Guest Reviews
- Kelvyn (8/5): - Such a warm friendly welcome at this great find. Food, service and pub vibe was exceptional. Rooms was spacious and clean and well presented but do need updating, but as I understand it this pub changed hand 6 months ago and I would also prioritise the pub!!.
This was a great pet friendly find in a lovely hidden village.
- Richard (10/5): - Very friendly staff and helpful.
- Kelly (10/5): Enjoyable stay in a great place - We really enjoyed our stay here. Very comfy rooms in an extremely peaceful location.
Our host was very friendly and courteous throughout and showed a genuine interest in helping us have an enjoyable weekend.
- Peter (10/5): Great - Awesome food, excellent atmosphere. The rooms are little bit dated but overall I would 100% come back to stay…
- Tracey (10/5): - Recently got new owners and being renovated. Friendly staff and good food choices.
- Dawn (10/5): Ideal - Lovely pub with great food. Nice quiet area.
- DEREK (6/5): - Three night business stop over .
Didn’t eat or drink in the pub area so have no view of this area .
Room , tired .
3/10
- Peter (10/5): Lovely lively pub. - Lovely lively pub in the countryside of Wales, beautiful area. Lush. Bedroom was clean and well presented. Full amenities. Relaxed atmosphere. Great food. Very attentive host. Brilliant service.
- Andrew (10/5): Great value short trip - A short-stay business trip, but what a treasure to find!
Friendly, clean, tidy, with a good selection of beers and something on the menu to suit any taste.
Everything laid out next day for an early (06:30) breakfast getaway.
- Gemma (2/5): Bed bugs and cobwebs - There were huge bed bugs and cobwebs everywhere. I ended up sleeping in my car. The manager was amazing and stated he only bought property a couple of months ago. I did get a full refund, which was expected as I had to sleep in my car. I sent a video to the owner, which he was shocked as cleaners went in the day before. If that was the case you NEED to sack the cleaners. When I collected my things the next morning, I saw the cleaners who were very rude to me.
- Georgina (10/5): Excellent :) - My partner and I had a wonderful stay at The Fox and Hounds. A little haven just up the road from the bustle of Cardiff where we had a brilliant night seeing the Stereophonics. Adam and all staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and attentive, very friendly locals and a brilliant taxi firm recommended who chauffeured us to and from the gig. An absolutely lovely little break away and we are looking forward to returning, concert or not.
- Joanne (10/5): Beautiful rural place - Really helpful and pleasant staff, pub was beautiful and the room was really nice
- Julian (10/5): - A very nice hotel, very relaxed atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff.
- Ryan (2/5): - We have just returned home from an overnight stay at your place and have to say we were extremely disappointed. The room its self didn’t feel very clean and smelt of curry or something similar. The door was was extremely sticky and had to be almost forced to get both in and out of the room. We stayed in room number 3. The pictures on Expedia are extremely misleading because the room that I booked looked nothing like the pictures displayed online. There was mould around the bath, the toilet was slanted and felt like you were sliding off of it when you sat down and the cistern at the back of the toilet seemed to be coming away from the wall and there were missing tiles too. We wanted to shower but couldn’t shower as there was no hot water which is absolutely disgusting and there isn’t anyone on site to raise the issues with. We got up and left early because we just couldn’t wait to get away from the place. All in all we would definitely never return and would not recommend the accommodation to friends or family.
- Mike (6/5): Barry Island Break - Located in a picturesque countryside village, the pub is welcoming and staff/locals are friendly.
No evening food service on the night of our stay so we had to venture to find food. Not ideal after a lengthy drive but nothing in the village.
Rooms are basic and a bit tired but generally clean. The shower however is only suitable for persons under 6ft (room 6)due to the shower tray position.
We had rowdy neighbours who continued until 2am despite requests to turn the volume down, unable to locate any staff to assist with matter which didn't help.
Didn't stay for breakfast so cannot comment on that. A shame really because given its location.
- Dawn (10/5): - New owner, is turning the business around, couldn’t fault the ambience, service and overall attitude of the staff and owner, the decor is a little tired but given time this will improve with the ambition of the owner. Recommended
- A P (10/5): - We had a great stay at the Fox & Hounds. The staff were great and the service fantastic. Would definitely stay again
- Melita (8/5): Warm, welcoming stay - The landlord has just taken over the property but was incredibly accommodating and friendly. The building is a lovely old inn with all the quirks that come with that and bags of character. WiFi is an issue in the rooms due to the thickness of the walls but it is present downstairs.
- Alexandra (10/5): Welcoming and friendly atmosphere! - Very accommodating and friendly staff, we had a one night stay and the room was very cozy & comfortable. The pub has a very good welcoming atmosphere and nothing was too much trouble.
- Nicholas (10/5): - Lovely peaceful location, friendly staff and locals. Dog friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
- Richard (10/5): - Having visited some time before, this is situated by a stunning church and quite villiage and warranted another visit due to a family party nearby. Has been taken over recently and things are going in the right direction as was looking a little tired. Food is great, as are the staff and sence a a great villiage pub
- Daniel (6/5): - Bathroom was not clean
- Julie (2/5): Needs Attention - The room needs attention the bathroom needs replacing. Only half the lights worked in the room. The two halves of the bed were not secured. The water from the basin tap was hardly going into the sink. There was no heating or hot water.
- Francis (8/5): - The shower with doors that were difficult to close
The dinner was excellent good food well cooked and presented
- Peter (10/5): Good nights stay - Lovely little inn situated out in the wilds.
Just right for a peaceful nights say.
- PAUL (10/5): - Locals very welcoming staff very accommodating area lovely nice quiet very rural room very clean and had everything you needed lovely church to view net to it and some nice places to walk
- G (10/5): Family Catch - Stopped here for one night to see family in the local area and watch rugby match. Rooms nice, comfortable, various sizes and all double rooms. All en-suite bathrooms with baths in some with shower over and the smaller rooms with wall in shower only. Great variety of tea types in each room and fresh milk in flask provided. Food and drinks charged to room to pay at the end of the evening.
Evening meal was lovely and great portion sizes. Price reflected the quality and very much worth it.
Would stay again
- Neil (10/5): Fox & Hounds - First class all round. Great location with excellent food and beers in the Fox n Hounds. Good value and recommended.
- Martin (10/5): Loved it! - We had a lovely time. Staff were really friendly, food was amazing and the rooms were very clean and comfortable.
- Robert (10/5): Village pub and resturant - Great location in the outskirts of Barry and Cardiff
- Clare (4/5): dog-friendly but overpriced and in need of refurb. - The room was small, the ensuite was tiny, and the bed very small and bouncy (I think likely a queen size, not a double). This, in combination with noise from people coming up the stairs, doors banging, and some sort of weird vibrating noise (?fan/generator) early next morning meant hardly any sleep the first night. It felt in need of a refurbishment, everything quite worn and tired looking.
There was no little extra's-complementary biscuits or shower gel, and the TV didn't work.
On the positive side the staff were friendly and they allow dogs.
The food was ok-good, but a little overpriced.
Overall the stay was overpriced for what is being offered,I wouldn't return.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly, good food, nice atmosphere. Room quality varies.
- James (8/5): Pleasing stay - Nice little hotel, comfortable rooms, nice bar and restaurant. Only down side was the slow Wi-fi.
Was travelling for work and struggled slightly with the Wi-fi speed on my laptop.
All in all very good 😁
- Verified traveler (10/5): Comfortable place to stay - Warm welcome and great food, the music played loudly by staff after the bar closed late at night wasn’t great but the food and value for money is always appreciated
- Hellen (10/5): Wonderful stay - Great pub in a lovely village. We stayed one night and enjoyed drinks and an evening meal. Great breakfast this morning too.
- Stuart (10/5): Just like home - Such a homely place, beautiful little village - beats a chain hotel hands down.
- Chris (10/5): Beautiful unique location - Beautiful quiet location in a brilliant venue that is cosy and homely.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely location. Great food and fantastic staff - especially the staff who served dinner and breakfast. Bedroom was a decent size although showing signs of wear and tear. Bathroom was a little small and awkward especially shower - shower pressure was excellent!
- Kathy (4/5): - The proprietors had a snappy/ condescending attitude. Rooms very small and horribly uncomfortable beds, lacking amenities. Menu of " daily specials " stayed the same for all 6 days we stayed. Very boring. Breakfast included, but it was demanded to schedule a time to eat and pre choose meal. Eggs tried 3 days and all 3 were like rubber. Seems to cater to dogs...other guests with 3 large dogs in room and roaming all about. Would not recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved the semi-covered beer garden with night time heating, it was so calm and peaceful next to a stream.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a lovely hotel with an oldie worldie feel. The staff are really friendly and the breakfasts were brilliant. The rooms are really big but need refreshed, which the owners are going to do over the next year. You will certainly not be cold, the bedrooms are roasting and the fan in the room was really useful. Lovely toiletries were supplied in the en-suite. We will certainly stay here again, close enough for CardIff to travel in by car but lovely and quiet and pretty area to stay. My advice would be to put in Fox and Hounds into your sat nav or hotels in the area rather than the post code as it can be hard to find. Congratulations and good luck to the new owners, keep the good work up, you have a really good business. We hope to see you again soon.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely area, friendly staff, amazing food and cosy room, would definitely stay again
- Dennis (10/5): - Joanna who welcomed us and checked us in was very nice, helpful and a pleasure to deal with. For dinner we both went for the burger fresh pattie from local farm. This may have been the best burger I have ever had, it was outstanding. Breakfast was very good too. The entire pub and restaurant areas were clean with a friendly atmosphere. The accommodations were comfortable and clean. Very enjoyable stay, would recommend the Fox and Hounds to anyone!
- Stephen (8/5): Very nice country hotel - Very nice, friendly staff. Clean pleasant room and nice breakfast. We would certainly stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the village setting.Very friendly staff. Narrow roads to get to it but worth it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Fox & Hounds in vey clean. The staff friendly and the food delicious. We were made very welcome and enjoyed our stay. The only thing I would mention (and this by no way is a minus to the 11 out of 10 score we'd give) is that on asking, I found there is a vegetarian breakfast option which isn't shown on the breakfast menu, so non meat eaters are given the same great kick start to the day :-)
- Stephen (6/5): - Great location friendly staff. Food ok. Breakfast was not great. Coffee stewed couldn’t drink it. I would go again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good ambiance but I don’t want to add a minimum of 50 characters
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Delightful staff, great accommodations and superb restaurant! We highly recommend it! But...be precise with GPS...our maps program first sent us to a pub about half an hour from our actual destination.
- David (8/5): Nice quiet hotel with great food & service. - Room was a bit dated but clean, food was fantastic and service great. Nice quiet location.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the quiet location. Dogs are very welcome. Food was delicious.
- john (10/5): Excellent food - Excellent find , great gastro food , very friendly staff , clean and safe
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Impeccable, yet comfortable service! Ecellent food and the location is very unique and special.
- Samantha (10/5): - This was the highlight of our trip. The inn is picture perfect and the staff amazingly friendly and helpful. We attended an Octiberfest night while there and enjoyed it immensely. The village is quaint and the historic church next door worth a viewing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely B&B - Lovely little b&b in a cute village! The room was clean and nice- with a comfy bed.
The breakfast was absolutely delicious with good quality local produce. Would definitely go back if I needed to stay in the area again.
- Christopher (10/5): Going back - A perfect place to stay. Great food, location and the staff were outstanding.
Definitely going back.
- Alan & Karen (10/5): A jewel of a hotel/inn just off the beaten track - A fantastic two night stay. The staff couldn't do enough for us even down to a complimentary bottle of prosecco to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. The food is amazing. It was difficult to believe that the management team had only been in place for just 1 week. Well done all.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent in every way. Looked after our bike overnight and rang us after we left as we had forgotten an item in room. Food is outstanding and well priced, restaurant service immaculate. A highly efficient and caring establishment. Would stay again and recommend to all. Nice draught beer too!
- Michelle (8/5): Lovely - Poor Wifi - Very warm welcome, home from home feel. Only issue was the WiFi.. wasn't ample for business trip and no phone signal. If you want to get away from it all, this is the perfect place. Thank you.
- Emily (10/5): Incredible value - lovely locals to chat to in the evening, fantastic bar staff, incredibly comfortable beds and delicious breakfast. All at a very reasonable rate. I'll be back!
- Malcolm (10/5): A Bit of Home from Home ( with better food ) - Comfortable room, excellent food, plenty of parking, very quiet location and a very personal service, would highly recommend ,thanks for the breakfast sandwiches to take away Sue.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely location. - Pleasant atmosphere, staff very helpful, treated with respect and care
- Ruthie (10/5): Idyllic location, great food and drink - Have stayed here twice within the space of a few weeks. A real find. A traditional inn with low beams (watch out when ascending the stairs to the bedrooms), the best beer I've ever enjoyed, and great food.
- Mark (10/5): A lovely weekend - A fantastic little find and lovely friendly hotel. The food and service matched the hotel
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent Value Inn - We spent one night at the inn and were very impressed by the room, the amenities, the staff and the food. The dinner was excellent in terms of range of dishes offered, quality of food and the value for money. Breakfast, which was included in the room rate, was also good value using local produce. The inn is located in a small village, which was picturesque and quiet. The rooms were large, comfortably furnished with good bathroom facilities. We are already planning a return as we enjoyed the area and the inn is close enough to Cardiff to be able to take advantage of the places of interest in the city while enjoying the tranquility and hospitality of the inn.
- David (8/5): Hidden Gem - Only stopped for one night on business, a very nice property and friendly people in a beutiful village location
- Helen (8/5): Nice place in the middle of nowhere. - Nice room, good food, good beer. No 'phone signal at all and poor (mostly unusable) wifi in room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Would Stay again - About 20 minutes from Cardiff. Good food. Tight stairs.
- John (10/5): Stay more than one night. - Difficult to find. Probably due to Garmin technology. Happened to ask a local. Good advice and followed him. Able to negotiate dangerous intersection where hedges need to be trimmed. Can imagine potential deaths here. All good in the finish as hosts were absolutely wonderful. Still experiencing trauma due to that intersection. Garmin could have ending our excistance. Trust your own best judgement.
- Verified traveler (8/5): lovely hotel, location difficult. - We were made to feel most welcome, room and breakfast were great. We had great difficulty finding the hotel and found the extremely narrow, curvy and high hedged roads totally daunting.
- Suzanne (10/5): Lovely guesthouse, off the beaten track - This guesthouse is 25 mins drive from Cardiff and is in a beautiful setting. Our bedroom was immaculate, very comfortable, with a wonderful bed. The en-suite was small but perfectly adequate. The breakfast was absolutely superb - cooked to order and totally delicious with nothing but the best of ingredients used. All the staff were extremely pleasant apart from one older lady who served breakfast to us. For some reason, which we do not understand, she was brusque and officious with us and never told us what was on the menu to choose or even offered us a menu. She was completely unfriendly towards us (though was very personable with other guests staying). We have no idea what this was about, but it spoiled for us what had otherwise been a lovely overnight stay.
