I could use a beach chair in our private villa since i love tanning. Food was mixed depending on a dish but the drinks were delicious.

brightonmonkey (2/5): Can’t wait to leave - When a luxury hotel only provides 330ml drinking water a day per person and refuses to allow guests to buy their own water offsite you know there is a problem. Everything about this place comes at extra cost. Even the ice. There is a long list of “don’ts”. The “complimentary” (paid for at booking!) breakfast is so miniscule it defies description, including coffee weaker than my grandmother’s dishwater. We spent three days, two nights. Day 1 - constant noise from electric sanding behind our room (where the hotel workshop is). Day 2 - pool area dug up for fictitious health and safety reason. Day 3 - pool area construction work continued in the morning, in the afternoon leaf blowing (quite funny to watch the guy who clearly had no idea), and jet washing paths - so noisy it was impossible to stay around the pool. Private beach? Non-existent. The view is to die for, but it almost killed us - we honestly cannot wait to leave. The staff are all friendly and embarrassed, but the whole place has the feel of “couldn’t give a ****”. I suppose most guests who come here are as rich as Croesus, but for us this was a special trip and a special occasion. If you come, maybe you will love it. Others’ reviews seem to say so. We enjoyed the bars and restaurants outside next door much more. You’ll get better service, better food and a better experience. For us this was an expensive waste of money. Who wants to spend their holiday complaining?

987haroldk (6/5): Paradise lost - My first piece of advice is to read the other reviews. We were originally swayed by the number of 5 star reviews, but re-reading these, they tended to be quite superficial, or often, from groups staying in one of the larger suites. That said, I’m not sure how they missed or avoided all of the other negatives. Looking at the 1-3 star reviews, we experienced all of the negative issues, and probably a few more. We are not complainers, but couldn’t let this one go. We hope that these comments can be used constructively by the management, but all of the negative prior reviews suggest that they have had little or no impact so far. My guess is that the majority of the blame here can be allotted to the business philosophy of the owner. Sadly, they lead to so many needless issues that much of the positive experiences of the place can be ruined and its vast potential lost. Its important to say that the immediate staff were wonderful, but there was a limit to what they could do. As stated by most of the reviews, the site of the hotel is really unique and picturesque, being nestled into a cliff and small inlet, with great views and small private access to the sea at its base. Personally I loved the latter, trying for a couple of swims each day. There is a surprising multitude of beautiful fish to snorkel with, including occasional colourful rays, eels, and many others that I have and haven’t seen elsewhere. Getting into the water isn’t the easiest though, given the rocks and waves. A gate at the bottom that was chained and locked most mornings was also a major problem (they promised to deal with this, but only did so the next morning). The suites are all quite nice, though the smaller ones aren’t much use for hanging out in. The decks are small, unshaded and the chairs way too uncomfortable for more than 5-10 min sitting (see below re odors). The first inkling of the misguided management style is right at the beginning with full payment required at booking along with an unorthodox payment system. I was a little concerned we might be getting scammed. They also require additional damage and service fees up front. Upon arrival, we spent a long time in the heat signing a long list of liability waivers (the cliff-side setting and long stone-made stairways have likely led to several injuries or discontent from those that find these tricky or arduous). This is not the ideal site for elderly or out of shape individuals. Among the forms requiring signature are agreements not to bring any alcohol purchased outside of the venue into the hotel or room. You are required to purchase the hotel’s drinks only. There is a mini fridge and wine fridge in each room, but the contents are very expensive (~$250 for a bottle of wine). There’s also a warning that transiently moving items out of these fridges to put something else in will result in being charged for the displaced item. One of the other things they try to convince you of on sign in is to switch from the complimentary “continental” breakfast to a more full “American” breakfast. We aren’t huge breakfast eaters so opted to stay with the continental. This amounted to a small 2-inch bun (sometimes mini croissant) with jam, a “fruit bowl” and a single americano coffee. Where to begin? First, anything extra costs a lot. The coffee, often diluted with chicory, only comes with coffee mate. Milk (?) comes with an extra charge tacked on to your bill. Opting for something fancier like a latte adds another ten dollars. No juice, also extra. The fruit bowl is a 50:50 mix of melon and papaya. I’ve never encountered papaya that looks ripe but is rock hard (3/5 breakfasts eaten). We eventually opted to have most of our meals off-site. The first morning we woke up to the smell of sewage and a stream of ants coming out of one of the light switches. I thought maybe the sewage smell was coming from ‘used’ water being used to water the plants, but no. The 3rd morning we awoke before sunrise due to very intense sewage smell. When we got up and stepped outside it was absolutely disgusting. Management said it was due to their “natural ecological disposal/treatmen method“. Fortunately they managed to ‘postpone’ this method for the remainder of our stay. The place itself is very dead, and the nearby towns very small and quiet, so if you’re looking for entertainment, shopping or night life, this isn’t the place for you. Awesome spot to read or get in some work with a view though. The management offers various excursions via local vendors, but they are marked way up compared to booking directly. They advertised things like “daily yoga and movie nights”, but we learned that the former requires expensive private bookings and the latter never happened. There are two Michelin award plaques at the entrance and on their web site. I’m not sure what these signify (not stars). The reviewers must have been offered a very different experience. This is getting too long, so I recommend reading other reviews for a more detailed list of issues, including issues with cleaning, towels, water rationing etc. The bottom line is the place tends to ruin the experience by nickel and dimming everything despite the high, up front cost and luxury hotel claims. So unfortunate and unnecessary.
291EmilyH (10/5): Amazing 4 days at Zoa! - We spent an amazing 4 days at Zoa! Pictures don't do the resort justice as every view is spectacular! The food and drink on-site far exceeded our expectations and service was impeccable! Marco, Charlie, Victor Jr and Victor Sr were all so helpful and friendly. Concierge service went above and beyond to help coordinate massage and transportation easily. The pool area is an oasis and perfect temp and the private beach area is peaceful and serene. We saw whales from breakfast two of our three mornings. The room was wonderful and private with fresh water with each room cleaning provided. A quick and safe walk to town within 10 minutes to the public beach but why would we leave? Any less than our four days here wouldn't have felt long enough and we will be back, thank you for everything Zoa!

lisagT4768CM (10/5): charming hospitality and great place to eat - though we were staying at another hotel, we were shown around by the enthusiastic and super-friendly manager and we were hugely impressed with the setting and the charming and very personal service we went to the restaurant and received a delightful welcome, having a cocktail with an amazing view overlooking the pool and sea, and then a wonderful dinner, all served with the greatest care . the fish for two people was some of the best we have ever had. this is a place i would recommend extremely highly to anyone Lisa (london, uk)
James (10/5): Perfect my favourite stay to date and Mazunte is so special. - Absolutely everything. I honestly think this is the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The room is incredibly the view even better. Sunrise was absolutely magical not to be missed. The food was amazing, healthy but super tasty. The staff couldn’t do enough for me the whole time I was there but not in an annoying way I felt like I had lots of privacy. The private beach/cove that you were always literally the only person on. You can’t see a soul from here and no one can see you, there’s loads of cool sea life cool crabs and tropical fish to watch. Honestly perfect stay I will be back it made my trip! Such a treat! Ps try the super cold ice baths in the meditation centre place next door. The turtle experience (external company) but booked and paid for through the hotel felt overpriced for what it was. I think a a different company or better communication between the hotel and the tour operator. I think it was supposed to be private and someone was meant to meet me and stay with me. I couldn’t find her then she tried to charge me then I had to wait over a hour then I was part of a really big group the guide didn’t stay with me, no English speaking was really difficult to navigate and took hours. I saw an American English speaking much much smaller group that looked more efficient and much quicker.

Soraya Imen (1/5): - Unfortunately, the General Manager - Salomon Groman - will try to scam you. I would avoid this place if you do not want to experience this. I was asked to put a deposit and this was to be reimbursed once I checked out. It's been 3 weeks that I am trying to get my money back as I noticed the reimbursement was not done when it was supposed to be. The manager does not take any accountability and acts and responds in a very unprofessional and disrespectful way. For 3 weeks he's been saying that it will be reimbursed and unfortunately nothing is done. He laughs at you when you say you will report his wrongdoing. It truly shows how much he cares about his clients.. This is very concerning and I hope no one else has to go through that. Take the time to read the negative reviews on google as they describe perfectly the experience of this place, which is too bad because it has the potential to be great. Unfortunately, the management is fraudulent. It really does not represent the beautiful spirit of Oaxaca.

Even when you put up the “Do Not Disturb” sign, housekeeping still comes in. Dirty, completely wet towels left flat at the bottom of the bathtub were not replaced—and even after reporting this, the same issue happened again the next day. One day, there were tangled long hairs of unknown origin and sticky residue on the bed (none of us has long hair). We suspect that they use the same feather duster or vacuum head to clean the toilet, the floor, and the bed or furniture. A sewage/septic tank smell would occasionally drift up from below the room’s balcony. Although it wasn’t constant, given their hygiene standards, it raises serious concerns about the safety of the water and food. The internet quality is extremely poor. The bottom of the breakfast bread is always burnt. The male concierge will always tell you to your face that you can communicate anytime if there’s a problem and will give you a WhatsApp contact, but in reality you usually have to deal with their chatbot for quite a while first—and you may not even get a response. A “handmade hotel”? What a joke. Other than that, the sunrise and the sea are truly beautiful. (But their beauty would not be diminished at a cleaner hotel.) I do not recommend this hotel, purely for the sake of one’s physical and mental health.

But… We have been traveling all over Mexico, mostly luxury and we love Mexican hospitality. We were both were very much looking forward to ZOA. But ZOA was personally my biggest disappointment in terms of service so far in Mexico. Examples: 1) No greeting when coming in and out during the stay, a Hostel is more welcoming than ZOA. 2) Sometimes there is nobody to open, so you have to ring a bell and deal with an unfriendly, nameless voice. 3) We were never asked, “how is or was your stay”, not even at the end of the stay. 4) staff has a clear attitude of superiority, we didn’t feel welcome at any moment. Only friendly by text on WhatsApp. 5) orders at the restaurant or at the pool were forgotten (towels, drinks), we had to remind them. 6) at our arrival there was nobody to open, it seemed as if nobody expected or even wanted guests. 7) On top we were forced to pay a flat tip of 50 USD at check out, “for the staff”. Our consumption was 150 USD, so 60% tip.

The food at every meal was incredible, whether you opted for traditional Mexican or something more to a European / western palate, you will be very happy. You are also spoilt for choice for mezcal cocktails - two pages of them! The rooms are very comfortable and everything was anticipated fort us whenever we asked for it. Not cheap but stunningly beautiful.

Rooms are spotless, and AC works well. A few major negatives though: The door to our room didn’t lock. We raised this the first day and they looked at it and acknowledged it didn’t lock, but took no steps towards fixing it. So our room was just unlocked the whole stay. Thankfully, the property has a locking gate, but still, we were women traveling and it didn’t feel safe to sleep with the door unlocked and leaving all our stuff in the room when we were out. This is really unacceptable for a property at this price. The room design gives only 50% privacy in the shower. That is, the wall around the shower only covers your bottom half. Hopefully you’re traveling with a romantic partner; I wasn’t and now know my friend a lot better than we ever intended. I know this is a trendy layout for Instagrammable hotels, but it’s really not practical or convenient. And finally, this is advertised as an adults only property, but there was a family staying there with kids, and one looked to be around 10 years old. Oddly, the food at breakfast was great, but dinner was underwhelming, but there are other options within walking distance. I mention negatives so people will know what they’re getting into, but overall, we had a fantastic time. We really loved this hotel and would stay again if we can guarantee a room with a lock on it!

We loved the resort and would highly recommend it. Could have done with a tv (or a screen to chrome cast to), in the room should a guest choose to watch it in the evening. Unfortunately we didn’t know this but there was no swimming allowed at the local beach or any surrounding beaches due to unsafe currents. But the resort itself made up for this.

The a/c was super efficient. The only small downside was the shower was set over a round bathtub. The pool was lovely and we enjoyed doing yoga a few times during our stay. Breakfast was so fresh with great choices. Excellent cocktails and every dish we had for lunch/dinnner was fantastic. The staff were very friendly and helpful annd the hotel and grounds were immaculate.
Ali (7/5): A honest review - Zoa is located in centre of town. Very close to yoga shala and to two beaches one to the right and the other to the left. Also close to shops. So you have everything you need. We did not like the manager salmon advise to go to the beach on the right and not on the left. Because the beach on the right has red flags and very high currents and proved extremely dangerous on our first evening there.

Ate at the restaurant a couple times, for breakfast it was fine but lunch and dinner are way overpriced for what you get. Its walking distance to town which was good. Maia (1/5): Absolutely worst stay of my life. - Nice view Zoa hotel has branded itself as a “luxury” hotel - thus being by far the most expensive hotel in the area. The word “luxury” had absolutely nothing to do with our stay. Where do I start - the poor service? We had to ask for our towels to be changed, and when we did, it didn’t happen unless we asked again and again. How about the fact that NOTHING is included? We were provided with 1 filtered water bottle a day - other than that - everything requires additional payment. I took a (not-very-good) yoga class only to find out that the place next door charges much less - aren’t guests in a “luxury” hotel supposed to get a good deal? This place does everything it can to make an extra dollar at their guests expense. How about waking up to ants biting me in my bed? Screams luxury. None of the doors actually close properly, so expect some luxury bugs on the house. I could go on forever - but I’ve saved the best for last The toilet door - what a masterpiece - you honestly have to see it to believe it - it’s about a meter tall - like a door in a western movie - that just flaps and doesn’t do anything. My partner and I were on our honeymoon - so romantic having to take turns in leaving the room anytime either of us needed to go to the bathroom. Another thing i wanted to mention was the very impersonal service - the manager Solomon didn’t seem to care about anything we asked for, and was extremely rude when we had the audacity to ask to close our bill 15 mins earlier than expected. The front desk was always empty and in order to get in we needed to shout our room number into an intercom every time. When paying this much i would hope/ expect the front desk not to have to ask me for identification 4-5 times a day. This place has no respect for its customers and puts no effort into creating a personal and memorable experience. Zoa hotel is an absolute scam. Do yourselves a favour and find something much cheaper and much better - Mazunte is full of alternatives.

He fulfilled every request to a very high standard, and then some. The food was exquisite. The restaurant was open all day and it felt as though we had our own private chef. The host is extremely welcoming.Food at the restaurant is outstanding. It’s a considerable walk down to the beach but once there it is amazing. After a hot day it was great to refresh in the infinity pool overlooking the ocean. We wished that the internet was a bit better. Finished on the outside of the cabana we stayed in need a bit of a refresh as does the pool.

My partner and I had booked an Airbnb in Mazunte (Casa Indy) ready to go, however “I” booked the flight a day earlier by mistake. that’s on me and I take full ownership for this. As a result, I really wanted to make this extra day really special. I figured a 5star hotel would make up for it. It did! I saved the extra day. This place was romantic for so many reasons. 1. Not a lot of people. 2. No kids 3. Quite places to be in love 4. The views 5. The sun rise and sun set 6. The food 7. The room, the room with everything yummy, spicy and delicious. 8. The private inclosed yard to have room service in. 9. Wales, we could see whales in the ocean from our room laying in bed. 10. The experience. The things that I wish were better but not by the fault of the hotel. When I looked at the pictures I noticed a beautiful bathtub. I even brought special bubble bath to enjoy said bathtub. Mazunte is going through a severe drought and it’s recommended to conserve water. Although this was a shot in the heart for my relaxation, I understood and complied. Also, bugs, be ready and they can’t be avoided. Some small things to look over, you are brave and strong, what’s one big giant spider that your loved one can take care of. This place makes the heart love and the passion ignite. The views, the experience, having your own private beach, the food, the romance. Ugh… it’s a no brainer.
Max (10/5): The perfect stay. - Zoa is an incredible hotel and we couldn't have enjoyed our stay any more. There are only nine rooms, so a lot of the time it feels incredibly private - there are lots of little spots where you can grab a couple of loungers in almost complete privacy. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and each room looks out over the ocean with private views. We got up every morning to experience the sunrise from our balcony. The room was large and simply, but nicely, decorated - all in keeping with the location. We ate at the restaurant several times (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and the food was always excellent. The main reason the stay was so good though is the manager, Salomon. He was incredibly welcoming and friendly, and always on hand to answer any questions we had about the area or to arrange anything (a boat trip, cabs etc.). He really went the extra mile to give us a personal touch, and to make sure our stay was as good as possible. All of the staff were excellent and he obviously runs the hotel brilliantly. Thank you Saloman!

The view was spectacular, the room excellent, the restaurant top, top quality and the private pool divine. Manager Solomon was kind and courteous and helped make our stay memorable. Highly recommended for a special night or 2! Tips: we brought champagne but they only had plastic glasses because of the pool so maybe bring your own. There is a little tienda right at the foot of their driveway for budget water and snacks.

In the room there was no door to the shower as it was open plan, and only a thin half door to the toilet (as the huts are quite small!) so it’s a good job we knew each other well! It’s a shame breakfast wasn’t included in the price.
