Guest Reviews
- chie (7/5): -
- George (7/5): Good - Free drinks Sleeping on the floor
- Roya (9/5): Calm an relaxing stay - The room was clean and spacious. The staff were nice and helpful! There are two hotel Asyl in Nara. This one is “Annex”. I arrived at Christmas night to the wrong location and the staff were really a big help to reach to the “Annex” hotel. Not really a negative point, but be careful that there are two hotel Asyl in Nara, which are related. This one is “Annex”. If you are using public transport, this hotel is accessible by bus from JR Nara station. It’s NOT accessible from Kintetsu-Nara station.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Andre (10/5): Friendly staff - Friendly staff and good breakfast, spacious room, very satisfied
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- steven (6/5): location not good - it is old and dated, compared to other hotels we stayed at throughout japan it was in our impression in need of modernisation,
everything worked as it should but with a tiny tv and very small bathroom it just did not appeal,
the beds were hard as usual in lots of hotels but they seemed hard and old.
its location is not very good for your average tourist but they do run a shuttle bus to get you to nara bus station and back at certain times a day.
staff were very helpful,
- Verified traveler (6/5): Friendly staff, very helpful, but old dingy hotel - Great staff, very accommodating
Old dated hotel, dark and dingy
Very small bathroom
Nonsmoking room smelled like smoke
Too far from deer park to walk
- claudiac67 (4/5): small, small, small - We stayed at the Hotel Asyl Nara Annex for one night as part of a tour of Japan. The hotel is close to the railways station and it is part of a multi-purpose building. The reception is on the second (first floor in Europe) floor, which could be reached by escalators. Rooms are very small with really tiny bathrooms, which seem to be coming from a ship cabin. They are small even for Japanese standards. Beds are clean and confortable. Rooms are oldish-looking.
Staff at the reception are slightly brusque.
Western and Japanese breakfasts are offered but be aware that it is a fixed tray in both cases, so it is not possible to chose the food. The wastern breakfast is savoury, with eggs and sausage. Do not expect bread, jam, crossaints and cereals.
- jmluc90 (6/5): Not amazing, but could be worse - Right, to the brass tacks. Stayed one night, had a Japanese style room, parking was good and wasy, the TV was tiny, the room was probably the largest hotel room i've ever had in Japan, the bathroom was clean but nothing great. The one thing I did enjoy was the "ofuro" common bath. Having said that, the bath water was boiling hot! after I got out I looked like a lobster for quite some time. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the hotel but it wasn't really anything special. Having said that, I had a restful stay and isn't that what it's really about?
- OoiBengCheang (6/5): Hotel very popular with group tours - I only stayed one night here for a business trip. There is a large gift shop in the lobby. Wifi connection was terrible in my room. I had to sit in the corridor to get wifi.
We stayed in a double room and it was spacious. The hotel was old but well maintained. Breakfast had a lot of variety.
- mysyahrizal (6/5): too stingy in lights & old furnishings - No sufficient lights in corridors and rooms make it gloomy and quite scarry. Those old furnishings and its colors made me unsure about its cleanliness. Rooms are spacious. We can not adjust the air conditioner to make it cooler. But they have good breakfast...
- Verified traveler (2/5): Nothing like the facade promises. - We found this hotel to be quite unpleasant in a number of ways but most of all because it was extremely overheated and although we were on a no smoking floor it smelt as though people had been smoking there since the place was built. We had two rooms, the air-conditioning did not work in one of them. The bathroom upgrades consisted of fibreglass installations akin to those you find in a caravan, albeit bigger.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Out or town, old, poor wifi - This hotel is out or town and far from thé park. There is is nothing around. Wifi is very poor. The room smells bad and it is old.
- Teresanorris (8/5): Close to train station. Great breakfast! - We stayed two nights at the Hotel Asyl in Nara, Japan. Our room was quite large and roomy. The beds were low to the ground but were comfortable. We had a roomy sitting area with a small table and two comfortable chairs. The bathroom counter was big enough to spread my toiletries out on the counter (and I have many!) Their breakfast buffet in the morning was quite large and very good! We enjoyed trying some of their Japanese style foods as well as the usual eggs and small sausages. We especially liked their signature smoothy drink they gave us each morning freshly made from cabbage, pineapple, yoghurt and soy beans--great way to start your day! The staff was very friendly and helpful! It took about 45 minutes to walk up the hill (around 2 miles) to the Todaiji Temple. Our biggest complaint about our room in Nara was the control mechanism on the wall for the air conditioner. It would automatically turn itself off every two hours making the room very hot and stuffy and did not switch back on automatically. It made for very interrupted nights of sleep.
- Rosco (8/5): Easy access to city, archeological site - Desk staff had little English but keen to help. Switched room and all cases on request. Bicycle hire a bargain and better-than-average type. Bus passes door for access to main station and city.
- birdie_reviews (8/5): Great value Japanese style accommodation - Finding accommodation for a family can be difficult in Japan, especially if you have older children. I booked this hotel through the Japanese travel website Rakuten after having difficulty finding affordable accommodation for a family of 4. We stayed in a Japanese style room which was huge, for about $200.
The hotel is a bit run down. The entrance and lobby are OK with a nice gift shop adjacent. The corridors to the rooms are gloomy and dark. However, we were pleasantly surprised when we entered our room. There was an entry area to leave your shoes before stepping onto the tatami. The room was quite bare apart from a table and 4 chairs on the floor. We had a private bathroom which was tiny but adequate. There was also a small fridge and tea making facilities. Despite appearing a bit run down, everything was spotlessly clean.
Futons and pillows were stored in the cupboards and we got those out ourselves. The futons were very, very thin. Only about an inch thick, it was pretty much like sleeping directly on the floor. However, this was our first Japanese style room so we enjoyed the novelty of it all.
I would have given this hotel 3 stars, but it earns a fourth for the wonderful public baths - divine! Ladies have the second floor and men the third. We used the public bath instead of our tiny shower and it was fabulous. I had two baths and had it all to myself both times - as did the boys in my family. The hotel provides yukatas and slippers.
The hotel had free wi-fi in the rooms. Our room faced onto a noisy, busy road but the air conditioner drowned out the noise so that was not a problem. The hotel has a free carpark if you have a car. They also have a free shuttle bus that runs to the Kintetsu and JR stations. We caught the bus to the station at night to eat out and caught a taxi back which was inexpensive. There are places to eat a short walk from the hotel too. Japanese style buffet breakfast was included.
I would recommend this hotel for a one night stay but probably not more than that. We enjoyed the novelty of a Japanese style room with plenty of space and the wonderful public bath but a second night on the thin futon would not have been as much fun. Good value for money and staff were all nice and helpful. Don't expect them to speak English, it is not a hotel frequented by Westerners. Which makes it all the better. This is by no means a luxury hotel but it is good value and the bath is a winner!
