Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok, if no where else to stay - It was basic accommodation
- Ross (8/5): - Whilst the staff were lovely, as was the food, the hotel needs a little bit of TLC. The headboard on my bed was loose and the bathroom shower had a bit of mould on both the shower curtain and the shower roof. My room was also directly in front of the road and the traffic seemed to go on and on all night.
- julia (8/5): - Good accommodation, friendly staff. Beds were a bit old and uncomfortable and there was only one pillow. Food was excellent.
- Susan (4/5): - Poor hot water in bathroom to start with water that came out the showers was so poor you could not have a shower
- Mark (8/5): - Great stay - good food and very welcoming
- Emma (8/5): Lovely little stay - Lovely quiet place, rather nostalgic in decor i'll admit. Girls were friendly and food was fab!! Ideal for a little stop-over
- Martin (10/5): - Full of friendly people, offers excellent meals and has one of the prettiest barmaids I ever have seen.
- Martin (10/5): - A pleasant, friendly place that also serves a great meal
- John (10/5): - excellent
- Lawrence (10/5): - Nice quiet accommodation & lovely clean room. Everything you need in the room and fantastic breakfast. Will definitely stay again if we are in the area. Great hard working & friendly staff as well. Thank you for a lovely overnight stay.
- colin (10/5): - Nice clean friendly staff
- Joanne (6/5): - Staff were lovely. Decor a bit tired and the road is very noisy outside the window.
- Robert (6/5): Nostalgia? - Great staff, great food. If you are looking for nostalgia then the room we had provided this with Formica panels in the very small en-suite complete with broken fixtures and a good deal of mold on the ceiling. The shower provides for good water saving as the flow was just sufficient to rinse off the soap. The bed was soft enough to enable the springs to make their presence be known and the bedroom ceiling has a large water leak stain. Took me back to the 70’s.
- David (6/5): - Singer in bar good but didn't start on time as was suggested 9.00 was time and didn't stat until 9.30
- Malcolm (6/5): OK, but a little over-priced - Arrived late. Bar was OK. Service was good. I had a room on the front street which was stiflingly hot and the noise on the street wouldn't let me open the windows.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly hotel - Enjoyable stay. The Sportsman’s decor is outdated and tatty but the rooms were clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was good with generous portions.
- LARRY (6/5): Pleasant hotel with good facilities for diners. - Room was dated and needed a little T.L.C.
Found the staff to be very helpful.
Enjoyed a lovely evening meal, and the breakfast the following morning was very good.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Hotel was dated but ok for the price.
Mamangement not overly friendly but pleasant and helpful staff doing cleaning etc.
- John (4/5): Room very tied, kept awake by noise o/s of window - Room needed redecorating but was clean. Didn't get much sleep due to machinery noise outside of bedroom window.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Traumatic day - On arrival from a traumatic near death experience on the M4 we decided to go for a walk after checking in. On return we realised the DVD player was not working. When the girls wanted to bath I noticed hair and dirt all up the wall by the bath so had to try in clean it down with antibacterial wipes. Then I thought I paid £100 for room that has definitely not been properly cleaned. When reporting to the desk about the dvd she said someone will look at it in the morning. So would not recommend this family room to anyone with high standards of cleanliness or active children
- John (8/5): Near to the Moor and Beaches - A very good breakfast and cheerful staff. Close to the Moor and also to the coast
- Valerie (8/5): Surprise visit to friends - Stop over for 1 night to visit friends . I have stayed here before. It suits my needs. Clean & comfortable rooms. Friendly helpful staff, wonderful breakfast- can recommend the Devon Cream Porridge.
- Andy (6/5): Nice pub and food but family room was stifling - I'd like to leave a really nice review about this hotel as the pub itself, the staff, and the breakfast were all perfectly pleasant. The only thing that really spoiled our stay was the fact that there was no air conditioning in the room, just a desk fan, and because the room is ground floor we couldn't leave the window open for fear of someone climbing in. So I had to stay up into the small hours with the window open to let the day's heat out of the room. None of us got a proper night's sleep unfortunately.
Only other thing I would say is that the family room could definitely do with a bit of sprucing up as it looks quite scuffed, stained roof tiles etc. Location wise for our needs, couldn't fault it.
- Deborah (6/5): Needs a little TLC - A very dated hotel room......not impressed with the bed - very uncomfortable but clean.....the bathroom was especially dated but clean...I would have the chair removed and cleaned - stains over it.The window lock in my room was broken so wouldn't lock - I only mention this because my room overlooked a flat roof and some of the other room windows were next to mine.
On the plus side...
On the plus side.... the food was delicious and the service was very good by all the staff.
- Kathy (8/5): Tired but friendly. - The staff at the Sportsmans are very friendly, polite and helpful and are not to be faulted. Very nice cooked breakfast and, although we didn't have it, the carvery on Sunday looked/smelled good! However, the accommodation has long since passed it's best and some very easily/cheaply remedied problems in the rooms have sadly been overlooked which makes it seem rather unloved. It is ok for the price but we all agreed we'd happily pay a chunk more for an updated room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Dirty carpets - Room was very dirty, carpet not cleaned. Shower pressure non existent. WiFi was very poor. Didn’t wait for breakfast after experiencing the condition of the room. And where was the free bottle of water?
- Ray (8/5): Older hotel - Very helpful and friendly staff but hotel needs some upgrading
- George (10/5): Friendly people - Our first experience in a English pub, a real English pub not a tourist trap.
Great food and very friendly atmosphere. Room was clean and comfortable. Floors a little squeaky could hear neighbour walking about but it added to the atmosphere of being in old inn.
- Chris (8/5): OK - Warm and Comfy room but in need of some TLC. Food was good as was the service
- Verified traveler (6/5): Did the job - I needed to be in Ivybridge, so location great.
Nice clean hotel, good quality bed linen and a great size, fluffy bath towel. The hotel is a little dated in places but you get the impression that they are making changes.
Staff were really friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Indifferent - Nothing good or bad really. Basic but could do with some TLC.
- Llew (8/5): Value for money - We have stayed here before some time ago, noticed that there had been some much needed decorations done. Some areas still need renovation, however the price is reasonable and reflects the situation. The breakfasts are really excellent and we had evening meals during our stay that were very good and value for money.
- colin (6/5): Colin - Rooms need a bit of an upgrade, check in & bar service good, dinner & breakfast was good
- Roger (8/5): Regular stay - Its not The Ritz, but perfectly acceptable.
Friendly staff, good food, a bed for the night and no hastle over parking.
- John (8/5): Close to the Moor and Plymouth - Very friendly staff and a very good breakfast. This the fourth time we have stayed at this hotel
- Verified traveler (6/5): Terrible Place - Had a separate bathroom which we weren't aware of until we arrived, to say its dated is an understatement, shower had no water pressure, botched hole repair in the ceiling, rooms are red hot, open the window and it was beside the main road so noisy.
Breakfast was terrible, hairs in wifes beans and mushrooms, salmon was cut up and added to the scrambled egg which had too much milk in which swamped the plate, when fish was mixed with the slop it looked like cat sick.
Never stay there again,
- Danny (8/5): - Really good customer service.
- mrs.hazel J (10/5): - Everything was satisfactory.
- kbw (8/5): Good base for walking on Dartmoor - The hotel was quite busy, so although we I had booked a standard double we were upgraded to a larger room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Convenient for the station and town. - Travelling on from here this was handy for the station and town centre. The staff were helpful, room was clean.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel close to the venue we were attending - Staff very nice and food was good, shame about our mattress very uncomfortable, hardly no mattress all springs! But clean and respective of the price.
- Terrie (8/5): Convenient - For public accommodation it was OK. The room was much too hot, and I wasn't very impressed by the cobwebs. But the food was good and very reasonably priced.
- Gillian (8/5): One of the friendliest hotels ever! - Although the place is dated and faded in places you can't fault the friendliness and hospitality of everyone connected with the Inn. We were there to watch a game at the local Rugby ground; from that point the location was perfect - not even a mile away from the club! Checking in and out was easy, evening food was great and the breakfast huge with plenty of choice. If you want somewhere in that area to stay consider the Sportsman's Inn - you won't go wrong!
- Chiefie (8/5): In easy reach of Main road (ie A38) - Very friendly and helpful good breakfast, In easy reach of Exeter and Plymouth.
- theresa (4/5): Basic place to stay - The place is dated. It felt like you were staying at great grans, who no longer gas capacity to take care of the place.
- mar (4/5): Dated hotel - Didn't pay much for this one night stay so didn't expect much! The hotel needs total refurbishment, saying that it was full. The staff seems rushed and busy too. The breakfast was good and you could have anything you wanted
- Ian (10/5): A good place for a short stay - Stayed 2 nights whilst doing Devon coast to coast. God varied menu and some excellent ales. Staff very helpful. Twin room has outside bathroom and toilet where water pressure was variable but not a real problem.
- hywell (6/5): clean but understaffed - it suited a purpose . would I stay again .... yes of course.
- G and L (6/5): Decor needs refresh. Carpets very worn. - Adequate accomodation for a short stay. Rooms are clean, but 'tired'. Staff are friendly and happy. Restaurant is reasonable quality and price.
- Susan (8/5): Great place for a night or two - The pub section was great and the staff were really friendly and the breakfast was excellent
- Verified traveler (4/5): Grubby interior - Uncomfortable bed and musty smelling room even with the window open .
- robert (4/5): - The Hotel was very dated and tired.
- tracie (10/5): love it love it love it. - We checked in and was looked after by staff straight away.we had a meal which was the best we had in a long time.unfortunately i got ill an the bed was very hard as i have a condition that i need a cloud as a matress an i just couldnt sleep at all on the bed.i would love to go back again as i lovef everything about the place.staff were the best iv had in a long time.kind.helpful.polite an fun.
- Dominic (8/5): Great Breakfast - Was comfortable stay and good value for money and friendly staff. Breakfast was very good.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Warm friendly staff - If you want a good freindly pub with simple sleeping this is the place for you..
Food was great too .
Plenty of parking .
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable room and friendly staff. We like the pub as well. The food is great
- Jacky (8/5): Hotel on the edge of small town - Only stayed for 3 nights. Was made to feel welcome by staff and customers. Enjoyed meals and at the hotel. Unfortunately I was there to attend a funeral but the buffet catered by the hotel afterwards was excellent.
- Jane (10/5): 'The Ivybridge Wedding' - Booked several rooms for family attending a wedding. Jan and staff were very helpful. The cooked breakfast and other options were delicious. The rooms were clean, comfortable and just what we needed. Would stay again if in the area. Thanks
- Verified traveler (6/5): shabby and rundown - broken television good start. old shabby looking place. broken handles and smelly carpets.
- william (8/5): Very good place to stay - Good pub with pleasant atmosphere. Friendly staff, good facilities. Recommended
- Michael B (10/5): - The staff could not have been more helpful, courteous and accommodating. They went out of their way to ensure that my stay, from my arrival until my departure, was as pleasant and stress-free as possible. I cannot thank them enough!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Could have been cleaner and more upto date docor - We enjoyed our stay, and the breakfast was lovely, however the room was not the best for cleanliness as there was a dusty old sock under bunk beds and a pair of knickers on the radiator in the bathroom, which also had really bad fitted flooring the lino was all bumpy, which wasn't very pleasant
- Chiefie (6/5): Close to town centre and Plymouth - Very good breakfast and evening Meals if required. All the staff were very helpful, will use the hotel again when next in Ivybridge .
- John (8/5): Basic but exceptional breakfast and comfy bed - The room was basic but clean and tidy with tea and coffee etc. The breakfast was exceptional, included in the great value price and the bed was comfy and the bedding felt very premium.
- Christine (6/5): very tired hotel. - Firstly, the bed linen was of good quality and clean. The room smelled of clean linen when I walked in.
The breakfast was good and freshly prepared.
The toilet seat was broken and gave a nasty nip when you sat on it. I was told it would be replaced the next day, but this would not benefit me as I was leaving the following morning.
I cleaned the 2 remote control s before I was happy to use them.
I didn't plug the clock radio in as when I located the plug, the carpet in the corner it was in was very dusty.
The ensuite was small, with a vanity sink. The shower tray wasn't well sealed so I didn't use the shower.
- kev (6/5): - ok to put your head down for the night after a long day be ok, for reps/ hikers/
- Verified traveler (4/5): Still in the shower - I had the longest shower ever because the water pressure was so low. My room was really hot and only one window would open.
- Richard (6/5): - Pity the showers in most rooms were very poor. Only trickle of lukewarm water.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very poor morning service. Room was comfortable, bathroom was small and toilet was cracked. Wil not stay again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Being a rather large chap l found the single bed rather small and uncomfortable, however On the second night l slept quiet well.
- Roger (8/5): One night - Working away one night. Very cheap stay. Dinner and breakfast good.
- joe (10/5): - Superb as always great staff and landlord couldn't fault it
- bwfc12 (6/5): weekend away - you get what u pay for economy room no ensuite bathroom 6ft away down a corridor breakfast was OK room was too warm even with windows open and right above the kitchen so fans going all the time but other than that some place to lay your head down at night as I believe the only b and b in Ivybridge and that's were I wanted to be
- Ho Suk (10/5): Great choice - Staff was very kind and helpful Very clean, tidy and cozy room. Breakfast was great.
- Heather (10/5): Thanks to the staff - Would recommend this hotel to everybody. Old English, wonderful staff and huge quality for money.
- Ana (8/5): Friendly Inn in the centre of Ivybridge (Dartmoor) - We had a pleasant stay at the Spotsman inn. We had the economy room and it was comfortable clean and cozy. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, we arrived on a late train but we warned them we would be checking after 10 pm and they were there to welcome us.
Breakfast is good too. Overall good value for money.
- mrs.hazel J (10/5): Interesring - Friendly staff, excellent meals, hotel décor with amazing memorabilia, time to
relax and browse through the collection, all in all a very nice hotel,
and in a good position for the lovely town and walks on Dartmoor.
- Barrie (8/5): Overnight Stay - ok for a overnight stay reasonable prices with good food
- Elsie (8/5): Space - I booked a family room thinking it would be spacious enough for my son and I. Unfortunately it was cramped for space and had bunk beds in the same tiny room as the double bed. My son broke the bottom bunk. The staff were excellent in sorting out the disaster but it meant that my son ended up sleeping on the mattress on the floor as there were no other rooms available.
