Guest Reviews
- FelicityU (2/5): Terrible chaotic service! - Came in as quite a youngish couple, left as over the hill pensioners! The food is good but the service totally chaotic. Had some prawns, octopus, tuna fish and 2 prawns in batter. A bottle of wine came to £127.40. OK for what we had but the service was SOOOOOOO SLOW! Will not return!
- Lionel (7/5): The hotel has become a bit tired in parts, but it is on the sea front and not too expensive. - Great view, room on sea front Hotel could do with some more updating e.g. corridor carpets worn. But it is good value to be fair for a sea front hotel. Be aware that not all rooms are the same, some are more spacious or have better sea views. We have stayed before, and as we have come back, don't be surprised there is not too much in this dislikes section.
- GregoryPage (8/5): The place to be - This hotel is unique in that it is so clean and close to the beach and the staff are so helpful The bathroom facilities are dated but in character. My toilet flush was so difficult to flush and there were no plugs in any of the sinks. I could have asked, but didn't. I did ask for a blanket which could have been available in the room, especially as it was November.
- Petrus (5/5): - Hotellärm, wasserrohrbruch, zimmerwechsel, Pool dürfte man nicht benutzen.

- Beatriz (3/5): Para mejorar...
- carolina (10/5): -
- Mark (7/5): Quite good - Location good Air conditioning not working and pool not operational
- Ann (1/5): ABSOLUTELY NOT SATISFIED. - The hotel advertised air conditioner in rooms. When we checked in and paid we found that the air conditioner was not working. I immediately went to the desk and was told it hadn't worked all week I explained that my husband was on cancer treatment and suffered with hot flushes. He needed to be able to rest in a cool room. ( Bearing in mind it was very warm outside.). The receptionist said to open the windows. This would have been worse. I asked for a refund as we needed to move to another hotel . She refused although we had not even unpacked or used the room at all. I booked another hotel WITH BOOKING.COM and we moved.
The hotel advertised air conditioning so the hotel were in breach of their description as set out in BOOKING.COM.
- Anthony (5/5): Passable - It was close to the beach
Restaurant was very good Air didnt work and staff didn't seem to care.
Staff seemed a bit disorganised.
- Turley (10/5): It was good all round - Had only coffee It was a great experience for us
- Sarah (8/5): Cheap cheerful beautiful view from balcony - Clean All good
- Frank (6/5): Pleasant - Position was very good The room had a musty smell and the toilet is hidden behind the door so it had very little room
- Alison (7/5): Good - View. The bar very expensive. Shower didn't work properly. Was only one night stay so not too bothered. Good for the money.
- samlee211 (8/5): Honest review - This hotel is in a lovely location, perfect for our needs. A hire car is a must at the time we travelled. Lots of places had closed, so we intended to drive out.
The staff are friendly.
Very dated and a bit shabby, however very clean.
But cheap and cheerful.
Lovely cat.
I probably wouldn't go back at this time of year.
- Roy (8/5): Very good -
- Louise (5/5): Passable - Location was amazing. No tea, coffee facilities so dissappointing in that way. No fan. No air con. Very very basic.
- Laurence (10/5): Exceptional - The location is excellent
Food and drink are quite expensive
Rooms are a little dated but clean and comfortable
Staff excellent
All round great experience Hotel a little dated
Food and drink expensive
- Arthur (7/5): Good - Yep all ok
- David (9/5): Excellent, quiet location mid-way between Mazarron and Bolnuevo. - Fairly small, traditional, low rise hotel located adjacent to quiet (at least in May) sandy beach. Clean, comfortable room with an excellent sea view. All staff very friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast with waiter service. Easy free street parking just outside hotel. No WiFi in hotel (we were told it would be available soon).
Tea/coffee making facilities in room would be appreciated,
- Gail (6/5): Pleasant - Room had sea view Which was beautiful the Room was dated and very tired looking needs a revamp staff were very helpful No tea and coffee facilities
- sheshe57 (6/5): Very basic - Lovely position opposite the beach. The room was dated and basic and had no facilities, eg, tea/coffee kettle. Staff really friendly on reception. Room was cleaned each day. Restaurant for coffee/breakfast opened at 8 am. We didn't eat there. We had a spacious balcony.
The bed was ok but just one thin pillow. Some blankets in the cupboard if you were cold.
- Anonymous (6/5): Pleasant - Clean and tidy To far from the port
- Derek (8/5): Very good - Would be good to have some TV in English. These days it costs nothing. Even a news channel would do, they ha enough English stay there. On English TV
- Luisa (8/5): - Personal muy disponible, vistas estupendas
- Peter (8/5): as usual very good except for lack of wifi in rooms - breakfast very good
liked location and friendliness of staff no wifi in our rooms
- Adam (5/5): Adequate - Cleanliness of the hotel
Friendly and helpful staff Extremely dated hotel throughout
Needs some money spent on it to bring it from the 1970’s to 2024!
- Charles (7/5): Good - Very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms a little tired and lacked tea/coffee facilities Restaurant food good but not always open
- sexyrexyCheshire (2/5): Great location tired hotel - Room 114...Old tired room, damaged furniture throughout the room, and furniture very basic, the pictures are of the draws inside the wardrobe.. no fridge or beverage tray, such a shame.
The Hotel doors were locked at 21.45 when we returned on Christmas day after being out for Dinner and drinks in a local restaurant....dircetions on the doors said if doors are locked/ closed ring the bell ..with an arrow pointing to a bell on the wall...so we rang the bell and waited...but no reply, thinking that night porter would come let us in as ge might be on his rounds checking the hotel, how wrong we were, we kept rining the bell..ringing the hotel (someone kept answering and then hanging up on us) untill 22.10....so we had no choice but to leave, we never slept in the beds so cant comment on how comfortable they were or not? ....we never really stayed in the room...
Arrived back at the hotel the following morning spoke to the young lady on reception who was socked by our explanation of our nights events...we explained fully what had happened and was offered another night free of charge, this wasn't appropriate as the event we went to was already over....we asked for a refund which was given , we went to our room packed our belongings returned the key to reception and left.
- Gloria (1/5): Great location tired hotel - Location fantastic unable to fault it, directly on the beach, with amazing views out to sea. Room 114...Old tired room, damaged furniture throughout the room, and furniture very basic, the pictures are of the draws inside the wardrobe.. no fridge or beverage tray, such a shame.

- Stephen (6/5): Basic and comfortable - Basic and comfortable - staff helpful - lovely sea view Beds were too small
- Jenny (9/5): Good hotel. - The staff were very friendly & helpful. Not having much to do in that area.
- Julie (4/5): Not worth what they charge will not stay again - The location The interiors bath taps, furniture all needed replacing very bad interiors it was a shame and no food available
- Mark (8/5): great - rigth on the beach
- Anonymous (10/5): Stayed there before and will stay again owner’s and staff are brilliant - Everything Everything
- Loubaggs (9/5): Very good and superb staff. - Delicious food. Good location overlooking the sea.
- David (8/5): Friendly and efficient service at great location. Great value for money - Location by beach was great.
Staff very friendly and efficient Underground car park very small and restricted small parking spaces. Turning around in the car park was extremely difficult
- Susan (8/5): Could do with some more accessible plug sockets. - I enjoyed my stay at this hotel the hotel staff are all very friendly including the cleaners. My room was very clean, it had a tv. There was no mini bar, coffee machine or fridge. I did ask to borrow a kettle which I the staff gave me. My 1st of 2 complaints is that in the room the plug sockets were not easy to use. In front of one was a dressing table and the one as I entered the room, near the door was about 8” off the floor. I wasn’t on a business trip but I needed to charge my phone, tablet and watch. My 2nd complaint is that the life guard was promising every day that the swimming pool was going to be cleaned (a sandstorm had deposited sand in it at the beginning of the week and the water wasn’t very clean it was cloudy) I didn’t use the swimming pool the whole week I stayed in the hotel some people swam in it but I chose not to. I understand that the pool was going to be cleaned at some point but I felt that the hotel didn’t prioritise this. This is a shame because I chose to stay in this hotel because it has a swimming pool.
- Pablo (8/5): - Bien
- Karen (5/5): Lovely staff made up for the tiredness of the hotel and decor - The best thing about this hotel was it’s location on the beach. It was a little dated and in need of some TLC.
- Rafael José (8/5): - Buena relación calidad-precio.
- Mary (9/5): Superb - Location was excellent and facilities were clean and good value for money
- Margaret (10/5): Mediterranean Glow - Older lovely hotel right on the beach. Not overcrowded in May. Late night parties are a bit noisy, but so European to have your morning café con leche on the terrace in the morning.
- Payne (10/5): Very relaxing. Beautiful views -
- Marc (3/5): Requires a refurb - The staff who I met were friendly and it was convenient for where I needed to be The hotel overall is very dated and needs a refurbishment. The rooms are clean but they need updating badly. It really is like stepping back in time and the colour scheme and lighting don't make the rooms a comfortable place to be in. The WiFi is also really poor and only really exists around the reception area.
- Kam (5/5): it did the job - breakfast was 10 euros very expensive for bread and cake, didn't even get a 2nd cup of coffee
- Annette (5/5): Passable -
- Graeme (8/5): Very good - I liked being close to the beach The hotel were unaware that I had already paid for my stay to " booking.com" until I showed them the statement I had printed off.
- Tina-lynn (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (8/5): lovely location, nice staff, would recommend this hotel - ideal situation nothing to dislike about the hotel
- Chris (6/5): Pleasant -
- R9563ROsueh (8/5): Location location location - Best location on the coast as long as you get a sea view room with balcony.Yes it is ‘quaint’ but that’s another reason we chose it.Bed VERY comfortable, plenty of hot water, lovely clean towels/ sheets. Staff a credit to them. All extremely pleasant and helpful.Breakfast was more than adequate.Best pan au choc and croissants . toastada with jam or tomato, freshly squeezed orange juice and the biggest peach I’ve ever had.yes it was served to you not buffet but if you wanted more you’d only to ask.Only complaint was the coffee. It was strong and stewed, not freshly machine made so dissapointing.Plenty of parking in front of hotel so didn’t pay for parking. For some reason the pool and pool area was closed which would bother some people if they like to lounge by the pool.We had the evening meal @13€ which was good value with regional dishes well prepared ,cooked and presented . Disappointingly it had to be eaten inside in the restaurant NOT on the terrace.WiFi onlyworked in the room intermittently but worked in reception,on the terrace and bar.Would I go back? Yes because of the location and the view from the room.
- Susan (8/5): A nice hotel - I stayed in this hotel because it was very near a relative in Spain I was visiting. It’s right on the beach. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms. I asked the staff and they loaned me a kettle. There is a tv in the room, I couldn’t find the English Channel, maybe I didn’t search enough. The cleaners come everyday to clean change the towels and empty the rubbish from your room. To have a shower I had to get in the bath and pull a shower curtain across. I had a balcony which overlooked the sea and a children's play area. Occasionally smells from the kitchen would waft up, I could only smell it if I was in the balcony not in my room. There was no fridge in the room I stayed in. There was a telephone. There’s a swimming pool only open certain times of the year. The sun loungers had no cushions on them. The hotel has Wi-Fi but unfortunately my phone didn’t stay connected. I hired a car and parked in the street outside the hotel so I didn’t have to pay any parking charges. I had breakfast a couple of times in the hotel, it was a continental breakfast, ham, cheese, a cake, jug of orange, toasted bread and jam and coffee. I didn’t see any cereals and it’s not buffet style. This is a 3* hotel and it was very popular with Spanish holiday makers. If you choose not to eat at the hotel there are plenty of places to eat within a short drive of this hotel. There’s the Port in Puerto de Mazarron or the town of Bolnuevo.
- Joan (8/5): - Lovely hotel. On beach. Beautiful views. Don’t go to 2nd floor as there is no internet if needed. We were moved to first floor. Very obliging. Don’t have a first floor room near reception. Very noisy. Problem with water pressure too. Some time no water. But overall we loved it.
- Luis Miguel (8/5): - no tengo la idea,
- Lilian Anne (6/5): - Beautiful views over the sea. Very clean. Needs updating. Caters for spanish
- Dennis (10/5): - The hotel is in a nice position and is kept in a very good condition by caring staff..
- wayne (2/5): aviod - like travelling back in time in very urgent need of refurbishment .bathroom water barely warm bath cold when finally filled took 30 mins to fill bath furniture grubby and tattered miserable staff
- Marc (8/5): Goed voor kort verblijf. - Rustig gelegen maar aan renovatie toe.
Vriendelijk personeel.
- Marylyn (10/5): - Felt so comfortable here. A home from home. Lovely english speaking staff. Beautiful sea view from the room. A perfect stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - La cercania a la playa
- martin (8/5): - Staff are great. Location is great. Value is great. However the WiFi is still awful, and the rooms need some investment.
- jont200 (4/5): Not A Good experience - Expensive and limited menu. Service from a very nervous waiter who ran around but service was poor. Overcharged for a very basic tomato and tuna salad. Pretty average paella, 15€ each. Over charged for average wine, 12€ Not impressed and will not return soon.
- Charlie (4/5): isa - The hotel is very tired, wardrobe door hanging off.
Large cracks in ceiling and walls.
- nicolap508 (8/5): Exceptional staff in diffucult times - Our stay at Hotel Playa Grande was at a time when the Coronavirus state of emergency was just starting to hit tourists hard. We had to ask staff to print boarding passes for our rescue flight (which changed twice in 2 days!) and to feed us for one night in their restaurant. It was an amazing paella! They could not have been more helpful and the place was clean, quiet and as relaxing as it could possibly have been in the difficult circumstances! They opened the restaurant even though there were only four guests left. We did not care one jot that the room was dilapidated and that half the hotel's lightbulbs needed replacing. We are home now, healthy (so far!) and settling in for a long self-isolation period. Thank you so much to reception and restaurant staff. You will not be forgotten by us!
- john (4/5): Great location poor hotel - I dont think the hotel has not been refurbished since it was first opened
- Wander402387 (2/5): Terrible.. - The position of this hotel is great. On the seafront overlooking a fabulous beach. The staff were lovely....no complaints there. But the rooms were dreadful. Not very clean but it wasn’t housekeeping fault. The rooms are tired, old and not nice. And very difficult to clean. The most uncomfortable small bed. Old bed linen. TINY rooms. Broken shower over a dangerous bath and to top it all the toilet didn’t flush. WiFi dreadful. I would never ever recommend this hotel as somewhere to stay...
- caravanman258 (2/5): worst hotel i have stayed in for a long time - unbelievable experience ,bathroom fitings and shower broken , first night a lot of noise so asked for another room which was even worse no wifi no shower working ,on the only good side the staff were very nice but will never go again .the hotel is very old and falling apart and should be close down,i am sure the only reason people visit is the location tapas good breakfast rubbish
- Peter (6/5): Slow pace of life. - Pls....Clean, friendly, right on the Beach. Nice to walk on a deserted beach, watching the locals fish.
Minus....Very small bath, could have done with updating, no WiFi in bedrooms.
- Santiago (10/5): - Muy bien sitio y unas vistas increíbles
- mojo49315 (6/5): Mixed feelings - Attending a gathering of friends, we decided to stay overnight. The staff are friendly, efficient and attentive, and the meals excellent. The restaurant and function facilities are in good order, but the rooms are clean but way past their best and in need of attention, with damaged curtains, worn and rusted bathroom fittings etc but clean sheets. As a room for the night it was adequate, but rather disappointing. Tapas at lunchtime were excellent.
- rob_sastre (10/5): Beachfront touch the water hotel! - While the hotel is a bit dated and rooms can do with an upgrade the location is unbeatable right on the beach, strait onto the beautiful beach.
The staff could not do enough for us and the restaurant is extremely good food.
Overall it’s an amazing value for money hotel.
- jeanpol (8/5): - bon hotel ,service bon propre ,très belle plage vue imprenable
- shelagh96 (4/5): A February fright! - This hotel looks fine from the outside. It was the onlky one open when I was passing through in February. The problems started before I had even entered. As someone with mobility issues I was confronted with a sweeping staircase of 7 steps and no disabled ramp. These steps do not even have a handrail. I was dithering when a cleaner came out for her fag break and she and another cleaner hauled me up the steps. I was told by the receptionist that if I had parked my car in the basement parking I would have had a lift. Err, you have to be a resident to get into the car park, (which is pretty hard to navigate anyway) so that wasn't really an option?
Things do not improve inside. The restaurant/bar is down a level and no one came forward to help me, even though I was the only person taking breakfast. Which was Very meagre. The receptionist told me it was 65€, but that Included breakfast. In other places I had paid 5€ extra for breakfast and got a 'reasonable' choice. Here I got croissants, some cheese slices, bread and orange juice. Hardly worth a fiver.
I can't remember what the room was like, I think I have blotted it out.
- patricia (8/5): Did the job - The room was fine, but the toilet behind the bathroom door was a hinderance.
- ME D J (10/5): - Stayed for 3 nights knew what to expect as stayed here before great location
- Silvia (8/5): - Muy agradable el servicio rxcelente
- paul (8/5): Nice hotel great location - Nice hotel in great lication very near beach. Our room was clean but a little smaller than we are used to. Lovely friendly staff.
- elaine6301 (2/5): Hotel playa grande - We stayed at this hotel from the 24th till the 1st October and what a disappointment no swimming pool open put myself and my husband in single beds receptionist very rude had to complain to Booking.com about her had to get the room changed after getting up set about not being able to sleep in the same bed as my husband hotel a bit shabby room 103 tiles cracked door handle hanging off in the bathroom hardly anybody ate in the restaurant did not cater for my husband who was gluten free I cannot wait to go home this is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in only had to book it last minute as I was due to go to Cyprus with Thomas cook no entertainment no English telly to watch pretty boring really please avoid at all costs
- tabinor2611 (2/5): Never Again - I will start with the good stuff, it will take less time to write. The reception staff were very pleasant. The room had a lovely view.
The room was very dated and things were falling apart. The room and the rest of the hotel smelled terrible, there must be an ongoing sewers issue. The pool was closed, I realise I didn't read the small print but it's still September very warm and a pebble beach with no loungers is a poor substitute. The evening meal took us by surprise very little choice or description of what was what. My wife and I decided to order different things, we were not impressed. Small omelette and half a dozen fries is not an evening meal, no veg, no real choice. I ordered choc torte and got strawberry cheesecake.
Breakfast soon came round and this time no choice at all. We were served 2 plums, 2 choc au pan and garlic fatty ham with cheese on warm bread. The coffee was good but the freshly squeezed sour orange juice was not. I realise this is a popular Tapas location but it's not a good place for foreign tourists. While we were waiting outside to hear if we could move hotels, a guest with unleashed dog sat eating on the out side terrace while his dog urinated on the plants, just to add to the aroma of the place. 24 hours of misery. The result was thanks to Travel Republic for a hotel upgrade to Alegria. Excellent review to follow.
