- Cody (10/5): Great hostel vibe in Kyoto with super kind staff, just the curfew was a bit limiting—but it fits the city’s early pace. - My stay in Kyoto had a really relaxed, hostel-style vibe that made it easy to settle in. The place had a social, welcoming atmosphere—simple, clean, and perfect if you’re just looking for a comfortable base while exploring the city.
One thing that stood out was how helpful the staff were. There was a lady there who went out of her way to help me when I needed directions. Instead of just explaining, she took the time to guide me and made sure I understood everything clearly. That kind of genuine kindness made a big difference in my experience.
Overall, it felt less like just a place to sleep and more like a friendly environment where people actually care. Great option if you want something affordable, social, and welcoming in Kyoto. The only downside for me was the curfew. It wasn’t a huge issue since Kyoto tends to quiet down early anyway, but it did feel a bit limiting if you want full flexibility at night.

- Charles (10/5): i stayed a week , the towels and washing machine were both free . i got a locker and a bunk with shelf storage . i accid - the Guesthouse is nestled in between multiple konbini stores and places to eat . the walk to the train station is a breeze , even in the summer heat . the staff is on-site 24/7 and you can reach out with any issues you may have . there’s even a nice playground nearby , if you like to loiter on swing sets like me . all the other guests were friendly as well there’s a curfew from 00:00 - 06:00 , you cannot leave or come back between those sleeping hours — if you have any late night plans , you will have to find somewhere else to stay or hang out until morning light

- Ek (10/5): Exceptional - The staff was very friendly and polite. The room was nice and clean. There were many restaurants were near the Inn. I really enjoyed my stay at Hyakumanben Cross.
- Angela (5/5): Good place, but staff member was quite rude - My stay was mostly pleasant. The shared female dorm was comfortable and affordable and I stayed in a quiet private room on my last day that was very cozy, also at a good price. Luggage storage was helpful post-checkout. However, there was an incident during checkout that was upsetting. I was running late to check out, which is at 11 AM, and as soon as it was 11, the older lady who I think also keeps the guesthouse began to be very rude, saying “hurry up” repeatedly. I tried to be as quick as I could, but she escalated to yelling. I was 13 minutes over the checkout time by the time I was able to get out, but the sudden escalation to yelling was really confusing and stressful. I definitely regret the delay, but kinder communication would have been better. Overall, a good stay but with a difficult end. Would not recommend if you have sensory issues or are neurodivergent.
- Daniela (8/5): Very good -
- Joshua (10/5): - The guesthouse is quite nice, the dorm I stayed in is just 4 bunks, which is a good thing when staying is guesthouses. The showers were very clean for a shared situations. The location is in a charming district near Kyoto university. It can get a little loud at night with the university students drinking in the area, but that wasn’t really a problem if you have earplugs. The proprietor and her family have limited English ability, so be prepared for some mild miscommunications, but they are impeccably friendly and good-natured, so it was never a problem.
- kimberly (10/5): - Very clean and comfortable, lovely staff and in a great area, will always stay here n Tokyo. Thank you!
- Franck (8/5): Very good -
- Ekaterina (10/5): Exceptional - I had a wonderful relaxing stay! Thank you
- Qingwan (10/5): Exceptional - Clean, friendly, quiet, but also near the street of food. Love everything here! Will definitely come back!
- Emi (10/5): Exceptional -
(10/5): Exceptional - The cleanest hotel I've ever seen! So quiet and nice. Blankets are super comfortable, very soft and warm. Want to have the same to home. Be warned that it is impossible to get into hotel after midnight
- Katerina (10/5): Exceptional - very nice, cleane, calm place to stay plus i really liked the location it was a bit out of turist madness but also very easy to get to all places ypu need to. Its close by public train station and next to it is place where you can rent bike which i would recomend its also very close by the river so rent your bike and go to cycle along the river. I would defenetly come back.
- Eduardo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Louis (8/5): Very good -
- abdel (10/5): - the house is clean and well managed. thanks to the daughter and mom who runs this place.
Great experience!
- Katsunori (10/5): - Clean, quiet, cozy house!
It's a perfect place to relax and unwind.
- Tingting (10/5): Great! - The location is great. It is not in the center, but very close to Kyoto University and train station, as well as restaurants, convience stores and Kamo river. The host is very friendly also. There are lots of books at the shared place on the first floor, and fully equiped kitchen as well. No
- Kevin Leon Yun (10/5): - The Guesthouse Hyakumanben Cross was charming and kept very clean. The owners, a mother and daughter, were welcoming, friendly, and helpful.
I was surprised at how convenient the location is! Nearby Demachi Yanagi train station is a sort of terminal station at the north east side of Kyoto city. It's a good starting point to go down into the city, or up north out of the city for mountain temple sightseeing.
Hyakumanben itself is near Kyoto University, so there are so many different bus lines running through the area. I was able to get everywhere I wanted to by train or bus, either directly or with just a single transfer.
The guesthouse had everything you need. I was in one of the shared rooms which had 2 sets of bunk beds and would sleep 4 individuals. Every cot had a curtain for a bit of privacy, and a locker to hold your things.
I had hoped to meet other travelers during my stay. To my surprise there were mainly Japanese guests who mainly kept to themselves, and I never really saw anyone in the common space even though I sat there reading for a while. Maybe it was just timing, but for my trip it wasn't the international guesthouse experience I half expected.
Still, it was a great stay and I would gladly visit this guesthouse again the next time I'm in Kyoto.
- Hsin-i (9/5): Better than I expected! - Bed is larger than a normal single bed. The public kitchen is beside some rooms, we have some limits for not disturbing other costumers/voyagers.
- Frank (1/5): Terrible - Not much Not worth the money
- D (9/5): Superb - Beautifully maintained guest house, confortable firm bunkbeds, nice common area, super nice host, convenient to bus and Keihan metro. Close to Kyoto University, quiet street but close to stores and restaurants.
- Dunja (9/5): Nice Japanese vibe hostel - Spotless clean, nicely decorated in Japanese style, owners are really taking care of the place and their guests well The dorms are really tiny so you can’t open your luggage in the room
- Bridget (1/5): One of the worst experiences we’ve had in 6 months of backpacking. - (Continued negatives from below)
You’re also locked out between midnight and 6am. We thought this was fine but we’re very glad we moved hotels because the second night we were meant to be staying there, we met new friends at a bar and stayed out until just before 1am. So we would have had to keep a close eye on the clock and cut our time short or would have been locked out until 6am.
It seems like a good deal and reasonable restrictions but it’s really not worth it. Just pay a little more for literally anywhere else. It started out great, with the place seeming nice and clean, but the first night we were there, we got zero sleep because the bunk beds were so noisy. They’re very cheap, poorly made bunk beds-they’re not bolted to the wall, so all four beds sway and creak SO loudly as soon as someone so much as rolls over. When someone is climbing up the ladder, the whole thing shakes and groans with wood on wood like there’s an earthquake. The dividers between the beds also don’t reach the top of the bunk, so the other person’s light shines over the top of the bunk if they’re awake late. The walls are also super thin, so you could hear people rummaging in their lockers in the dorm next door. The beds are also quite uncomfortable, with the mattresses so thin that you can feel the floor beneath them.
We decided to check out after one night because the noise, even with earplugs, was unbearable. We booked somewhere else and advised them of such. At first they tried to tell us to talk to the other guests in the room about the noise and for us to ask others to be quiet. We advised that it’s unreasonable to ask others to not roll over in their sleep, and it was an issue with the beds themselves. We asked for a refund, as we were checking out before check out time and only staying 1/3 nights and they advised we would need to contact bookings, as we pay bookings, not them directly. We said we would and left with our bags.
When we contacted bookings, they lied and advised we were still staying there, which we weren’t. When I messaged them, they refused to address it, told me to negotiate with bookings and just cited their cancellation policy, saying bookings would refund me, as if it would come from the company and they would keep the money and have no one in the beds. Very dishonest.
- Van (5/5): Passable - Staff was weird as I had checked out immediately wasn't allowed to stay in the common room anymore.
- Ciaran (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anil (10/5): Exceptional -

- Meredith (9/5): Superb -
- Nyam (8/5): My stay at the guesthouse was a very good experience for me. I learned how to share space. - Its proximity to shops, bus stops and more importantly to the venue of the event I added. The restrictions and having to climb up a ladder before I sleep on my bed.

- Albert (10/5): - The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, they kindly allowed me to practice my bad Japanese but they also spoke some English, so it was easy to communicate. As I was leaving they gave me a little origami pig as a good luck charm - very sweet. I was in a mixed shared room which was very clean and comfortable. The facilities were great, with showers, a laundry room and a private bathtub which you could rent for an additional ¥300. The hostel is conveniently located near to many shrines and temples, and there is a bike rental shop about five minutes down the road (cycling is a very good way to go for exploring Kyoto as it’s very flat and quite compact). Highly recommend!
- Chia (10/5): Clean, Adequately quiet and Comfortable! - Facilities and furnitures were all very clean. Saw them cleaning it daily which made my stay very comfortable. As not a lot of guests were around, I was able to make myself comfortable in the common area, utilising the space and quietness for reading or browsing the web. Walls were pretty thin but reminders are clearly display to remind guests to lower their volume at night. Thus, not much of a problem.
- Calla (10/5): Exceptional -
