Guest Reviews
- sylavis (10/5): Lovely little Mexican gem - Needed one night before meeting family. Spotlessly clean, large rooms with great a/c. Breakfast and lunch available but lovely dinner can be had next door. My room had a fridge, hot plate, microwave, coffee maker( bring your own coffee) and dishes. The hot water was consistent for showers. Staff do not speak English!
Travelling alone I was very safe even though the cab ride to get there seemed like I was going deep into nowhere. Playa Largo is very quiet, definitely a place for making your own fun or relaxing by the pool or in the beach. No stores close by .
- Zannvoy (10/5): Restaurant in amazing setting - This extraordinary restaurant is set on a cliff side patio half way down a cliff overlooking a stunning bay. The surprising entrance is part of the amazing experience This is a place to go to watch the sunset in addition the good food and service are wonderful. We had delicious seafood and lamb dinners and can highly recommend this restaurant.
- maggi5376 (2/5): Avoid booking here at all costs - We booked at this hotel in March, 2019 (10 months before our vacation) and found out one week before we flew to Zihuatanejo in January, 2020 that our reservation had been terminated with no explanation. The same thing happened to the reservation of the couple that was travelling with us. Thankfully we had booked through Expedia so they were able to find alternate accommodations for us on such short notice. I will never consider booking at this hotel again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved the oceanfront property! Breakfast was as wonderful!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excelente servicio y el establecimiento con muy bonito.
- muxumuxu (2/5): Kaukan is no longer in Zihua. - It is in Ixtapa
To make a long story short?
You don't want to go there.
We are talking about the restaurant experience. Nothing else.
The hostess, we were there for a birthday party and most of us are 75,
Did not even touch her dish after having one look at it, an " os so bucco", misspelled.
The silverware was cafeteria material.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I found Casa Kua-Kan to be well-designed and beautifully appointed. There was never a problem with the reservation, the accommodation or any aspect of the stay. The Spanish-speaking staff were super-accommodating of anything needed during my stay. The beach and village around Playa Larga are tranquil for sure.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The setting with a panoramic view of the beach and ocean was fabulous.
For our short time there, 3 days, the remoteness was wonderful. For a much longer stay, that could be an issue in terms of transportation (no buses) for shopping.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Super quiet with empty beach. Swimming can be tricky as waves are big
- WendyAndBuck (6/5): Disappointing - We visited for just a one-night's stay away from Zihua proper. We were the only guests for the night (a Thursday in early December), which was nice to enjoy the pool and incredible view all to ourselves. However, this also meant no evening food or drinks available, which we didn't know ahead of time. We walked over the adjacent property (Puerta Paraiso) and no food/drink services there either. The area is very isolated, so you can't just walk to an enramada. We ended up getting a cab to a tienda about 2 miles away, and stocking up on drinks/snacks to get us through till morning. I don't even know if any staff was on the property overnight, which is a little scary to think about, as it's not gated and easily accessible from the beach or the road. The room was spacious (beach/oceanfront on ground level), with a cooling pool on the deck. We made the best of it, and enjoyed a quiet evening listening to the waves crash, and as always in ZIhua, the sunset was amazing!
- Daniel (8/5): A place close to the beach - Nice place. Staff dont speak english and they dont try to learn at least the basic (few of them with 10 years). I translate for them. Like an staff you know more places to visit and things to do than a tourist. If a turist stay in my place i do my best to they enjoy. STAFF Aover there dont care about you.
- Minkey (2/5): BAD - There was no one there when we arrived, even though they had received a call 15 minutes before we were on the way. After nearly 1hour of waiting someone turned up without even an apolog and did not seem to care wether we were there or not. So we left and would "NEVER" return!
- Manuela (10/5): - Relaxing. IT was nice to be away from the noise, tv, radio and everyday hassle. The ocean breeze and the crash of the ocean waves were music to my ears and food for my soul!!! WE are already making plans to go back year!
- Neil_Travels (2/5): Looking for a bad vacation, this is your place! - Nothing was pleasant. Staff was grumpy, pool was filthy, the design and layout of the property was a complete joke. The room we were given smelled of cat urine, linens were disgusting, cigarette butts were in the "jacuzzi", the list goes on.
We switched rooms (both with beachfront views), the second room was still terrible, but smelled slightly better. Just don't stay here, the beach is beautiful, but this property ruins the entire experience. I wouldn't stay here again if I was paid, ever.
One night was one too many.
- R-and-M22 (10/5): Just lovely - We've traveled to Zihua for the past 9 years. Always stayed on Playa La Ropa, but no availability earlier this month. Found Casa Kau Kan on line. Traveled with another couple. Our pool view rooms were spacious and very comfortable. The pool was awesome. There was virtually no one there. The beach was stunning, though we were advised not to get in because of the waves and the under-tow. Granted they only serve breakfast (fresh squeezed OJ - pure yum) and lunch and no Wi-Fi or tv - go with the flow. The staff was very attentive, but spoke very little English - we all made it work. Would definitely go back.
- Brent (4/5): - Poor lighting in the room.No bathro door, so no privacy when using the toilet. The one meal we had was terrible. The location is way out of town, felt isolated.Wi Fi was poor. Great beach but they recommend you don't swim in it because of the big waves.Make sure you bring your bug spray. If your looking for peace and quite , this is the place. On a scale of one to ten we would give it a five.
- Bob (10/5): Nice hotel close to the beach - Es muy tranquilo. If you're not looking for a lot of distractions, this place is perfect. No bar, no TV, just the ocean and palm trees and a pool. On a beautiful stretch of uncrowded beach a few miles from town, perfect for just lounging around. The hotel offers breakfast and lunch but no dinner. Family-style restaurants within walking distance are great, but don't stay open late. It's not hard to get into the nearby town which offers a lot of activities, like snorkeling, scuba, kayaks and catamaran rentals, etc. Excellent restaurants and some nightlife in town, including a restaurant also called Kau Kan, owned by the same owner as the hotel.
- 637antonyi (2/5): Sad - We arrived at 5 in the evening. We checked in and were surprised when they told us they could not serve the evening meal. Their internet connection was so bad that they could not get my credit card to work. If we wanted to eat they would summon a cab. The location was lovely and quiet and the beach was deserted. We were shown our room and at first it looked OK.
As they could not feed us we decided on an early night. The shower only offered cold water and the tap in the basin barely flowed. The lighting in the room was very dull with no bedside lighting, so we could not read.
In the morning we went down for breakfast at 8am and were offered awful tasting coffee and later a food menu. I chose huevos rancheros and it came as eggs on a thin pancake floating in tomato coloured water. It was outstandingly horrible but I was hungry so I eat it.
We had planned to stay for 9 days but left that morning feeling very sad that a charming place had been made into a nightmare by very poor management.
- 277tomc277 (8/5): Secluded - Very secluded location right on the beach. Great place to lay in the sun and chill. We stayed here for a few days then moved to another hotel closer to zihuantenjo for the balance of our stay in the area. Taxi to town was 140 peso depending on your negotiating skills. There are 11 room. All were filled while we were there but we only saw a few guests over the 3 days we spent there. We had room 4, no fridge (some rooms do have them).
This is a very clean property inside and out and I would give it 3 stars. Linnens and towels are not new nor were they old and frayed. No frills.... no wifi, tv or telephone. The beach is large, awesome as very quiet. The surf can be rough and there is a warning when you sign in not to swim in the ocean. The pool is clean, refreshing and in good shape. Several local beach reastarunts (most close at 6 pm sunset) 10 min walk south on the beach. Mostly seafood. Covienience stores on street down by reastarunts (open till 9pm). We brought movies on a tablet and a good bluetooth speaker and had theater under the stars on the beach every night :) Hope this helps.
- bmwm6 (8/5): basic but wonderful - The rooms are large and comfortable. The location is fabulous..right on the beach. Almost deserted beach that is about 15 km. long. Big waves. The staff do not speak English but are truly nice people. Ricardo, the owner, speaks perfect English and is very friendly and helpful. No internet. Beach bars about 500 metres away have cheap beer, good food. Food is fine at Kau Kan, but the restaurant closes at 6:00. About a 15 minute taxi to Zihuatenejo restaurants.
- William (10/5): Quiet location....quaint hotel, nice pool. - A truly quiet location on a fabulous beach. Be prepared for no staff who can speak English but are wonderful people. The dining option stops at 6 and there is no wifi although it can often be stolen from next door. Bars about 500 yards away on the beach.
- elpavorealblanco (6/5): Disappointing Second Visit - We stayed here several years ago and looked forward to a return visit. Unfortunately things do not always stay the same. The hotel is in need of some upkeep. We booked through Booking.com. Their web site indicates the hotel includes such things as hairdryers, radios, minibars, carpeted rooms, trouser presses and irons - none of which were in our room. When you enter the property you are faced with signs that food and drinks are not permitted from outside, despite the fact that the room included a refrigerator. The meal service was only available from 9 am to 6 pm when the young lady who served as both a cook and maid was present. We chose to eat at the adjoining property where the food and service was outstanding. Of interest, the hotel's web site indicates the least expensive rooms at this time of year are $787 with a bold statement of "All rates in US dollars." That may explain why only two rooms were occupied while we were there.
- PatzcuaroCharles (2/5): Has been, once was, on a downhill slide - Over the years we have loved this property but NOT NOW! They are now bringing large busloads of people, 50 or more onboard including 40 or so very young children. They are putting about 14 people per toom. Which is totally against their policy of no children younger than 16 and no extra beds in rooms. These people were rude, crude, and obnoxious. There were at least 40 kids in the pool at any given time, which made the smallish swimming pool unusable.for our entire stay. The kids were yelling and screaming in the pool until way past midnight. We will not return.
- Belmill (8/5): Location, location, location is this restaurants appeal....the view from the dining deck is magnificent - Have never stayed at casa kua-kan but have dined there....to look out onto the ocean at dusk is wonderful, the menu is quite extensive though we were a bit disappointed in the quality of our seafood..(it was good, I'd rate it 6 on a scale of 10)however the service was outstanding,
A wonderful dining experience.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Very remote area and hotel. - We didn't expect the hotel to be so far from the restaurants, golf, and shopping. The room was nice but no TV, phone or other amenities. We were the only people in the hotel. Went to dinner at Kau Kan restaurant in Zihua
and one cab driver would not take us back to the hotel. Long, dark road and someone had been robbed, he said.
It was a scary ride back. The beach is nice; we only saw two other people on it. For the price, I expected more amenities and a nicer facility, although the rooms are nicely decorated. We only had breakfast there and it was ok, but nothing special. We would not go back.
- MTAYLOR9999 (10/5): A Hidden Gem!!! - Casa Kau-Kan is an incredible paradise!! It is an amazing secluded hotel on a gorgeous beach away from it all. Ricardo, Alfredo and Emiliano were so friendly and helpful!! It truly felt like a home away from home. I will definitely be back.
- LouieTravelKing (10/5): Paradise lost...and found. - I don't know where to start? The location? The food? The people? The beach? The welcoming atmosphere? The breeze swaying the coconut palms? The crabs on the beach? The crabs walking outside the room? The fireflies and their light show? The wide shallow beach? The clean sand? It was all wonderful.
Thank you all the staff! Owner/Chef Ricardo, wonderful person. You must also try the Casa KauKan restaurant overlooking the Zihuatanejo Bay. MUST! Did I say must? Absolutely MUST! The grounds-keepers El Güero, Emilio. Housekeeping: Ruth. The restaurant server: Nestor. All wonderful folks who really do appreciate your visit. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I will just add some pix for you fellow and future guests!
- amandak842 (10/5): Beautiful, Relaxing and Affordable! - Casa Kua-Kan is absolutely amazing. My mother and I went for a mom-daughter vacation over my spring break, and loved it. We were both looking for a quiet, secluded hotel with a small number of people to relax, and we got exactly that. For most of our stay, we were the only people staying at the boutique hotel.
We had an oceanfront suite on the first floor. It was spacious, with a firm, but comfortable king-size bed, a large couch, a huge suite, and a private terrace with a dipping pool. Even though the pool was not heated, so we didn’t actually sit in it, it was nice for washing sandy feet after walking on the beach. The room has an air conditioner, but stays fairly cool during the day even without having it on. The shower in the bathroom is very large, and fluffy white robes as well as shampoo are provided. There was a mini-fridge in the room, but there wasn’t anything in it. We used it to keep the bottled water we bought from the store cool, because you can’t drink the tap water there.
The real draw to Casa Kua-Kan is the beach. It is called Playa Larga, and it is 10 miles long and gorgeous. There are a few other hotels and many restaurants in the village of “Playa Larga”, easily accessible by a short walk down the beach from Casa Ku-Kan, but most of the beach is lined with palm trees and uninhabited land. While you walk down the beach, you are likely to see birds hunting for fish in the shallow wave break, and the occasional fish washed up on shore. There are incredible views of the tropical mountains in the distance, and the beach is quiet and largely empty, especially on weekdays.
The food at Casa Kua-Kan is outstanding. The chef used to work in Zihuatanejo at one of the nicest restaurants in town, and now he crafts fresh, innovative dishes for the guests of the hotel. We ate most of our meals at the restaurant at Kua-Kan because of how much we loved the food. I highly recommend eating breakfast at the hotel, because they serve complimentary fresh baked bread with homemade butter and jam. They also have fresh cut tropical fruits and fantastic egg dishes, especially the poached eggs with garlic sauce, made especially unique by the fried plantains the eggs sit on top of. For lunch there are many fish dishes, including grilled fish, fish tacos, ceviche, shrimp cocktail, and octopus. At dinner, the mahi-mahi is especially good, and comes with vegetables that are cooked very well. I recommend having the coconut ice cream for dessert, it is the perfect way to end a relaxing day.
While we were at Casa Kua-Kan, we walked to the village of “Playa Larga” almost every day. It is a short ten minute walk down the beach or the road. In town there are a few restaurants and a couple of small corner markets from which you can buy bottled water, soda, alcohol, chips, and cookies. The water at these shops is much cheaper than at the hotel, and since you cannot drink the tap water at the hotel, I recommend stocking up on water at the beginning of the trip. While we were in Playa Larga, my mom and I stopped by King Fish restaurant to have lunch. Even though most of the restaurants on the beach look empty and “sketchy” from the outside, we felt fine having lunch at King Fish after getting a recommendation from the Kua-Kan concierge, Juan. The owner of the restaurant was very gracious, and helped translate the menu for us using what little English he spoke. The grilled fish was very good, I recommend ordering the special of the day, as it is almost guaranteed to be something caught that morning.
My mom and I also went into Zihuatanejo one of the days we were there. We had the Juan the concierge get us a cab, which was reasonably priced for the twenty minute drive into town. We walked around by the water, along the path that runs along the beach, and wandered through the old, Spanish style buildings that make up the most touristy part of town. I recommend walking along the fishing pier at the end of the beach in Zihuatanejo to get a good look at the beach and the mountains behind it. You will get solicited by local fishermen asking if you would like to take a boat out to go fishing. My mom and I did not go fishing, but we saw many people who looked like tourists doing so, and most of the boats looked very safe. We had a fantastic lunch at “Any’s” restaurant, a few blocks off the beach. The entrees were fine, standard Mexican fare, but the mole sauced served with chips as an appetizer before the entrees was fantastic. I highly recommend ordering this if you end up at this restaurant. La Sirena Gorda, a restaurant along the waterfront which my mom and I stopped at for a drink, also looked perfectly nice to eat at.
While we were in Zihuatanejo, I was on the hunt for good Mexican chocolate from an artisanal chocolate boutique. Unfortunately, this sort of shop does not exist in Zihuatanejo. It has mostly low quality, cheap goods in touristy shops. We also stopped by the Zihuatanejo Central Market. I don’t recommend going here at all, as it is crowded, dark, smelly, and full of raw meats sitting in the storefronts, including skinned cows and chickens (whose heads you can request to be chopped off in front of you). Avoid the Market if you are remotely squeamish, sensitive to strong smells, or claustrophobic. Luckily, we were able to get a cheap taxi back to Casa Kua-Kan within minutes of standing on the side of the street looking for one.
One of the main highlights of the trip was how useful Juan, our concierge was. He spoke a decent amount of English, and was able to help us with whatever we needed. He gave great recommendations, and hailed taxis whenever we wanted them.
The other was all the animals we saw. One morning, there was a dolphin jumping through the waves, which we sat and watched while we ate breakfast. Another evening, a turtle laid her eggs on the beach on front of our hotel. Everyday, there were horses from the nearby ranch running along the beach (it is very easy to get a horseback riding trip, catered to your ability, from the locals). One afternoon, a crocodile came out of the lagoon nearby the hotel, which my mom and I were able to see. I have never seen so many wild animals on one vacation before!
A few lowlights of the trip...
As you are in a tropical area, there are tons of mosquitoes at night, and if you don’t put on bug spray, you will get eaten alive. There also tend to be a decent amount of bugs in the pool, which is very nice, but doesn’t seem to get cleaned very often.
It can be very warm and humid, especially in the early afternoons. Be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen. This usually breaks by the early evening, especially if it is breazy. It can be very windy, so be prepared to feel a bit tired and windswept when you get back from a walk on the beach.
Overall, this is a gorgeous and peaceful resort, on a beautiful beach, with very attentive staff. Absolutely worth a trip, especially at such an affordable price.
- Verified traveler (8/5): It is a lovely place, when you get there. - It is off the beaten track but lovely when you get there. The staff were friendly and the food was great. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. We loved the pool, meals and the great view of the ocean. If you are looking for a very quiet get away with great food this is a good place.
- rodney (10/5): Relaxation - Very nice, very relaxing, we were one of two couples in the whole place. Staff was very attentive, no tv, no internet, this a place of relaxation!
Pool was wonderful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nicest staff of any hotel I've ever stayed at. - If you want to get away from it all, Casa Kau-Kan is the place! No TV, no WiFi, just a comfortable room right on the beach with the friendliest staff ever!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel did not have Internet. We were told when we booked that it did. We were expecting an important e-mail so had to take a taxi into town to Internet cafe.
- Casey de Raaf (8/5): - If you want peace and quiet this is definitely the place to go. The hotel and it,s staff were awesome. Found the price a little high but still worth every dollar.
- adventureguys (10/5): secret hideaway! - My family of 4 stayed at this lovely boutique hotel @ Playa Larga. Very near Zihua and Ixtapa, but need a car or taxi. We had a great time at swimming at the beach w/ dolphins on the shore and poolside! The grounds are so secluded and quiet 24-7, it was a blessing. Our stay was made even more serene w/ the assistance of Juan(concierge), Guadulupe(housekeeper), Alfredo, Emilo and Magdaleno. The breakfasts were delicious and we dined in the town of Playa Larga for some other meals, in addition to driving into Zihua for night time activities and fun shopping. Glad we stayed here instead of Ixtapa. I hesitate in boasting of this place since I fear it will be crowded at the next visit we make.
- Sydney425 (10/5): Paradise! - I just returned from my 3rd visit to Casa Kau Kan. The first year, my husband proposed, the next year we went back and got married, surrounded by ten of our good friends, on the beach at sunset. We just returned home from our 3rd visit (9 days) to celebrate our first anniversary. All I can say is Casa Kau Kan is paradise. The owner of the hotel is a chef and the food is amazing. The staff is friendly and attends to your every need. The location is quiet and secluded, on a beautiful beach. A short taxi ride, and you are in town or Playa La Rope for dinner. If you are looking for night life and action, Casa Kau Kan is not the place for you. If you are looking for a quiet, secluded hideaway, a place to unwind and rejuvenate, it's Casa Kau Kan.
- Ducksonthemove (10/5): Wow, what a place! - We apent a week at this secluded hideaway and can only describe it as paradise on earth. There are 11 suites in this botique hotel that is tucked a few miles from town along a pristine beach.
The owner is also a cook at a local resturant and the food available at the Casa is from the menu of the resturant. We ate gormet food and walked on the beach and enjoyed some of the best accomadations you could ask for.
There are 11 suites but I would recommend that you try to get one of the Ocean front suites (there are 4). They open up to let the view and breeze in. The other suites are nice but for the total experience I highly recommend the ones on the ocean.
Take a walk a couple of hundred yards to some beach front resturants and have some great fish tacos. Sunday is the day when many of the locals from town come out to the beach to play. Those beach side grass roofed resturants are just the place to get an authentic flavor of what beach dining in Mexico is all about.
If you are interested in night life or shopping you will need to take a taxi into town. We did it a couple of times. I would recommend you go to the local market and take a walk around the shops. Lots of shops there and you won't be accosted by people coming up to you selling things like you are down in the touristy part of town.
Casa Kau-Kan is for people that want to get away from everything and enjoy first class service in beutiful accomadations at a beach side paradise.
- KeithHScott (10/5): Exceeded expectations - Just returned from a four-night stay at Casa Kau Kan and couldn't have been more pleased. The location is wonderfully secluded and peaceful, and our concierge / host Antonio was a pleasure.
The food was fresh and tasty, and the suite was nicely decorated and well-maintained. I felt the price was more than fair considering the surroundings and level of comfort.
I would recommend renting a car for getting into town and back.
