Guest Reviews
- Michael (8/5): Great room which were spacious and nicely furnished - Staff, especially Lucille, were excellent. It was not hard to walk into the village' The indoor Onsen was too hot for me but the outdoor rotemburo was a very good temperature Only Japanese dinner and breakfast available. I'm not good with pickles for breakfast

- Catherine (8/5): Wondeful staff, great location, would come back but needs some basic updates. - Gorgeous views, amazing location, beautiful. While it was super clean, there were some stains on the sofa and walls - could use new furniture and fresh paint, a little updating here and there. And it had a not great smell to the place (and it wasn’t the sulfur springs - could use room spray or oil air diffusers).

- Michael (8/5): - Love the private outdoor bath with view of the mountains.
Massive rooms.
Great value It’s all fine but just feels a little tired inside
The pillows have weird beads in them. Had to sleep on the spare duvet

- Laura.watkins (8/5): Nozawa grand hotel - Comfortable hotel with spacious room. Lovely outdoor and indoor onsen.
- Karen (9/5): Beautiful hotel great staff - Breakfast was great - lots of choice and staff very friendly and efficient. Beautiful traditional style room but with comfort of western beds Onsen in room was very high temperature
- Melissa (9/5): Superb - breakfast great.
- Sebastian (10/5): Exceptional -
- EverestGuy8850 (10/5): Great dinner menus - With most other accommodation sold out by August the year before, this hotel checked all my boxes except for one drawback being on the tallest spot in town- you have to walk a bit downhill and then up again to access the Hikage ski area( 25 mins walk including using the Yu Road). Do get the full board option. Unless you like the buzz of hanging around noisy bars and eateries apres ski, not to mention the challenge of getting a reservation at your choice of eatery - full board fixes it. You get nightly 8 course kaiseki fine dining menus- felt spoiled! Onsen baths were good, and staff friendly. Tip: if coming from Iiysma railway station, do NOT get, as most people do- the 600 yen direct snow shuttle bus. That one stops at the Chuo bus terminal . Instead go to bus stop number 2 and catch the #9 nagaden local bus that stops at several
Stops before ending at the hotel itself. The bus turns around for its return leg right there
- Connor (10/5): Exceptional - Nice hotel with a cool 80s vibe. Rooms were spacious. Good buffet breakfast. Outdoor Onsen in the snow was a great experience. Not too far from Yu Road and Hikage ski area.
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Peggy (7/5): A traditional Japanese room with a fabulous view - It was a very spacious traditional room with a fabulous view The hotel was a bit dated, but this doesn’t really matter overall
- Marita (10/5): My third trip to Nozawa Onsen. and each time stayed at the Nozawa Grand. I love this Onsen village and its peaceful envi -
- Ronald (9/5): Great Japanese Hotel Stay - Although, the room’s private onsen can only accommodate one person, it was incredible to have that to yourself after a long day on the slopes. The hotel design has a nostalgic 80s feel to it. Quite a long walk to the slopes.
- Jodie (9/5): Superb -
- Elli (6/5): Lovely onsen and spacious room, bit far from main part of town - Loved the spacious room we had and the onsen has a beautiful view over the village. Location is pretty ordinary. Bit of an uphill walk from the village. Glad we only stayed one night then moved closer to town for the rest of our stay.
- Giovanni (7/5): Pleasant stay at an old school hotel with traditional facilities and underwhelming staff - The property's incredible on-site outdoors onsen, the cleanliness of all the property and the helpfulness of one specific member of the staff. All the other staff outside of that one person sitting reception at night. Nobody spoke a word of English and it was really difficult to make them understand my intentions. Moreover, they don't allow guests to use the hotel's facilities past checkout which was one of the reasons why I had actually booked it (e.g. to use the onsen after a long day of skiing, before catching my bus).
- Clarence (8/5): Great accommodation with Onsen. Slightly inconvenient for skiing - Good indoor and outdoor public bath. The room was clean and traditional, with nice view of the slopes. The futon were also comfortable. Friendly and helpful staff, although English can be limited at times. Note the private outdoor onsen is only available in summer. The accommodation is on the other side of the ski lift and ski locker which takes around 15 minutes to walk there. Slightly on the pricier side, and there are definitely cheaper and more convenient options for those who want to focus on skiing
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anne (10/5): Perfect location to stay for a trip to the snow and enjoy the charm of Nozawa Onsen . - Great location, easy walk to Hikage gondola & into main part of town but far enough away to be quiet. Hotel was very clean. Breakfast was excellent. View was amazing.
- Michelle (9/5): Beautiful room and onsen experience! - Onsen was great, added bonus outdoor onsen was very nice too! Our room had a wonderful view of the slopes and town. Huge room, plenty of space to spread out. Solid breakfast buffet. The public bus No. 9 terminal is right at this hotel. Location is further uphill from town, and a long walk to Nagasaka gondola. Closer to other Hikage base area.
- Marn (10/5): Exceptional - Room are so nice and clean. Location is good and able to walk to ski lift.
- Jacinta (9/5): Lovely onsen experience - Lovely Japanese experience in 1970s resort hotel. Everything was excellent
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- normr512 (6/5): Good views, at the top of town - This was suggested to us by our travel agent as the better place to stay in Nozawa. It was OK and comfortable enough. We were sold the room with a private onsen - which was smaller than our bath at home. It is just big enough for one person. However, the larger guest onsen (seperate men and women) and the public onsen in the hotel offer a much better experience. The buffet breakfast is standard fare. The hotel is a short walk from anywhere in town. For anyone with mobility issues Nozawa will present difficulties.
- Galivanting (8/5): Charming and Delightful - Stayed in the traditional room with an outdoor private onsen.
The onsen has a wonderful view of the snow capped mountain.
The room is spacious and comfortable for 2 adults and 2 young children.
The room and hotel is very well maintained and does not feel aged.
Ms Miki at the front desk is ever so helpful and patient.
Location wise, its takes a bit of a walk to the ski area.
The upside on the Hotel location is that there is a Nagaden Bus stop.
- HKGHK (10/5): Well Located Well Maintained Hotel - We stayed four nights during a ski holiday in January. Followed a 25 minutes of shuttle bus transfer from the Ilyma train station, another 10~12 minutes walk to arrive at the hotel.
The check in and check out service is efficient. Our family room is Japanese style pretty reasonably housed 4 adults. The room faces the village town with the snow mountains at the back which is perfect.
Breakfast room on the ground serves excellent western and Japanese food. At night it provides rather simple meals.
There is a souvenir shop nearby the entrance. And a bus stop where scheduled bus travels to the Ilyama station.
There are the indoor and outdoor onsen both are well kept. Enjoyed snowy hot tub immensely.
Overall the hotel provides almost all you need for a ski holiday at reasonable price. It takes 7~8 minutes walk to a lift station bringing you up to the Hikage skiing site.
- Tandoorifromage2 (10/5): Wonderful Stay in the Japanese Alps - We had a wonderful stay at the Nozawa Grand. It was a great way to end our trip to Japan! We even extended our hotel stay for one more night because we did not want to leave! The natural beauty of the surroundings of this mountain town is incomparable to any other place we have been. Our stay at the Nozawa Grand and in Nozawa Onsen was the highlight of our trip to Japan. If you are going to go for skiing, try to book a room with the private outdoor hot spring bath. This was so nice to come back to after a day of skiing. I cannot wait for our return trip to japan and Nozawa Onsen. We will definitely stay at the Nozawa Grand again!
- MYORTHO (10/5): Really helpful reception person - Miki at reception- she was there each morning and evening when we returned from skiing - speaks excellent English and helped us so much with suggested dinner venues, ski lift tickets, a taxi for our departure, our snow monkey excursion and information about where we could buy whatever we happened to need. Every night we’d tell her the kind of food we wanted, including our dietary requirements and she made suggestions which turned out to be excellent. She then directed us and called to make the booking. Having a “concierge” in a non English speaking country made such a difference to our holiday and it was all done with a smile (in a country where there is no tipping). It’s a very comfortable hotel with a lovely breakfast each morning and a great onsen. And the public bus from Iiyama drops you right at the front door.
- lawrencesk (8/5): Delightful staff and wonderful place to visit - This is our first trip to Japan (from Australia, travelling with a 9 year old and a 12 year old). The Nozawa Grand Hotel was our first hotel other than a quick one nighter in Tokyo on our way through. All of the staff were very kind and helpful. The room was a good size, and the outdoor onsen attached to our room was great after a day’s skiing. The shower/bathroom area was a little basic but the beds were comfy and the hotel was well run and clean. We struggled a little.with the food, not being very familiar with traditional Japanese cuisine. For those that love Japanese food though I think you would be really well catered for. We were served a private banquet on our first night, which we weren’t expecting. It was so beautifully prepared and served - but we couldn’t really do it justice, especially the kids who wouldn’t try much of it. They even struggled a little with the breakfast buffet which had limited western style options. There are lots of different bars and restaurants close by though. We were in town during the fire festival which was great to see. We also had a hire car which was great - we drove ourselves to see the snow monkeys which was a great day trip from Nozawa. After we checked out and drove to our next hotel we realised we had left some papers in our room. I called and confirmed they found them and said we would drive back to pick them up in a few days. However two days later they arrived by courier at our new hotel, which was just wonderful of them to arrange.
- VBPUFF (8/5): Well set up, great service - Been to Nozawa Onsen many times but first time staying at Nozawa Grand and I’m happy to say that we are pleased with our choice this time. Our tatami style room is spacious, with separate bath and toilet as well as an area for bags etc. We were supplied daily with treats (biscuits, preserved plum), clean yukata robes, towels, hot water for green tea, socks, hair brush, tooth brush etc. The works really!
The Onsen is clean and well supplied. There’s both an indoor and an outdoor Onsen. The outdoor one is not connected and on a totally different floor, so it’s a bit of a trek to get there but worth it if it’s a nice day where you can enjoy the views while soaking.
Breakfast is 1500 yen and is a good spread of Japanese and Western style options. More so Japanese but enough western options for those who do not fancy rice in the morning.
Loved our stay very much. The only negative thing which cost the review its fifth star is that if you’re a light sleeper and your room is near the entrance/car park area, you’ll be woken up at 4am by the snow plough every morning if it’s snowing.
- gingersg88 (10/5): Good trip - Its our first time to Nozawa and i am grateful that the reservation staff is very very helpful and patience in answering my lots of email enquiries. Not prompt but informative.
Was quite worried we may have issues going to the hotel from IIyama station as we have many luggage and going on a public bus. But was surprised to see its quite empty most of the days :)
Not many food choices near the hotel during winter. Even though the front desk recommended us some restaurants, we went hunting during one snowy night, either to find them closed for good or not open that night.
So if you are not adventurous in navigating where to eat, suggest you book the dinner in the hotel.
The dinner was quite good but quite disappointed with the kid's meal. I booked 1 adult meal and 1 child for my elder kid and youngest and disclose their ages. They served wine to my elder and my son thought it was Ribena and drank some. No drink was served for my youngest child and they charged me when i ordered an apple juice.
Bf wise, very very small varieties and basically just bread with jam for the kid. I asked for a boiled egg, initially they rejected my request. But later on they took in after i showed them there is nothing my youngest can take apart from the bread.
Overall, its a different experience. We didn't explore more of this town as we only stayed for 2 nights.
- nomadgirl365 (10/5): Favourite part - the outdoors onsen! - I loved staying in Nozawa Grand hotel. On arrival I was greeted by lovely receptionists who accompanied me to the room. Although I booked a non-smoking room, I felt a strong smell of smoke inside. After complaining to the manager, I was offered another room. For your further bookings, make sure that you ask for a non-smoking room to avoid surprises.
The location of the hotel is really good, it takes you about 10-minute walk to reach the lift that brings you up the mountain, where you can take a ski lift to go further up. There are plenty of little hot baths around and you can experience different kind of holiday here. If you'd rather not go to the public bath outside, use the one in the hotel, they have two onsens, an indoor and an outdoor one. Every time I went there after a full day of snowboarding, there was no one so in a way I was lucky to have the whole onsen just for me.
The best part of my room was a 24-hours running hot tub on the balcony. What a pleasure to sit in the hot water for a couple of minutes before you go to bed or when you wake up. (Definitely recommend doing both!)
The breakfast in the morning had both Japanese and Western food, and if you sit by the window, you can enjoy the view of the mountain while sipping your morning coffee.
Overall, I had a pleasant experience and I would recommend this place to the visitors of Nozawaonsen.
- DaveV359 (8/5): Good hotel - We found our hotel very comfortable, rooms are spacious, and we will return.
We spent very little time at the hotel but it was very nice to come back to after a day on the slopes.
Be prepared for alot of walking as it is up a hill in a nice quiet location.
Cleaning of the rooms was at the very basic level and did not meet expectations and level of service from staff was of a low standard....although very polite and courteous they would not go out of their way to make guests stay memorable like most hotels. Dissappointing when you get a shrug of the shoulders for a basic hospitality service. Was going to give 3 stars because of this but the huge warm room made up for it and already looking forward to going back.
Plenty of restaurants around and decided ot to eat here for our stay.
- angelap777 (10/5): Fantastic Hotel - We as a family of 4 really enjoyed staying at the Nozawa Grand. The customer service was impeccable and they did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable. The views from this hotel which is situated on a hill just a short stroll to the main street of Nozawa are amazing. We stayed in a Japanese style room and there was a separate little seating area with a sofa, fridge and tea facilities. The onsite indoor onsen is very clean and warm and the outdoor onsen was incredible with views overlooking the gorgeous village. One of the best outdoor onsens I have experienced. It's simply amazing sitting in the warm waters whilst snow flakes gently fall down on you! Breakfasts were substantial with enough choices to fill you up and the dinner we had on our final night there was spectacular. Will definitely stay here again :)
- J002468 (10/5): Fantastic - Stayed in the 'Special Japanese/Western-style' room on the 4th floor and could not have asked for more. The hotel staff were so accomodating and helpful. The room was large, well equipped (with warmed toilet seat!) and the multi-course Japanese 'banquets' were magnificent for adults and kids - something to look forward to each night after skiing, after an onsen in the hotel of course. If you are thinking about where to stay, then stay here.
- psyancegirl (10/5): Excellent Service, simple but great! - We really enjoyed our stay here. From the ensuite onsen, the provided robes, slippers and socks, excellent restaurant and extremely helpful staff, it made our stay very pleasant and allowed us to have an unforgettable and uniquely Japanese ski experience.
- Sightsee802661 (8/5): Enjoyed my stay. - We stayed 4 nights in February 2016. We enjoyed our stay very much. Room is newly renovated. We love our Japanese & western room, that's two single beds with a tatami area.
Hotel is 20 mins away by foot to U-road and bus stop is just at the entrance of the hotel but by their local bus and not the Nozawa express bus so it will take longer to travel from Iiyama.
Basically food in whole Nozawa are not really that good n hotel dinner was a disappoint too. Breakfast is also nothing much but enough to fill you up before heading to the slop.
I'm not sure if I will be back but overall it's really not bad if it doesn't cost too much.
- Dave66F (10/5): Miss Lawrence made our stay! - Miss Lawrence went out of here way to make sure that we had a great stay. She was the only English speaker on staff at the time and her concern for our well being was really touching. She also corrected an error which resulted in our lift tickets being overcharged!
Our room was great - a western room with an attached onset tub, which was also large enough for a tatami for our teenager. Choices for breakfast is limited, but there's plenty in town and on the slopes for lunch and dinner. All in all, a most pleasant experience. Thanks again Miss Lawrence.
- katjeAnchorage_Ak (8/5): Miss Lawrence and the outdoor onsen made our stay - We had a nice room (mix of western and Japanese styles) overlooking the mountain. Spacious for a family of three. We lucked out as it was the week that the Nagano Prefecture experienced a snow storm. It's quite a sight to sit in the outdoor onsen overlooking the village while it's snowing. The village is cute and very traditional like a Japanese version of a town in the Swiss alps. Miss Lawrence was incredibly helpful and made arrangements to change our baby's meal to one appropriate for her age. The dinners were incredible. Best meals of our three week trip to Japan. Hands down.
- VanessaY650 (8/5): Things have greatly improved ... - This is our second time to stay at Nozawa Grand Hotel and we felt the service has improved greatly. The staff are very friendly and are always smiling. They are willing to help out in any way they can and make you feel really welcomed. By the second day we didn't have to ask for our room key - they knew which one it was.
We stayed for 3 nights and had brekkie each morning and one dinner at the hotel. The breakfast offers quite a lot of choices - Japanese and western styles with fresh fruit and fruit juices, too. A few more choices of bread would be nice. Everything is made fresh and topped up when necessary. Dinner is a little on the small side, but offers a good variety of 11 local dishes, served at a relaxing pace. The other two nights we ate outside. The staff even offered to make a booking for us, which was very helpful. During the ski season it's crowded, so I strongly recommend booking each night.
We had a room on the second floor - which was excellent for our needs. The room was spacious enough for 3 adults and was always clean and well-looked after each day. They supplied different nibblies to go with out tea and plenty of fresh towels and yukata's - each day, which was very good. The room had a decent size fridge, so we could stock it with our own stuff. There were more than the usual number of hangers, so it was easy to hang everything we needed for the next day. The beds were very comfy and big enough - the cover is a little short for tall people, but I never felt cold. We only ended up going to the main public bath once, as having our own bath in the room was excellent - esp. after a long day of fun and skiing.
To get to the "pair ski lift" in the morning, is very easy. The hotel offers a little discount (200 -300 yen off) for ski lift passes. The hotel is a bit separated from the main area of the town at the top of a hill, but that also makes it very quiet and peaceful. We will definitely stay again ...
- terric347 (10/5): Great experience all round - Family of three in a tatami room overlooking the ski runs. The chair lift to the ski runs is super close and the skiing fantastic. The village is cute and interesting if your not a skier. The room seems to be traditional and we get our beds laid out in the evening and packed up and replaced with a table and chairs during the day. Breakfast is very satisfactory.
