- Mcfarlen (8/5): Good - Staff was great
- Mark (10/5): Historic, charming hotel with great restaurant and free REAL breakfast. - Not a chain! It’s comfortable, historic, charming and staffed with friendly knowledgeable people. -0-
- Kevin (8/5): Great atmosphere for a one night stay. - I loved the historic aspect of the hotel and especially liked the saloon. Parking was a little odd.
- Debbie (7/5): Beautiful old building, food was pretty good, the room was okay. - The people were very nice. What we liked best was interacting with the people of the town who were dining there. It was also prom night, so we got to see lots of young people dressed up. Our view of our room was the roof of the building next door. Very early in the morning a train went by blowing it's whistle (kind of like in the movie "My Cousin Vinnie".
- Bronya (10/5): - Loved the building and the stories about it. The Jamie putting out breakfast has some fabulous tale.
I definitely recommend this hotel, Coffee pot in the room. But I understand there are risks with historical buildings.

- Chatfield (10/5): Our 2nd stay - Historic property in downtown Clayton. Beautiful antique furnishings and Tiffany lamps. A delicious breakfast bar and eggs to order comes with the room. Liked everything!
- George (10/5): -
- David (9/5): A beautifully restored, historical hotel. It has a very nice outdoor space to sit or eat. Stay there - The breakfast was good. Oatmeal, fruit, pastries, breakfast burrito or quiche. The server was very nice and attentive. Much better than the average chain hotel breakfast. Bathroom was very clean but rather limited on flat spaces for toiletries, but was not a big deal considering the authenticity of the restored historical hotel.

- Marlene (10/5): Great hotel so glad we found it and had the chance to stay. - Location to where we were headed and having the restaurant and cute saloon in the hotel 😃. We didn’t get to stay longer based on our trip schedule :-)
- Don (3/5): Great historical hotel, but with low quality staff. I would not return or tell others to stay there. - The room was great. I was very excited about staying in this historical hotel. However, we had several negative interactions. The posted sign said the doors would open at 3:30, but they didn’t open until 4 pm. As we were standing in line to check in, a worker asked who is on the motorcycle. My husband turned around and she announced “you took up 2 parking spots, could you move as far over as you can?” He did go move the bike, but he was only on a single spot. Him moving did not allow for any more vehicles to park. We got the clear insight that she did not like motorcycles. We came down for dinner that night and walked through the swinging doors into the restaurant and were told to turn around and talk to the hostess. There was no one at the hostess stand. We waited until she returned and then she rudely asked if we had a reservation. We did not and she acted like it was impossible for us to be seated. She took us into the restaurant and there were plenty of available tables. We were told about breakfast the next morning and we asked if we needed a reservation. We were told no and told the start time. We arrived for breakfast and were shocked at the items set out for us. It was more of a grab and go than a breakfast. The same woman who made the comment about the motorcycle was there and she was pressuring people to go eat outside.
- Erik (9/5): - Everything was great. People were friendly, hotel was elegantly decorated and affordable, and the room was nice! The only complaint I have was that there was a loud train that came by and woke us up with its horn several times through the night. I don't think it's the hotel's fault, but if this is a regular occurrence, I think potential visitors should know about it.

- Mitch (7/5): Nice hotel that retains its historical flavor. We would stay here again. - We had not been to Clayton and this stay was part of a two-day trip for us. We liked the hotel. The room's bed and its temperature were comfortable though I would have liked a larger screen TV and a sitting chair that was padded. I'm too old to sit on a wooden/hard surface chair for very long. The location of the breakfast was good. The breakfast itself was good. We had dinner at the hotel mostly due to its convenience and because of the inclement weather. The chicken sandwich didn't meet my expectations. Sad to say, but I've had better chicken sandwiches at fast food restaurants like Arby's and Wendy's. If we were to stay here again, we'd probably look for different options for dinner.
The breakfast portions (we had the quiche) were disappointingly small. Also, the restaurant ran out of the ham quiche. I would have preferred a larger glass for my milk instead of having to use a few of the juice glasses.
- Lee (9/5): We will be back and already have recommended it to our friends! - It was great to experience the way the old Fred Harvey hotels must have been like many years ago. The updates to the architecture and overall cleanliness was exceptional. The price was comparable to the more common modern vendors, but offered a much better experience and no doubt memorable stay. The dining room and saloon are especially noteworthy for their appearance! We will be back! The dining room and saloon are only open on weekends. However, the dining room is open for breakfast and it was very good.

- James (10/5): A wholesome places to refresh. - Very well run. I stay in a lot of hotels and this one has one of the best staff and management I have seen. Did not have a gym, or at least I did not see one.
- Robert (10/5): -
- Jackson (10/5): - Charming historical building, with a great proximity to Capulin volcano.
- Sue (8/5): Plasant place to stay for the experience. Glad we checked it out. Enjoyed the history., - Historic restoration Couldn't adjust room temperature. We were too warm.
Breakfast was fair, but nothing special.
- Scarlett (10/5): A refreshing oasis after a long journey, made even better by the genuinely friendly staff. - The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and the rooms, halls, and lobby were clean and well maintained. The hotel felt like a beautiful oasis for travelers who had likely spent long hours driving through desolate landscapes. Despite the freezing temperatures outside, the warmth we received from the staff at the Eklund was exactly what we didn't know we needed! Thank you for the wonderful experience! While we didn’t feel unsafe, we did notice that the room keys included the room number and hotel name, which differs from common safety precautions used by many hotels.

- Amy (8/5): -
- Phil (10/5): - Friendly environment
- Sandra (3/5): I would not return. - The building was beautiful. We arrived an hour early as we forgot about the time change. The hotel was not even open in the middle of the afternoon, The owner answered our knock on the door and said we would not be able to get in until 4PM. Instead of letting us wait in the hotel lobby, we were sent out to wait in our car. The town is small and had no open restaurants or coffee shops to bide our time. The breakfast was basic as were the amenities and the staff service..
- Cheryl (10/5): - Loved the room. No just a bed, but an ajoining sitting room. Owners were very friendly!! Nothing

- geonerd (10/5): -
- Lawrence (10/5): great! would stay there again - This a restored historic hotel with the charm and quirks one can expect to find in a building that dates back to the 1890's. And it is located close to a train line with a train or two during the night hours. Below the "My Cousin Vinny" level, but it is pretty loud. However, the hotel is clean, very nicely restored, staff were super friendly, room was great, the food was great. And there's a historic movie theater across the street. A very welcome change from the cookie-cutter chain hotels.
- Fred (10/5): -
- Gregg (9/5): I would definitely stay at the Eklund again. - It’s built in an 1800’s building but completely modernized. The rooms are clean and well appointed. The staff is very friendly. It’s very nice to have a restaurant in the hotel given that this is a small town with few options. The free breakfast is pretty weak. Very small portions of cold items. Oatmeal, biscuits, cakes, etc, and lukewarm coffee.
- Jeffrey (10/5): -
- Thomas (9/5): -
- ray (9/5): Overall pretty good - Very friendly and helpful staff Breakfast
- Debra Bolton (6/5): -
- Melissa (9/5): Wonderful atmosphere makes this hotel a destination stop! - Really loved the atmosphere- like walking into the early 1900’s. But the rooms had all the amenities and comfort you could want! Had to park on the street.
- Hall (9/5): We enjoyed it and would stay again - Historical hotel Not enough parking on the weekends
- Jason (9/5): - The old style hotel and the great decor add to the charm. The other guests were great to chat with, and the waitress in the dining facility was wonderful. We enjoyed the out dorr.sitting area where we could have a drink and smoke a cigar. We were staying on site and not driving and still held to a 3 drink maximum. Normally, it would be okay, but in a cocktail, there was barely any alcohol. We finally got a bottle of wine and went up to our room. I am glad they dont let people get drunk and drive away that shows care.the old menu was better for meals. This was very limited and flavor was okay.
- Teresa (8/5): Quaint town, cool historic hotel comfortable and charming - Historic Hotel great customer service e Off season so restaurant and saloon closed when I was there
- Cynthia (4/5): Disappointing - Very low quality Bed to small tv too small no closet terrible view tiny windows
- Parker (6/5): - restaurant looked cool. but unfortunately only open thurs-saturday.

- Thomas (5/5): Disappointed - Not sure. It was just a room. I chose to stay here because the price was comparable to others in Clayton however, other rooms had microwaves, refrigerator this was just a room. Being historic I expected more
- tweresa (6/5): -
- Bo (10/5): -
- Carl (7/5): Pleasant visit in historic Clayton. - Historic. Good location Restaurant open weekends only
- Craig (9/5): Clean, comfortable stay in a history rich hotel. -

- Nathan (9/5): Superb -
- Matthew (10/5): An authentic small town experience with excellent food. - I love the old time feel and sense that it was a center of the community, a part of the town.
- Elaine (8/5): Quaint Historic Hotel - This historic hotel was really neat. Loved looking at the furnishings and items hanging. The bar was original to the hotel. The rooms were fine with TV and good sized bathroom. The breakfast was plentiful and made to order. Not a huge selection but more than enough to satisfy. Nothing really other than was concerned that we had a pet friendly room. Usually they have a smell that can't be cleaned but didn't have any issues.
- Geoff (10/5): Exceptional -
- Derek (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julia (9/5): Great stay, comfy beds, and pet friendly. Nice restaurant in the hotel. - Great place to stop when traveling across Texas and New Mexico.
- Lemley (9/5): Superb - The character of the old hotel came through, yet it had the modern comforts. The restoration is faithfully and tastefully done.
- Michael (10/5): I would recommend a stay here - It was older but modern, a lot of history a beautiful place
- Dianne (8/5): Beautiful building - Ok Selections
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matt (10/5): Exceptional - a beautiful, well kept historic property, lovely bar, and exceptional innkeepers !!
- Sue (9/5): Had a ghostly charm - The hotel has about of history and charm
- Patricia (10/5): Escape the ordinary and stay in this charming, historic hotel! - Charming historic hotel - well cared for. Clean, comfortable room. Friendly staff. Pet-friendly. Delicious breakfast. I do wish they didn’t charge a late fee for arrivals after 10:00 PM. Also - you cannot leave hotel easily after that time (i.e. if you left something in the car or need to walk your dog).
- Ron (8/5): Very good -
- Kirk (10/5): Exceptional - The old beautiful structure, the ambiance,
the staff, the apparent Christian atmosphere. Accommodations were all great. I would really have enjoyed access to the balcony out front to sit and sip a cup of coffee.
- Zeevaert (8/5): Very good -
- Creswell (10/5): Exceptional -
- Crystal (10/5): Our stay at the Eklund was a great visit and the staff was excellent - The decor of the whole place was unique, it took you back in time. Loved it The bed wasn’t as comfortable as we had hoped
- Nick (5/5): Passable - Ordered a king bed and got two smaller beds. The clerk had no idea of how to fix it.
- Larry (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Corley (10/5): Great place to visit - Uniqueness Nothing
- Linda (9/5): The condition of this historic hotel is impressive. - The breakfast was fine with a selection of baked options, cereal, granola and fruit.
Two egg dishes were also offered along with coffee, tea, and juice. During serving hours, I would remove the plastic wrap covering the various dishes.
- Curry (8/5): Very good -
- Donald (10/5): We really like this place, friendly and very attractive. - We had stayed there once before and were delighted with the place. This second stay was just as pleasant. The accommodations were fine, and the staff was so pleasant. On arrival we asked if the room had a refrigerator. (We hadn't asked when we made the reservation.) Unfortunately, the clerk told us, all the rooms with refrigerators were booked, but with a twinkle in her eye she said she'd see what she could do. We were in the room less than ten minutes when there was a knock at the door and a very nice young fellow brought in a mini refrigerator and set it up for us. The people were so friendly and the place is so nice, we'll look forward to staying there again. There was nothing not to like.
- Dawn (8/5): Wonderful stay would definitely stay there again. - Beautiful hotel room was great. Disappointed the restaurant was not open in the evening but the breakfast was great. Could use coffee in the room but otherwise great place to stay and the staff were wonderful. Restaurant not open every evening and no coffee in room.
- Dean (8/5): Nice place to stay on a road trip. - Breakfast had a wide variety of healthy options. Loved the decor. Late opening for registration/room (however, it was Sunday).
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gay (7/5): Good - A step back into another era.
- Inna (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brenda (9/5): Charming hotel and the hospitality is terrific. - Perfect location to break up the drive to Colorado for us. Charming place and everyone was so friendly. Delightful stay.... We need a king size or two queens for bed - the one queen made for a restless night. I'll book different next time.
- Kermode (10/5): Very historic and well cared for property. Warm and friendly staff. Great meatloaf dinner. -
- Teresa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Coker (10/5): Wonderful place wonderful people. - Always love this historic place with their kind, considerate and helpful spirit. We were not disappointed. Incredible breakfast to boot! Like visiting home.
- Bruce (10/5): Just an awesome experience with wonderful staff - I couldn’t be more happier with staying here. I was stranded near Des Moines and the tow truck driver recommended this hotel. I arrived at 8 pm and was greeted by staff and invited into their restaurant which was amazing. The food came out hot and fresh and breakfast was awesome! The staff was so friendly and accommodating. Thank you all again for a wonderful stay and oh I forgot to mention the hot water for the shower was instant and stayed constant. Super awesome!
