Guest Reviews
- Miah (4/5): Disappointing -
- Su (1/5): We left after 1 night and found alternative accommodation. - I guess it didn’t fall down overnight. Not very clean, lights not working in the bathroom, broken light over the bed, very strong smell of cooking in the room from pizza restaurant below.
- Achim (5/5): Passable -
- Ruiz (2/5): - Cold, heater noisy, bathroom totally different from pics, stained sheets
- D (8/5): - A very French experience and the location was perfect for us. It was easy walking distance from both Sciences Po campus and the Cathedral. Many excellent restaurants and shops nearby.
The staff was friendly and helpful. The building was quaint with a lovely courtyard. The Continental breakfast was very good, but perhaps not what some American might expect. Our room was small but adequate.
The only thing that was a problem for us was that the wi-fi did not work well on the 2nd floor. Also, the front desk is not open 24 hours a day. Make sure the hotel is aware of your arrival time. I think they can give you a code that will give you access to your room key, but you might ask them before you arrive.
If you are looking for a French experience, this is a good choice. If you "need" an American hotel, try the Best Western :)
- Luca (8/5): - Posizione strategica. Parcheggio vicino
- Iola (10/5): - Basic accommodations. Very friendly staff, great location and wonderful customer service.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The toilet room was tiny and hard to use. No door on the washroom. No dresser. Very small room. Maid service left by 11am. Tiny TV.
- Tyler (8/5): Good for the money - It was fine for the price
- John (8/5): Friendly Place to Stay - We had a great time in Reins and would come here again!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent location, halfway between the Cathedral and the historic church of Saint-Remi. Twenty minutes walk to the train station. Staff was very helpful and courteous. Facility is a little old but well maintained. Be careful about closing hours at lunchtime and at night, and take note of the re-entry key code that is provided.
- Natalie (8/5): Nice basic spot, middle of most attractions - Stay was good, very basic hotel, please note there are no elevators in this hotel. Staircase is a spiral so going up it with a heavy suitcase especially if you have any knee problems is not recommended. That said, the bed is comfortable, bathroom is basic just soap provided no shampoo or conditioner, does have a hairdryer. Breakfast is yogurt and bread, coffee is very good, decent price for breakfast as it's not included. Location is nice, you can either bus or walk from train station (15 mins for either except if sidewalks are crowded walk can be longer). Hotel is near le coq rouge which is a nice place for dinner. It's got the cathedral on one side of town and on the other is where many of the champagne caves are located.
- Theworldswaiting (6/5): Compact but clean rooms - no soundproofing! - The double room we slept in at the Hotel Gambetta was very small but functional. It contained a small double bed, a hanging space (for clothes), a small desk and chair, and a separate toilet room and sink and shower room (although there was no door on the shower 'room').
I had free access to WIFI with my booking. This was accessible in my room without interruptions.
Overall everything was fine. The room had everything required and was clean. However, we were woken each morning by the sounds of other people talking and doors being slammed, etc. The walls are very thin and sleeping-in will be a challenge in this hotel.
The hotel is a 3-4 minute walk away from the centre of town, putting it between the centre and the champagne houses within the city peropherique, which is handy if you're visiting those (a 20 min walk away).
- Ulf (6/5): - Enkelt och centralt boende. Trevlig personal. God Fransk frukost.
- Warwick (8/5): Small but cheap - A cheap but small basic room close to the city centre. Helpful staff and a nice breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Stayed here for business and would do so again - Really nice hotel owners, convenient location to the city center and Sciences Po where I was working. Super delicious restaurant across the street. I would recommend this for a simple and relaxing hotel experience.
- Urswick_2 (4/5): Would not stay again - I found the place quite expensive for what it actually was. No hot water, tiny bathroom with a broken shower handle, breakfast didn't involve a buffet but was served at the table at an excruciatingly slow speed, soundproofing is non-existent.
I confronted the receptionist about the hot water but he simply shrugged and didn't offer any discount as a courtesy.
The bedroom was clean though.
- eak49 (8/5): Simple affordable spot in downtown Reims - Simple and inexpensive spot with a very helpful staff in the Champagne town of Reims.
Highlights:
- Location: about a 10-15 minute walk to wineries like Vueve Cliquot and a 10 minute walk the other direction to the heart of downtown Reims.
- Staff: super helpful and friendly giving us spots to go to within Reims as well as on the way to Epernay.
- Price: cheaper than a 2 star hotel in Paris. Believe we paid 60 euros
- Cute decor: everything champagne including a fish bowl at the reception desk with a bottle in it.
- Rooms: clean with fine decorations
- Small bar: could grab a glass of champagne and take it to the back patio
Lowlights:
- No elevator
- Super small bathroom: only room for a toilet with the shower and sink in another area
- Bit loud at night--not sure if that was a special party or standard for a neighborhood business
It worked fine for us and would consider staying here again.
- Nicola (8/5): Overnight in Reims - We struggled to gain entry to the hotel as the receptionist had left early. Room was big and with comfy beds. The bathroom needs refurbishing as the ceiling in the shower was black with mould. The chap on reception in the morning was extremely helpful and friendly, apologising for the locked doors the evening before. Breakfast was tasty and large.
- bigchesty (8/5): perfect position - the hotel was clean and the staff helpful perfect for acouple of nights stay. The position is away from the centre just enough for easy access but also an interesting walk past some nice bars.It is also opposite a super restaurant.Good for champagne trying there is also agood bar in the hotel.
andy
- Verified traveler (8/5): - great
- B, J, P & R (8/5): Close to city centre - The hotel was close to the city centre and everywhere was within walking distance. The apartment (we were upgraded) was very clean and comfortable. There is a car park almost opposite the hotel or at the weekend plenty of on-street parking (free after 7.00pm Saturday and all day Sunday).
What really made our stay stand out was the Staff, Pearla in particular. Travelling with two small children can be stressful and the staff here couldn't have been more helpful in everything they did.
- KulkijaHki (6/5): Great location just in the city center - Great location just in the city center and the friendly staff.
Hotel already seen time and worn, but if you can live with it, so ok place to sleep ;)
Sadly rooms soundproofing is not good.
So if your neighbor will be celebrating party, yes you can hear them.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel near the cathedral, nice staff, quiet - Nice hotel near the cathedral and the city centre (5 min walk), friendly staff. If you need a good bed for a stop-over with short visit at Reims and if you don't need too much of luxury you are perfect here.
No parking though (16 Euro for 16 hrs at the parking lot nearby).
- Björn (10/5): - Excellenta for being 2 stars. Clean, spacious.
- niels (2/5): Horrible - Horrible.
- 146ranp (8/5): It is value for the money - Value for money since we wanted to be walking distance to Sciences Po university.Friendly owner spoke good english too.
Rooms are decent size. Only thing we did not like is tiny toilets with hardly any doors!! Only sliders.
May not be great for families with older children.
- Mistrusting (8/5): Another quality budget hotel in an ideal location. - First I apologise for the delay in posting this.
My wife and I stayed here for a weekend break in Reims mid September, so end of the season. The hotel is a very good budget hotel, the rooms are a little dated but they are clean and well maintained.
The hotel had recently been taken over by new management and they were having works done to upgrade ready for next year. They owners and staff were friendly and helpfull and we felt more than welcome staying there.
There is free WiFi, but no fridge or kettle for drinks making, but with the new owners his may change next season.
On a down side there is no lift so it's a bit of a chore to climb the stairs with your luggage and there is a music school opposite and during the week you can hear students practicing, but not so much that would annoy you.
All in all I would certainly recommend the Hotel Gambetta, it's a good budget hotel in a building that's about 100 years old. Once again, I can honestly say I've had far worse service from far higher priced hotels.....
- Kirsty_flight (8/5): Perfect location with a great price - When my boyfriend and I visited in September we were slightly nervous after seeing the reviews. We needn't have worried, the hotel was clean and in the process of being redecorated. The location was perfect it was very close to the cathedral and with an entry code to get in late at night it felt very safe. The staff were all friendly and helpful and if I were to visit Reims again I would stay here again. The music college opposite did play music most of the day but that didn't bother us at all it was never going on late at night and as we spent our time exploring eating out and having a good time it didn't affect our holiday.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good, clean, simple but spacious room. - Basic room, more spacious than other places we have stayed. It looks a bit run down once you pass reception but the rooms were
Clean and tidy. We arrived at 10am and were able to check in to our room. Good breakfast, friendly staff.
- tolouse (8/5): fantastic service - Great stay and great location, would be even better with more meals besides breakfast.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Helpful staff - People at the front desk are friendly and helpful. However, the room did not have curtains, so it got very hot during the day because of direct sun light. There is no lift in the hotel, which can be quite challenging to travelers with large suitcases or those who are not capable of climbing the stairs.
- Stutours (6/5): Rustic - Very tired hotel but at the spot of the city where it is just close enough to visit everything. Very close to the cathedral. The room I stayed in was very basic,tv shower. The hotel itself is tired but that doesn't mean it is not good. Breakfast is normal french style. If your not fussy on that there is the pattisier across the street. Plenty of restaurants close by as well. As They don't do evening meals at the hotel. Nice cheap stay over for the Champagne area.
- Crannon (4/5): Sleeping nearly impossible - The people who run this hotel are no helpful and kind. I hate to write a bad review but, while the room was simple and pretty clean, the walls are so thin you can hear everything the person in the next room is saying. You can hear every footstep of people downstairs. It sounded as though everyone using the stairwell stomping loudly. In reality, that's just what it sounds like when you walk normally. There was a leaky toilet somewhere in the hotel so every 20 minutes or so there was a very loud sound of the toilet refilling. The sound was jolting. On top of all that, you can feel the metal springs of the bed. If you intend to sleep, this hotel is not a good option.
- havefaithkeepgoing (6/5): Excellent Service, Good value, Noisy room - We were very happy with their service. From check out to check in, answering our non-stop questions and assisting us with some minor glitch from our previous hotel, they were helpful and quick to response. They even gave great suggestions on where to eat and where to buy (the rose biscuits). We also had breakfast which was okay. A bread basket, yogurt, a plate of cold cuts, cheese.
We parked across overnight and we paid around 20 euros. My only concern was their rooms are so noisy. I can almost hear what the person in the corridor is talking about and worse, we had some kids on the floor.
Other than that, everything was good.
PS. The restaurant across, La Table Anna, two thumbs up. don't miss it!
- K (2/5): Near our daughter's apartment - We didn't enjoy our overnight stay at all and received 0 hrs of sleep! The toilet leaked and made noise all night, the carpet smelled terrible and it had to be the most unrelaxing stay at a hotel that we had ever encountered. The front desk woman was polite however. We were booked to stay more nights but canceled our reservations and had to find lodging elsewhere.
- Laura (10/5): Great breakfast - This is a very clean, simple establishment, the rooms are well-equipped and comfortable. It is two-star so don't expect five-star facilities. The staff are very welcoming and they do a great breakfast. The hotel is well situated, a short walk from the cathedral and the centre. I would recommend the rooms which look onto the street rather then into the middle of the hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Close to vineyards. - The staff was wonderful the hotel was in a rundown part of town, the price was very reasonable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Well situated, simple but clean - This hotel is ideally situated, it is a simple 2 star hotel so don't expect 4 star comfort. It is clean, the bathroom had been renovated and even has a hairdryer. The staff are very friendly and the breakfast is fantastic - fresh bread, croissant, yoghurt, cheese, orange juice, all presented beautifully in a the hotel cafe.
- ChrisL420 (6/5): Better on the inside.. - On finding the hotel Gambetta we were a little nervous at the outside view.A little tatty, very small entrance. There is no parking, but a large underground car park is almost opposite. On walking back to the hotel,we were greeted by some rather out of tune trumpet/trombone playing...there is a musical college right opposite,so if you have a tuned ear, beware! Inside,we were greeted by a jolly lady, who gave us the usual lowdown,in a relaxed manor. Our room was overlooking the main road, but there was little problem with noise, and the trumpet player wasnt playing when we came back later in the evening! Room was adequate rather than good, basic,a bit tatty in places, with oldish bedding and towels, however, acceptable for just a night. Breakfast was the normal french,as ive said before, not enough for us,and we were wanting to eat again by 11am. Location wise was ok,the street is a bit mixed, old and new buildings and not far, maybe 15 minutes walk from the main cathedral and shopping area.
I wouldnt put the hotel on a champagne tour list, but as an overnighter for a visit to Reims,it is acceptable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great friendly service and great location - The hotel was basic and very adequate, it took us just 20minutes to walk to the champagne house's and it was a beautiful town to walk around. I would stay here again.
- 37sams (6/5): Good value - Nice small hotel in a good location nothing special but good value. Good breakfast and parking nearby although you have to pay. We stayed there for one night but i probably wouldn't want to stay for a longer period.
- SarahUK_259 (6/5): Good location between cathedral and Champagne houses - It is approximately a 20 min walk to either the cathedral or, in the other direction, the Champagne Houses. There is a multi storey car park on the opposite side of the road, open every day except for Sunday when you can remove your car but not arrive.
Rooms are dated and basic in terms of furnishings but they are clean.
Good service from the staff and enjoyable continental breakfast.
- joelissa (6/5): Perfectly adequate except shower - Room was clean, beds were hard but fine, inexpensive. We requested an additional bed, it was so problem or extra cost. The shower ceiling was covered in mildew. Not tragic but not good to breathe in either. Shower water was warm but not hot. Very nice staff. Good location because you can walk to both the champagnerie area and the cathedral area. (maybe 2k - 1 mile - to each section).
- edoarda (8/5): Mignon - Nice people at the desk. Very good breakfast. Nice rooms. Good location. I think it's ok for the price.
- bargain_hunter46 (6/5): Beware of double credit card charges from this hotel - We just recently received the charges from this hotel for a stay in March 2011 on our August American Express statement. We stayed two nights and were charged both for our actual stay and over $200 for a night before we even arrived in Europe! Needless to say we are disputing the charge.
While the location of this hotel is great, we will not stay there again given this billing issue.
- sszeke (6/5): No frills but clean room for a night's stay. - The Hotel Gambetta was what one should expect for the 2 stars and price. The room was very small but we had only 2 smallish bags. Our room, number 9, faced the street but it was not too noisy during the night and did not disturb our sleep. The WC and shower are obvious additions, again small but clean. The staff was very helpful and nice. There is no on-site parking, but there is a garage across the street where you can park for 11 Euros a day.
The hotel is walking distance to the cathedral and shops. There is a great restaurant across the street, La Table Anna.
We recommend the hotel for an inexpensive, short stay. We are marking that we would not recommend it to a friend just because most of our friends like to travel "more upscale."
