Guest Reviews
- Emma (7/5): -
- Nurten (10/5): - Very nice location and kind owner
- Chung (8/5): Very good - Mathias the host is a nice man. He speaks fluent English. The location is quiet but close enough to the town and close to the church where you can attend a unique local mass on Sundays. The luscious surrounds of the garden makes a relaxing stay. If you want to cook there are amenities in the room for this, plus a fridge. This stay makes Easter Island more affordable. Mathias also offers pick up and drop off at the airport. The hot water in the shower doesn't last long.
Soggiorno veramente piacevole!
- Daniel (8/5): Very good -
- Leslie (4/5): - Since this property is priced towards the lower end of the price spectrum, I was expecting it to be basic and no frills…
The Good:
- The property is situated close to corner stores (2 minutes), restaurants and souvenir shops (5-10 minutes), and the waterfront (15 minutes), if you don’t mind walking.
- The wifi is strong, though a couple of times was hampered by power outages.
- The room was spacious, and the bed was comfortable.
The Okay:
- The room became very hot during the day. Opening the large front window helped with ventilation, but didn’t have a screen, so mosquitoes were able to enter. A floor fan would have been nice to help cool the room off.
- The room had a kitchenette, but was very limited in the amount of pots, pans and basic accessories, making the preparation of meals challenging.
The Bad:
- The property has great potential, but overall has been allowed to fall into disrepair. The grounds are untended and badly overgrown, and the room and bathroom were very dirty and in need of both a terminal cleaning, and basic repairs. This is well beyond what would be expected of a basic, low cost accommodation.
- I was told that the property had 24 hour hot water availability, but I did not have hot water for the entire duration of my stay. Cold showers, after a few days, lose their appeal.
For those looking for basic, economical accommodation, I would suggest looking elsewhere, as I cannot recommend staying here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property is better than the photos. The room is simple without daily service but has everything essential, especially gas cooking & small fridge. The hosts are helpful & friendly. It’s close to shops & town central which has free wifi.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - La cama un poco incomoda
- Eva (8/5): - Great hospitality by the owner, with tips and recommendations. He helped organizing tours, renting a car, and even cooked fish for the guests one evening. The place is clean and comfortable, its location is excellent, with 5-10 mins walk to shops, reastaurants and to the port.
- Ellen (10/5): - Authentic stay in Easter Island. Mathias was born on the island and his love for the island shows. His cabins are outfitted with locally sourced wood. He spent time telling me which time of day was best for which attraction and he helped me retrieve my lost Lugue from the airport.
- Jeff (10/5): Wonderful stay - highly recommended - I stayed at this property for two weeks and greatly enjoyed my stay. The cabins/rooms are simple, but very clean and comfortable. The owners/operators (Matthias and Alejandra) are a lovely and helpful couple... Matthias speaks very good English.
The property is very conveniently located near the main road (close to the church). Most of the rooms overlook a nice garden and provide lovely, green views of bananas, coconut, mango, lime and other fruit trees. Being on the property gives you the feeling of being in the countryside despite the central location. I found having access to a gas burner in the room to be a great advantage given that food costs are so high on the island.
I would highly recommend the property, for its excellent value and for the pleasure of the surroundings and the hospitality of the owners.
- Gillian (8/5): Wonderful trip - Really wonderful trip, the hotel rooms are clean and spacious with little kitchens. The owner and his wife were super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. It was a decent place to stay:)
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Rustic accomodation that I liked! Appliances all worked, cold shower though.
- carol (10/5): Six Stars! - I can't say enough good things about this place! Matthias and Alejandra made me feel completely at home. We grilled out more than once. There was even a celebration for another guest's birthday!
One of the most interesting parts of the stay was the coffee. Matthias grows organic coffee in the garden (along with delicious avocados). I'm a coffee fanatic, so he let me pick my own coffee in the garden. Then, he taught me the entire process of how to bring coffee from beans to cup. It was fascinating! The best part is that I'm bringing organic coffee I roasted myself home from Easter Island to give as gifts. That's so much more interesting than "normal" souvenirs!
- Erica (8/5): You can rest as your home - In June it's too cold in the night in Easter island. I should have needed to prepare for it. Except for this, all are good; cozy room, kind staffs and good location.
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- Juergen (8/5): Gutes Preis/Leistungsverhältnis für Kostenbewusste - Guter Ausgangspunkt für eigene Unternehmungen.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Easter Island - Huts set in wooded "glades", adequately equipped with well-used kitchen equipment and towels. BUT cockerels and dogs were noisy and biting insects attacked. Mini-market and small restaurant within 200 yards and interesting church playing unfamiliar tunes at 09.00 and 18.00. Helpful owner and free airport transfer. Everything in Easter Island is expensive as it all has to be flown in thousands of miles. Very interesting moai and history, but you'll do a lot of walking. Forget lounging on a beach - there's only one. Good diving. Perfect for talking to someone special because there's no late night life.
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- steve (4/5): no WiFi - need upgrade Wifi connection. room is very dark.it is not good value for this kind facility .
- Clarence (8/5): Islander life - True islander style guesthouse experience - basic but comfortable. Chickens running free and exceptionally friendly cats, this is all part of the islander lifestyle and culture. Brilliant if you want to get out of the drab of 'just another hotel room' and you're out all day exploring anyway. Supermarket just a short stroll away and the main strip a 5 minute walk away.
The only disappointment was the intermittent connectivity of the free wifi, but it appears to be chronically island-wide. Shout out to Mattias for a very comfortable and enjoyable stay!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not worth the price. Any other location would not allow this substandard lodging.
- brendan (4/5): Centrally located place a bit past its prime - The owner is really friendly and obliging but the place has seen better days.
- Verified traveler (6/5): No fans, but great location - They arranged for someone to pick us up and take us to the airport. They also arranged for a group tour. It was the start of summer, and there is no fan, and the windows have no screens, so it was pretty hot in the room. The breeze from outside, didn't make it to the room. It was cooler at night, but for an afternoon siesta, it was too hot and sticky. The room is very simple with no wifi or breakfast, but there was plenty of hot water, and the location is great. There is a little market a block away, an internet cafe a couple of blocks away, a restaurant on the corner, and a 10 minute walk to the center of town.
- Brian (6/5): Maybe more rustic than some can handle. - Property is showing wear and tear and is in need of maintenance, but service is good and owner is very helpful. Overall a nice place.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Rustic - Host and helper were lovely. Provided free hotel transfers. Able to book tours at reception. Location close to main street with various shops & restaurants. Cabin was very, very basic: fridge, table & 2 chairs, gas cooktop, sink area (no hot water in kitchenette), double bed, bathroom with shower (good hot water). No wifi or TV in cabins. A broom needs to be provided to remove the growing dirt and dead cockroaches. Laundry service provided, though not recommended. A costly stay given the very, very rustic accommodation.
- Henry (8/5): Low cost, friendly but rustic. - The cabins are basic but have all that is needed. The owners are extremely friendly and, several times each week invite their guests to a barbecue/party - which I found a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable experience. In a place like Rapa Nui, I think it is vital for visitors to engage in conversation with locals: the exchange of political views (always helped along by a beer or three) and the local knowledge gleaned from such encounters far exceeds anything that can be learned from a guidebook!
- Wing Yiu (8/5): - Staff are nice and the cabanas is located near the main street (around 5 minutes walk). But wifi signal is weak.
- val (4/5): Mislead relating in negative experience - Upon arrival, no one met me regardless of what Matisse (who ran the hotel) said! Actually the owner of a nearby camping spot took me with his car to Moenga. The grounds and the room were less inviting than I anticipated as per the listing. I had a large room, but it was yucky. It was piece meal, patches of every sort of material that didn't blend. Shower had some other person's hair in the drain. Yes there was a kitchen so to say, but I had no desire to use it because of the conditions of the room. Chickens that kept up loud clucking and crowing early to late.
Walking about I came across another lodging that was immensely better and I arranged to move there the next day. She also suggested Patricio for a guide/tour. Problem was, she didn't speak English. When I called her later that eve to see if the tour was set, I had to use Matisse's phone...he dialed the number and pretended to talk to her! He said to me, use my service as its cheaper and good, it includes lunch. The tour and guide he booked me with was terrible! and the price did not include lunch. I learned later he had lied to me about Patricio! I could not wait to get away from him, the room and that side of town! The hotel I moved to is ECO and welcoming and kind :KEU HENVA
- CHI KUONG (8/5):
- CC (4/5): Good location but disappointed... - I was disappointed about the condition of the place... given the pretty good ratings/reviews online. Rooms definitely can be much more cleaner and smell better. There was a lot of bugs (spiders etc.) inside and the linens (bedsheets and towels) smelled of dampness/moisture (didn't smell clean) as did the entire cabana. The toilet didn't flush ast first, but was fixed immediately. The hot water (shower) was intermittent; we have a baby so had to time it to make sure there was enough hot water to bathe her. The kitchen sink was leaking (pipes under sink) and flooded the kitchen/living area so I had to use the bathroom sink (which was much smaller). On the other hand, the owner/hostess was great and friendly and the location was convenient if you didn't have a car, you can walk to the Main Street/Town.. We still had an excellent time in Easter Island!
- Robert (10/5): Glad I stayed here; already booked return stay. - Great location near town and half block from the church, so easy to attend 8.45am Sunday service in Rapa Nui language, which is very, very beautiful and one of the highlights of my trip. Moenga owner is very helpful and books half day and full day tours for the guests. Very peaceful and quiet location--banana, guava, and avocado trees are now in fruit, which owner picks for guests daily. He goes fishing a few times each week and cooks the fish for his guests over the fire in the evening. Main street from the church to the harbor is half block away, post office is 2 blocks away (be sure and stamp your passport with their gratis stamp at the counter), and lots of restaurants and 2 minimarkets about 3 blocks away, as well as car rental places. Very happy to stay here and was best value I could find. I already booked another week here and requested the same room I had these past 7 nights. Owner is long time former tour guide and knows all about the island and has very helpful advice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): island - The owner is Rapa Nui and has a lot to share regarding the history of the island. He gave us a tour at a price lower than traditional tours. It was not a upscale place to stay but it was a experience like camping and also living more like a native on the island. We are happy with our experience.
- Santos (10/5): Extraordinary experience in Rapa Nui - Cabanas Moenga was beyond my imagination!! The stuff takes care of the guests like we are their personal guests. I did not join but the owner took other guests to a short trip introducing the area, and he also offered a fish BBQ a night to all the guests. His friends also joined and we had such an international social time. (Of course, if anyone did not want to join, it was totally fine not to do so). The owner was unbelievably caring, and when I missed the pick up for my pre-planned sightseeing tour, he called the agency and arranged a re-pick up for me. Moais, Birdman village, beaches, all the places and things I experienced was super there, and I am sure the stays with Moenga enhanced my experience in Rapa Nui in a very Rapa Nui way. Awesome!!
- Nate & Carole (10/5): Great location and great host with Mateus. - We found many locations that may have been "prettier" but the location and the help we got from Mateus was invaluable. If we needed a ride he was there and never expected anything n return, also had great knowledge of the island. I suggest taking the basic bathroom stuff with you. As we see it most of the time you will be out anyway and things are easily purchased. He also had great fires at night with the guest. I highly suggest this cabana.
- Vincent (6/5): A nice choice for easter island stay - This cabanas is located close to the main street of hanga roa. It does not have any wifi , internet access and tv in room. I think it is a plus to stay focus to all the wonders on the island and excellent excuse to be away from city life and recharge.
The owner was very helpful to offer support for my stay on the island.
- Verified traveler (8/5): All you need - Mattias and Karine rule! A great place to stay for a rustic, cabin-like experience...there's a common fire-pit/grill where all the guests in the cabins gather for large meals and conversation around the fire. Mattias and Karine are very helpful for whatever you may need and they also conduct tours at no extra cost if there is somewhere you wish to go. Easter Island is still yet off-the-beaten-path traveling (and hopefully will stay that way permanently, though that is already changing), so any traveller there must not be high-maintenance, otherwise they will be uncomfortable. If you need a 5 star all-inclusive resort to be happy when vacationing, then Easter Island is probably not for you. But if you are adventurous and believe that the journey is the reward, then you will be so happy in Easter Island and at Cabanas Moenga. They are centrally located in the one village on the island, Hanga Roa, and everything is a convenient walking distance. Just go!
- Zen (2/5): Hotel part of Easter Island package - Very disappointed with the accommodation. This should not be called an hotel, not even a hostel. Room was dirty, lots of spider webs and dead insects on the crockery. Stove looked like it had not been cleaned in years. Bathroom leaked every time we showered and owner did not bother to address our complaint. No windows which opened other than a big sliding window with a big crack and the door. Entire property is not maintained at all. Will definitely not recommend it if travelling to Easter Island.
