Guest Reviews
- Edward (6/5): - No wifi. Need reminder of booking direct from property with check in instructions by internet. Not all visitors have cellphone plans.
- Karin J (6/5): - Room was too small for two people. Bathroom too small to take a shower.
- Bonnie (6/5): - Room was ok, woke up in the morning to see 3 people sleeping on the couches in the main dinning/kitchen/living room. Very uncomfortable
- Nisha (8/5): - Good, value for money. Most of the guesthouses around don't have private bathroom. This one has and was decent.
- John (10/5): Clean and comfortalvd - We had a nice stay at Guesthouse Edinberg, room was clean, upstairs had refrigerator, kitchen with sink and stove top, comfortslve couches tables and chairs and an old galaxy game, no quarters needed. We needed code to get into our room which was provided to us in the message section of our hotel app. The listing says it would be emailed to us but that is where I found it. There were several other people arriving that did not receive their access code which caused a lot of stress. There is no reception desk at this property and no one answers the phone number provided. If this issue can be resolved it would have a much higher rating
- DONG QING (2/5): - Not worth of cad $240/ night
- Brandon (8/5): - Didn’t realize there was a shared kitchen until we arrived
- Richard (6/5): - Room was clean but there was no wifi.
- Ling (6/5): - We didn't get email of the key password and called many times noone pick up the call. We really got very nerous at 7:30pm. Thank God we knock the hourse behind. The little girl called a young boy helped us.
- Belinda (6/5): Mother - Daughter vacation. - This Guesthouse is for single travelers who are on a very tight budget. Looks like a college dormitory. Room was extremely tight and you can hear everyone else in the house come in and out. The room and bathroom were perfectly clean. Checking in and out was very easy.
Great place if you just want a plave to bathe and sleep.
- Jing (6/5): Terrible communication - Communication was really bad. We received email and was told to call to get code when arrived. I replied on the way to let owner know when we would arrive. When we got arrived and called more than 10 times but nobody answered nor replied email. Other guests arrived earlier said they never answered phones. So frustrated!
- Priscilla (6/5): - Stayed for 2 nights end of August. Building interior seemed recently updated, bright lights. The common room in attic was clean with a kitchen that has refrigerator, microwave, sink, stove, cooking ware & utensils. We had to cook simple meals since there is no restaurant nearby. Ample sitting space. There’s TV, an arcade game & chess game. The stairs going up was very steep though so hold onto the railing:-)
But door to the room keeps getting stuck, doesn’t seem to lineup properly with door frame. Room was a bit small for 3 people (1 full bed & 1 twin bed). Not much space for luggage, so we left most of stuff in the car which we parked right in front the building. The plug-in electric heater in the room kept us warm through the night even with the howling wind. The showerhead holder was broken, had to hold it, but still nice to have a hot shower after a full day of adventures.
Was surprised that staff actually came to fix the bed & change towels while we were out.
Overall, the guesthouse served our purpose.
By the way, the thermal bath is quite a hike, about a mile up with no signs along the trail.
- Lisheng (4/5): Room is TOO small - Room is TOO SMALL. There is no space for two people moving around, not even mentioning other features. There is no table, no chairs, not even space for luggage. Won’t stay again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not worth the cost - Kids living behind property constantly drove an ATV by our window. Lots of vehicles going back and forth. Bathroom smelled of mildew. No functional hook for shower head. Throw pillows were stained with an unknown liquid. Upstairs family room was nice but required climbing stairs that really should be called a ladder.
- Sarah (8/5): - Very minimal but just what we needed to sleep. Not a place you want if you plan to hang out there. It’s a great place to sleep and move on with your days activities. Some people I read about and then heard from a couple staying there that they didn’t receive a code to get in but we did not have that problem
- Ivana (2/5): - There was no staff on property. They did not email me a code. I was stranded in Iceland with no hotel room in the pouring Icelandic rain!! Horrible and property staff never answered any calls or emails even from Expedia.
- Christine (8/5): - Very basic guesthouse accommodations. Room was very small but clean and suited our needs for just a place to stay while driving the Ring Rd. Bathroom was tiny.
- Jake (4/5): - The bed was horribly uncomfortable and you could hear everything from the upstairs and the other rooms due to poor insulation. It was very noisy.
- Julia (6/5): - The property was okay. A couple of areas could be improved: - it was very difficult to get a hold of the staff via phone - i know the rooms are very basic but a couple of hooks or shelves on the wall would have been nice
- Nikki (6/5): - It was clean and beautifully scenic! Very cute. Has a little kitchen and seating and games area upstairs. However, no space for luggage, shoes, jackets or anything. No towel racks. No screens on the windows and it was super hot. There were giant spiders so we couldn’t open the window without a screen.
- Chelsea (6/5): - Thank you for our stay!
- Nicol (10/5): - Great property, has everything you need!
- Verified traveler (4/5): For young fit people with small budget only - The place was super basic and with no space at all. One person could hardly fit into the shower (and we are fit people - like the shower width is around 50cms).
Matresses were very bad I woke up with huge backache.
Except that the location and the view from the windows were astonishing!
- Christine (6/5): - Very basic accomodations. Clean and safe. But having a few hooks to hang your coats and some shelves to place small things would be a big improvement over having to put EVERYTHING on the floor. Okay, there were 2 window ledges....
- Lourdes (6/5): - The room in the guesthouse was clean and modern, but small - the shower was barely wide enough to stand in (I am an average size female). It would have helped immensely if there were hooks on the walls in the bathroom and/or in the sleeping area, as there was nowhere to hang things such as clothing or wet towels. However, the surroundings are very quiet and peaceful, and for one night it was fine.
- Rebecca (6/5): - Rooms need a small table and some hooks. Clean rooms and nice area upstairs for eating and hanging out.
- Anqi (10/5): - Clean, easy cooking, unique experience
- Randi (6/5): - Terrible odor. Nowhere to hang coats or towels - not even hooks. No bedside table. Broken coffee machine. Shower runs hot then cold then hot. Rooms were clean.
- Nicole (6/5): - In a convenient area (near skogafoss waterfall and public pool) and staff were helpful. Instructions to the building could have been clearer. We received a code day of on the Expedia app that I am still unsure what it was even for. We ended up wandering around the property trying the code to the Lambafell Hotel and the pods.
- Jasmin (10/5): - Nice rooms that included a small kitchen. Great location for one night or multiple day stay.
- Robert (8/5): - This is a really nice property; clean and well equipped. My only complaint was it was boiling hot when we arrived. It was a warm day already (perhaps unusual for Iceland?) but the little house was sweltering and it was difficult to get a cross breeze as only 2 small windows could be opened. It was uncomfortably hot for about 3 hours (we even propped open the door to try to get the hot air out). Except for the heat, I was happy with this accommodation. Great location.
- Susan (2/5): Disappointed and out of our $ - We arrived, opened the door, we couldn’t stay there, so hot we would have cooked. Extremely remote, didn’t feel safe.
- Christopehr (2/5): - This was by far the worst check in experience ever. You are prompted to ring a phone number upon arrival to receive your room number and code. Originally we were told we would receive an email 24 hours before - that never happened.
We tried ringing the number 15 times over a few hours, never got a response. The worst part is when we arrived at least 4 other couples had the same issue. The only reason we got in was because a lovely lady earlier took a picture of the keybox numbers from the cleaners! If she wasn't there we would have been screwed. Avoid this place until the fix their entry system..
- Emmanuel J. (2/5): - The area was nice, however, me and my fiance arrived Christmas afternoon and could not reach any of the phone numbers in order to check-in. I was supposed to get an email 24 hours prior to check-in but nothing was ever sent. We ended up getting in an hour after we arrived because an attendant came by.
Also, the WiFi worked for only the first day that we were there. It went out the following morning and never came back on. I could not reach the host via call or message. Terrible hospitality and no WiFi. The area was okay.
- Sierra (8/5): Guesthouse Ediborg - This guesthouse was a wonderful place to stay not far from Vik. The beds were comfortable and the shared amenities were nice. My only complaint was the cleanliness of the bathroom. It didn't seem to be completely cleaned between people's visits...
- Jaime (6/5): - The property reeks and hot water runs out quick . Outside view is breathtaking and attractions are very accessible.
- Patrick (4/5): - Check in painful as I had to provide duplicate information that they already had via google forms eg my name, date of stay and booking reference. Great communal area.
- Kate (8/5): - This guesthouse was good location. However, our room smelled a bit strange (like bad cleaning products or urine?) and the other guests were loud (and their troubles opening their doors was amplified in the hallway). Bed was comfortable. We did see northern lights over the volcano that night, sitting in the driveway.
- amanda (10/5): - Cute area snuggled in a valley. Northern lights danced behind the mountain. Check in was very easy. Room was simple and efficient. Unfortunately a strong sewer smell was the first thing you notice as you walk in. If you kept the bathroom door closed in the bedroom the smell lightened almost unnoticable.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Terrible communication. Tried calling the service desk to check in for 2 hours with no answer. The manager ended up coming in person after and giving us our room. Still not sure what happened but it was very stressful and a waste of our time as we thought we would not have a place to stay for the night. As for the room, it does the job for a one night stay.
- Keniamarie (4/5): - Nice
- Wendy (6/5): - Our room had a smell and windows didn't open.
While we were in our room, staff came in and started vacuuming, definitely not invited in.
- Mary (6/5): - Room very small very opening 2 bags of luggage except on beds or blocking the door. Good price but very far from Vik to drive to in the dark with extreme wind on the roads. Had to call staff (who came straight away) to close the window properly but wind still blew hard and loudly on the place all night with electrical outage in the morning (1 hr before check out). Didn’t affect most guests who were already gone. Still Good value for the price as most accommodation is much more expensive.
- Jeanette (10/5): - Great location to relax, so quiet and peaceful
- Carol (8/5): - The surroundings were beautiful. The shared kitchen and relaxing area was very comfortable and roomy. The place was not very insulated so count hear people in the shared space and when leaving in the morning.
- Namrata (4/5): - -The room and the bathroom was not soo clean and tidy.
-They did not have a kitchen/a electric kettle to make a coffee or tea.
-Check-in as easy and did not have any issues even though we arrive at 8.30pm.
-I will not go back to this guest house.
- Christina (10/5): - Walk inside to get landline, door was unlocked. IF you can check in, all is well. Attempted to stay at starlight camping pods owned by same property 2 days later and that did not go well. Location is lovely, close to Seljavallalaug swimming pool. Cute brindled cows next door. However, little to no cell phone service in this area. On 17th landline worked; successfully got code for rooms at guesthouse. By message, codes were not sent til the 18th aka the day of check-out, so that didn’t help. That was unhelpful but innocuous at first. Then they sent that picture to expedia as "proof" of check-in codes at Starlight Camping Pods for the 19th… which were never sent nor did the landline work nor did the phone get answered when we finally gave up and drove out until an area of cell service coverage. thank god we found another place to stay (drove all the way to the city) instead of trying and waiting all night because they were never sent. no refund. Because non refundable, I would understand if WE had canceled. But I asked for money back because we were literally unable to check in and they literally left us in the cold. They said no. all in all I think it would have been lovely if you are able to check in. But I can’t say that is reliable.
- Sue (4/5): - Check in was quite difficult. When I finally did get in touch with someone they were rude. Would not recommend this place.
- Emma (8/5): - There were folks checking into the property at all hours, and the noise made it impossible to sleep. Some sound proofing in the halls could help with this, as the empty hallways amplified voices and the doors being unlocked/slammed shut. Our shower head was broken as well. The check in was easy and someone came to tidy and clean during the day.
- Raymond (8/5): - Good location
- Mary (6/5): - It was unique but people arrived at 1-2 am and woke everyone up both nights we stayed. No one answered the phone when we called the number but finally got an email with a room number and a code at straight up 4 pm. No communication prior to arrival like it said. There were towels but no rags to use. No blackout curtains which left the room bright all night and in July, there is no night! An experience for sure but I can’t say I would return.
- James W (6/5): - This is a very bare bones property. It's a self check-in facility, and is a little unusual in Iceland guesthouses in that there is no breakfast facilities. That said, it was perfectly functional.
- Alice (4/5): - Check in was terrible. No one would pick up the phone. Thankfully there was a worker that passed by and helped reach out to management for the check in details
- Robert (2/5): - Check-in was a severe stress test. I never received the digital access code electronically. On to Plan "B". The sign on the building said to call a number, but having dialed countless times no answer. On to Plan "C". Going into the "lobby", if you want to call it that, the sign now noted two numbers to call, neither of which were answered after trying, again, countless times. Fortunately for my wife and I an obvious employee probably leaving for the day, came to my rescue and got us into our room. An hour and a half of valuable Icelandic daylight wasted. The building itself was a simple barn like structure with two floors. I say barn like because it appeared to me that that was what it was in an earlier life before conversion into a guesthouse. Our room was absolutely tiny. I have seen horse stalls larger than this. As for amenities, there were none, not even a cup in the WC to drink from.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FACILITY TO ANYONE - NOT EVEN MY WORST ENEMY.
- Cody (6/5): - The surrounding area is great. Room is very small and the bathroom smelled liked mold. My biggest problem with the place was the other guests. Everyone was not considerate of other guests. Talking loudly, slamming doors all through out the night and early morning
- Jasmine (6/5): No-frills rooms - This is a no-frills guesthouse that’s fine if you just need a bed to sleep in for the night. Our room had a bed, heater and bathroom, that’s it! They had Wi-Fi but nothing else. Property is nice if you want to do some walking.
- Charles (6/5): - Simple guesthouse. Not much in the way of amenities. No soundproofing can be very loud if children are present.
- echo (2/5): - I am so surprised that this property can be rated at 3! We booked a three beds room, so small! No table, no chairs in the room, only a painted tree stump using as a very small table——don’t think it in a artistic way. The room is under the floor of the public kitchen, so every movement upstairs you can hear!
- Fernando (2/5): - Not recommended at all. Fire alarm started beeping in the middle of the night waking everybody up, water and electricity got disconected. Owner didn't attend our phonecalls and messages, so we were left alone and luckly we got to stop the alarm but with the risk of beeing dangerous to be in the building and expending the rest of the night. Still waiting for an appology and explanation.
- carlos (8/5): - .
- Sara (10/5): - Cozy room with comfortable beds and a gorgeous view of the mountains
- Rene (8/5): - Recreation room, machine for cold water and a coffee machine
- Verified traveler (2/5): Don't stay here - The only thing good about this place was the location, everything else was pretty terrible. The check in process was okay since we planned to be there during given hours. However, of the 2 rooms we booked, 1 of them smelled so bad it was hard to even stand in there. It smelled of mold and mildew. We chose to spend no time in there other than to sleep. It was too cramped to do much else anyways, barely enough room to open two suitcases. The other two people in our traveling party refused to enter our room because of the smell. When we called to get the room switched after noticing the smell, no one answered the phone. There is no one on site so phone call or email was the only option. Because it was after check in time we got no response so had to spend the night in that room. We called back in the morning and they assigned us another room and gave us the wrong room code so we couldn't get in there when we got back. Spent another night in the terrible smelling room for this reason. When we called back again the next day they essentially told us the code should have worked and then hung up. We decided there was no point arguing and left at check out time. The showers were so small you could barely move. There was no division between the shower and the rest of the tiny bathroom so everything was wet and smelly. I would stay literally anywhere else. The water didn't taste drinkable and also smelled like mildew so we went to a nearby waterfall to fill up.
- Delaney (8/5): - Beautiful property, Lovely room. The room I stayed in does get a little too much traffic to expect a quiet rest, as the stairs to get to breakfast were above my head, and the front door that slammed upon entry or exit was right by the room as well.
- George (8/5): - Nice to be sleeping at the foot of the very famous E15 volcano and in a deserted area. Very basic room with a basic bathroom, but that is all we needed for one night on the way to Vik and further East.
Easy communication to get in the room.
- Hollie (6/5): Small Space for Three People - The guesthouse was small and had an upstairs shared kitchen. The upstairs was nice to have but we had three adults staying in the room and it was not enough space. There were about 6-8 inches in between the wall and bed when they were all pushed right next together. The location was good.
- Aura (8/5): - Is a very pleasant experience
- Daniel (10/5): - Nice and convenient.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We’re not able to stay there because no reception in person and not willing or friendly to help in any way
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great stop over place to crash for a clean bed, shower, phone recharge, wifi, and the basics for a reasonable price while driving through this vast area of natural wonders!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Welcome Hotels cannot work with Expedia or visa versa. They don't communicate or have compatible codes. We ended up having to pay for something else at 10:30pm after 4 hours of trying to get them to work it out.
- Chantal (10/5): Location Location Location - This is quite an adorable place to stay. Can't say enough about the gorgeous view!!!! There's a little space on the upper floor that's got hot water, toaster and microwave. Some seating with tables as well as a large comfy couch with tv, pool table and chess board.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Dirty rooms, stained towels, stained bedding with holes in pillow cases + nobody onsite to report it too. We felt like we had to shower in flip-flops.
Pillows smelt dirty when we put our heads on them. Too much of the room was dirty/grimey to be able to put it down as a one off.
Everything needs a good clean/scrub. This was the only hotel in a weeks stay (different place every night) that we have left a bad review for.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very small room. My husband fell very hard trying to get around in the tiny space. Did not use shower because it leaked everywhere and was gross when drain didn’t work properly. Window wasn’t sealed so we had to sleep with earplugs because of the whistle the window made letting the freezing wind in.
Beautiful location but would not stay here again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Old & Uncomfortable - Room was super tiny, it was uncomfortable. Washroom was suffocating, not even enough room to stand. Everything was super old and broken. The view was to die for though
- Amanda (8/5): - It is in a beautiful location. The rooms are quaint but crowded. The bathroom was not user friendly, toilette was shaky, seat was askew. For the price though, very doable.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bad customer service - We reserved 3 rooms for 3 couples. One of the bathrooms smelled very bad, smell like dirty clothes sitting there for a while. We called the owner who said will send someone in to check. Within 10 minutes, 2 guys came and went to that bathroom and said nothing was wrong and he did not smell anything odd. He asked "is the room clean?" We answered "yes". Then he said it's not my fault and I am responsible for cleaning only. If you have other issue, call the owner. We called the owner again and requested to change room. The owner said all rooms are fully occupied and nothing he can do and hanged up.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The room was very small. No furniture except for the bed. It was dark in the bathroom. You can not see if the shower was clean or dirty. They had coffee and tea free all the time.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - no reception desk. you have to call a phone number to receive room info
- Verified traveler (6/5): OK - The
- Darah (8/5): - Very simple, no bells and whistles. Just a place to sleep.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - You can't step between beds it was 3 beds almost attach to each other and shower was full of mold
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The property check in was almost impossible and the check in manager/staff was rude.
There was no staff on site when we arrived at 4:00pm. The Guesthouse posted with a note to call any of the 2 phone numbers to reach the staff. It provided a desk top phone to make call. However, the posted phone numbers got a busy line signal all the time or drop calls. No other guest in the building nor we could find any neighbor guest. I even used my cell phone to call the post phone numbers. The line was disconnected after a few rings. After 30-40 minutes. I got a text on my cell phone and directed me to call another phone number which I could reach a staff. The lady who answered the phone was so rude and hung up once she quickly gave me the 2 room numbers and the codes to unlock the doors. I could open one room but I got the wrong code for the second room. I called again. She yelled at me while gave me the code.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Our room was taken by someone else. Couldn't get in touch with staff on the phone as there were no available staff on site. Tried for almost 2 hours. We decided to just take the available room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good location for all attractions. Easy steps for check in and check out process. Very good option for Iceland backpackers
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay. Window only opened a little, but the room was not hot so it was OK. Very easy check-in and a nice lounge area upstairs.
- Ben L. (2/5): Very poor communication - I had booked a night at this property a month in advance but it wasn’t until 4 hours before check-in that the owner or manager finally let me know that we were all set. This after e-mails and phone calls went unanswered for perhaps a week or more. And then, with me and my young son settling into the room, we got a knock from travelers who said that this was their room! Very poorly handled.
- Francis Rey (8/5): - Good place to stop by in the south coast. Sorta in the middle of vik and reykjavik, like 20 min away from famous waterfalls in south coast. Close to a mountain geothermal pool with amazing view. Dont expect too much, however, place is very small and just good for sleeping and shower. Best feature is location, amazing view all around.
- MattW (8/5): - Beautiful old house situated in a beautiful location surrounded by mountains! The room was clean and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Poor. Rooms very small, should be advertised for backpackers- but to expensive for them
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not recommended to anyone - One of my worst stays. No staff on site and no one responds to help phone #. We even saw a couple that could not check in because they did not receive the email with check in instructions and had to sleep in the lounge area... Overall, condition of the house is poor and room is very tiny and not pleasant. Not recommended.
- Natalie (8/5): Nice guesthouse, great location - Stayed for 3 nights in June 2019. Had read some reviews which were not so good, but I was pleasantly surprised. Self-check-in was fine and the surrounding area is incredible - the guesthouse is situated right in between Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss so is a very close drive to all the south coast sights. The best were comfortable and there is a nice lounge area upstairs. A lot of the reviews mentioned the noise in the hallway - this seems to mostly be the cleaners from around 8.30am-11am and my goodness they let the front door BANG! Not so welcome when you've been up until 3am photographing a wedding! Perhaps someone should tell them to close it quietly or at least to put a stopper in the door - the whole place shakes when they let the front door bang shut!! Other than that, the stay was very pleasant and I would stay here again if need arose.
- Heike (10/5): Praktisch und unkompliziert - In der Nähe der heißen Quelle Seljavellir, bzw. Seljavallalaug
- Jackie (4/5): - There is no staff on duty. There is no wifi even though it was advised. Two people couldn’t check in because they didn’t have keys in their lock boxes. The phone is broken so the owner can not be contacted. The room was smaller than what it was worth and the heater was broken. I would stay elsewhere next time.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, We had booked, paid for 2 rooms & confirmed via Expedia but when we arrived the Welcome Guesthouse Edinborg paperwork/booking only had 1 room booking, so while there were 4 of us travelling we only could access 1 room which was small and could not take 4 people. So when we arrived and discovered this, there was no one was at reception to help us as this is a self check in facility, the courtesy phone at reception to contact management/staff did not work and when I emailed them and phoned them from reception that night I got no reply, (and have not to this day from the Welcome Guesthouse Edinborg). In the end by 1 o clock that night we gave up trying to email and call them, so we agreed 2 of us would take the room and the other 2 had to sleep in the car, we switched this halfway through the night as the 2 who slept in the car were the drivers and we needed them to get sleep, so me and my mother had to sleep on the sofa upstairs. We did meet 2 staff/cleaners very early the next morning who shrugged their shoulders, laughed and were not helpful at all. This was literally the worst stay I have ever had in my life.
- Karissa (8/5): - A neat old building set in a beautiful area surrounded by mountains.
If you have a rental car, this is a great spot to drive out for day trips.
There is no kitchen for cooking, but there is a toaster, microwave, hot water, and a mini fridge.
It has a comfortable hang out and eating spot upstairs.
We were just cold the first night because there were strong winds and the walls were apparently thin!
- Hannah P. (4/5): Cold and Loud. - We arrived at the hotel which is more like a hostel, to no staff and a self check in system. When we opened the room it was freezing with just 2 electric heaters. The shower changed between luke warm, cold and scolding. We were woken at 8am by horrifically loud cleaners, slamming doors and shouting. The property was clean and there was a nice communal area upstairs with access to a fridge/microwave etc. However, would not recommend staying here.
- P (6/5): - Room is clean and bed is good. Howeve bathroom, shower not clean and small.
- Parag (4/5): - Small room. Bathroom lock was broken.. for 3 ppl too small room and bathroom.
- Andrea (8/5): - Pretty basic but location is good! There’s no one at the place, easy check in and check out.
