Guest Reviews
- Claire (6/5): - Stayed for 1 night.
Bed comfy but it smelt. Not sure if was because the bedding hadn’t dried properly or if it hadn’t been cleaned,
Towels in the bathroom were tatty on the ends and discoloured.
Bath mat
- G (10/5): Great stay - Great stay. So friendly and accommodating. Food is outstanding.
Thank you for making me welcome
- Karen (10/5): - Alice who owns the property goes above and beyond what she needs to do she knows every guest by there 1st name had a meal in the Cantonese restaurant (which alice runs) on Friday and the food was 1st class breakfast there a choice a good choice all the staff are very friendly beds very comfortable and clean , showers nice and hot decor could do with a up date but to be honest I wasn’t there to look at the decor there was a group of 6 and we would definitely go back
- Stephen (10/5): Hidden Gem - Found this place and wasn't sure what to expect but had a wonderful stay and will be staying again every time in the area.
The hotel has a Chinese restaurant sa well as a traditional pub.
The food was amazing and Irecommend everyone to try the taster menu (2 main taters for £17.50).
Staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
- Verified traveler (6/5): 1 night stay - Staff very friendly, food in Chinese Restaurant excellent but breakfast very average. Bar very dull.
Room very much in need of TLC. Although it had been well cleaned it needed a complete overhaul and the corridor outside was pitch black until you reached it’s end when the light automatically came on. Not what we expected for the price.
- Martyn (10/5): - Very good breakfast included. Excellent restaurant on site for evening meal.
- Martin (8/5): Great stay - Alice was a great hostess very accommodating too
- Melvyn (8/5): - This was perfect for a one night stay. At £78 per night I guess that’s a mid price range for pub accommodation. It was a lovely spacious, clean room.
My only criticism would be that the whole accommodation area would benefit from from some redecoration as it looked a little tired.
- Winnie (8/5): - Owner was very friendly and helpful. We had a chinese meal in the restaurant which was excellent too. We did have difficulties finding the property as satnav took us to another of the same name. Also the google map had a picture if a neighbouring house which i have notified that the address needs to be corrected also.
- Anthony (10/5): Highly recommended - Welcoming and friendly atmosphere with a very comfortable room. Excellent Cantonese restaurant too.
- AUTOMATIC FLARE SYSTEMS (10/5): - Very friendly and amazing food
I stay once a month when working in the area
- Rory (10/5): Everything I needed - The stay was everything i needed it to be so I can't fault it. Alice was always about and very welcoming and they provided a great breakfast in the morning. Provided everything I wanted and so not a bad word to say, so thank you
- Rachel (8/5): - A very warm and welcoming greeting from Alice, who is a lovely lady. Good food, good range of ales at the bar. Some tlc required in the accommodation.
- Anne (4/5): - Bathroom and bedding clean. Some good touches(toothbrushes and razors if needed).Ample parking and lovely hanging baskets.
Mattress needed replacing as did some lightbulbs in corridor and lighting in corridor didn’t always come on.Staircarpet grubby.Decor tired.Stains on bedroom carpet.Cooked breakfast very greasy. No cereals. Will not return.Very disappointed.
- Malcolm (10/5): - Highly recommended
Lovely hotel with brilliant staff. Quiet location and will return when next in the area

Great host and hospitality.
Fantastic Chinese restaurant and breakfast next morning. Definitely one to be recommended.
- Wayne (10/5): Great hotel with a excellent Cantonese restaurant - Very friendly staff , room was adequately equipped , bathroom was good , the Cantonese restaurant was really good with the food being excellent would gladly stay here again
- Daniel (10/5): A great stopover location! - Late arrival and early out but was still welcomed by Alice the owner. Breakfast was offered and even provided at an earlier time than normally given, for which I was very grateful. A great cooked breakfast kicked off my morning and soon I was on my way. This was a perfect location to break up a long North to South journey. Very pleasant indeed. Sad that I missed out on what looked like a super Chinese dining experience for an evening meal! And just a few mins of the A1M
- Verified traveler (10/5): Enjoyable Stay - Clean rooms, well kept, friendly owner & staff. Good food.
- Karl (10/5): - stayed 3 to 4 times now great place
Alice the host is great very friendly

- Verified traveler (10/5): Comfortable one night stay - Very nice lady who looked after us very well, lovely pub , room was good apart from being to hot for my liking luckily two huge windows we could open for some cool air , bed was huge and comfortable, shower was ace , breakfast was great , only small gripe I would have is the pub only stays open to 10pm
- Karl (10/5): - Great host and food as usual

- Josefa (8/5): - The room was clean. Curtains definitely needed to be changed. You could hear people next-door.
The food was excellent and tasty. Customer service was great.
- Paul (10/5): Stayed for Thirsk races - Room was spotless.Alice was an excellent host, she even went out of her way to drive us back into the town centre to collect our car.The breakfast was lovely, can’t fault anything. Will definitely book again next time we attend the races.
- JOHN (10/5): - We were met with a warm welcome and shown to our very clean room. Breakfast was also good.

- Chanelle (10/5): - The staff were very friendly and the room was comfortable. It was convenient to drive to other locations of North Yorkshire and visit various places.
- MD Amaan (10/5): - Great stay for a short while.
- David (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Lovely staff and such a warm greeting from Alice. Great place even if a little different, local pub to one side and a Cantonese restaurant on the other. The food was exeptional and the room spacious and well equipped. All in all just a very pleasant experience, you really do leave thinking you have made new friends. I will be staying again.
- Amanda (10/5): - We had an excellent stay at the Nags Head. Located on the edge of the Moors, Pickhill is a beautiful quiet village with excellent walks straight from the car park. Alice and her team were so friendly and welcoming. Room was clean and comfortable. Our evening meal (chinese food) was excellent as was the English breakfast. The locals in the bar were friendly which gave the place a great atmosphere. We will definately be back and highly recommend.
- Stephnie (8/5): A comfortable night - Surprised to find food was Cantonese & The Naggs head is no longer a pub.. should have read booking info better!
- Mike (10/5): A happy smiling welcome - On arrival was met by Alice, a bubbly character, full of energy and a welcoming smile. Took me to my room which was lovely and clean. Ate in the restaurant food was excellent. Staff very attentive. Food reasonably priced. Restaurant got busy very quickly a testament to the standard and care of all the staff. Now on my list of places to stay when in North Yorkshire.
- James Andrew (10/5): - Very welcoming host, nice big rooms and a Chinese restaurant on site for evening meal or a pub also linked to the property. Breakfast was nice and plenty of parking available. Would recommend pre-ordering a taxi if wanting to go into Ripon or Thirsk as the location is a bit out of the way.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice pub in a quiet village location. Very friendly welcome. Great food (Chinese food menu).
Our only issue was creaking floorboards, so we were aware of all the early risers in the morning.
- Andrew (10/5): Amazing gem of a place - Amazing place and the host can't do enough too help
- Ian (10/5): - Great staff could not do a enough for us we had a one night stay after golf.great food .
- Jeffrey (10/5): B&B - Service with a smile. Very comfortable room.
- Naomi (10/5): Good value, clean and welcoming - I stayed in the family room which was large and spacious. Very clean with good size en-suite. Alice was so helpful and friendly. She takes the trouble to remember all guests by their first names. Free parking behind hotel. Peaceful, comfortable and would definitely stay here again. Cooked English breakfast was delicious!
- Kevin (10/5): Little gem and incredible food - Had an amazing time, food was incredible and Alice and the team made us feel very welcome can’t wait to book again.
- Ann (6/5): - Good car parking and owners very flexible and accommodating.
Rooms are very dated and clean but not spotless. Breakfast was poor. No fruit juices or cereal until we asked for it. Cooked breakfast served on cold plates and served as soon as you sat down, so not exactly fresh cooked. Just meat and eggs, no tomatoes or mushrooms.
- Norman (8/5): - very friendly helpful staff, comfortable bed, clean room and good breakfast
- Barbara (10/5): Short break in North Yorkshire - We had a couple of nights at the Nag's head. Alice, the proprietor, was very friendly and the room was comfortable. Breakfast was very generous, with gluten-free food available. Highly recommended.

- Peter (10/5): Pickhill Gem close to everything ….. - Alice gives you a warm welcome, the team are friendly and the accommodation and food are to a good standard.
- Kevin (10/5): Nice hotel and owner - Rooms a little dated but what makes this hotel a gem is the friendliness of the owner and the quality of the food in the restaurant.
- Lesley (10/5): Great size family room in friendly surroundings - The family room was generous . It was clean.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
The food served is Cantonese and was delicious.
The pub area was separate to the restaurant area, which made it relaxing and enjoyable. The pub area is friendly and not rowdy.
I would definitely recommend this accommodation.
- Pat (8/5): - Very friendly welcome. Comfortable bed. Very convenient location off A1 for Ripon & Fountains Abbey, and Thirsk.
- Andrea (10/5): Excellent - Lovely large and comfortable room and the shower is excellent great water pressure, food was great from the restaurant and the hosts are lovely would highly recommend this place would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We were made very welcome on arrival, but an extractor fan created lots of noise and vibration. We were moved to another room which was much better, but the vibration could be felt until the fan was turned off around 2215.
- Nicola (10/5): - Nice and welcoming upon arrival, with a nice, comfortable room as well as friendly staff. Breakfast was served in a timely manner, was cooked breakfast and option of tea or coffee. One didn’t feel hurried and good respect for privacy.
- Daniel (10/5): Great - Was right near the polar express train and the is a lovely place. The food was nice and the owner was friendly and very nice. Would stay again, the food was also good.
- Jeffrey (10/5): B & B - Nice room, friendly welcome
- alison (8/5): Good pub with good Chinese food. - I have stayed here before, pre covid, food is good, rooms are clean but the back of the bathroom taps could have done with a good seeing to!! My only complaint was that breakfast is served from 8-10am, which was too late for me, so they said it wasn't a problem and then could do the 7.30am that I needed. Got down ready for breakfast, not a soul about, finally left at 7.45am to get breakfast elsewhere. Got a text at 8am to say they were running late. I wouldn't have minded if they'd said the night before that it was too early, I'd have planned my morning around getting breakfast elsewhere, but to be told it was ok, and then for no one to turn up! It's ok if you're travelling for pleasure but I was working and needed things to run smoothly.
- Wayne (10/5): - Very nice place with great hospitality
- Laura (8/5): - A friendly personal service
- WILLIAM (8/5): over night stay - Could do with extending the menu as not a lover of foreign food , but the stay was ok but the toilet seat was far to low and the floor boards creaked badly in the next door room , otherwise a good night sleep was had .
- Tahir (10/5): Great Service, comfortable ample parking - Room was immaculately clean, the bed splendid and the staff welcoming and cheerful. Even at busy times they were unfailingly helpful and genuinely interested to help.
The breakfast service
was especially
efficient and well-
organised.
Lots of parking
- Emma (10/5): - Great stay, very friendly and welcoming
- Scott (4/5): - Too many stairs
- Liam (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff, nice quiet area, easy on-site parking. Great breakfast
- JOHN (10/5): Great hotel & restaurant. - Friendly, helpful service from Alice and her friends & family.
Great food in the restaurant in the evening ditto the included breakfast.
Highly recommended 👌
- ian (10/5): Give it a try. - Really great to stay with Alice, her son Sam and the other local staff who were friendly and catered for our every need. And the food was great too. ten out of ten.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Chinese restaurant with rooms - Restaurant with a bar and rooms. Drinks were hotel prices and I thought that the Chinese Restaurant could have been cheaper! Bedroom OK but basic.
- L (8/5): Great stay! - Wonderful 3 night stay. Alice is a great host and made us feel very welcome. Quiet location so you need a vehicle or bicycles to access e.g. shops. Nice Cantonese restaurant and pub.
- Alastair (6/5): - The Chinese restaurent housed in the same building as the pub was excellent. Breakfast choices however were rather limited and bacon, eggs etc were never hot. We would have preferred to wait for it to be cooked to order rather than finding it on the table when we arrived. Mattress was a spring construction and past its best and the noise from creaky floorboards could be heard in adjoining rooms.
- Darren (8/5): Lovely Place With The Warmest Of Welcomes. - We stayed for a visit to the races. The room was clean and spacious. The place is well outside Thirsk but was perfect for us as I was driving. We ate at the Cantonese restaurant on site and the food was amazing. Alice and her team gave us the warmest of welcomes and could do enough. If there was a slight down side, the was a quite a lot of noise from above in the morning from general movement. It wasn't an issue for me but lighter sleepers may be an issue. But next time we're in Thirsk, we'll be coming back.
- Robert (10/5): - an older property in the quaint village of Pickhill. The staff were very friendly and catered for all our needs.
- James (10/5): Excellent stay!! - Lovely owner, place was very nice and clean. Will be back to try the food too.
- Lee (10/5): - Very nice stay
- David (10/5): Great weekend - We enjoyed a great weekend at the Nags Head. The rooms were really goodand very clean. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the staff were really friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend them
- Joanne (10/5): Excellent and most enjoyable stay - When we arrived at the hotel we were not sure if we were going to like it. The actual pub was more like a takeaway but we sat at a table next to the open fire. My husband was in his element keeping the fire going. We later had a meal in the restaurant. Wow, the food was excellent and great service especially Alice, she is a superb host and can’t do enough for you. Had a great nights sleep in a really comfy bed. The cooked breakfast was perfect and again Alice was on hand to make sure we had everything we wanted. Really enjoyed our stay.
- Chris (10/5): Good old pub with a Chinese restaurant - Nice pub with friendly , helpful staff - a locals pub and the restaurant has a good range of Chinese food at reasonable prices - I enjoyed my short stay but not disabled friendly as the stairs to the bedrooms are very steep
- John (10/5): 1st class - Absolutely first class once again 👌
- Nicholas (6/5): Room OK .... - Property seems to focus principally on its Cantonese restaurant. Comfortable double bedded room and large bathroom - clean but freezing upon 8pm arrival on a cold evening. I was able to put the heating on myself later but it wasn't much of a welcome. No wifi signal in room.
Breakfast was dreadful which the proprietor did apologise for on departure but it was a prepaid, non-refundable booking.
- Dianne (10/5): Nags head - Great value for money
Clean and comfortable rooms
Friendly and helpful staff
- Rosemary (8/5): Our stay at the Nags Head - Our hostess Alice warmly welcomed us and made us feel at home, we stayed 5 nights and felt sad to leave , the nag's head is positioned half way between Ripon and Thirsk at Pickshill making it easy to get to Bedale, Leyburn and many other places I would recommend it
- Doreen (10/5): I would recommend The Nags Head - Easy to find, a bit further out of Thirsk than I thought, but nice place and Alice and co friendly. Our room was clean and large with bath and shower. Very nice breakfast too.
- Heather (8/5): - Great week spent visiting our new Grandson. Alice made us very welcome. Clean room and very good shower. Tasty breakfast and Cantonese restaurant very good sit in and takeaway Wil definitely stay again.
- Wendy (10/5): - The Nags Head deserves 5 stars across the board.
Cleanliness outstanding. Rooms stunning. Staff so friendly. The Cantonese restaurant exemplary.
Alice the owner is so friendly and helpful and if anyone deserves success in business it’s Alice.
We will be back for sure . Thank you
