Guest Reviews
- diecela2024 (10/5): Amazing - A very accommodating and welcoming staff. Wort the money. A cool, clean and comfy bed. Everything thing is perfect. Very much appreciated feeling. Recommended hotel. So relaxing. Feel very at home. The place is worth memorable. Very much happy to stay.
- David (8/5): - The room was very large and comfortable. I used free parking in the market place, about 200 metres away. I had set dinner in the evenings, which was fine. Nice walking and running alongside the canal.
- TheJ0hns0ns (10/5): Great stay in a cute town - Top spot in a cute town. We came to Sas van Gent for a meeting at the Marina and found this is one of the few places in town to stay. We were more than happy with our stay, given a 2 bed apartment. It was a bit stuff to start but opening a few windows solved that problem.
Everything was clean and well kept. Will most definitely stay here again in the future
- Stefano (8/5): Excellent Stay - I had an apartment with two rooms , chitchen and Living room. Fantastic stay, very quiet and cozy, excellent position in the town, very very good.
- Carolina (10/5): Recommended - I really enjoy my stays at Hotel Royal, I visit frequently and their staff are always friendly, the room are always cleaned to a very good standard and the food at the restaurant is very nice.
We komen graag terug.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Mooie ligging heel mooie kamers. Top hotel
- Gaeun (10/5): Cozy and reasonable price - We’re satisfied with our stay. I like that my room has a living room. Staffs are kind. And I’ve heard that the hotel restaurant is really good. We’ll choose this hotel on our next visit and experience the restaurant too.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent hotel - For the business person it has got everything you need. Great location, very good facilities, a good restaurant called Bottles and breakfast is excellent. Highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room was spotlessly clean, receptionist at check in and check out very nice, excellent wine bar straight across from hotel, pleasant area to walk around on my own.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Prima verblijf in hotel Royale. Nette schone kamer/ appartement. Ontbijt goed!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Grote kamer. Alleen erg warm.
- Christer (10/5): Family spirit - Family owned 4 generations. They are buying properts slong a street and remodeling. Some rooms with kitchen. Jens the boss coolest cat in town
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Gezellig, netjes, fijn ontbijt, kindvriendelijk.
- vivek_kool (6/5): Nice hotel on the border of belgium - Stayed here 2 times for the business trip. Clean nice rooms, family run hotel and restaurant. The restaurant is expensive but then isn't whole europe? The breakfast offered is quite good and includes fruits, juives, cheese, eggs, cake, buiscuits etc. The rooms are comfy and bathroom big.
- Chris (6/5): Too much noise, staff not realy caring/helpfull - Sas van Gent Nice town to visit but not realy a place to spend a night!
We had a good time and enjoyed a good beer at the river side? We did a hike downtown.
Our room was big including a sitting room. This was great. The hotel also has a good kitchen and winebar - but rather expensive!
Desadvantage: the noise on the terras of the restaurant and in the street that kept us awake, even after mid-night!.
The breakfast was OK! Served in a rather typical "Holland" scenery.
In the booking we asked for a secure place to put the bikes. The lady at the reception took us to a secure place when we arrived. But after when we left the lady in charge (cleaning???) gave us the key with the "command" to bring this back .....she rather preferred chatting with some people outside then clean and help the customers. This was realy "not doen"!!!!
- erika (10/5): Leuk hotel - Super ontvangst, ruime kamer en lekker ontbijt, prijs kwaliteit dik in orde
- Angelo (10/5): - Top
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice place, great restaurant
- Mark (8/5): - Hotel is adjacent to main train station and very central. Easy to find and suprisingly easy to park (right next to hotel) and only £5 for overnight!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Pretty hotel near Terneuzen - The hotel is located in a pretty town near Terneuzen. It's simple to reach it and it is close to different restaurants and pubs. Rooms are big and spacious. The first night we felt cold because in our room a radiator didn't work well, so the day after the staff gave us another room warm and comfortable.
Staff cherful and available with all we needed.
Beautiful experience.
- andrewsY6422QN (6/5): If you like retro you’d do great here. - Decided To stay local from work than normally travelling to Gent or Brugge. Read the reviews and thought this was the place for me. Was hurried to my initial room which was from the main hotel. It was an apartment away from main hotel next to a noisy concert hall. I decidedly felt unsafe, the room was overbearing with poor decoration, cold and stained carpets. Requested to change rooms which the hotel immediately obliged to an equally retro room with to be fair good facilities: comfy (single but booked a double which was not available on first room), a good fridge, hot drinks, and good quality toiletries. However to say that the hotel has a lounge does not appear true, there is little opportunity to relax away from the room and thank god Albert Heijn was open to grab a beer which could not be bought in the hotel. This visit was not helped by the town being mostly shut on a Monday, the prices in the restaurant were not conducive to the pocket of a business traveller on expenses but a colleague did say the gastronomic reputation was second to none. Therefore a tip to Philippine was necessary and this did not disappoint. The breakfast was good and plentiful and albeit I had a reasonable stay, for the price I will make the journey to a mainstream hotel chain where I’m happier. Thank you but “not my cup of tea”
- akg_ng (10/5): Price/Performance very good - We stayed like about a week at this hotel. In our room there was a tiny table, a single seat, tv, small fridge, a wardrobe and the bathroom has hair dryer, towels, shampoos, shower gels, etc. Our room was very clean, and the heaters were working very good. Also wi-fi was excellent. Staff was very friendly and kind. The breakfast was very delicious, there were lots of different breads, cheese, hams, jams, teas. Highly recommended.
- haylogirl1 (6/5): Trip to Sas Van Gent to visit friends - We stayed one night in room 23 which was a short walk around the block from hotel reception and Bottles restaurant. The stairs were steep but not a problem for us. The apartment was clean and comfortable with self catering facilities and a sitting-room area with table, chairs and sofa, TV, kettle, microwave small hob, plates, cutlery, everything you may require for comfortable stay. Only small issue was very limited coffee/milk/sugar. We missed breakfast so can't comment. It is from 7 to 10am though.
On our return visit that week we stayed in room 50 on 2nd floor in the building opposite Bottles restaurant. The two flights of stairs leading up to our room were very steep so be warned. Room clean and comfortable, three single beds, wardrobe, TV, quiet area, nice view of church clock tower and roof tops. Limited coffee and milk powder/sugar, which was a small shame. Plesant, basic hotel accommodation. Photos show view from room 50, bedroom/bathroom
- herman (6/5): - Matig hotel.
- Steef (10/5): Excellent - Very complete apartment, large living room.
There was even a ventilator in the bedroom. Good and complete breakfast.
Nice restaurant with good menu and excellent choice of the chef. Good price for what you get.
- Muzammil (6/5): Average hotel - We were given an apartment at the third floor. Rather steep and difficult stairs. Apartment was very spacious but slopy roof was making it uncomfortable to move around. Beds were also average. Apartment was about 100 yards away from the hotel and on the first rainy morning we had to wait for an hour to get to the main hotel for breakfast. Breakfast did not have much hot options and was of basic standard. Location is very quite and nice. Cycle renting, the main reason to opt for this hotel was not available. Overall it's an average 3 star hotel with everything at acceptable standard.
- IlseTV (6/5): Basic hotel - The hotel offers basic rooms, but they are very clean and the staff is corteous and helpful. We stayed there for 1 night, combined with a seafood festival in a neighbouring town. It was ok. The breakfast buffet has everything one would like. Different kinds of bread, cereal, fresh fruit, juices, yoghurt, cheeses, cold cuts, eggs... Delicious coffee and several kinds of teas. More than ok!
- jimmckendrick (6/5): Nice but has its drawbacks - First of all it's a nice hotel, rooms are acceptable and comfortable and the price is reasonable, drawbacks are very noisy heating good luck getting big bags up the narrow stairs, for a quick stay though it's good and I'd come again, the breakfasts down in the restaurant are good and the evening meals are superb but the hotel just lacks a little sparkle
- KenWoo56 (8/5): Hotel with quirky romance - The Royal seems to have grown to the neighboring houses over the years, which makes the setting a little odd but individual. The one I had was pretty big and had a recently renovated bathroom, which was nice. Not so positive were the steep stairs, the distant parking and the soft bed. When we had breakfast around 8, the scrambled eggs were already gone and weren't replaced. And you'll get a hand-written bill, that's pretty rare nowadays! Altogether it's still a good place to stay though :)
- JPvanDierendonck (6/5): Little town Royal - Hotel with a lot of rooms split over the street and in a old postoffice all redecorated nice and cosy for the price quality the price is a little bit to high.the food they serve in the restaurant is good.
A good stay for bussiness and holiday in the centre of coast Ghent Antwerpen and Brugge.
- Sierfly (6/5): Nothing special - Just a place to stay but nothing special. If you have big luggage - better stay somewhere else as there is no lift and very uncomfortable stairs.
Room was very cold! I had 2 beds and I took all the linen to cover myself.
Owner is very nice. Internal communication could be better - at check out lady didn't know that I've already had paid and I needed to show invoice. What if I had no invoice?
The only reason to stay there is to go to restaurant Bottles, drink a lot of wine and then you have short distance to your bed upstairs ;)
- spudlicker (8/5): Useful hotel accommodation coupled with very nice resturaunt - The hotel is in a small town on the Belgium Dutch boarder near between Ghent Belgium and Terneuzen Netherlands. This is a great hotel to have as a base and go out exploring. I had an over night business stop here as it was situated near one of our suppliers. The hotel has rooms in the main building and then has other rooms close by in houses that have been converted in to apartment type accommodation, which I stayed in. This was made up of a large bedroom, bathroom, lounge diner/kitchen, just right if you wanted to keep costs down a little and make some of your own meals. The apartment was clean and warm with everything you might need. If you do stay here try and go in to the Bottles Resturant which is part of the hotel, we had a great meal with some very nice wines, it made the stop really relaxing after a very busy couple of days. Yes I will try and stay here again.
Restaurant sehr schick, Frühstück total in Ordnung.
Ontbijt is goed verzorgt.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hotelkamers over diverse gebouwen verdeeld.
- Sofia (8/5): - Bra hotell i mysig liten stad. Trevligt o bra bemötande av personal.
- ChrisDunwoody (8/5): Wow. Hidden Gem!! - One night business trip. Hotel chosen on internet because of proximity to worksite, however it has turned up trumps. Quaint and old fashioned exterior. You check in via the restaurant. Turns out this is the real gem. One of the best meals I have had in a long time and not overly expensive. You come away from the table thinking that it was worth it which is not often the case in a standard chain box hotel. Friendly staff. Amazing wine menu. I only looked at the reds and that ran to over 20 pages!! Only downside is no A/C in rooms.
- Jen (8/5): Cute hotel located near the sites - The hotel staff was awesome and even helped to carry our luggage. They made changes to our room to accommodate our family and give us more room. We loved this stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good sized room - The service was fantastic and breakfast was great.
- Buzz D (8/5): big rooms - good location for me, right by the canal lots of bars and restaurants.
- CanadianInItalia (8/5): Enjoyable stay - We traveled to Sas Van Gent as we were traveling with my mother-in-law in April 2012 and wanted to visit her home town. The rooms were really nice and large, as were the bathrooms. We stayed on the main level of one of the buildings, and my mother-in-law had a room upstairs from us. The hotel's location was convenient and in walking distance of everything. The staff were nice and it was easy to find our building, even though the rooms were not in the main building with the restaurant. We also liked that the rooms had coffee and tea.
One thing, the main desk is in "Bottles" restaurant, it took us a few minutes to find it. We ate at the restaurant one night and it was really good as well. Would highly recommend!
- ChrisMaes (6/5): okay - This is an average hotel: it's not bad, but it's not great either. The hotel consists of a collection of buildings scattered in the street. The reception is in the restaurant so if you are not staying in the same building you will have to go outside for a small walk.
The rooms are large but a bit of age. As a result of this the rooms are also not soundproofed and you can hear your neighbors quite well.
We did not try the swimming pool facilities so we can not comment on them.
What we did try though is the dinner in the restaurant (restaurant bottles) which we can really recommend!
After the amazing dinner we had, the breakfast was a little disappointing. It had a nice assortment but the bread was dry.
The town itself is very quiet, most of the time you are the only person in the street, especially during the weekend and off-season.
- beautyandthegeek725 (8/5): Nice hotel depending on the room that you get - FYI the hotel does not have a lift and some rooms are up some steep flights of stairs. The rooms are pretty large with a nice kitchen area. They are kept in pretty good repair. I personally like rooms 31-34 that are larger and not in the original hotel which is older. They alo provide a pretty nice breakfast every day. The town really does not have much that the larger ones do like shopping, and lots of restaurants, and is not close to a train station. If you want that I recommend staying in Gent.
- UKDonna (8/5): Did Everything we needed it to... - Its a lovely hotel in sleepy Sas Van Gent.
The Reception as you have probably read, is in the Restaurant (Bottles) then there are rooms upstairs or in other buildings outside. Breakfast is served behind the restaurant in a nice room. Breakfast was your typical....cereals, pastries, eggs and bacon, cheese and ham, make your own toast, tea, coffee and juices...enough to set you up for the day. Our room was in one of the buildings outside which was not a problem for us. Nice and secure. A big room with TV and small fridge in the wardrobe. Masses of storage. Big walk-in shower. Fixtures and fittings and carpet all appeared to be new. I think there has been a small refurbishment recently. The only thing is, you have to go outside and walk a few steps to the restaurant for breakfast which was fine for us as it was dry but I can see it being a problem if its pouring with rain.
The staff are polite and non intrusive. We didn't try the swimming pool facilities so can't comment on them.
If you need a Hotel in the area, visiting friends or on business then I throughly recommend it. Sas Van Gent is very quiet but you can reach Ghent by car in around 20 mins so a cheaper option to staying in the City.
- abneez (8/5): nice stay - we were there after 1st january so there was nobody there (on arrival but the next morning) even receptionist. They called and informed us before. We were the only one in the hotel! That was nice. We got the first room. It was too small so the next day we asked for a bigger room and it was arranged. Breakfast was fine for the small hotel like this. Luckily, we could enjoy swimming there but we had to go to another building of the Hotel Royal because the pool is in the zone of Apartment Royal.
In that area, it's just so quiet. We went to Gent, Belgium. So we could see something we had expected such as museums, shops, restaurants, etc. It was a short ride to Gent.
- travelabit (6/5): Good place, but needs soundproofing between rooms - Depending on which building your room is located in, you may have a different opinion of this hotel. Some of the rooms are quite large and have separate sitting areas, and others are a lot smaller and are up a flight of steep stairs. No air condition was available. Sas Van Gent is a small town, so you can open the windows and not get a lot of noise, but if it it hot it would be hard to get enough air flow to cool the room down.
Some of the padded chairs had a musty smell when sat in. My major issue was with the lack of soundproofing between the rooms. You will hear even the smallest noise from the next room if you have one that adjoins the next room.
Restaurant has a limited menu. It is an upscale place and you need to allow some time to have a meal.
- Saskia-W (8/5): Nice place - The hotel is actually a retaurant (including the reception) and a few buildings in the very near surrounding wich contain the hotel rooms / appartements.
Our hotel room was not very big, but it was okay. Bathroom a bit dated, but also okay.
Restaurant modern and nice.
Very friendly personell.
The hotel has a swimming pool and sauna area.
Sas van Gent is a nice, Dutch place, with a small harbour.
It's not located directly at sea, but a 20-30 minutes drive brings you at the beach.
