• Trevor (8/5): Good location for a break in York - Our one night stay was very good value for money and the cooked breakfast superb.Very friendly host.Not too far to walk into the city centre along the riverside.
• Gillian (6/5): - Room was very clean and the employees were nice. Breakfast and food served in the pub was average. It's a manageable walk to the centre. It was a little loud and cramped, but this was to be expected booking a small room in a pub. The bathroom could use an update, also, to be expected in an older building. I knocked off points because we said we didn't want housekeeping, but they entered our room anyway. This is a boundary that should be respected.

Walkable distance to the city centre but there is a bus stop about 5 minutes away and taxis are plentiful. I would definitely recommend.
• Carlos (8/5): - Ups: centered, convenient, free parking, quiet, Victorian style, walking distance from the shambles and major attractions and some other things. The cons: open until 3 pm, some weird noises from the walls, thin walls and you can hear your neighbors, the teapot was dirty. The Ibar it’s open until 11. but at the end it’s a really nice place to stay.

• Sally (4/5): Very dirty and rundown establishment - The cleanliness of this establishment was absolutely disgusting, dust all over the four poster bed frame, the bathroom blind was absolutely filthy and there were used earplugs and a plaster underneath the bedside table. The furniture was covered in stains and we were unable to use the shower properly as it was very loosely attached to the wall. Also upon arriving we were greeted by a young lad who was basically running the place alone and wasn't very professional or at all concerned with making sure we were happy. The only positive thing I could say about this establishment is, the location isn't bad. If you want a clean and comfortable stay in York, avoid this place!!

Close to the riverwalk into York, which takes around 20 minutes to city and 30 to train station. Everything works well including hot shower. Above pub's snooker room, but I didn't find noisy. Nor road noise. Bed comfortable. Simple but well-served breakfast. No fuss check-in. Very good value.
• DENISE (10/5): - WE TOTALLY ENJOYED OUR STAY AT THE LIGHTHORSEMAN - HAD A LOVELY QUITE ROOM WITH LOVELY REFURBISHED LARGE BATHROOM WHICH WAS SUPER CLEAN BED COMFORTABLE - HAD ONE BREAKFAST FIRST MORNING WAS LOVELY -IN WALKING DISTANCE OF CENTRE OF YORK, BUT ALSO ON A BUS ROUTE WHICH WE USED A LOT COS MY HUSBAND WAS RECOVERING FROM SURGERY & CANCER TREATMENT, SO DIDNT WANT TO DO A LOT OF WALKING , IT WAS PERFECT FOR THE BUS & ONLY £2.00 INTO TOWN EACH - IT WAS A LOVELY STAY & WOULD CERTAINLY RETURN. THANK YOU TO ALL THE STAFF, BARMAIDS WERE LOVELY & OWNER DAN SUPER FRIENDLY CHEERS XXXXXXX
• David (10/5): Traditional style but enjoyable and convenient. - We didn't eat as we had commitments but the beds were comfortable with duvets that should be warm in winter.

• Mark (6/5): - This is a budget hotel so bear this in mind. The property is not modern which is not an issue but does need to be cleaner. The staff member was very polite and check in was quick. The parking was good and the location only about 10 mins walk into centre. Did not eat here so can’t comment on that.

The bed was comfortable and we got a good night’s sleep. The bar is well priced with a good selection of alcoholic drinks and the hotel is only a short walk from the main attractions in York . Would definitely stay again
• Louise (8/5): Anniversary trip - Lovely 3 night stay, we had double room with en suit which was a good size room, room was clean and comfortable and we slept well the bathroom was a little tired looking and could do with a freshen up We only ate breakfast one morning which was nice cooked breakfast and cereal and fruit on offer Plenty of parking spaces which are free Perfect location only 10/15min walk along the river into the city, if you walk along the main road there’s several bars and restaurants along rout we found a lovely Chinese restaurant Shi Shang great value and big portions Overall a lovely trip with so much to do
• JOELLE (10/5): - A lovely beautiful pub hotel, cozy, comfortable, pleasantly friendly.
• Gavin (6/5): - It's basic accommodation. Very dated throughout, needs a lick of paint and new carpets.. Bathroom was quite good however and very clean. Bedsheets and towels had some stains. If you have a room facing the road, take earplugs or your sleep will be interrupted frequently. Overall for the price I was happy. I just needed a place to put my head for the night. Would not recommend for a long stay however.

• Mark (10/5): A good base for a decent price. - Really enjoyed this hotel as a base for visiting York, rooms are above a bar but no problem with noise, all a little dated but clean with a comfy bed 10 min walk along the river to York centre, would use again if visiting York.

Cheap drinks, great food - Me and my boyfriend stayed for 3 nights, first thing we noticed was the lighthorseman is a very good distance from town- out of the way and quiet but a very short walk (10~ minutes) either by road or alongside the canal, the latter of which made for a lovely start to each morning we were there. Not far from the train station either. Spacious and clean room, toilet and shower were pristine and the bathroom was well-ventilated. Lovely little brew station on the bed side table. Only possible complaint was the telly, which couldnt change channels so we were stuck watching love island and tennis, but that didnt have any effect in our enjoyment of the hotel room. They offer breakfast for a very reasonable price, as are the drinks at the bar. The food was great, we recommend the steak & ale pie and the chicken tikka masala. All in all, very happy, lovely pub to stay in.
• markehp21 (10/5): A solid budget option in a great location - Context: Early 30s British solo traveller, 2 night stay in the single room booked via Agoda, for visiting friends in York. The location of the Lighthorseman is fantastic - 15 minutes walk into the centre of York and free parking on site. The room was small and did have a few signs of wear and tear as is to be expected, but was spotless and had everything I needed. Wi-Fi is included and the bed was comfy enough. There is some noise due to the pub, its location on a main road and from the Saniflow systems in the bathrooms, however this is to be expected and didn't really affect my stay - maybe something to consider if you are a light sleeper. My only slight issue is that there was no handle on the inside of the bathroom door which made it hard to close/lock - I was a bit worried that steam from the shower might set off the smoke alarm but fortunately it was fine! Cannot comment on the food as I didn't eat there due to other plans. The value for money for me was incredible - for the dates I had booked this was the cheapest non-hostel option in York by a mile, coming in at less than half the cost of a Travelodge/Premier Inn. Assuming the pricing was similar next time around I'd stay here again.

• caroline (8/5): - Great value 1 night stay. Check in was quick and easy with the friendly barman. The hotel is a 10minute walk along the river to the city centre. Bed was conformable, had a great nights sleep. Nice shower in the morning. The only reason I can't give full marks is due to the overpowering drainage smell in the bathroom. The bathroom was clean but unfortunately there seems to be an issue with the drains. Other than that, I would recommend this hotel for a great value bed for the night. Can't comment on the food and drink as we ate in the city centre. We would certainly return.
• Angela (8/5): - The accommodation has free parking and was convenient to walk into the city. When we were there there was no evening meals available so we had to walk to get a meal. Towels were lovely and clean but really hard and scratchy. Shower was like warm and curtains are damaged so don’t close properly

Unfortunately we had a tiny room, very clean, but it just happened to directly above the pool room and was so noisy. The bathroom was also very small and nowhere to put your toiletries and the toilet was a Saniflow also very noisy. We sat in the dining area one evening for a drink and the tables were sticky. Great location and veryconvenient for walking around York. Free parking.
• brisvegas1954 (4/5): Much better options nearby - We were staying nearby and The Lighthorseman looked promising so we decided to try it for dinner but unfortunately it was a disappointment. After arrival we were shown to the dining room and given menus. We waited for someone to take our order but after some time we asked the lady who showed us to our table and were told we needed to order at the bar. I ordered the Chicken, Mushroom and Leek pie for my husband and the chicken skewers for myself. A short time later the young man at the bar came to our table to explain that they were out of chicken skewers so I chose the same meal as my husband. When my husband ordered the drinks - a beer for himself and a Pinot Grigio for me, he was told they were out of the Pinot Grigio so I then chose a Rose which they were also out of. He asked for some other wine options but these were also unavailable but eventually was able to get a 200ml bottle of Prosecco. While we were waiting for our meals there was an issue with some ladies at another table who were upset with their meals. Our meals were tasty but we had eaten at a pub close by the night before and had been extremely happy with the food, service, atmosphere and drinks there. The Lighthorseman’s atmosphere, service and variety of wines was a letdown. There are much better options close by.
• Warren (8/5): - Friendly traditional Inn, good full English breakfast. Great location to walk into the City along the river, free parking also a bonus. Rooms are comfortable but the age of the building perhaps explains why the bathrooms and showers are dated. Enjoyed my second stay there and outside of building has been freshly painted.
• X6176HVpeterh (10/5): You won't find better - From arriving to leaving, everything was excellent. When we arrived the car parking situation was a little unclear. However the owner of the Hotel came out and explained everything. He even carried our case inside for us. The check in was simplicity itself and we were escorted to our room. Breakfasts etc. were explained and we were left to unpack. The rooms are spotless, very well equipped and a pleasure to be in. The hotel itself is a bit of a star in its own right. Still boasting features from the mid 1800s, every corner reveals another delight. Breakfast leaves you wanting for nothing. Evening meals are served and the standards are also very high. Every member of staff we had dealings with were attentive and extremely helpful. For those wishing to explore York, those attractions are a very short walk away. This place is definitely 10/10 and we will be heading there again.

Inn in walking distance from city centre. Quiet overnight. Locked up our bags for our last day exploring. We didn't eat there it was well patronised when we returned.

• E7396MVjohnm (8/5): Good value - I arrived and was quickly booked in and shown my room.The room was clean and en suite..it was not a big room,but managed to get a four poster ,wardrobe,dressing table in with room to move around .the menu was pub grub,but looked ok to me..I went down for breakfast the next morning .i ordered the full English it was really good. To much for me though. Next morning I ordered bacon and eggs instead as I wanted to go out. Not lie down till I recovered lol.I will book again if I go back to York

• Linda (10/5): Solo Welsh Woman visits York - Despite being very much an English pub facility the people were very friendly & helpful, the rooms were comfortable & well apportioned. The pubs position just a few meters away from the river walk into the city was a real bonus. It encouraged me to walk rather than rely on public transport, although this was frequent with a nearby bus stop, and I found lovely parts of the city that I may have missed otherwise. I would recommend this hotel to family & friends.

Bar is a typical old pub with fantastic features. Beer garden was really nice. Think the hotel is going through some updating and it’s needed but would stay again for sure

Staff very friendly but lacking knowledge of simple facts like how to synchronise the TV as it didn't work when we checked in. Bed was quite comfy and room was quiet, considering we were on top of the pub and by the main road. Cleanliness very poor, the carpet was incredibly dirty and the brush toilet holder was in really poor condition, all rusty. This cost less than £5 to replace it Overall, if you are in a budget, the place is OK but it could certainly be improved by owners I can't comment on food and drinks as we didn't consume anything. There are amazing places in York centre where to have meals and drinks
• Scott (6/5): Good location, room needs some upgrading! - Hotel is rather central just outside the city walls, good location, pub is a typical old town pub, rooms are a bit dated and need a facelift and some TLC but cant complain about the price paid.

Very walkable to city centre but also had some nice cafes around and the pub itself was lovely too! Would definitely recommend for the convenience and good nights sleep!

• Verified traveler (8/5): A nice reasonably priced bed for the night - I was looking for a reasonably priced place for an overnight stay for a work trip without spending over £100.00 on some of the "cheep hotel chains rooms". This little nugget was just what was needed, a nice comfy bed, ease of access, polite and friendly staff. When I asked for suggestions on where to eat as their kitchen was closed and it was spot on!

• 60bobm (10/5): Overnight stay - Had a lovely stay the room was value for money and freshly decorated, Dan was very helpful the breakfast was very nice especially the black pudding, very convenient for the barbican centre and only a ten minute walk to the city centre. Would recommend

• abigail (8/5): Very comfortable budget stay - Absolutely perfect for what we needed, budget hotel that is clean and comfortable with parking included. Very convenient location and friendly staff. Only downside was the television didn't work and the shower head was broken.
• Timothy (4/5): Overhaul required - Overall filthy with old dirty cobwebs, four poster dusty, tired room in need of a total overhaul and redecorating. The only positive was on check out we were offered a 50% refund with no quibbles.

• Lesley (8/5): - It is a great stopover. Rooms are above the pub. Not a problem. It is on a busy road so you do get traffic noise. Didn’t get to catch breakfast as we left early. Nice staff.

• 275seanr (8/5): Great base to explore - Popping up to York to see my son who is at Uni and lives close by. Solo stay so chose the pub as convenient. Very warm welcome from Dan, room was fine. Pub itself was great - some of the historic bits still remain: hasn’t been completely ripped out by a thoughtless brewery! Parking on site was a bonus
