- Kate (10/5): Magnificent all round - Stunning location and views, wonderful host, very clean and relaxing accommodation.
- Chalotte (8/5): Very good -
- Rika (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wahine (10/5): Just beautiful!! - Stunning views, clean! Light and airy, the well stocked fridge and pantry for our arrival, so thoughtful! A beautiful peaceful property. I hope to be back sometime.
- Frederick (10/5): Exceptional - Magnificently appointed. Great internal space and comfort. Fabulous gardens and decks for BBQ and relaxation. Magnificent views and exceptional welcome from the hosts
- Simon (10/5): - Peter is a very nice people, and the room is quite clean!
- Lukas (6/5): Pleasant -
- Michael (10/5): Wow! Fond memories. - Wow. Amazing apartment with lovely views captured by nearly all windows in the apartment. Nothing of importance. TV signal didn’t work but the host, Peter, organised a technician to visit on a Sunday to try and sort it out.
- Allan (9/5): Fantastic off-beaten-path guest house with great views. - The rooms and view are fantastic.
Location is lovely and far enough off the beaten track to feel separated and quiet. Opua is much quieter than Paihia and is a 20 min walk. Paihia is a lovely 90 min walk (but do avoid high tide for the last 2km into Paihia unless you’re happy to paddle!). We intentionally didn’t have a hire car and it suited us perfectly. In very hot weather the lack of air conditioning makes it necessary to have everything open.
- Kevin (4/5): Disappointing -
- Bruce (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Waimaria (9/5): The location is beautiful but we didn’t enjoy the owner coming in to our space unannounced for no reason (6 times) sneak - the property was set in an idyllic location. You couldn’t fault the location and even on a rainy day the view were exceptional There was no privacy. We didn’t like being interrupted by the owner throughout our stay. It was unnerving. He came into our space no less than 6 times!! for no reason. He never knocked or announced his intention to come into our space, he just turned up. We felt like he was spying on us. He even creeped up the stairs at 9pm in his pyjamas I was on my own in the lounge and got a huge fright to see him standing there in the dark. He didn’t say anything just stood there. I don’t recommend this place.
- Ian (1/5): Bad -
- Alena (9/5): Wonderful - Location was superb, perhaps adding eggs to breakfast menu would be good All good
- Robyn (10/5): - Amazing venue and service, quality in everything.
- Anonymous (3/5): Poor - excellent views Paid a lot of money for a room with a spa bath that didn’t work, it didn’t even have a plug(had to pinch one from the kitchen) breakfast was poor, even when offered a cooked one on our last day we didn’t get it. wifi information in the room was incorrect, found out a day later there is other information in the common living area. Ceiling fan in the room made a terrible noise. The shower head wouldn’t hold up, had to turn it against the wall, otherwise you had to hold it in your hand. Impossible to sleep past 07:00 as you can hear all the other guests banging around. With exception to the view, it was overall a poor experience and falls far short of the luxury accommodation it advertises.
- Jasmine (10/5): - Peter was fantastic, clean and spacious rooms. Food was incredible.
- Frieda (8/5): Very good - The view was astounding.. even in the rain.
The guest area was very comfortable and well equipped.
The towels were huge and fluffy and the bed was so comfortable. The bathroom needs significant updating, and I would expect a cooked breakfast to the per night rate.
It's not great value for money.
Didn't like sharing a large table at breakfast espeically as the other guests had come straight off a cruise ship. Covid is still real, and for those who are still cautious, being that close to others at breakfast isn't great.
Feather pillows were lovely for me, but my sister is asthmatic, so a choice would have been good.
- Kleanthes (9/5): Superb -
- Claire (10/5): Stunning views, great place to stay - We had a fantastic stay. Beautiful rooms with amazing views.
- Hassan Ahmed (10/5): - This is not your average type of accomodation. It’s an experience. Highly recommended.
- Andre (6/5): Pleasant -
- Belinda (10/5): my stay was wonderful a warm and welcoming place. - The view was stunning, the bed super comfortable and the host was very kind. liked everything
- Albee (8/5): Overall ok - Overall it is clean and comfortable. The view was amazing, love it. We thought the kitchen can be used but it was not. However, it did not bother us much anyway. There is a shared lounge, feeling like living in a big house :D
Also Thanks for Peter for preparing us the breakfast :)
- Shannon (10/5): Amazing place to stay, very friendly host, definitely worth the trip north - Secluded, private, warm, and homely. Such a fantastic space with everything you could want. nothing
- Stefi (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was beautiful and clean. Was a wonderful place to stay. Peter was a very lovely host an absolute credit to him.
- Klee (10/5): amazing, lovely host - everything, was stunning! nothing
- Michael (10/5): Excellent! Beautiful property. Owner very nice and welcoming! -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - An amazing property, fully relaxing, the host was great and made sure we had everything we needed. It was sweet serenity,
- Zaid (10/5): - Amazing views and great location. Great hospitality!
- Vivienne (10/5): - We had the most amazing 5 night stay at Cliff Edge by the sea with our host Peter who went above and beyond to make our stay an unforgettable one, he is an exceptionally good cook cooking for us 4 out of the 5 nights and the best breakfasts each morning, cereal, fruits nuts, sweet buns, toast, cheeses and cold cuts and of course coffee or tea. We just loved the lodge, beautifully designed and decorated. We really felt welcomed by Peter and very comfortable. Can absolutely recommend to stay here. You will not be disappointed and we do hope to come back for another stay. Thanks you Peter
- Ollie (10/5): - A beautiful property in a stunning location. If you want to relax and take in the views, this is the place to do it.
- Dennis (8/5): Lovely romantic spot in Bay of Islands - Absolutely stunning views of the Bay of Islands, great romantic getaway spot. Convenient to Opua and the ferry to Russel, as well as Paihia. Peter and Daniel were great hosts. We enjoyed our time there, you will, too!
- Mayank (10/5): Outstanding views with a lovely lounge - The location was a bit off the City center but the view was outstanding, both Peter & Daniel were amazing host, loved the Lounge and Open kitchen ......... breakfast was also truly outstanding with a lot of personal attention....... walk down the hill to an almost secluded seashore in the morning was fun too..would truly recommend for couples or people who are looking out for quality time
- Fiona (10/5): - Excellent stay. Have left details on Tríp Advisor! the
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great old school hospatality, everything was perfect
- Nigel (10/5): - Lovely house on cliff edge with fabulous views over the bay. Peter, the owner cooked lovely meals for for us (and other guests) on two evenings; he is a former owner of restaurants in Australia. He is getting a bit tired - and some of the house furnishings felt the same; he has been there for about 15 years, I believe,
- Verified traveler (8/5): Had to stay an extra night it was that nice! - Location has amazing views, quiet and away from all the hussle of the tourist centered town nearby. Friendly staff, clean and comprehensive accommodations. Direct access to the coastal trail. Unfortunately the dinner option was unavailable two nights in a row but the breakfast was excellent.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A different experience to other places, but a wonderful place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Spectacular views, fantastic location - We were amazed at the spectacular views and idyllic location. The room was very comfortable and the facilities, of having access to the entire house was outstanding. Peter, is a very gentle, humble host who went out of his way to make us, the guests comfortable and totally at home.
His out-of-the-way venue is actually very close to the car ferry to Russell and only a 5 minutes drive away from Paihia. We would love to stay there again, given the opportunity and will tell any friends traveling this way, too!
- Dr Ralf P. (10/5): Beautiful location to enjoy the Bay of Islands - We discovered Cliff Edge as a very welcoming place. Our room had a magnificent and unspoiled view. You can just sit out on your balcony and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. Peter the host and Daniel his assitant are very friendly. The location is ideal to travel the Bay of Islands. The bed was very comfortable . The breakfast was good and we we had a wonderful dinner at " home" in the evening, enjoyed the converastione with the other guests.
we would love to come again. Andrea and Ralf, March 2018
- Verified traveler (8/5): Amazing views. - Very pleasant service, and a fantastic location. The photos on Expedia do not dissapoint and are not over exagertated.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fabulous views, welcoming, feels like a 007 set - Inspirational. The guest lounge (not something we would normally even consider using) is amazing. Just wanted to stay a month!
- teresa (10/5): Idyllic view and fabulous food - Cliff Edge is fantastic. The views alone are breath taking, add to this it's tranquility and you are in heaven! We were fortunate to have two dinners made by our host. Both were gourmet treats and far better than our one dinner our @ a recommended restaurant. The bed was extremely comfortable. In fact, everything was perfect.
- lindley (2/5): Filthy room, objectionable host out of date facili - Room was very dirty, said we did not understand what they were about! Cobwebs everywhere, filthy bathroom filter, spider on the pillow, remains of ants round the skirting board, musty dirty smell when entering the room. Host then added us to leave when we had no where to go. As I had asked for a vacum cleaner to try and clean the place.
- John (6/5): Spiders, Old, and Expensive - If you are paying more than 300 a night you expect: 1) Not to have to kill 8 spiders. 2) Not to have shampoos in reusable bottles. 3) Breakfast included should also be a hot breakfast not toast and Muesli. 4) Not to smell of mold. 5) Not to have the A/C in a separate room. 6) Not to have the ceiling above the toilet so low you bump your head a lot. 6) Have a soap holder in the shower to put your soap/wash cloth. 7) Not to hear the person in the room above you every time they get in and out of the bed.
- Kim (10/5): Bay of Islands - Cliff edge by the Sea - Beautiful panoramic views of the Bay of Islands from this boutique B & B. Even in a thunderstorm the Bay was incredible to watch and experience. Location is prefect between Paihia and ferry to Russell.
Room was charming and well appointed, would recommend the Okiato room with balcony and incredible views.
Peter and staff were very helpful and welcoming. We would recommend this B&B for a nice quiet stay in the North Island's Bay of Islands.
- Nelly (10/5): Views to die for - Absolutely unbeatable location for awesome views, easy reach of eateries etc. large comfortable room which was very clean but had a few cobwebs here and there. Otherwise superb, homely, relaxing retreat.
- Kathy (8/5): Beautiful location - great place to visit for the views but don't count on a hospitable host. He was grumpy and unhelpful, and did not offer what was in the promo eg I was counting on a gourmet dinner but I think those days of cheffing are gone for him. Also, meant to have pre-dinner drinks - these were not offered and he wasn't around so I helped myself. Also stated a fully cooked breakfast ("eggs any way you like") but we did not get this. The spa pool was cold, no explanation or apology offered.
- David/Rose (10/5): Beautiful Cliff Edge - We were served a delicious breakfast by Peter and Daniel every morning. Had a great dinner cooked by Peter - Peter, you haven't lost your culinary skills. It was delicious. Daniel, you are a treasure and such a great help. Good luck in all your ventures.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location with excellent views. Not recommended if you are a light sleeper as it was quite noisy and the vacuuming at 7.30am wasnt appreciated. However overall it was a lovely stay.
- Steve (4/5): A very unpleasant owner of the property. - This is a nice property completely spoilt by the owner who is very unpleasant. Originally he was a restaurant owner in Australia and he clearly struggles in providing hotel accommodation presumably because he thinks it is beneath him. His Assistant was perfectly pleasant and so I suggest the owner hides himself away and leaves it to him. I notice having read previous reports that this has been going on for some time. Some guests no doubt find it quirky and even amusing, I am afraid I did not.
- Marcia (10/5): Stunning views and fabulous stay - Cliff Edge by the sea was a stunning location. We were blown away when we walked in. We felt lucky to have found this gem. We arrived in the afternoon - after a long drive (we landed in NZ/ Auckland and drove straight to the Bay of Islands). Peter greeted us and made suggestions for our afternoon and helped book our next day's activities. We also "booked" dinner for the following night at Cliff Edge and I think it was the best meal/wine we had in NZ. A wonderful stay and beginning to our NZ adventure. ALSO- my husband left his computer cords and Peter mailed it to our next stay right away. We couldn't have asked for more.
- Rick (2/5): This not hotel it is Rude grandfathers house - This is single family house own by old man. I would not go there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very comfortable, beautiful views - We arrived on Friday night after a 3 hr drive from Auckland to be greeted by Peter with a magnificent 3 course dinner. Peter's dinners are an optional extra by arrangement and are highly recommended. We stayed two nights and had a wonderful relaxing time exploring the area. The lounge is huge with magnificent 180 degree views of the Bay. We had good weather and spent the days exploring but in bad weather could have quite happily curled up in the lounge with a book.
- bruce (10/5): - Excellent place to stay. Easy access to places of interest. Great views. Peter provides great service and awesome meals.
- Robin (10/5): Quaint,Charming, Eclectic - Peter is a great host with many years experience in the hospitality industry. He took great care of us and could have done little else to make our stay enjoyable. The Lodge is small but well equipped and a great base to explore the Islands. His dinners are not to be missed.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful place to relax and enjoy the view - Cliff Edge by the Sea was quite a find. We had a wonderful, relaxing stay. It is small, insofar as the number of guests is concerned, and looks out of the Bay of Islands. The meals cooked by Peter are superb (dinner some nights; breakfast every morning). His background as a chef is obvious. The accomodation is very comfortable and private. Walks along the water's edge and through bush into Paihia start just down the hill.
We will be back. We had a wonderful holiday here, a little removed from the hoards of tourists in Paihia.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - An outstanding location with brilliant views and a great host. I would thoroughly recommend a stay for anybody wanting a relaxing holiday. Peter is a fantastic host and I highly recommend you have one of his stunning meals.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great weekend away - Very pleasant say in fantastic surrounds
The evening meal was five star plus
- paul (8/5): Good location with great views - A comfortable atmosphere encourages guests ro mingle in the evening prior to dinner. The food is superb, no qualification.
- wiremu (2/5): Staff is really bad - The hotel itself is nice however a bit far from the beach. The staff is horrible which ruined my trip. The money is unreasonable. Overall it was a terrible experience because of the guy who runs the place. I hated it.
- Ray (8/5): - Value: Reasonable; Service: Inoffensive; Cleanliness: Hygienic ;
difficulty in finding the location
- Michael (8/5): - Facilities: Nice ; Value: Reasonable; Service: Good; Cleanliness: Tidy;
Nice walk to Paihia along the water's edge
- Jaime (10/5): Fabulous place to stay. - The views from this accommodation are spectacular! The food was outstanding. It is not a hotel - there is a kitchen, dining room and living area for guests. Breakfast was a buffet - tea and coffee served. Peter is a wonderful chef and produced the most delicious three course meal. The place is run by one person so services are limited.
It is difficult to describe how amazing the place is - the rooms are tastefully furnished and have balconies with views over the beautiful Bay of Islands. We had a wonderful time in fabulous accommodation.
- J & M (10/5): Great location - For our first visit to New Zealand we knew we wanted to track down Peter Meier who owned a restaurant with accommodation in the Hunter Valley in NSW, Australia. His food was so spectacular that we would drive from Sydney to the Hunter Valley just for lunch at Casuarina. Our stay was great even with the storm which hit this beautiful location. Breakfast and dinner were wonderful with Peter personalising meals.
- Philip (10/5): -
The location is spectacular, and Peter was warm and welcoming. Highly recommended.
- Jodie (10/5): - Facilities: Home away from home; Value: Amazing; Service: Go the extra mile; Cleanliness: Immaculate;
The private walk way to the nearby beach is amazing.
- Rita (8/5): - Facilities: Above average; Value: Pricey; Service: Helpful; Cleanliness: Tidy, Clean;
- lynette (10/5): - Cleanliness: Pleasant;
200 degree view is magnificent
- Stephen (10/5): - Facilities: Distinctive; Value: worth every cent; Service: Go the extra mile; Cleanliness: Spotless;
Nice and secluded, bit tricky to find. GPS helps. Once found, it's a treasure.
- JC (10/5): - Its just perfect, and the best plqce in bay of islands. Peter its great! You MUST stay here!!!
- John (10/5): - Facilities: Home away from home; Value: Amazing; Service: Professional; Cleanliness: Lovely;
Outstanding view the best by far in the Bay of Isles.Wonderful meals by one of the most respected chefs of Australia all to ourselves.
