeping this awful hotel on their books. Even local people have since advised not to use it. It was so awful we found alternative accomodation.
- Andrew (2/5): - Meal ordering was haphazard. I ordered a starter of soup but it did not arrive. I asked for a glass of water to go with my meal; I was asked if I wanted ice, I said yes please but was given a small glass of tepid water with no ice, on one of the hottest days of the year. At breakfast, I took some Bran Flakes but when I got to my table and started to eat them, I found there were nut flakes in them. I am allergic to nuts. There was no warning on the Bran Flake dispenser that nuts had been added. Also, the cooked breakfast consisted of a very small hash brown; one and a half small mushrooms, half a rasher of bacon, an adequate sausage and a fried egg, which was going cold by the time it arrived (also most hotels these days ask if you if want fried, scrambled, poached etc). Finally, although the room and the bathroom in general were clean and tidy, there was huge amounts of disgusting soap scum on the shower hose and on the bottom and behind the concertina shower doors, which cannot have been cleaned for months, if not years.
- Stephen (6/5): - The room was a little tired and could do with a spruce up.
The bed was comfy though.
- Carol (6/5): - This hotel is in a prime location. It’s very old. But a coat of paint clean grout and bedding that had been ironed would make all the difference
Drink at the bar was very expensive compared to other bars in the town.
Staff were lovely and breakfast wasn’t bad. Although everything had been pre cooked
It could be beautiful if the owner just put in a bit of effort
- Dean (8/5): - Bed was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly. Lovely location for visiting the area
- Franc (2/5): Worst hotel experience of my life. - Unfortunately, this was by far the worst hotel experience of my life.
As soon as I entered the hotel, I was gobsmacked by the horrible smell of the lobby. The carpet looked like it has never been cleaned. An elderly woman was struggling walking down the stairs as they had no lift. Nothing wrong with not having an elevator, but this should be noted prominently on the website in case anyone with physical limitations will know this before booking.
I had room number 8. I go into the room and was perplexed that there was no bathroom/toilet/shower. I asked the staff person, (friendly and helpful)… where is the bathroom? She explained for that room, it is across the hall. Talk about a major inconvenience!
I went down to the bar/restaurant to ask about any vegan options. This area had the same horrible smell and filthy environment. I knew right then I would do a take-away and eat in my room. There wasn’t anything on the menu I could have which was bizarre because their online menu had several options for vegans. (This was one of the reasons why I booked this place.)
Anyhow, I asked the staff person if the chef could prepare something suitable for me. The answer… go to the local Co-Op, buy something vegan and the chef would prepare a vegan meal!
I will never stay here again and wouldn’t book a room if they paid me to stay there.
- Ryan (10/5): Great stay! - Comfortable, quiet, clean, safe, and exceptional service. I would definitely stay again!
- Mike (4/5): - It was really cold, thee was a oil heater in the room which was nackered, gave out very little heat.
Considering it's 1st March they didn't put the heating on, the room was freezing all night, even in the dining room this morning there was only a tiny blow heater on,considering there was a stove in the room.
The breakfast was awful, very very poor.
- John (10/5): - Great Staff & welcome, food was exceptional.
- Andy (8/5): - Landlord and Landlady were very welcoming, nice pub very cozy and friendly
- Raymond (10/5): Want to go again - I really enjoyed my stay here. I was travelling for business so had little time for site seeing but the area was beautiful. Hotel was spotlessly clean and the food was amazing. Clearly run by someone who wants to provide excellent service. If I visit the area again this is the first hotel I will try to book.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Old historic building with plenty of charm. Friendly staff, clean rooms with amenities
- Chris (2/5): - Terrible service, no communication, and the Anchor Hotel certainly is a sinking ship, AVOID!!
- Ian (8/5): - Parking at the pub hotel was difficult as there is only a small car park and there are very narrow streets around the area. As there was no sign of a reception, checking in was challenging. The rooms themselves were very good, clean and had tea-making facilities, TV and an en-suite bathroom. The dinner menu was limited, but the breakfast menu was excellent. Be aware, the Friday night disco and karaoke goes on to 3.00am.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The owner was welcoming when we arrived. The room was cold had to put electric radiator on .The seat was stained ,the window was really drafty .
The bed linen had not been ironed .
- Stephen (10/5): - Staff were superb , service well above the norm !
- John (8/5): - Although the facilities were basic the hospitality was friendly and welcoming. This hotel served well as a halfway point to an onward destination
- Ian (8/5): - I really enjoyed my stay here. The location right by the river made it a great day as the sun was shining all day. There was a great selection of drinks in the bar. Pool, darts and skysports available. Loved the little snug/cocktail room with plenty of retro games to play from the windows. The onsite American food van provided us with some delicious food. We had the philli-cheese steak baguette. It was lush! Beds were really comfy. Credit goes to the owners who were very warm and pleasant.
- David (2/5): - Made to wait over two hours to see about changing a room. Not clean, especially one of our bedrooms. Food only available from a burger bar trailer in the car oark! Breakfast poor. Owners didn't seem to bothered.
- Carolyn (8/5): - I would have preferred more choice of food in the evening. The American diner food was very tasty but not really what i wanted.
- Barbara (10/5): - A very quirky hotel steeped in history. The recent new owners are wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. You really feel at home here. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is hearty. Evening meal not always available which perhaps should be communicated to guests. However the meal we had in the quirky Garden Room was superb. There is a burger van in the hotel car park with food cooked by James the hotel manager. This hotel is different and has a charm and a uniqueness which must be experienced. Thank you James and Susan and staff for a perfect 4 days at the Anchor Hotel. We will return !
Barbara and Mark. Ipswich Suffolk
- Daniel (10/5): Lovely stay. - Lovely room. Very hospitable hosts and other pleasant guests. Bit of a problem with hot water but hosts very quickly addressed it. Credit to the new owners, they did everything they could to make us welcome. Thank you.
- russell (8/5): - Had an enjoyable weekend away with my wife staff nice and friendly
- Richard (6/5): Cheap and cheerful - Cheap and cheerful. We read reviews so didn’t eat there except breakfast which was basic. On both days we were in the restaurant for 5 minutes before anyone took an order
- CDR (10/5): - Had a great stay at The Anchor Hotel. Owner James and his wife were very accommodating throughout my stay. The hotel was in a lovely setting, by the river and is steeped in history, being a Court house amongst other things. James the owner is very knowledgeable about this and is happy to talk about it. I will definitely be staying agai abd would highly recommend.
- Jan (4/5): - Very poor value for money. Damp rooms with paint peeling & towels feeling damp. We were told it's what to expect from a very old property. So much needs to be done there. We should have asked to see the rooms first before paying.
I moved rooms once as the first wasn't finished & smelt of cigarettes. (Not the odour from the scent sticks!
We were assured there would be an evening meal but told at 7.30 there was nothing.
I would have given it 1 star but the lady cooking breakfast was lovely & made a really nice scrambled egg.
- Jamie (10/5): Unexpected find - Intriguing spot Haydon Bridge and if you want to try it out the Anchor is the perfect spot to stop off. The hosts were warm and welcoming and nothing was too small to help with. Room was clean, smart and beautiful view of the river ask for this. Food was good pub grub, my Chilli beef was better than average for a pub. Would go back.

- Paul (10/5): - Great hotel for the price, lovely staff and breakfast
- Kathrin (10/5): - It's a really old building, full of character.
The hosts are lovely, having been there only a short time, they have created a charming dining room on the first floor, filled with light.
The breakfasts were delicious, individually prepared. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Ian (4/5): Very tired hotel - Pleasant staff but very tired hotel room in need of modernization. Strange breakfast; everything looked like it had been in the deep fat fryer - including the bacon! Could hear adjacent occupant snoring the walls were so thin.
- Steven (4/5): Needs a revamp everywhere. - Tried the Anchor for the first time. Evening meal was very poor. Cold chips tiny portion of peas and over done scampi. Breakfast was help yourself with the cooked items under a hot light tray server, but all items where not hot and eggs were like rubber so gave them a miss. Decor was very tired. Won’t go there again.
- Dennis (4/5): - The Property requires updating and falls very short on general facilities that you would expect. Staff were very helpful but the property and facilities let them down.
- John (10/5): Friendly place. - The hotel is a little tired but the new Landlord is hopeful of new renovations. The staff are very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. I had a comfortable stay. Great breakfast.
- Alan (10/5): - Quaint pub by the river
- Craig (10/5): - The Anchor Hotel was terrific in every way. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Jim was a perfect and accommodating host and 600 year old hotel/pub is classic!! The setting on the River with the ancient bridge was spectacular. In total we had a wonderful stay! Craig
- John (4/5): Disappointing stay needs action and refunding - This hotel did not deliver its offer.
We had:
Nobody to serve breakfast in morning (which the Hotel housekeeper agreed.)
No cooked at breakfast or any service
We also the room had no working TV.When we asked for a cable to enable it from the manager no person came.
The towels were also not great and the whole place needs a complete overhaul.
We were not the only one. Another couple stayed and had to drive a long way for a hot breakfast.
The staff in attendance ( not the hotel management) we met were friendly but we feel let down and want our money back.
We will never go there again.
- Kevin (4/5): Not a 7.8 score hotel - Pub has amazing riverside patios we had a drink then went to check in . The bar was very busy with one girl serving and doing her best . She needed help to check us in as she did not know what room to allocate but could not raise the boss as he was in bed at 4pm once she raised him he did not come down to help her and she finally got us checked in . The room was not in good condition with the walls filled in and painted different shades . The carpet was not that clean . Bedding was clean . At 730am we were woke by the fire alarm and evacuated the building but was no staff on site to advise . After about 10 minutes in the car park a guy arrived who had nipped out to the coop and turned off alarm no apology. Breakfast was surprisingly good .
- Kev (10/5): - Everyone was very friendly rooms we're nice great breakfasts
- Samantha (10/5): - Hotel and bar was really nice.. very friendly atmosphere was great
- Bernie (6/5): A bit like Fawlty Towers! - It was one night, the staff and owner are lovely and friendly and really want to do a good job. But the hotel is in dire need of investment and a good clean. The owner is lovely but seems like a fish out of water in this hotel. Does not feel like he has much experience in the hotel industry, can’t see this hotel surviving the winter.
- Paul (8/5): Nice - Nice place but cold overnight, no heating on
- Ruth (10/5): Lovely stay - Lovely stay, staff were brilliant. Thank you
- gary (6/5): - Pub was ok , no meals available in evening ,
Rooms abit dated
Breakfast was amazing thou best scrambled eggs i have had in years
- George (4/5): - Budget hotel in every sense of the word. I had cobwebs hanging from the lamp in my bathroom, low wattage bulb in my room which made it dim and difficult to read or write. Owner well meaning but hapless. Breakfast day one I ordered at 7:25 and did not receive until over 40 mins later. I was the only person dining, they were not that busy but I guess they had to wait for the hen to lay the eggs. Next day breakfast service was supposed to start at 7:00 AM but they did not open until 7:30 AM with profuse apologies. I watched owner arrive in his car at 7:35 and get out with a bag of groceries. He came in and offered to make a full breakfast but given how long it took the day before I simply refused and had cereal and checked out. You really get the feeling that the owner is trying but way in over his head.
- George (8/5): - Nice and pleasant staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good Value - Great value. Reasonably priced drinks and convenient location.
It is very much a pub with accomodation and can be quite loud with music at weekends.possibly not the venue for a quiet romantic break but ideal for a good value base to visit the local area. Nice breakfast.
Friendly staff always on hand.
- Louise (4/5): Badly let down by the mattress! - This hotel was very reasonably priced, so we didn't have high expectations, and were happy to put up with it being a bit tatty, we just wanted a cheap base to start off our trip around Northumberland...however, the one thing we didn't expect and couldn't put up with was the mattress - I actually didn't know mattresses that bad existed - there were springs poking out all over and it was almost impossible to sleep on - in the middle of the night, we actually considered sleeping on the floor and were only put off by the carpet being weirdly sticky in places. We'd booked for 2 nights, but left after the first one, bought an air bed and slept in the van - which was much more comfortable. if it wasn't for the mattress I would have given this hotel a reasonably good rating as I thought it was OK for the price - although the room was a bit tatty and in need of updating, the staff were friendly, the room was clean, and the breakfast was decent. The building actually has a ton of character and sits in a nice location - it could be lovely with a bit of a makeover. For the time being though - at least get new mattresses - people are throwing better ones in skips - you could probably get one for free!
- Derek (4/5): Disappointing - Booked a one-night stay while in the area for business. Check-in was fine and I was shown to my room and informed about breakfast by the bar maid. The room (room 3) was mouldy and needs updating. Mattress was one of the most uncomfortable things I've slept on. Bathroom was covered in mould and black mildew in the shower. It was late and I was tired or I would have moved hotels. Breakfast was great in a nice light and airy room, friendly chef took my order and it was delivered shortly after. Can't complain about breakfast but the room was shocking. Won't be staying here again.
- Thomas (8/5): - A bit out dated could do with a refer
- David (2/5): A poor excuse for a hotel - A complete nightmare of a hotel that I would not recommend to anyone. The only positive was that bedding was clean.
The rooms on the surface lock clean, but there are cobwebs and dust everywhere, there is mould in the shower, also there is no tea making facilities in the rooms.
The evening meal was a choice of two meals, which were badly cooked with my steak being covered in oil and burnt, and my fiancé meal being cold.
We were kept awake till the early hours by people that had been in the bar outside drinking, fighting and generally being noisy, all around our car and other guests cars , with no one from the hotel staff (some including the owners living in the hotel) interested in moving them on or what damage they were causing ( in the morning my car had loads of broken glass from bottles etc around it )
Breakfast was very poor, my bacon was swimming in grease and looked like it had been cooked in a deep fat fryer, there was mould on the bread which we pointed out to the owner but wasn’t replaced.
I know the owners are new and are from America, but I recommend that they hire a decent chef and not try to cook themselves, and sort the rooms out and firstly bring them up to date, the decor being a very poor eighties throwback, and supply the rooms with what guest expect to find kettles etc. Also sort out the rowdy elements that drink in the hotel bar, guests do not need to worry about their car etc being vandalised whilst in the hotel car park
- Alistair (10/5): - .
- Diane (2/5): Poor room condition ! - We stayed here to attend a family wedding . Unfortunately I did not take any photos of this room . Let me start with no en-suite in room . Then a small sink in room with one small mirror let’s just say glad I didn’t need to style and dry my hair there was a squeezed up to the wardrobe . Window frame all rotten it’s wedge open does not close .
Radiator loose hanging off wall . Ripped wallpaper . Desperate in need of modernisation.
Nice Bar friendly staff. Rooms should be closed until re burnished .
- Peter (4/5): You can easily find somewhere better - This was a terrible weekend. The bedroom was very down at heal. The shower was dirty and in need of serious maintenance. Window could only stay open by wedging a book ( bible!) In the gap. No restaurant service and a poor breakfast. Then to top it all we didn't get a refund as we only stopped 2 nights instead of 3. Not even any response from the hotel to Hotels.com who we booked through or direct email from us.
- Thomas (8/5): - an interesting building with a rich history overlooking a beautiful old bridge very conveniently located to visit the roman wall and forts. The new owners Jim and Susan who are upgrading the building are most hospitable, welcoming, friendly and helpful.
- Paris (6/5): - Stopped here for one night on our travels, staff were dressed in a “zombie apocalypse” theme so was really random when we arrived 😂
Super lovely staff though, room was okay but was a bed for the night. Breakfast was alright.
- Colin (10/5): Nice stay , look forward to returning - Owner had only just taken over days before our visit so some things were a bit unorganised .
However overall it was a good stay , loved the location and area.Room was ok , could do with an upgrade but fine for the price.
Breakfast was good , lots of choice.
- Kay (2/5): Disappointed - Very disappointing stay. Very tired needs lots of things doing to it to bring it up to a standard. Bed squeaked if you moved, bathroom door hit the toilet seat when you opened it, shower door broken, paper cups for your tea/coffee, paper plate for your toast.cob webs over the windows. Would not return.
- Claire (10/5): - Stunning location, comfy room, friendly staff, good breakfast. Will stay again.
- L (10/5): - The staff were fantastic. The room was clean and spacious . The location is spectacular and the Anchor hotel is a very highly recommended place to stay. I will happily stay here again.
- James (8/5): - Very pleasant staff. Great breakfast. No dinner, although advertised. Overall a good stay.
Although shower lacked good water pressure. Landlord was friendly.
- Ioan (10/5): - Smashing breakfast and very welcoming staff. Terrific 👍
- Stephen (10/5): Anchor Hotel stay. - Great stay - staff where very polite and couldn’t do any more. Breakfast was great and value for money amazing.
- Kevin (6/5): Friendly and welcoming. - The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
The linen and towels beautifully white.
Bed could do with upgrade and carpet.
Bit disappointing evening meals were not available.
Hotel on the whole has character and with a bit of tlc could be a goldmine.
- Francis (6/5): Hadrian's Wall trip - Comfortable bed. No heating on so room was quite cold in the morning. Excellent breakfast. Good service.
- Jeffrey (10/5): - When travelling by train be sure to get off at Haydon Bridge not Hexham, like we did. The hotel really needs some TLC. What made it a pleasant stay was the staff and the breakfasts they were excellent.
- David (6/5): 3 day stay - Hotel entrance smelled of stale cigarettes as the cigarette bin was immediately outside the front door. A bit disappointing. Hotel was a bit tired. Chose this hotel as it stated food available, but dining was closed except for breakfast. ( and had been for a while) As this was the Queens funeral weekend it caused us problems as most other venues were closed on the Sunday night and bank holiday. Breakfast was good and professionally presented. Our room was clean with tea and coffee facilities refilled daily and extra on request. However bed was not made up during the day.
Overall staff friendly and everywhere was clean.
- John (10/5): Friendly - Very good, cheap, friendly hotel. Will definitely book again if im up that way. Great location if touring on a motorbike with off street parking
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Badly in need of some improvements fir comfort in the bar area
- Iris (8/5): - We chose this hotel for its location i.e. proximity to Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda, Roman Army Museum, etc. and this was perfect. Just off the A69 and only a few miles from Corbridge and Hexham. It is also only about 40 minutes from Beamish Living Museum - which is well worth a visit. Has easy parking and lovely outside area where you can sit and have a drink if weather is good (which it was for us!). Staff extremely helpful, welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much bother. Breakfast was excellent - piping hot and good selection made to order. Only slight disappointment is that they are currently not serving evening meals. This wasn't intimated on the booking confirmation or website and caused a bit of a problem for us on arrival as most of the local eateries were closed on a Monday. The local chippy directly across from the hotel, however, is fabulous. Their freshly made pizzas would do many a pizzeria credit and a bargain at £7 for a 12 inch mushroom pizza. Would highly recommend! Staff at the Anchor were happy to set up a table in the restaurant for us. Room was spacious, comfortable and clean. (Would also recommend 'The General Havelock' restaurant just across the bridge and turn left. Had a fabulous meal there (steak and all the trimmings) at a reasonable price). Room was spacious, comfortable and clean. Hotel itself is a little tired but can't fault the service we received during our stay. Slept like a log each night. Good value for the money we paid.
- Harvey (8/5): - Happy with my stay
- John (8/5): - Shower was to small to get in and out of.
- Mary (6/5): - Dark room. Tired decor. Friendly, helpful staff.
- Brian (10/5): - Very nice pub near Hadrians Wall. Easy check in and easy parking. Arrived on a Sunday so dining options were limited. This pub didn’t serve dinner. But had drinks on their outside patio over looking the River Tyne. Very nice. Went to the only local restaurant which was open on s Sunday. It was interesting but a very limited menu and extremely small portion size. Luckily there was a fish and chips takeaway right across the street that had a larger menu and was very good. All in all a very nice stay.
- Anne E (8/5): - Staff were so friendly without being intrusive...chef Paul...custom made breakfasts. Loved the fresh flowers on each table. Any wee problem sorted out immediately.
A friendly, efficiently run place. Enjoyed my stay
- Kim (8/5): - Great little hotel. Room was a good size. Too cold though and a lot of spiders but I hate spiders lol staff are amazingly helpful! Patrons in the pub were so nice and knowledgeable of the area. The only bad part were the stairs for a senior aren’t the best.
- Simon (8/5): - Nice location next to the river. Good facilities nearby. Good value.
- gordon (10/5): - Historical, comfortable and quirky! Lived up to expectations and we left feeling totally relaxed.
- Peter (6/5): - .
- Carol (10/5): - Had a lovely 2 night stay here, staff were very friendly, breakfast was excellent, good value for money
- Julia (8/5): - My daughter and I received a warm welcome on arrival. The room was fine, al
- Michael (10/5): Anchor - Stay was great and staff were very nice and welcoming.
- Darius (8/5): - A charming and characterful property with very helpful staff and an excellent breakfast we had too, comfortable bedroom in excellent decorative order, the shower was perfect and the warm in the bedroom was very cosy but you can turn the heat down or up as you wish, had a great view from the bedroom and there are some fantastic places to eat very close to the hotel, I would highly recommend anyone staying there and I'll likely be back again someday soon all being well enough with this ongoing pandemic ! The only thing is that could be improved is a bit more attention to be payed to the high and low dustimg buts its only a minor issue as everything else was really great 👍 was a fast check in service also !
Overall, a very pleasant time spent there !
- George kieran (8/5): Great sausages - Lovely welcome fantastic breakfast
- Verified traveler (8/5): Would definitely go again - Haydon bridge is a beautiful place and if like us you want to do lots of walking and siteseeing of Roman forts and Hadrian’s wall , this is a great place to visit . The anchor Hotel was a lovely welcoming pub with excellent staff that helped with everything that we needed . Breakfast was really good and staff again exceeded expectations. The room needed a little TLC but for the price it was fair . Overall brilliant trip .
- Tim (8/5): - Nice hotel but no food in evening.
- Richard (10/5): - A great location for visiting the historic sights along Hadrians wall and only a 30 minute drive into Newcastle.
- R Imperato (8/5): - Really friendly staff only downside was the Resturant was not open so had to look elsewhere for evening food.
- david (8/5): - Stayed a couple of nights. Nice location, easy parking right outside, friendly staff, adequate room and excellent breakfast.
The main problem was that, due to no staff, the restaurant was closed. With two young children, the only option we had was to dine in the room after getting cold food from the local Co-Op. That was very disappointing and blighted an otherwise enjoyable stay.
- samuel (10/5): - This is an lovely hotel right on the river with an old bridge next to it. Plenty of parking. They weren't making lunch or dinner due to no cook for those times but there's a rather popular take out restaurant across the street. Shower is a bit tight for us bigger people but all in all a very nice place.
- Iain (8/5): Anchor Hotel - Nice, very popular local hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. Perfect for our one night stay.
- Henry (4/5): - Room was ok, breakfast good but tables too small. Restaurant closed.
- Mark (8/5): - The first couple of days in the bar was ok, got a bit chaos on the last night a bloke doing tiple of tales where people was sitting not thinking if the safety of others apart from that everything was ok.
