Guest Reviews
- Robert (9/5): Great for families with children - Lovely gardens and outdoor facilities, friendly staff, good food. Nothing
- Lindsay (10/5): Staff was friendly and very helpful. I required a late check out and it was arranged at no extra charge. This was so app -
- Claire (10/5): Majestic weekend breakaway! - Magnificent mountain views. Highly recommend Swiss cabin! Delicious meals!!! Fun activities...tennis, bowls hiking, squash, horse riding, table tennis, finger board & pool plus a swimming pool. Friendly & helpful staff. Fantastic long weekend breakaway. Leaving
- Christelle (10/5): -
- Willie (10/5): Loved each moment. A truly remarkable place to stay. Been telling my friends and others that it certainly is a tick box - Everything! It was an absolute pleasure staying there. Loved the huge tree work seating below it. Will certainly be back! Nothing.
- JoeCBansteadUK (8/5): Decent Old School Property - This review is relatively objective being my 19th road trip, staying at 17 properties over a 42 night period.
I stayed solo for two nights in February.
Easily found immediately off the main road with adequate parking once the overflow area is used.
A real old school property, which I enjoy.
Friendly, helpful staff throughout. A system reservation problem was quickly resolved by them.
I stayed in a large, well equipped, clean, cool and comfortable rondavel near the pool. Unfortunately it was also adjacent to the main road, which became noisy in the morning - for those wishing to sleep in I would recommend a unit away from the road.
Sport DSTV was a bonus.
Hot water is provided by traditional ‘donkey’ furnaces. It took two attempts with reception to a, convince them that I had only tepid water and b that their attempts at a fix had failed. Sorted out in the end, but could be a major irritation to some.
Well maintained and relaxing grounds.
Food standard not great, with the pricing reflecting this.
Very well maintained hiking paths in the surrounding hills with a route map provided.
Reasonable room prices.
Overall a decent stay, but unless food standard improves won’t be returning.
- manorfarmnf (10/5): A wonderful combination of service and setting. - This is a beautiful historic inn with comfortable rooms and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The staff are all exceptional in their customer service and friendliness. The food is delicious in the comfortable dining room.
The mountain setting offers some delightful walks from the hotel. All in all, a wonderful experience.
- Willem (9/5): -
- Gill (10/5): Quite a few walking paths. The butterfly sanctuary 200 m up the road. - Wonderful staff, very friendly and efficient Lovely to be served morning and afternoon tea at o extra cost None

- drixon477371 (8/5): Pleasant tranquil stay at Eight Bells - It was a nostalgic return to the Eight Bells having stayed there 30 years ago! The setting is exquisite - set on the Robinson Pass and the hotel still retains its old world charm. The staff were warm and friendly and we had a very pleasant stay.
- Jeanette (9/5): -
- Knysnagirl_12 (6/5): Great venue/Awful food!,, - This was our fifth annual visit. The hotel and grounds are beautiful and the surrounding areas outstanding.
However the food is really awful. With nowhere else nearby to eat we were forced to dine in the restaurant in the evening.
Spring rolls came as 2 cigarette size shapes filled with cooked carrots and broccoli, obviously leftovers from the lunch menu.
My husband ordered Cape Malay Curry. It was again obviously made from lunch leftovers which was chicken pie as the chicken was shredded mixed with rice and a spoonful of curry powder. No sauce and absolutely no taste of Cape Malay. It was disgusting. We complained to the waiter to no avail. The chef not interested.
I’m sorry to say we won’t go back unless we hear that the food has improved. Such a pity as it was our favourite getaway, although frankly the food was never excellent but at least it was edible.
- Joanna (8/5): - I had such a peaceful stay and really enjoyed the hiking trail
- David (7/5): Great venue, need a little love & care ( and maintenance) - Close to the wedding venue There was a permanent issue with hot water, had to get reception involved every day to get the hot water working
- L5942WPdavew (8/5): Old Style Country Retreat - Situated at the foot of the Robinson pass, this hotel is an "old fashioned" country retreat. The staff are very welcoming and the ambience is very relaxed.
- gardengnome49 (8/5): Maybe not quite 4* - Lovely location
Wifi in log cabins poor. Shortage of sockets. Breakfast OK. Complementary tea - but pay for a piece of cake?
- Sally (9/5): - Beautiful area, lots to do, facilities were great Could have done with a fridge in the bedrom
- Kevin (6/5): -
- eybers (10/5): -
- Anthony (7/5): I love the place and despite some shortcomings, would probably go there again. - Breakfasts were good, both cooked and continental.
The location is outstanding unless you want to party. It is rural large, grassed area with heaps of trees and plants. There are some walks (signposted), ranging from easy to challenging (try the red route). I used to visit here when I was young (60 years ago) and I was not disappointed by what I found in March 2026. The property has been developed but honours the feeling and tradition of the old site. I visited after living for 30 years in Australia and had not been there since about 1965 while I was still living in South Africa. The bed in my cottage was hard and uncomfortable, felt like it had been there since the Ruiters from Ruyterbos came to town. Dinner was unimaginative, like South African meals from the 1960's, '70's. Meals were wholesome though meat, pumpkin, carrots and peas.

- Tim (8/5): Lovely stay in beautiful surroundings with delicious food, we’ll be back! - All was lovely, the food was particularly good and a pleasant surprise after some of the restaurants we had eaten at on our trip. The cottage was great, the linen very good, the swimming pool a great asset. We would have liked to have been given sandwiches with the tea at 4pm. Slight disappointment!
- David (10/5): A place to cherish and revisit when you can! Many thanks to all staff. Worth travelling 6000 miles!! - It is a remarkable place to stay. Brilliant on all counts!!Food, room , staff of the highest order.
Wonderful! As was said a taste of heaven!! Nothing to say here!! All brilliant!!
- Sandy (7/5): We enjoyed our overnight stay. The staff were very friendly and quite accommodating. - It’s a nice property. It has beautiful grounds. The staff were great. We sent a message ahead to say we would be getting in late evening and would be leaving very early the next day. They made sure that the dining room was open when we arrived and they also made us breakfast takeaways for our early departure. We appreciated their willingness to make our stay great!
- Francois (8/5): Really enjoyed it. Will definitely go back again - Location and it’s history The room’s carpet could do with a clean
- Booksearcher (10/5): A little gem at the foot of the mountains. - We stopped for a light lunch and really liked the shady veranda and gardens. It was very peaceful and the food was good. We’d certainly visit again if we were in the area.
- Bertine (8/5): -
- Mark (10/5): - One of my favourite places in the world. The history, tranquillity and most of all the mountains

- Henri-Xavier (9/5): -
- markw788 (8/5): Wonderful two day break away from the noise and rush of the city. - My wife and I spent two nights at the Inn to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversay.
We enjoyed our very clean, well equiped and light large room.
We were provided with a wonderful breakfast each morning that kept us going through the day.
During the late afternoon, we took a stroll down to the forest, stopping to admire the very well behaved horses on the way.
- Lesley (9/5): Beautiful and peaceful. Ideal for families. - Staff excellent. They swooped out the one room for a larger room which was most appreciated.
Beautiful location. Will be back Nothing
- Claire (10/5): A step back in time - It was like stepping back in time. Very peaceful surroundings. We enjoyed all the amenities & hiking.
- Mandy (8/5): Lovely stay, accommodating staff, lovely cabin. Pool was sparkling; grounds exceptionally well kep - Breakfast was good, staff great Nothing
- Mark (9/5): A wonderful short stay getaway. - The breakfast was exceptional!
Buffet continental as well as a perfectly cooked breakfast! The dinner menu was a little dated and the food was bland.
Although the dinner menu says the meals are prepared fresh, we believed this to be questionable after my experiance ordering the chicken schnitzel which arived at the table over done, dry and totaly tough.
- Carla (10/5): Amazing place! - The rooms are spotless, the bed is very comfortable, and housekeeping comes every day. The staff are incredibly friendly and always attentive to your needs. We spent New Year’s there with our family and were looked after exceptionally well. The restaurant offers a great variety of food, including delicious vegetarian options, and breakfast was just as impressive.
Highly recommended!
- Karin (8/5): Perfect Getaway venue if yoy want peace and quiet and being surrounded by nature -
- JENNY (10/5): we were really spoilt my sister and I, and wish that we couldve stayed 2 days longer !!!! - we had outstanding service - especially from gerhald !!!!!
- charles (8/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): It was a very pleasant stay. - The breakfast and the food overall was good.
The bedroom was very comfortable and spacious.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The location was beautiful. There was no entertainment at night like bingo or quizzes.
New Years Eve was a little disappointing.

- Yvonne (8/5): -
- Peter (10/5): Super stay would love to return. - Quality accommodation with attentive and polite staff Shower in the rondavelle outdated and in need of replacement.
- Marlene (10/5): - Excellent facilities outside. Our family made use of all the sport facilities. Something for everyone. Extremely well kept grounds. Very friendly and helpful staff. We had such a great time. For the second time we had problems with hot water. Such a waste of water to have it run for so long.
A small bar fridge in the room will be helpful.
- Heiner (8/5): Es waren drei gute Tage!

- reviewer133 (10/5): Tranquil setting - We stayed 5 nights in the Swiss Village and had a wonderful relaxing time. There was no end to the attentiveness of the staff who saw to our every need. Our party was aged ~40 and 70+, and there was plenty to do for everyone. From lounging by the pool, hikes up the mountain, lawn bowls, billiards, darts, the reading room, tea on the veranda, and watching the rugby in the bar. We also enjoyed the butterfly sanctuary across the road. The breakfasts and dinners were top notch and we very much enjoyed the cheesecake, milk tart etc every afternoon. The rooms were lovely, with views of the grounds & mountain, many birds to see, as well as the resident horses, dogs, cats and chickens. We thoroughly enjoyed our time recharging in this beautiful mountain inn.
- Barbara (9/5): It’s such a beautiful place to stay. And Gerhald is a fantastic host! -
- Martina (10/5): -
- Linda (8/5): Generally apart from the evening meal all was excellent & very comfortable - It was a lovely relaxing stay & the platter we had at lunchtime on the Sunday was fantastic . The grounds are beautiful to walk in & the chickens & doggy gorgeous. We had some trouble with the WiFi & hot water but both were dealt with promptly by the well trained & friendly staff. Sadly the restaurant meal on the Sunday night was not up to standard. My friend had the Moussaka which was very poor - tasteless & dry. Also for just 2 tables occupied in the restaurant it lost much of the atmosphere. Just because there were few people it should not affect the standards.
- PIETER (10/5): - Peaceful and the staff went out their way to make us feel at home N/A
- Robyn (9/5): -
- itonde441647 (10/5): A day at Eight Bells - We had a wonderful time at Eight Bells and the staff were super efficient, helpful and friendly. My wife reminisced about the old days when she visited Eight Bells as a child.
- Gregory (9/5): - Good service. Good food. Relaxing atmosphere

- Ian (10/5): It was an absolutely wonderful - All of it! The staff were exceptional. Nothing
- anina (10/5): Beautiful - Love the atmosphere and friendliness .. and the marmelade !
- Stephen (8/5): Short one-night stayover. - Location is a good overnight spot between Mossel Bay & Oudtshoorn.
Lovely tree setting. The noisy ceiling fan when trying to fall asleep.
- Alexander (9/5): -
- Claude (9/5): - Great staff Our room was right next to the road and as a result noisy at night
- Gillian (8/5): Almost all good … but if I’m paying those rates Iexpect to be able to shower . - Lovely setting . Clean rooms . Friendly staff . The plumbing system ! The wait for hot water is … no exaggeration.. about 15 mins if water wastage until the hot water comes . Second night there was no water at all out the hot tap and cold water was a trickle .
- Gill (10/5): -
- 196trisha (10/5): Wonderful stay - Accommodation was perfect, in a beautiful setting. The staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful and I really appreciated the bottle of wine given for my birthday - that was an unexpected bonus! Breakfasts were excellent with lots of choice. Wide choice of books to borrow - I read two of them -and a lovely lounge with a fire to sit in when required. Couldn't fault our stay in any way. Would definitely return here if we came back to the western Cape.
- Fransisco (10/5): Superb stay. - The rooms are so comfortable and the underfloor heating was a treat..
Love the history of 8Bells No tea spoons for morning coffee and no cloth to wipe the surfaces .
- hwest336090 (8/5): Beyond Expectation - We had intended to stay in Mossel Bay whilst on our road trip to Cape Town but we were very glad to go slightly out of our way to stay at Eight Bells Mountain Inn. The hotel was way beyond our expectations and we have no hesitation in recommending it to people who are looking for old world charm but at the same time expecting modern amenities.
- Daleen (10/5): -
- hmeiri350212 (10/5): Old School Charm - A lovely traditional type "old school" inn in beautiful, peaceful setting, Delicious food, attentive staff and everything you need for a relaxing breakaway from the hustle and bustle of life. The rooms are spotlessly clean but could do with a little update.
- Peter & Helen (10/5): Perfect - Old school gem with friendly staff, delicious food and comfortable rooms. Underfloor heating was a bonus as it was winter. Lovely lounge with fireplace and very comfortable chairs for reading and relaxing. Beautiful setting and peaceful.
- Andre (9/5): -
- Riki (9/5): Tranquility - The grounds are beautiful. The hotel has an old world charm, and the staff are tops! Loved the under-carpet heating. The mattress is a bit lumpy
- Herman (10/5): Cozy family stay in beautiful mountain setting - The view, the food, the billiard room, the horse riding, and the scones - these were all amazing, to name just a few. I can highly recommend Eight Bells. Wish we could stay longer.
- Susan (7/5): Good -
- Lizaan (10/5): Exceptional -
- lthoma317543 (10/5): Magic!! - I treated my wife to a 5 day stay at Eight Bells fir her 71st birthday. As we stayed in the area in the '90s it was lively to see faces like Cornelius that we remembered from that time! Still one of the most beautiful settings im the country! Add to that the 1st class staff and you have the recipe for a magical experience! Thank you all so much for your "gasvryheid"!
- Llew (10/5): Eight bells excellence! - The trip was for my wife's birthday and it scored 110%! The staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. Food and service was excellent. Even to the point of baking a little cake and singing for her - apparently never done before! Much appreciated and, if at all possible, we'll be back!
- Hanli (9/5): Superb -
- Morrison (8/5): A lovely stop on the way to Cape Town half way house on the Robinson’s Pass. - Lovely position and a walk down memory lane. There was nothing not to like.
- Alet (10/5): we had a wonderful stay - with delicious supper - 8 Bells - a beautiful place to stay - rooms spacious and well serviced and clean
- Bruce (10/5): Exceptional - Welcome respite after a long drive from Cape Town. Beautiful well kept grounds.Proper dinner service and breakfast.
