Guest Reviews

- Jane (5/5): Despite its great location I doubt I’ll be staying again. - I chose the Star for its location as it was a short walk to my friend whom I was visiting and stayed for 2 nights The room was very basic, really needs upgrading, there wasn’t a chair in the room, and no glass in the bathroom.
The bed was so uncomfortable that I had to ask my friend to lend me a mattress topper so I could get some sleep on my second night.
The staff are lovely and very helpful not their fault the room wasn’t good.
- Zachary (10/5): Perfect spot for what I needed - would stay there again. - It's an excellent little inn that was a perfect space to get away to the English countryside. No complaints, really - great staff, cozy rooms.
- stephen (8/5): Really pleasant - Was pleasant environment and helpful staff. Nothing
- Leigh (7/5): - Bed was comfortable enough
- Imogen (5/5): - Great location. Lovely food Bed is very small for size of room.
Very noisy with no double glazing
- Connie (8/5): - Excellent location for the racecourse, staff friendly and food excellent
- Benjamin (9/5): - The star is in a wonderful location, with very clean and spacious rooms and a lovely local public house in general. Breakfast were phenomenal and they catered for everyone. We arrived on Friday night of the last bank holiday weekend and it was busy in the pub. We had to wait 20+mins standing at the bar in order to check in with several bar staff ignoring our requests to check in or finding someone who could. I understand this time was a very busy period but to have to wait for so long was a disappointing start but the rest of the stay did make up for this

- Annemaria (10/5): We zijn maar 1 nachtje gebleven maar alles beviel goed. Zeker ook het echte Engelse ontbijt! - De typische Engelse sfeer die de accommodatie met zich meedraagt en de gezellige bar.
- laura (8/5): -
- Nigel (8/5): - It has a good atmosphere, the bar and tables were kept clean and the food was great. The rooms and the rest of the premises were kept clean and tidy. Having to register the car number plate morning and evening. A sign telling guests where to check in would be helpful. The water pressure in the shower was very poor making it difficult to wash soap of our bodies.
- Nina (7/5): Not as good as last time we stayed - Nice food & friendly staff.
Clean! Very uncomfortable mattress & bed was a very small double!! Neither me or my husband slept properly.
Also duvet was too hot but had no extra sheets to use instead. We opened the window then got people standing outside chatting at 5 am in the morning!
This was the second time we have stayed here & it was very comfortable last time so we were very dissapointed this time.
- Adrian (9/5): We look forward to staying with you again. Great value for money. - Service was very good. Breakfast was very good.
- Helen (9/5): Great value overnight stay - Good overnight pub stay, quiet room, pub meal/ bar available . Very convenient Bathroom a bit tired
- Chris (8/5): Very good stay with lovely staff and good food. - I don't like a shower over the bath as I am slightly disabled. The shower was fairly weak. Next time I will ask for a walk-in shower.
- Stuart (10/5): -
- Patrick (1/5): Will not stay again and won’t recommend as feel they take your money then absolve all responsibility. - As usual convenient and clean but staff seemed even more stretched than usual. We have stayed several times but this time there were bonfires in the back garden so rooms really smelt of smoke. Not sure that should have been allowed with guests staying. Then load reggae music for some time in the early hours of the morning. So loud we couldn’t sleep no one to complain to.
- Hans-Thomas (5/5): -
- Philip (7/5): -
- Steven (9/5): - Loved it. Everything you need on the premises and shops/takeaways short walk away. Will return when next local. Nothing
- Justin (7/5): As a frequent visitor for the horse racing it’s always an enjoyable stay, and friendly staff - Breakfast is spot on and the location for the horse racing is superb The room we stayed in was a little date and the shower wasn’t very good
- Christian (8/5): -
- DawnDawn61 (7/5): - Lovely staff on arrival. Comfy room and we had a lovely meal in the restaurant. We decided to eat from the set menu and it was superb. Having been assured we could get breakfast (we only wanted some toast) until 10am... 9.40am told by z surly unhelpful woman "no preparing for lunch". Suggest the team work together either information.

- paul (8/5): great pub for food and a very comfortable bed. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. - excellent breakfast cooked from scratch bit manic when I arrived as it is a very popular pub on a sunny day but in the evening after 11 it was very peaceful so no problems sleeping at all
- Tom (9/5): - Quality establishment
- Liv (10/5): comfortable, cosy, great value for money and friendly. - breakfast was great value for money, don't know much about the location. the room was big and ben very comfy nothing

- Elaine (7/5): Overall a good stay, just a housekeeping issue that was worked around. - Handy location, clean rooms/ facilities. Friendly staff good food reasonably priced. Rooms weren’t ready on arrival, family room the children’s beds weren’t made up. Booked two doubles for two nights. One room wasn’t ready and had to use a twin on first night and change rooms so not what we had booked and paid for.
- Lorna (3/5): Dissappointing - The pub was lovely but service slow Accomodation was tired
Cravk in the sink
Grouting in the shower missing
Very dusty bed head and chest of drawers
Was not worth £110
- Gillian (8/5): No breakfast included for our £90 a night!!! - Everything you needed was supplied and clean. Comfortable twin beds. Small room and very small shower/toilet area.
- Alan (10/5): - Lovely friendly inn - great food and lovely staff
- Joanne (8/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): Excellent, good food and good value too. -
- John (10/5): Perfect - Good service and atmosphere Nothing
- Lottie (10/5): Hostesses with mostesses! - Lovely country pub with B&B facilities. Our room was clean, fresh & the bathroom was bigger than ours! 🤣 The staff were exceptionally friendly, & nothing was too much trouble. We will be visiting again this year, maybe for a couple of days this time 😊

- tony (9/5): 2 nights at the Starr inn - 10 min walk from the station, 15 mins from the racecourse, 10 mins from Lingfield centre. rooms are adequate and warm ( we stayed in Jan for 2 nights), and breakfast was very nice & tasty . The only thing was the very small toaster
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Helen (7/5): Great Place if Only For a Short Visit - It was located conveniently close to East Grinstead when travelling by car and was off the beaten track with a lovely village just round the corner from where I stayed. I also liked the fact that the accommodation was separately built next to the pub and not having to go to rooms upstairs in the pub. This helps because if the pub has an event on, it can keep one awake until 12am! The cooked breakfast was exceptional and fills you up completely. I couldn't eat everything on my plate, I was just too full to eat the rest after only eating the eggs and sausage, I had to leave the mushrooms. Although there is overhead noise from the airplanes heading into Gatwick Airport, airplanes don't operate after 11pm and then start again around 6am so something to be aware of. Although the bed was comfortable, I wish their was a lighter cover than the quilt as I found myself continuously waking up in the night throwing the quilt off and then pulling it back on when I was cold!
- Susan (10/5): A pleasant, comfortable room and a lovely breakfast. - Book in was a Friday night just after 9.0pm. The check in was quick and easy with a helpful member of staff even though the pub was busy. The room was quiet. The breakfast was just what we needed with a choice of cereals, juices, bread for toast and a varied choice for the cooked part. The breakfast was good value at £13.00 and appeared very quickly especially as it was cooked on demand.
The room was clean and functional.
- denise (7/5): Lovely pub, great food. Rooms slightly dated. Stay was comfortable, and we were made welcome. - The pub itself is fabulous.
Food was excellent.
Staff courteous. I didn't realise the pub is directly under flight path for the airport. A little disturbing when it was time to sleep!
Room is a little dated which isn't a problem, however, there were some parts that were not as clean as you would expect. I did point this out to a member of staff so it could be rectified for future guests. Staff member was very apologetic and advised they would ensure room was thoroughly cleaned that morning.

- Louise (9/5): Brilliant - Very good Excellent
- Juan Carlos (9/5): -
- Sheila (7/5): Staff friendly food very good - Bar area was welcoming and staff helpful
Great breakfast 10/10 ! Basic room beds were comfy &clean aircraft noise but we where near Gatwick
- Karen (7/5): - nice and local for everything the pub was nice and clean and the rooms to
- Leah (8/5): Would visit again - Lovely service and excellent food. Room was great apart from the thin walls, the guy in the next room was snoring very loudly! Great location for Hever Castle. Bathroom was the only let down. It was very dated and generally not great.
- Julie (1/5): Will not be using booking.com again - We arrived and they had no knowledge of our booking
- John (8/5): - The pub, food and staff are excellent. Couldn't fault it. Lovely breakfast, one of the mornings before going to the horse racing. Made a mistake of booking an outside room which is very basic, but clean and comfortable. Delivery men arrived very early and woke us both up. But that was a minor inconvenience as we really enjoyed our stay.
- Alan (10/5): - Lovely big room - lovely staff and perfect location
- Terence (10/5): Excellent value for money, great accommodation, great food, great service. - This country pub/hotel was a brilliant location for our destination - within a short walk to Lingfield Racecourse. [LGW is also a short drive away]. Very comfortable twin bedded room with en-suite facilities. We had Room 7 and were very pleased with the large well appointed room, large radiator ( it was very cold outside but not inside) and all the fixtures fittings.
The food was excellent, the dining room was very good and the food was great. The breakfast (which was an extra £13 pp) was excellent value for the money; freshly cooked full English and cereals, toast tea and beverages. Evening/lunch food was excellent value for money too, with a wide selection of options to suit everyone’s preferences. A young vibrant team were very attentive and looked after us very well. A well done shout out to all the serving members, in particular to Faith and Yassin , for looking after us so well, . As our stay was over the New Year period the pub, the bar and the dining areas were very busy, but the reservations for our group of 4 Adults meant we didn’t have to wait long for all the services we required.
We will be back ! Having read some negative reviews we thought there would be some disappointments and dissatisfaction. However, we found nothing to complain about.
The car registration policy was clearly marked in the car park, on the entrance doors, at check in and in the bedroom. So no excuses for not registering your vehicle.
The weather, being under a flight path to LGW or the like are not under the control of the establishment.
Some aircraft noise could be heard at times but not enough to spoil the experience.

- MarkJClayton (9/5): - It is a lovely village pub and was particularly enchanting with lots of lights for Christmas. The room was also excellent. The bathroom was a little dated, if massive. It wasn't in keeping with the excellent and homely bedroom.
- Sarah (3/5): Not worth the money - Room small. Broken cracked sink. Banged bed each time went in bathroom
- Paul (1/5): Very disappointed - We didn’t stay for breakfast The bathroom was mouldy around the window and the radiator didn’t work, the kitchen was right below and the extractor fans were so loud,I have recorded it. It was the flight path for Gatwick airport so we had plains landing all night and with no double glazing it was so loud.my partner couldn’t do her hair in the morning as the mirror was away from the dressing table and had no plug socket.it was so bad we drove three hours home in the morning for a shower and a sleep.

- Melanie (8/5): - staff, location, room and atmosphere had three rooms, one room too hot with humming noise ? from extractor
- Tracy (7/5): Comfortable - Lovely old property in beautiful part of the village Nothing it was fine
- JIM (8/5): All in all very good. - Lovely Breakfast , very good ingredients . Had a meal , also first class . Brilliant for our trip to Lingfield racecourse . The room was pretty good , with a few little improvements it could be cracking . For the price as I said it was very good.
- Teunis (8/5): aangenaam gezellig en toch privee - gezelligheid en toch privacy kleine badkamer
- Wing Heng (10/5): -
- David (8/5): Good overnight stay for Lingfiel racecourse - The Inn is ideally located for Lingfield racecourse . The staff and property were very welcoming and the place inside and out was beautifully decorated for Christmas . All breakfast items were of a good quality and quantity and lovely to be served rather than buffet style. Would stay again We chose to have an evening meal and even though the food appeared to be good the service wasn't. We may have been unlucky but one meal came almost 15mins before the other three. Not good when you want to eat together. The reason given was that there were two kitchens. It was pointed out that this was on the menu. The printing was very small and so it should have been pointed out while taking the order however it also said they would do their best to coordinate the 2 kitchens.. The first meal was redone but then the other 3 meals came 10 mins before the first one. All we asked was coordination in the kitchens , cook meals at the same time and bring 4 meals together. They eventually offered to start again but by this time our appetites had disappeared and we left very disappointed with the restaurant.
- Christina (10/5): Very enjoyable stay and will be returning - Very lovely and helpful staff. Excellent food. Nothing was too much the staff were very accommodating. - Peter (6/5): All in all it was alright - I didn't like the fact of having to walk through the pub , I didn't like our door constantly rattling as it was very noisy & awoke us at 5am 😒
